- Harabeck, on 07/12/2009, -3/+41Am I the only one that watched the video? After saying it *might* be better if we still had to use paper and pencil, he immediately says, "and that would be a stupid thing to say". He was just emphasizing his point that the internet is a major avenue of attack on the US.
- fancypantscz, on 07/12/2009, -16/+51It has become clear to me that if the American people do not actively defend their civil liberties, they will usurped by the state. A free society is inherently full of risk. I for one consider it a risk worth taking. I would argue that our own federal government is a greater threat to the security of our information infrastructure then any other group or individual.
Mr. Rockefeller is a fearmonger. Let me guess, the solution will have something to do with limiting our freedom to use the internet. If the banking and electricity institutions are too stupid to figure out a way to protect themselves from an attack by some kid in Latvia, then perhaps they should move their business offline. I see no reason why I should surrender any of my freedoms to secure what are essentially private businesses failing to provide security for themselves.
This man is a bigger threat to the security of my freedoms than any cyberattackers. - ZenFountain, on 07/12/2009, -7/+31Did anyone actually watch the video and understand the context of his remarks? Guess not, but since he's a Rockefeller it must be a conspiracy!
- skelooth, on 07/12/2009, -2/+23Uhhh, all he said was that the internet is a huge security concern; which it is, then he asked for thoughts on how to go about securing it. I'm not sure where the original digger heard him say "the Internet should have never existed." ... now who's the fear monger?
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -13/+34Some people want to take away the last true free speech zone and turn it in to a shopping mall. ***** them. If our politicians are worried about our infrastructure being compromised through the internet, then maybe they shouldn't have bridged the two in the first place.
- EndAntiSemitism, on 07/12/2009, -6/+25Watch the video - the description does not even come close to explaining the context of this statement.
And buried for Prisonplanet - they are a garbage website with the sole intention of selling ***** to ignorant and stupid suckers who believe their garbage. (Hey, buy a tinfoil hat so the lizard people can't read your thoughts!) - Zarimus, on 07/12/2009, -11/+27If we had never invented roads and highways we'd never have to worry about speeding and carjacking too. It's almost like no technology exists that humans can't use for evil as well as good. This of course, is clearly the fault of the technology.
- Ferre1, on 07/12/2009, -15/+27I see.
So because the defence department and other government agencies are too stupid to figure out not to connect the internet cable to computers with delicate information the entire internet has to be censored.
Wow, how genius. - Inceptious, on 07/12/2009, -3/+14BURIED AS INNACURATE.
- brokencode, on 07/12/2009, -2/+10Stay in school kids. Learn to comprehend what people say before posting exaggerated crap online.
- Transporter2000, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7I saw the video and understand the context and you are correct. He was emphasizing the security hazards of the internet to national security. Apparently comprehension isn't the forte of most digg users on this topic.
- Coven, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7I don't know why they're digging you down. ARPANET anybody?
- mkw408, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6Exactly. All they have to do is remove the bridge between the two. Problem solved.
- dysfunction, on 07/12/2009, -2/+8Has anyone actually *watched* the video? Rockefeller never once says the supposed quote, and dismisses as ridiculous the idea that the internet shouldn't exist- he's simply pointing out, quite correctly, that it can pose a big threat to our security.
- Mroutrageous, on 07/12/2009, -1/+7This is a completely misleading title.
He says, "would it have been better if we never invented the internet?" but then he immediately follows up by saying, "AND THAT'S A STUPID THING TO SAY." ----> He even admits its dumb.
He is simply talking about cyber security and the nation's need for it. It was just a quote that was taken compleatly out of context. Watch the full video and use your brain. - ironhide, on 07/12/2009, -3/+9Good instincts.
- oseymour, on 07/12/2009, -2/+7I listed to it twice, the guy did not say what the title says......buried for inaccurate title.
- ironhide, on 07/12/2009, -6/+11Kiddo, the defense department is largely responsible for the existence of the Internet in the first place.
- u8eR, on 07/12/2009, -1/+6That's a little bit of a straw man. I don't really think that's what Rockefeller stated.
- scoot2006, on 07/12/2009, -1/+5Some people need to listen to this guy talk. It's a case of RTFA.
"... and it makes you ask the question, would it have been better if we had never invented the internet? Now, that's a stupid thing to say but..."
He was just making a point about the security loopholes and some sensationalist ***** decided to put up a ridiculous headline. - gn0stik, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4The really important stuff isn't bridged. At least in some sectors.. Why our infrastructure stuff, power, utilities, banking, etc would be, I can't imagine. That stuff should run on disconnected networks ALONG SIDE publicly accessible ones. There are all kinds of ways to isolate critical data. We already do it in the medical instustry, and other industries that are required to hide personal data... some of those concepts need to be expanded into other areas.
- LenBaird, on 07/12/2009, -2/+6Under the "two Diggs for one comment once a week" rule that I wish there was, I'd use my double Digg for this comment.
- andypop481, on 07/12/2009, -1/+5wat
- brennanjohnson, on 07/12/2009, -1/+5The Digg article title is misleading as he's simply pointing out some of the issues associated with internet security. I guess those outside of this community (i.e. most political figures and business folk) don't get much exposure to this concept of security on a whole new level, but it's not a new revelation in the slightest. So I'm not sure why this was dugg in the first place as it's simply dribble from a group outside the realm of security talking about topics they don't know all that much about.
*Waiting for someone to say the same about me...
:) - Dustin00, on 07/12/2009, -2/+6Jay Rockefeller is just a self-serving douche -- I don't know about any conspiracy, he's just a prick.
- roddack, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4I bet EnTaroTassadar is part of the NWO
/s - Nintendesert, on 07/12/2009, -1/+5I love headlines and links like this. It completely exposes the group think diggtards that don't even bothering following the link. He said nothing of the sort.
- portnoy, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4Is the fact that our vital services are vulnerable to "cyber attack" due to the existence of the Internet or due to the fact that to save a few bucks our vital services are connected to that Internet instead of a separate network that isn't open to attack from any computer in the world?
- ironhide, on 07/12/2009, -2/+5I expected as much Coven. These Prisonplanet kids are too young to have any kind of perspective.
- ironhide, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3That sentence made my head hurt.
- Junkyarddawg, on 07/12/2009, -2/+5Buried for prisonplanet, buried for inaccurate, buried for dumb.
- bobdance, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3Yeah, thanks for picking on Latvia. Ass.
- EnTaroTassadar, on 07/12/2009, -8/+11As much as I agree that the government has been ***** over this fine country since before any of us were even born, I have a hard time taking anything from Prison Planet seriously.
- mogdor, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4The video stopped before Locke reminded him that there's porn on the internet, to which Rockefeller responded "oh yeah that's right....ok, nevermind".
- DoTheFandango, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3Except for the fact that he says afterwords: "and that's a very stupid thing to say."
- BobSagetFan, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4NO IT'S A CONSPIRACY SO THE LIZARD PEOPLE CAN TAKE OVER THE WORLD! /s
But seriously, these PrisonPlanet fools take statements like these and spin them in the most ridiculous ways. - ironhide, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3I think you are.
- ironhide, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3It's not a misdirection and it is very pertinent to point out that he didn't say what you're accusing him of saying. Do you work for Alex Jones?
- jmontes, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2If we're going to talk about something that should have never been invented, then let's talk about nuclear bombs.
- jbella, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2If you acutally listen to what he says, right after he says "maybe the internet should never have been invented.." he finished the statement with "... and thats a stupid thing to say."
Buried for inaccurate title. - PityDaFool, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3That's not what he said at all. Buried.
- jimbo92107, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3So detach vital systems from the internet and build a separate network for them. What's the big woof? Rockefeller's whole deal is establishing government control over political free speech.
- m0laria, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2OMFG WHAT IF THE LIZARD PEOPLES USES T EH INTERNETS AND DECIED TO COME OUT O FTHE SewWERS!!!!K@J#K!J!@#!!231212 AHAHHHHHHHHHHHdafjds.f,,.........
Hsssss...Nothing to sssssseee here.. - 68024, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2I'm not for the republicans, but the guy's a democrat.
- bob1029, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2I wonder what constitutes an "attack" against a government computer network...
ping www.whitehouse.gov /t
Hold on, theres someone at th....++++*carrier lost* - drocha184, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3He says "it really almost makes you ask the question if it would be better had we never invented the internet... and that's a stupid thing to say". He certainly is NOT saying we shouldn't have the internet.
- junaidfarooqui, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1I agree with Zarimus.... no technology exists that humans can't use for evil as well as good but rather then blaiming technology we should be knowing how to defend ourselves from the insecurities which are bought up by our own created inventions.
- magamiako, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Unfortunately building out this network would just cause an increase in taxes. And we know how these anti-government libertarians and Republicans are when it comes to TAXES!
- Mship, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1That doesnt mean that delicate information should be attached to a network that goes to the internet.
- portnoy, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1The wealthy have nothing against taxes, as long as poor people and the shrinking middle class are the ones that pay them.
