- DeadManWalking, on 10/11/2007, -2/+315I love how nobody has yet to realise that in this day and age you can't censor anything. If you try, you'll only push it into the open and to millions of people wondering why you were trying to censor it. I hadn't heard of this doco until I saw this article, and now i'm going to make sure I don't miss it. Good job Travolta.
- anoneMoose, on 10/11/2007, -3/+243Scientology is using John Travolta's star power to prevent you from viewing a documentary critical of Scientology. This is yet another example of Scientology censoring dissent and criticism. They have a long record of this.
- cablefish, on 10/11/2007, -1/+135The first rule of Scientology is you don't talk about Scientology.
- bebop717, on 10/11/2007, -3/+127Could the scientologists simply give a a list of things they hate, that we at digg can promote.

- mcrbids, on 10/11/2007, -1/+84It's real, folks.
One of my best friends for over 10 years just recently told me he had to "disconnect" from me because I think Scientology is a bunch of crap. I tried hard - I really tried. I told him that although I don't buy Scientology and although I think it's a bunch of bunk, I supported and would fight for his right to be a Scientologist, and pointed out that I had even loaned him money so that he could buy more Scientology counseling. I pointed out that one of my best friends (a Christian) is OK with the knowledge that I don't believe in her form of god, and that's ok.
But all that wasn't enough. I had to believe that Scientology was a good thing, or lose a friend. And any friend that is willing to demand that I trade in my integrity for a friendship is about to lose a friendship - which is exactly what happened.
Sucks, though. I'm still mourning the loss of a good friend weeks later. Scientology is a serious *****.
Want to fight back?
Scientology will inundate you with magazines and promotional materials if you show ANY INTEREST AT ALL in their religion. And, they don't discern multiple names at the same address.
So, register as if you were interested in Scientology materials at several different churches, and get their junk mail. Each magazine costs them several dollars to print. You can cost Scientology $50-$100 every single month just by throwing away their expensive magazines and flyers. I cackle to myself throwing away several pounds of their shiatt every single month! - slicedoranges, on 10/11/2007, -8/+85While I agree that religion is pointless, Scientology is MOST DEFINITELY worse than others.

- ngmcs8203, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47I wonder if Battle Field earth failed so miserably because of John Travolta or because it was a story written by Scientology's founder.

I practiced Scientology for 6 years and I was in the Sea Organization; I think I'm qualified to answer this question. Scientology as a whole doesn't dislike much; but their dislikes are so sweeping and so great that it appears that they "hate" a lot. It's a long, but narrow list, so here goes:
Individuals bad mouthing Scientology, especially via a public channel (newspapers, television, web sites, etc.)
Psychiatry and Psychology as a whole
Pharmaceutical companies that product psychotropic drugs (GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly)
The American Medical Association (as they support Psychiatry and psychotropic drugs)
The Food Drug Administration (due to their raids on the Scientology orgs for using e-meters and passing out vitamins in the 60s)
Anti-cult organizations that list Scientology on their "predator lists" (See Rick Ross, for example)
Internal Revenue Service (This one is debatable, as they have since given Scientology tax-exempt status)
Government bodies, chiefly foreign governments, that look to stop the spread of Scientology
Christianity as a whole (because they are bigger and have more adherents, and they picket against Scientology at times)
News organizations (news papers, magazines, as they don't print the "positive" side of Scientology)
People who have left (It's considered a suppressive act for which you are excommunicated if you haven't left in the appropriate manner)
People who disseminate copyrighted Scientology material (specifically the OT levels)
Those are the big ones that I can think of at the moment. Pretty much as long as you don't oppose or expose them in any way, they leave alone. - MartinWelbourne, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32I know a lot of decent EX-scientologists and I'm sure there are many of them in the cult that genuinley mean well. The trouble is that the cult does bad things to them and makes them do bad things. It is a cycle of abuse that they call "KSW" - Keep Scientology Working".
Over at WWW.XENU.NET you can talk to people like the wonderful Tory "Magoo" Christman who used be an OT-7 (which is one of really top levels in the cult) and spent a fortune getting there. Her story is out there on the net (as will be all the mud slinging from the cult). She will be on the BBC Panorama documentary in fact as will a few others with some shocking stories to tell. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36john travolta got ass raped by xenu

- ghm101, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33ICSU, I would argue that there is a difference between a cult (scientology) with their pay as you go profiteering, disconnecting family members and aggressive persecution of critics and more traditional organised religions who, whatever you think of their beliefs operate much more benignly.
- Keach, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29Scientologists actually train to rile up critics into a frenzy.
They call it Bull Baiting.
John Sweeney should have been prepared for that going in. These people are very, very, very sick, twisted and dangerous.
http://www.factnet.org/Books/ScandalOfScientology/sos-17.html
[The first Scientology course consists of two days or four evenings of the following exercises or "Training Routines" or T.R.'s, as they call them there. In the first T.R., "Confrontation," two Scientologists sit a few feet apart and simply stare in each others' eyes without moving, twitching, blinking, giggling, sighing, fidgeting, for a minimum of an hour.{21} (It is this exercise that helps Scientologists learn how to stare intensely at others.)
The second T.R. is called "Bull Baiting" and it is somewhat similar; one Scientologist again stares directly at the other without moving, only this time the other partner tries to make the immobile one "flinch" or react by insulting him, humoring him, taunting him, or leading him on -- usually about his physical flaws or sexual problems.] - SLuM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28R. http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20000512/REVIEWS/5120301/1023 - zazzalicious, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26From John Sweeney, the BBC Panorama reporter: Program on BBC1 8:30 pm Monday 14th May 2007 (I'm sure it will be on BT pretty soon after)
"While making our BBC Panorama film "Scientology and Me" I have been shouted at, spied on, had my hotel invaded at midnight, denounced as a "bigot" by star Scientologists, brain-washed - that is how it felt to me - in a mock up of a Nazi-style torture chamber and chased round the streets of Los Angeles by sinister strangers.
Back in Britain strangers have called on my neighbours, my mother-in-law's house and someone spied on my wedding and fled the moment he was challenged. "
Sounds more like the (insert secret police organisation of choice here) than a religion...

- laserblazer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Mr. Travolta has become a grotesque mockery of himself. Scientology can never compensate him for the death of the little respect he once commanded. Instead, they surround him with yes-men paid for with only a tiny amount of the money he inevitably pays into their Ponzi scheme.
In short, sucks to be him. - tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24The clip above was posted by scientologist nutjobs, and they're moderating all replies to it - watch the programme tomorrow to see it in context!
- michael1406, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Pulp Fiction is one of my favourite films ever. Although it had a lot to do with Samuel, John did well.
And oh yeah. Almost forget. Scientology is for nuts, it would seem. - Dr.Gonzo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22I usually never bash people for what they believe. I have a lot of Christian friends even though I'm atheist myself. Most religions require faith and I understand that but... This is a religion started by a science fiction author that involves aliens. WTF?
- gllopc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22@conmulligan: "What's you opinion of Scientology having practised it?"
Well, I left for a reason, obviously; but that reason was more associated with my treatment by a few people in the organizations and not necessarily the tenets of Scientology.
Scientology gave me some very important social, relationship and self-handling skills. I think these things are all available from other sources and I just happened to attain mine through Scientology. It's a bit of a double-edged sword; if I had just learned those things then I could say that Scientology was a 100% great experience. Unfortunately, all of the space-ship crap (The Marcabian Confederacy, between lives area, implants stations, etc) are all there, and so are L. Ron Hubbard's writings on pushing Scientology because it's "what's best for Man".
What you read about people's experience in Scientology is pretty much true. It primarily comes down to this one fact: The true purpose of Scientology is to make money for some "people at the top"; namely David Miscavige. The want for money lies within EVERY action in Scientology.
I met some really great people, who are still in Scientology, I assume. The organization's desire for money pushed these people into doing things they would never do otherwise, such as hard-selling a product. Some of them are too weak-minded to grow a spine and leave. Others, like myself, grew that spine as a result of their time in Scientology, and leave.
Scientology IS a cult. It DOES push itself on people for the purpose of making money. It's not as harmful as people make it out to be; but I wouldn't test its patience to find out.
Overall - avoid it and buy some self-help books. You'll be MUCH better off. - stevenvh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21"Scientology is using John Travolta's star power"
While other Scientology members are ransacked, my guess is that this doesn't hold for Travolta or Cruise. Celebrities like JT and TC are indirectly a goldmine for Scientology. I'm sure they get their share of the wealth... - wakananda, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25Muslims are right down your street. So are scientologists. But muslims in America -and most places- don't abduct people, harass them, etc. They aren't as aggressive and high-profile. *Militant* "muslims" are, and those are not *all* muslims (no matter how much I say this, the frothing at the mouth mulim-haters, usually christian, can't seem to process it). I don't pass two or three *muslim* storefronts on a walk around town, with people badgering me to take a "personality test" - that will invariably show that I'm ***** up and need their "counseling." Christians, however, are similar, in that they seem to feel comfortable with shoving literature in my face, threatening me with eternal 3rd degree burns, and accuse me of "bashing" them when I politely decline to lap up their dogma like a good, fearful puppy. You don't see outraged -outraged!- scientologists demanding that a Hubbard figurine be placed on the courthouse lawn on Hubbard-day, or the Eleven Principles of Xenu (or whatever) tacked on the wall of every school. Christianity is the most oppressive, threatening, in-your-face and up-your-uterus and in-your-bedroom religion in America, bar none. Scientology is going to catch up, faster than Islam. Islamic militancy is used as an excuse to tighten our grip on the world (over 700 military bases in foreign countries. WTF?). No wonder they hate us - how would you like it if the USA were occupied by someone else, telling us how to live, what weapons we could have, taking all the good jobs and cutting deals in it's favor? So it's not as simple as "which religion is the worst - pick one." They all suck, in their own special way.
- democracysucks, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22I'm wondering if there are any decent Scientologists out there. As a fundamentalist Christian (no, not the Pat Roberston, Republican kind), I know there are a lot of outspoken, moronic, nominal Christians out there giving my beliefs a bad name. But I do quite a few other fundamentalists who *aren't* absolutely retarded and who speak out about things. However, I don't know of *any* Scientologists who disagree with the ones that make it in the news all the time.
So, the question is: Are any of you Diggers, or do you know any, decent Scientologists? - andyman1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19@morelia
That is some delicious copy-pasta. May I have more? - manixrock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Here's the description of the Battlefield Earth movie on IMDB (where it got a Average Grade of 2.3):
"BATTLEFIELD EARTH (2000) 1/2 * John Travolta, Barry Pepper, Forest Whitaker, Kim Coates, Richard Tyson, Sabine Karsenti, Michael MacRae, Michael Byrne, Sean Hewitt, Kelly Preston (unbilled cameo). My candidate for worst film for the new millennium: atrociously awful Travolta vehicle (who is totally to blame for his co-producing this pet project due to his Scientology ties) in bringing L. Ron Hubbard's cult sci-fi novel to fruition is just one God-forsaken mess from start to finish in what feels like the ultimate Ed Wood film with a dire need for the gang from MST3K to show up and provide apt ridicule: Travolta stars as 9 foot tall alien Terl, a Psychlo who commands his rampaging race in wiping out mankind in the year 3000 with only rebel Pepper out to thwart his nefarious plans of mining gold for his own just rewards.
Ridiculous from the get go: the make-up of the Psychlos: a combination of dreadlocks a la Jar Jar Binks to the 'Coneheads' to the costume rejects of any speed metal band of the 1990s; the dim lighting and production design; the cheezy special effects (except for the climax of Terl's planet - who the HELL cares if I'm giving away the ending?!! IT SUCKS!!!) - which looked kinda cool!) and laugh-out loud dialogue: ('Rat-brains' is the often reviled retort by Terl to the 'man-animals' he despises). Travolta better get his mind straight because his post-'Pulp Fiction' comeback is running on jet vapors at this point and don't even get me started on his evil Vincent Price-inspired chortle! UGGGHH!!! (Dir: Roger Christian)." - dude199, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18@morelia

- osfn8, on 10/11/2007, -5/+21Jesus and Muhammad honestly believed they were prophets and they didn't base the religion on stealing from their followers unlike L Ron Hubbard who explicitly said that creating a religion is a great way to get money. It may sometimes seem like Christianity and Islam are like that now, but that's not what their original and still most mainstream intents are.
Scientology is by far worse than Islam as a whole. - littlebylittle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15BBC TV Listing:

Panorama
Mon 14 May, 8:30 pm - 9:00 pm 30mins
John Sweeney investigates the Church of Scientology, endorsed by some major Hollywood celebrities, but which continues to face the criticism that it is less of a religion and more of a cult. Some former members claim the Church uses a mind control technique to put opponents at a psychological disadvantage. During the course of his investigation, Sweeney is shouted at, spied on, visited in his hotel at midnight and chased around the streets of LA by strangers in hire cars.
