- 10001110101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15"Japanese press said the boy lived with his young brother, separately from their parents. Their mother was believed to have been visiting them on Monday."
Actually, the little bro lived with his brother, who apparently lived on his own. - MysticSavage, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Dude, have you looked at what site you're on?
- kaiser44, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18WHERE ARE YOU FROM, THE MIDDLE EAST?

- meltingrobot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Find out on your own if it's that important to you. My guess is, he did it because... he's ***** in the head. But I guess I'm just too simple to look for something else to blame his actions on.

- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11No, instead we have a crazy farmer who feeds dead bodies to pigs (allegedly, of course).

- Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I think he meant, what are his motives?
- Kotoyumu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Hmmm, well if the boy dies from suicide in jail, writing that "shinigamis love apples." then I would figure his little bro used a Death Note.
- Rikkochet, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Oh, Austin!
- Sheff, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7My .02: I think as a whole we are becoming desensitized. Also it seems like Americans are more concerned with Americans, i.e. a headline like 'all 258 passengers were killed including 2 Americans.' Americans seem to value American life more or at least that's how I perceive the media to be reporting it.
Here is one local example - http://www.lvrj.com/news/7458252.html
A drunken 19 white kid kills five Mexican immigarnts, ages 32, 13, 9, 2 and a 7 month old. His friends are spray painting "Free Ronnie" on the crosses and leaving burned diapers at the accident site.
I also think that culturally we are more visual. We watch more TV than read books. So if there isn't a 'real' picture to go along with the story, it won't affect us as much.
In any case, I think things like this become progressively more extreme to get a rise out of most people. Granted, both stories are sick, but I can't seem to laugh about dead children. - OwdenBowden, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well I have to tell you. Its that dam Rock-N-Roll that is doing it to them
- MrQuoz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If that's true then I'm never watching television ever again.
- loquax, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8This is a perfect example of how a crazy person (like the dude at Virginia Tech) will find a way to use anything to kill another human being. Opponents in America (and Europe) to 2nd Amendment would have to ask themselves if outlawing knives would put an end to this type of killing. The answer clearly is no, as this boy is sick and would have found some other way to kill his mother. Sure, a gun makes killing more efficient, but Japan (and the rest of the world) has seen its share of weird knife related murders that involved multiple homicides. The whole "guns don't kill people" cliche is trite, but it does bear up some truth--people have (and probably will) continue to kill each other with whatever is available. The problem isn't the tool that is being used, the problem is that we really need to face the truth that a certain segment of the population (of any population) has a greater likelihood of killing another human being. The real question is how do we identify and minimize the harm that these people do before they do any harm.

"before posting meaningless comment"
.. - Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The Japanese government issued an official statement that there is no historical documentation of a beheading and they will not apologize; however, they will donate 100 yen in sympathy money to an orphanage for children whose parents were beheaded.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4WHAT THE *****!
- transcendz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Maybe you should get your facts right, then : there are far less murders in Japan than in the US. BTW, you also have knives AND guns. The greater the temptation is...
- revenge7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Reunion!
- Insolent, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The Japanese are so polite. They turn themselves in with the evidence.
- ButterBridge, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5There was someone who was asking about the 'why' of this issue. I recently watched a movie called "Nobody Knows", it's a story about a group of siblings who have to band together and live by themselves when their mother leaves them. Throughout the movie, a lot of emphasis was placed on the shame that the oldest son felt for not having a father or mother figure around. The mother was well-meaning, but she left the kids for months at a time to be with another man (I think).
I'm guessing that since he was the oldest son, he felt a lot of shame about his familial situation, and it was probably even more compounded because he lived in a completely separate household than his parents.
For those who are not in that type of culture, it's probably almost impossible to understand the shame and guilt that a lot of people in that situation go through. Family is paramount.
I don't know about the divorce/separation statistics for Japan, but I'd wager to bet they are quite a bit lower than most other countries. The Japanese culture does not like to talk out their problems or emote. I'm guess that when you keep your emotions about something bottled up for too long, you just explode.
The Japanese just tend to explode in a very extreme manner with extreme actions. They also don't try to hide or get away with it. He probably planned it out and executed it knowing full-well what he was doing, and full-well what the consequences would be; he just didn't care about the consequences. - ronaldinho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@ButterBridge
Like I said, it's almost a biggie everytime a crime is reported in Japan. And the Japanese are not the most expressive ethnicity, so often they just hide and let things fester until they explode. You are absolutely correct
@PJBenny
As for why we seem to be trivial about this and not on the VTech shootings, well, not 1, but 33 people lost their lives. The larger the number, likely the more solemn we will be about this. I mean, if it's just one person, it's hard to get real sympathy out of most of us. That's the sad truth. I mean, murders are simply too common today for us to be outraged. - shallwedave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3For a second, I thought I stumbled into the Future Sitcom Writers of America convention.
- HRF1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't think I would consider a 17 year old a "boy", would you?
- donotdigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2He was supposed to go after Sylar...
/DRTFA - BrutusCato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think this event as well as the recent assassination of the Hiroshima mayor by some gangster over damage to his car show that the only thing preventing pure chaos in Japan is not its gun control laws but its complete disrespect of defendant's rights.
- bluenash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2give that boy a stake. one to be burned at, that is.
- icon1985, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3how could so many people start blaming this tragic incident to video games and movies when there hasn't been a single piece of evident to prove it? Some even went as far as commenting that being Asian was the cause of the boy's act. Instead of simply firing your "racial profiling", why don't you dig a little deeper at the life they live, the pressure they go through everyday and then perhaps you may understand how things like this could happen.
- BrutusCato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Or you know the was off his ***** rocker and just in amoment of lucidity he did a horrible act.
- stonebear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Freaking Japs hold back a lot of *****. Even when their world collapses around them, they are so clean and polite; except for the psycho-murders and body parts that keep popping up (to everyone's horror, and no-one's surprise).
