Jaw-Dropping National Geo Feature: China's Instant Cities
ngm.nationalgeographic.com — National Geographic's award-nominated feature on China's "instant cities" is online. It's a fascinating feature about the massive coastal manufacturing towns that now house 140 million people who've moved from the countryside as part of the largest migration in human history.

- jpl7986, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1yep, with newer technology and 10 times the people
- chenyu768, on 04/04/2008, -2/+7Dislocation, pollution, and poverty that's what you see when you read this? That's yet! years of brainwashing and useless terms such as capitalism, communism, freedom democracy totalitarian has ruined us all. No longer can we see the wonders of what others have done without automatically associating one of those words to it. Watch out America a cold war is coming, not because of any foreign threat, but fear. Fear of a threat that never really was, to protect a identity that we never had.
- monkeyrun, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2Can't be much worse than how the Native Americans were murdered and dislocated when the Europeans came?
- nullcodes, on 04/04/2008, -1/+6Are people being forcefully dislocated? I didnt read that anywhere in the article.
Are these slave labor camps?
How is there an increase in poverty? People would from the farm because it's poverty in the farm .. no acces to healthcare. It's not like Chinese farms get a huge subsidy.
As for pollution, that can be eliminated with waste processing once the economy improves -- richer countries in Europe do it. - 15charmaxwtf, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2Fantastic, I now know there are at least 4 morons in the world. (I dugg it down to 2 earlier and now its back to 3 !)

- Jasper710, on 04/04/2008, -9/+19China is contributing to our planet's environmental crisis at an alarming rate.
- optikknight, on 04/04/2008, -2/+1But all for the sake of economic growth, right?
- AutumnWindz, on 04/04/2008, -2/+3A rate that was far less than the USA's all the way up until the last few years.
- chenyu768, on 04/04/2008, -3/+7Your right! America and Europe did it and we can't let the rest of the world do it. If they do then what'll happen to all those Christian Children's Fund Commericals?
Oh perhaps America's criticism of China might be taken seriously if America was oh lets say part of Kyoto, and not back pedaling every EPA regulation just for corporate gain- protodon, on 04/04/2008, -1/+1The difference between China and the USA/Europe is the idea of conservation is unheard of over there and so is the idea of moderation. It's a really bad combination.
- 380ppm, on 04/04/2008, -6/+1haha....environmental crisis....quit drinking the kool-aid!
- jpl7986, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2yeah, america is there too contributing to the problem with all the outsourcing...same things happening in india also.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 04/04/2008, -2/+2WTF do you propose? That they stay in squalor? If you were consistent and honest you would be proposing the massive reduction in the standard living for everyone, in all other countries.
I can't wait until this climate alarmism/envirofreak fad is over. Though, one thing that you could do though, setting a nice example, is to kill yourself. At least then you couldn't pollute. (Remember to not get cremated though!) You get an extra bonus of not being hypocritical if you kill yourself too! - anillop, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2But its ok they are a developing nation so they should not have to comply with any sort of environmental regulation any time soon.

- DaDrake, on 04/04/2008, -1/+20When you have a robust dedicated and increasingly sophisticated population, you can accomplish anything. Like it or not, China and India are bound to become superpowers.
- BikeMessenger, on 04/04/2008, -2/+1I agree, though China will mature differently than India, depending on how you look at it: China has thrown out the best qualities of their culture and replaced them with the worst ones of ours, and is benefiting economically because of it. They are awash in cheap umbrellas and ping-pong paddles and little chirping plastic birds, and from a commodity standpoint they are doing very well. They are set to continue down this path, and we can count on more and more of our products being produced there. On the other hand India seeks protectionist policies that serve to maintain its culture and traditional way of life. These do their intended jobs well, however they will continue to hamper economic growth in the future. Though some great minds will continue to come from india, we are less likely to see "made in India" stickers all over our stuff anytime soon.
Also I agree with the comment under me about the article, zzzzzzzz!- chenyu768, on 04/04/2008, -1/+3But you forget one thing, India has a caste system and a smaller land mass and a population rapidly approaching China's without any type of control. - LonesomeFighter, on 04/04/2008, -5/+8China does one thing right, they ignore hippies.
Now before you all get mad, I live in Vermont and there is a highway that would cut driving time from 20 min to like 5 min for two connecting areas that have lots of stores. The research also says it would be better for the environment. But this highway has been in the waiting stages for like 25 years and when they started the hippies reacted and bankrupted the project with bogus claims like Indian cemeteries.- jpl7986, on 04/04/2008, -0/+7that would have cut a lot of emissions...round trip that's 30 minutes of driving per vehicle saved...hippies tend to lack common sense
- mister23, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2ah yes the circ. I also like how people bitch about sprawl, but then bitch about development in Burlington proper. you can't have it both ways.
- MASTERPL, on 04/04/2008, -1/+14China is a superpower. I bet 90% of everything you see around you was made there, and they have an army that puts most to shame.
- LonesomeFighter, on 04/04/2008, -2/+4they have an army with lots of people, but the skill level behind the army is not super impressive. of course with the shear size, they can afford to lose some here and there
- chenyu768, on 04/04/2008, -5/+4Impressive as in conquering others without cause perhaps, but since China's army is used to protect it's sovereignty then I'd say it's pretty good..
Oh lets not forget the only two losses for America has been Vietnam and Korea, and who's unimpressive army was behind that? And this was before the 10% annual rise. No wonder America is worried, not that China will attack, but that America will lose all influence in the Asian Pacific region, for naturally and instinctively the neighboring countries will back China. This is something most Americans don't comprehend, which is that most of the countries around China was created by China and have had relations with them for thousands of years.
The past two hundred years is called a dynastic downcylcle look it up, China is on the rise for about 500 years and change dynasties, a down turn of about 200 years and back up for another 500 years, over and over and over again. And while China is in power there is peace, when China isn't there is war.

We are all responsible for these things; it's not like the Chinese government decided to be evil one day and mass-produce pollution.
- chenyu768, on 04/04/2008, -2/+8They don't, cuz hating China is the new macarena, everyone is doing it but they just don't know why.
- chenyu768, on 04/04/2008, -3/+2just like me being dugg down!
- JointVenture, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2Where do you live?
People arent hating on china for no reason, a lot of my Chinese friends in Bangkok told me some great stories about the "greatness" of china /sarc
And these were "elites", in fact one girls father was a judge in China.
Do you live there?
Trust me, your uber nationalism, and the uber nationalism of the Chinese will backfire.- AutumnWindz, on 04/04/2008, -1/+1Do your Chinese friends in Bangkok live in China?
I've spent the last six years in China. It's also good to note that the 'elites' of any system are always far removed from the actuality of truth within the system. In the case of China and the Chinese, this couldn't be more true: the wealth disparity is huge and these 'elites' live better than upper-middle class Americans, while the poor peasants and migrant workers live in conditions mostly unchanged from those of a hundred years ago.
It's not 'uber nationalism' in this case, it's the truth. Can you offer any sort of argument to disprove my assertion that any person or nation that uses and imports things from China isn't an integral part of the problem?
- AutumnWindz, on 04/04/2008, -1/+1Do your Chinese friends in Bangkok live in China?
- elfster, on 04/04/2008, -3/+1autumnwindz stated " it's not like the Chinese government decided to be evil one day and mass-produce pollution".
Along with the polllution China also produces sub-standard goods. Unfortunetly most people have been in such a big snooze when it comes to Chineese imports, they don't bother to even take notice until a massive recall happens as with the tainted dog food, childrens toys contmainated with lead & the components of date-rape drugs, and high amounts of lead found in ceramic dishware.
Until China gets some rock solid quality assurance in place, their goods will always be questionable.- chenyu768, on 04/13/2008, -1/+1actually we don't pay attention to our own products. we have more recalls in a month of American products than all the recalls of Chinese products. We have recalls on vegetables that kill more people than all of the Chinese recalls (0). Remember vioxx? how many was that 1000? 2000? yet the company is still making drugs. Spiniach recall last year? green onions? Hamburger last month? did we all forget? China has had how many recalls? 4 or 5? in the past 30 something years? By this rock solid quality you mean American's?
- chenyu768, on 04/04/2008, -2/+8They don't, cuz hating China is the new macarena, everyone is doing it but they just don't know why.

About 10 years ago in Turkey, half a city's buildings collapsed during a freak earthquake due to horrible design plans, and skimping on building materials, and no structural engineering oversight. The same will happen with these "instant cities"- elfster, on 04/04/2008, -0/+0Sad, but true reality that these buildings have serious design flaws and kill many when they crumble and fail

- insomniacal, on 04/04/2008, -0/+4Incredible read. Two gems for those who don't rta:
"The China Yiwu International Trade City, a local mall, has more than 30,000 stalls—if you spend one minute at each shop, eight hours a day, you'll leave two months later."
"On the day they tested the Machine, the temperature refused to budge, and the men took turns standing on the stepladder and dumping buckets of boiling water over the gas canisters. Half an hour later, steam filled the room, and they had discovered a new axiom: Pouring boiling water on natural gas canisters has no effect on the production of bra rings."- insomniacal, on 04/04/2008, -1/+4Another gem regarding job postings:
""Cashiers, women, 1.66 meters [5.4 feet] or taller"
"Willing to eat bitterness and work hard, 25 to 45 yuan a day, male, middle school"
"Male workers 35 yuan, female workers 25 yuan"
"Average workers, people from Jiangxi and Sichuan need not apply."
There were no euphemisms, no apologies. If a company preferred its women to be tall, they asked for tall women. If they had a prejudice against a certain region, tough luck. At a factory called Jinchao, the guard turned away all applicants from Guizhou, the poorest province in China. When I asked the manager why, he said, "Around here, a lot of the petty criminals are from Guizhou.""- JointVenture, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2Thats common in Asia, its all about what you look like.

"After two months, his wife took the baby back to her home province of Guizhou. At the Guiyang rail station, two women approached and offered her a ride. They led her to a minivan that contained two men. After they left the city, she noticed a strong chemical smell and felt disoriented. The next thing she knew, they had robbed her of $120 in cash, her cell phone, and her earrings. Afterward, the baby was unusually sleepy, and the mother called Mechanic Luo in a panic. He told her to wash the child immediately."
- insomniacal, on 04/04/2008, -1/+4Another gem regarding job postings:
- nullcodes, on 04/04/2008, -4/+9These cities are not slave labor camps. People go there voluntarily instead of starving on farms. Chinese farming is not heavily subsidized to the tune of 300 billion like in certain unnamed Western countries.
Talk to anyone who has grown up in abject poverty in a third world country. It really sucks. Life expectancy at birth for people living without access to healthcare is like that of medieval Europe .. many people hungry .. Living in a city provides access to healthcare, communication, and generally better quality of life.
Sure some people like farming, but many would choose working in a factory over farming.
Without economic opportunity China will be like how some countries in Africa are today. People think living without medicines and all that is fun. It's really not, go visit some of the areas that havent economic opportunity and see what it's like. There is no other way out for these people, and I don't see you sending enough money to them as charity.
Is there pollution? Yes, but once the economy improves they will be able to clean up. Bitch at the rich countries that pollute. Developing countries need the chance to improve their economies.- JointVenture, on 04/04/2008, -2/+2Did you just say developing? they arent developing *****, they are stealing most of their tech.
Oh yeah, GE is building all their infrastructure. - nullcodes, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1Developing, not as in inventing .. developing as in building themselves up. Developing infrastructure, economy.

- nullcodes, on 04/04/2008, -2/+6Why are so many people against the Chinese having decent infrastructure and economy? They'd rather that the Chinese population starve trying to eke out a meager existence with farming? People should have a choice as to where they want to work, instead of being forced to live on a subsitence farm. Chinese people want cars, computers, cell phones, and access to healthcare too. If you're not prepared to give those up how can you ask the Chinese people?
- JointVenture, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2Were not, we wish they did have it.

- elfster, on 04/04/2008, -1/+1"Didn't the US sprout up "instant" towns like Oak Ridge, TN for workers involved in developing the atomic bomb?"
How can you compare the building of Oakridge that took 2 years to build and housed 75,000 to Chinas mega cities popping up in 2 years and housing millions? As the article states this is the largest undertaking of it's kind in recorded history taking place in China. And, there is simply no comparsion to any type of growth that ever took place in the USA, or even the world for that matter.

And, the products they mimick are substandard crap in comparison to the western made originals.

This is starting to reverse as it dawned on them that it is traditionally the daughter who takes care of them.- nullcodes, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1In some villages, the male to female ratio may be as low or lower than that. However, the overall male to female ratio is not as skewed as that.

- Ortheos, on 04/04/2008, -0/+3Japanese manufacturing used to be the same, cheap imitation crap. Now look at japan. It's auto industry is crushing usa's crappy cars. It's robotics division is the world leader, it has 50% of the world's robots involved in manufacture of industrial and consumer goods. China will be the same, china is Japan, except on a scale 10x as large. Thus it will take longer, but the end result will dwarf the industrial capacities and military might of entire continents.
Same with india. Stick to your arrogance/ignorance, and before you know it you'll be speaking chinese, fool. - nullcodes, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2Which of YOUR inventions were stolen? Many chinese are willing to work hard to enjoy a decent quality of life. Chinese have had inventions they contributed to human knowledge in the past (modern paper, immunization (look it up in wikipedia), medicines such as ephedra etc. a derivative of which is used in cold medication (pseudo ephedrine), gunpowder, rocketry, etc). And besides even if they didn't, why shouldn't they learn existing technology? Did you personally invent everything you use today? China needs a decent economy before it can spend more resources on innovation, and it alsso has to wait for its population has the social safety net which can let them take risks. Just because someone else is ahead in the race doesn't mean others should be barred from taking part in the race and crossing the finish line.

- Ortheos, on 04/05/2008, -0/+2Riiight. Continue with this 'south east asians are incapable of creativity' ***** and you will find yourself outproduced, out thought, and crushed beneath their steel boots. Your mindset is the first step towards stagnation of western society relative to the coming asian giants.

- Duffle, on 04/04/2008, -0/+4I was in China last week and I can say this is quite accurate. In Beijing, nothing stops. People are always working, always doing something. There is no such thing as safety, and I doubt they care anyways.

- SemiSarcastic, on 04/04/2008, -2/+4If that's what China wants then they'll get it, they'll work for it. While the US and Europe fight against terrorism in the Middle East and struggling to maintain our fragile economies China is just sitting and waiting. China's government is not stupid, how do think they got to where they are now? Long term planning, and promoting cohesive economic and political behavior among its people. If America and Europe want to become great again they need work harder for their bread...and maybe we also need to have a concept of loss and poverty to get motivated.

- youthagainstfas, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1Great article about China's rapid industrial development and exponential rise of factories, it's almost like gold rush style.
The majority of the rural population is very poor so everyone is desperate to make money, there's no business model or plans for these factories, companies typically withhold salaries from workers if they're not profiting. If you mention "going green" or "carbon footprint" they will have no clue what you're talking about. It's very common for under-aged workers to forge their IDs so they can legally work in factories and earn a few dollars a day. It's a long read but well worth it.
Excerpt:
In China, minimum wage varies by region, and Lishui's is about 40 cents an hour. Yashun offered jobs at the lowest rate, but applicants poured in; there was no shortage of unskilled labor. Boss Gao's father kept a pile of bra rings on his desk, to show what the factory produced. On the second day, after the workers' list was full, he told an applicant that her name would be on the backup sheet.
"Just switch my name with somebody else's," she said.
"I can't do that. We already have enough. We have 19."
The woman had short-cropped hair and lively eyes; her identity card said she was 17. She leaned close to the desk and fiddled nervously with the bra rings, as if they were pieces in a game she was determined to win.
"Just change a name," she said. "Why does it matter?"
"I can't do that."
"I would have come yesterday if I'd known."
"I'll make sure you're first on the second list. See, I even wrote 'good girl' next to your name."
But the woman wouldn't give up. At last, after ten minutes of pleading, he added her name—but then the Wenzhou superstition struck. "Now it's ershi," he said. "Twenty. That's a bad-sounding number—too much like esi, starving to death. So I'll have to add another."
The woman thanked him and headed toward the door.
"But if the boss says 21 is too many, then it'll have to be 19," he warned her.
The woman walked back to the desk. "Move my name up the list."
Five minutes later, her name was squarely in the middle of the sheet. When she finally left, the man shook his head admiringly. He said, "That girl knows how to get things done."
Later they realized that she had used her older sister's identity card. The girl who got things done, it turned out, was barely 15 years old.- JointVenture, on 04/05/2008, -1/+1You forgot the fascination with having to have a new home because homes someone else has lived in have "ghosts".
I cant wait for the olympics, it will be a real eye opener for those who visit.
No way the PRC will be able to control it, even if they do "clean up the streets" (kill dogs and cats, remove street vendors, homeless etc)
