- ats314, on 04/25/2008, -17/+8Every church in the world gets away with it. Open you eyes. Religion has been the cause of most global conflicts since its inception. It's time to simply say " I don't know."
- hipnerd, on 04/25/2008, -9/+14I call BS.
Religion didn't start the Iraq War (neocon designs to "rearchitect" the Middle East did. Read up on PNAC.)
or Vietnam
or Korea
or World War II
or World War I
or the Civil War
or the Spanish American War
or the War of 1812
or the American Revolution
Religion may be sometimes used as a convenient rationalization when men do evil things, but that does not mean that without religion men would be good. Stalin renounced religion and still managed to kill more people than Hitler.- ats314, on 04/25/2008, -7/+8I love how you site human history by the last 300 years. How bout the 100 years war? The Spanish Inquisition? Alexander the Great's conquest of the modern world? Besides, you could easily argue that the Iraq war was cause by religion, and a great many people already have. 65% of congress has admitted that they believe that the US victory in Iraq is prophesied by the Bible. And most of the conflict in the Middle East is directly attributed to religion, there is zero arguing that. More importantly, you have to dig below the surface of oil and land conflicts to understand the mentality of human beings and why it is we conflict with eachother. Many times religion is the underlying root to political differences. The world will be ready for no religion when we no longer fear not having all the answers.
- hipnerd, on 04/25/2008, -2/+6100 Years War - That was a fight between two royal families for the French throne. Religion had nothing to do with it. You're not off to a good start.
Spanish Inquisition - The Spanish Inquisition was established and directly controlled by the monarchy of Spain -- not the Catholic Church. Although it dressed itself up in religion, it's primary function was to weaken political opposition to the Monarchy. At that time religion and politics were often intertwined, but the Spanish throne would have targeted political dissenters no matter what their religion. Religion was the excuse, not the reason for the conflict.
You could argue that Iraq was started because of religion, but you'd be wrong. The architects of the Iraq War laid out their reasoning quite clearly in the late 1990s when they tried to get Clinton to invade Iraq. They thought that if Saddam fell, Iraq would instantly turn into a democratic paradise that supported the U.S. Clinton wouldn't go for it, but they kept looking for an opening ot implement their plan. 9-11 gave them the excuse.
The Middle Eastern conflicts are mainly over land, national pride and control of oil. The Arab and Persian nations didn't round up the Jews and gas them in the 1930s and 40s. That was Europe. Ethnic and cultural tensions flared up in the Middle east when the Europeans felt so bad about what they did to the Jews that they decided to give them the Arab's land based on a 2000-year-old claim.
Osama bin Laden has been around for decades. He never had any interest in the U.S. until we built permanent military bases in Saudi Arabia. He saw that as an invasion -- maybe rightfully so. That's a specific political motive for his campaign against the United States -- not a religious motive.
People on all sides use religion as a smokescreen. The real motivations are usually far simpler: money, oil, political power. - CamperBob, on 04/26/2008, -3/+2Of *course* religion enabled the Iraq war. You can thank the influence of religion in politics for George Bush's election. No other cohesive voting bloc would've been anywhere near sufficient to put him over the top.
Unless you honestly think Al Gore would have invaded Iraq in response to 9/11, it's illogical not to consider how Bush was elected, and who voted for him, as prime motivators for current US policy.
- solistus, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1Religion is a tool, not the cause of problems. Elites across time have found a variety of handy tools to mobilise populations for war, and religion has certainly been one for a long time. Nowadays, it seems that the buzzword of "democracy" is far more efficient. Under the guide of spreading (or keeping the world safe for) democracy, we had WWII (in which democracy was _actually_ under attack), then got on a bit of a rush and justified Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, the Gulf War, Kosovo and now the War on Terror with the same line.
The carrot they hold under our noses changes to suit the times. The real questions worth asking in each case are, who benefits and who is pulling the strings? Typically, the answer to both questions leads you to the same corrupt elites. In the Middle Ages, leaders would justify their attempts at expanding their own power on religious grounds, which spoke to the ideals of the masses. Nowadays, our leaders justify the same attempts by appealing to our new ideals - freedom, democracy, human rights and multiculturalism. The fact that these actions consistently undermine those principles is immaterial; they pay lip service, millions of sheep take the bait and voila! We're at war again. Every single person I know who is still in support of the Iraq War is because "we got rid of an evil dictator and brought DEMOCRACY to Iraq!" That's right, never mind the daily bombings and the lack of basic utilities; we brought in the D-word so all is well.
This got a little off topic, but the point is, it's not religion. Religion is just another entry on a long list of ideals that have been abused and twisted to serve elite interests. It's not the excuse for war that's important; that's the charade, the spectacle to keep our eyes off the real goings on. It's not the ideological justification for war we should be focusing on, but who it is that is feeding us that justification. Religion wasn't responsible for the Crusades, just like Democracy isn't responsible for Iraq. It's the people in power; wake up!

- yojiffyskippy, on 04/25/2008, -9/+2Assault? Yes. Abortion and Slavery? No.
- themonkman, on 04/25/2008, -0/+9I'm getting really tired and pissed with these "but [insert religion here] does it", because it's a ***** dismissive assertion. Every organization on the planet has varying levels of assault (mental or physical) or slavery (slave to one's work, literal slavery), but they vary in levels. Scientology's levels of these egregious crimes are so vast and astronomical that it pales in comparison with nearly any other modern day religion or organization.
I seriously wonder if those making such dismissive statements belong to the Church of $cientology. It's this dismissive tactic that entices people to overlook the crimes and misdeeds of Scientology while not having to defend their membership or be directly attacked themselves. It wouldn't be surprising coming from such a cowardly horde.

logical fallacy FTL- BlacklabelSAR, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1From Wiki
A religion is a set of beliefs and practices, often centered upon specific supernatural and moral claims about reality, the cosmos, and human nature, and often codified as prayer, ritual, and religious law. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction.

Also from Wiki
Cult typically refers to a cohesive social group devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture considers outside the mainstream, with a notably positive or negative popular perception. Many religions were considered cults before they became considered religions.

I'd say the majority of Scientologists are just wanting to help, they're essentially good people, just misguided - this is what Scientology preys on and takes them for extensive amounts of money.
If you take the same Scientologists who are wanting to help, and direct them towards more obtainable goals (like tackling world hunger, the money they spend on scientology would go a loooong way)... I'd say that the world would be a better place - regardless of if they want to believe in space alien overlords or not.
No doubt there are some bad eggs in Scientology, there are bad eggs in every religion. That being said, I cant think of any other religion that has a special investigative branch like the CIA and that plainly scares the ***** out of me.

"These projects ranged from rock hauling, taking rocks out of the creek, picking them up, hauling them up a hill, putting them in a pile -- these were usually to make rock walls,"
Oh teh noes! They made them work!!!!!!! What cruel, heartless bastards.
Scientology is evil, but it isn't because of that.- deepthot42, on 04/25/2008, -0/+9She has had a cushy experience compared to other members stories (cause, you know, her uncle.)

They need an expose about the RPF (Rehabilitation Project Force)
Missy X:
"What an experience. I slept in a paint shed or in the garage. I quickly learned about "rocks & schoals" which included push-ups, sit-ups, "laps" (including the "big lap", which meant you had to run up the stairwell to the 11th floor and back) for such offenses as not making an acceptable product, failure to call someone "Sir", talking back after receiving an order (known as "backflash"), missing a time target set. In the summer, it averaged 95 degrees outside and was extremely humid. Where we slept, ate and studied was infested with cockroaches and mice/rats. My husband (we did get married on my 17th birthday) was taken off the RPF and I was kept there for 8 months. We were not allowed to live together -- I was kept in a dorm with the rest of the RPF."- BECoole, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Well, that would suck.
- AriaStar, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5Work is one thing. Six-year-olds hauling rocks up hills is another.

Brian: Please, please, please listen! I've got one or two things to say.
The Crowd: Tell us! Tell us both of them!
Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't NEED to follow ME, You don't NEED to follow ANYBODY! You've got to think for your selves! You're ALL individuals!
The Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals!
Brian: You're all different!
The Crowd: Yes, we ARE all different!
Man in crowd: I'm not...
The Crowd: Sch! - KlogereEndGrim, on 04/25/2008, -12/+6Why hasn't anyone declared they willingness to thrust their erect member into the moist cavities of this startling example of female beauty? I,for one, _would hit it_ like the fist of an angry god!
I might have small flashes, with her turning into David Miscavige for a second or two, but it would be totally worth the creepiness, given her hittability and all... ;) - simbelmyrne, on 04/25/2008, -2/+9Wow. Not a single person on the first page of comments said "We are legion."

- bgodley, on 04/26/2008, -0/+15Citizens of Digg and the planet Teegeack at large (known to you folks as "earth")
I see a lot of hostility towards Anonymous related articles, which can be understandable if you dislike the Chan originated memes. However, you must realize this is the very very first movement that has the real chance to bring this cult down whereas our government failed us, and in failing to call out the government, our media failed us. It is up to us and only US because there will be no incentive otherwise for the media to push these stories.
I urge you diggers to set aside your differences with the channers as I have and show up to your next rally and tell the cult exactly what you think of what they've done with free speech in your country. I was once a Scientologist but quit upon finding out about the horrific abuses they were guilty of, and was in turn fair gamed. As bizarre as the memes are, Winston Churchill said if Hitler invaded hell he would ally with the devil himself, and to be honest long cat ain't half bad. This isn't about the Chans or the ebaums, or the awfuls, or the clambakes or the diggs. This is about everyone on the internet who has read about Scientology and said "why hasn't something been done about this?"
