Italy Starts a Controversial Plan to Fingerprint Gypsies
iht.com — Italian authorities have started fingerprinting tens of thousands of Gypsies living in nomad camps across the country — adults and children alike — brushing aside accusations of racism by human rights advocates and international organizations.

- FuryOfThor, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6I can see why he's doing it though--if there were 700 camps of technically homeless people who had a much higher rate of crime than normal folks living somewhere in the US, the government would be stupid not to do something.
This probably is not the best course of action, though.- sanman, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1So it's okay for this type of treatment to occur in Europe (no historical precedent there! nahhh!) but if there's a group with a much higher rate of crime in the USA, then they can run for president?
Nah, I think the prevailing "reasoning" on Digg amounts to a double standard.
It's not okay to treat them like they're criminals. You might as well be establishing a Department of Pre-Crime (ie. "they're going to commit crime anyway, so we're just getting fingerprinting out of the way in advance!")

- prompel, on 07/03/2008, -5/+2Where I come from, "Gypsy" equals "Thief". And yes, I have personal experience to support that view.
If you wish to be treated as equals, then please behave as if you're part of the human race.- thebellmaster1x, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6Because a few have made themselves notable as thieves. That does not make all Roma thieves. Many live in isolated villages and bother no one.
- sanman, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1And you Europeans are such wonderfully inclusive societies (pfft!) with such a grandly humane history (pfeh!), which is why you spend so much time lecturing others on human rights (particularly countries whose resources you happen to covet)
- whysteriastar, on 07/03/2008, -4/+3This is how these people have been living for centuries. It's no less racist than asking all Native Americans to get fingerprinted because there's a high crime rate on their reservations.
- thebellmaster1x, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7No, it's no less racist.
...Except that both are racist, are they not? A certain proportion of a people who commit crimes should not condemn the rest of their people to such an invasion of privacy.
- thebellmaster1x, on 07/03/2008, -1/+7No, it's no less racist.
- feacesface, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2I learned the hard way what happens when you find a random gypsy to babysit for a few weeks...short version: not good.
