- pennyfan87, on 01/04/2009, -62/+144The Gaza War, explained:
1. Israel's airstrikes have been precisely aimed at Hamas fighters. Reportedly 80 percent of those killed are Hamas members, not civilians. Israel is trying to kill fighters; Hamas is trying to kill civilians. There's a vast difference.
2. Cycle of violence? No. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 to give the Palestinians a chance to set up their own government. They chose Hamas to rule them. Then the rocket attacks from Gaza started. Israel is defending itself from rockets that could target 700,000 of its people.
3. Israel wants to reach a two-state solution so Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace side by side. Hamas wants to destroy Israel and any Palestinians who want to make peace with Israel.
4. Peace between Israel and the Palestinians is impossible as long as Hamas is a player. this is why Arab states are not taking Hamas's side. - martalli, on 01/04/2009, -18/+92Great, a report from Jerusalem...I would rather see some reporters from the actual battle report on the battle. Articles like these ought to be prefaced "I was told..." and "I saw on TV..." Since these days we can watch and read the local media on the internet, I don't really care much for reports from hundreds of miles away.
- Gutterpunk, on 01/04/2009, -21/+66Who said anything about Jews?
Ohhh you are from the school of people that think that being against Isreal is being anti-semitic?
***** you then. - Samuraikhx, on 01/04/2009, -102/+143Article 51 of the United Nations Charter
A NATION CAN DEFEND ITSELF FROM 8 YEARS OF ***** ROCKET FIRE ON WOMEN AND CHILDREN
Israel's goal is to take out armed men
Hamas's goal is to take out defenseless people
Digg is just anti-semitic - inactive, on 01/04/2009, -20/+58So let me clarify: Palestinians couldn't get food and medical supplies because of the blockade but were able to smuggle in rockets?

All of these targets instantly lose their civilian immunity and become legal and legitimate military targets under international law. The civilians deaths resulting from them now become collateral damage and the blood of those who die as a result of a strike one of those targets ultimately falls on the hands of the people who endangered their lives by turning them into military targets, Hamas.
You can show graphic pictures of dead bodies and hurt civilians in order to try to control peoples emotions and sway them to your side, but you wont be giving them an facts, only propaganda. - poidh, on 01/04/2009, -11/+40Yeah, because the reporters on the spot have done such a good job historically.
Such as when they reported that Israel had been witholding food/medicine/fuel, when it was discovered that it had been Hamas who had been diverting it specifically so that the inept Western press would report in their favour.
Or when Hamas said "report the news we give you and no other or we'll kick you out of Gaza", and surprise surprise no news organisations were kicked from Gaza.
Or when the press said that an Israeli shell killed a Palestinian family on the beach when what actually happened was that a Hamas mine had blown them up.
Or when the Western press reported on the funerals of civilians, only for one of the corpses to fall to the floor and run off.
Or when the Western press reported that a Palestinian boy had been shot by Israeli forces when in actual fact they had footage (which they refused to release) which showed that he had been shot by Palestian terrorists.
And many, many more.
Most "journalists" are interested in nothing more than personal advancement and fitting in, which excludes them from reporting what really happens. - JasonCox, on 01/05/2009, -9/+35I love politics. If they're attacking an ally then they're terrorists. If they're attacking an enemy than they're freedom fighters.
- unct, on 01/04/2009, -47/+72The Palestinians are getting everything they asked for. How dumb do you have to be to vote for a terrorist organization to run your government? A Hamas controlled government, gee, did you really think there wasn't going to be any violence? I do not condone all the civilian casualties, but if you're lobbing mortars into my country, I've got a right to defend it. BTW, where's the complaints about Hamas using women and children as human shields? Maybe they deserve some of the blame for the civilian losses.
- oztinsoldier, on 01/04/2009, -36/+61Hamas does not recognize Israel right to exist. Has been firing hundreds after hundreds rockets into Israel during ceasefire, totaling thousands of rockets. And will never stop. No country would tolerate that.
- Gutterpunk, on 01/04/2009, -5/+30Why wouldn't they want us to see a video from September 2005 that the site idiotically labeled as being from a couple of days ago?
- jetboyterp, on 01/04/2009, -84/+108Godspeed, Israel. Time to wipe Hamas terrorists off the face of the Earth.
- Pr0phecy88, on 01/04/2009, -13/+36Everyone is saying how Hamas is killing this and Hamas rocketing that, but no one is willing to post actual numbers of dead civilians caused by both sides of the conflict.
I for one would like to see numbers as they are the only thing that doesn't lie. - elister, on 01/04/2009, -60/+83With the boxing in of innocent civilians in a war zone, with no option to escape, flee or otherwise avoid serious harm to home, property and person, this plan to force the Palestinians into loving the Jews and creating a long lasting peace will surely work! I mean the only way it can work is if Palestinians completely forget the fact that they just got ass raped by F-16 launched rockets for 6 days! The cudegra after a year of economic blockades, depending entirely on support from the international community.
Worked great for Iraq when America invaded and all it took was for the US to kill more civilians in 5 years than Saddam did his entire reign! - Kidddrunkadelic, on 01/04/2009, -7/+29Cause someone is not pro-Israeli, they're automatically anti-semitic?
- Jackson0909, on 01/04/2009, -26/+47Israel needs to go ahead and finish the job. These people will obviously never learn their lesson. It's the same old song and dance over and over again:
Cause: Hamas shoots rockets into Israel
Effect: Israel pounds their ass into submission - digitalsin, on 01/05/2009, -20/+39How come no one blames Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iran, Jordan, etc for not taking in the Palestinian refugees? Everyone bitches about Israel's collateral damages and how the Palestinians have no where to go, but no one says "How come [insert muslim middle eastern neighbor] doesn't take in these poor refugees?".
If the Sioux indians started firing rockets into Virginia, what would we do? They'd be demolished in minutes. But wait, the US is the evil occupier? How is that fair??
It's such a disproportionate attitude that some Americans have that Israel needs to tolerate, nay, HELP the people who want their existence to be erased off the map. Wake the ***** up and stop eating the media bytes you're served up on your comfy computer and television and actually look at the situation the same way you'd view it if it were happening in your country. - blugill, on 01/04/2009, -24/+43I really feel sorry for the common Palestinian. They have been pawns used by the corrupt and consequently very wealthy, and thankfully long deceased Arafat and now by the Hamas terrorists. Israel is at war with the Hamas idiots. Once they are dead well at that point problem solved.
The majority of Palestinians are under educated and easily swayed. - Hetman, on 01/04/2009, -8/+26I have no doubt that scenes like that are taking place in Gaza. It is a war zone. However that video is from 2005 and is relevant in showing how horrible explosions are. But it is no relevant to this situation.
- yacinebouatrous, on 01/05/2009, -32/+50STOP the settlements inside Palestine
STOP the annexation inside Palestine
STOP the checkoints inside Palestine
STOP the blockade
And maybe extremism dissapears.
But for now it's Israel which put the conditions of an extremism rise - Shabrainiac, on 01/04/2009, -15/+32If the Israelis are committing Genocide they are doing a horrible job at it. The Palestinian population in the Gaza strip has been growing exponentially since it's modern existence.
- lemur, on 01/04/2009, -15/+32It's quite insidious if you think about it. I was watching a nightly news report the other day, and they had an Israeli representative on the show being interviewed. When the interviewer expressed his concern for innocent Palestinians, such as if they can get food, the Israeli representative replied very forcefully that the Palestinians have no food problems and that everything is fine.
The next day, the same program brought on a representative of the International Red Cross to confirm this kind of report. The interviewer posed the question: is there a problem with food in Gaza? The representative simply said "Yes" without hesitation and went on to describe in more detail about the kinds of problems they are having from the perspective of Red Cross workers on the ground.
This discrepancy between what Israel reports and what everyone else reports is so obscene to the point of being blatant lies. - Jeremyz0r, on 01/04/2009, -7/+22"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." I've read that somewhere.
- normalizer, on 01/04/2009, -7/+22Yes, maybe Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and the other nations in the region will offer them refuge.
- silent128, on 01/04/2009, -5/+20There is no such thing as Proportionality in WAR. What should Israel's response be send random rockets into gaza for the next 8 years? Israel is not targeting women and children to say that makes you an ignorant fool. There will be deaths of civilians when a terrorist group like hamas hides behind civlians and fires rockets.
- digitalsin, on 01/04/2009, -6/+20I guess to be proportionate, Israel should just fire a few hundred rockets into Gaza. Problem is, Israel isn't going to miss.
Israel is doing us (the US and UK) a big favor by fighting this headache. Hamas is no different than al quaeda, it's the same damned mindset. They are terrorists, not freedom fighters, and need to be killed. - Joe_rigby, on 01/04/2009, -7/+21This is from Sept. 23 2005 ... the title is
"Hamas Weapons Parade Accident Kills 15, including kids"
Apparently home made weapons blew up and killed/maimed participants in the parade.
Stupid. - silent128, on 01/04/2009, -3/+17http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=3b3_1230864719
Its propaganda. Check the link. - Jackson0909, on 01/04/2009, -6/+20You are unbelievably ignorant.
- iamdan1, on 01/05/2009, -2/+16People have been fighting over this area ever since Civilization began there. Sadly its not as simple as give everyone what they want, because nobody wants to stop fighting. Babylon attacked Jerusalem. Jews and Romans battled for control of the area, Persians, Crusaders, Muslims, Tarters, Mameluks, Mongols, Ottomans, British, all took over control of Jerusalem at one point. The area has been and may always be under attack by someone.
- unct, on 01/04/2009, -12/+25Why don't you bitch about Hamas using the women and children as human shields?
- JackG1980, on 01/04/2009, -17/+30what do u think hamas would do to the jews if they had their military.
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -4/+17You can just bet that the moderate gulf state leaders who fear Iran's influence in the region are hoping Hamas gets wiped off the map. The working Palestinian people have been pawns on both sides for a long time. On the West Bank you have Palestinians with a fairly decent economy, relative peace, cafe's, car dealerships, etc. Not saying it's perfect but it beats the Gaza Strip. There you have a Shanty Town ruled by Islamic Militants who will never ever recognize Israel. I think time's up for them and their terrorist ways. They can continue to totally reject the state of Israel and call for it's destruction or they could make peace and begin to reap peaceful benefits like their brothers on the West Bank. They have brought this all on themselves.
Stupid Hamas. - ReisenInaba, on 01/05/2009, -2/+15That video is from September 23, 2005:
http://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/7n4re/gr ... - digitalsin, on 01/05/2009, -4/+17You are the man
- silent128, on 01/05/2009, -5/+17Yes because Nazi Germany was attacked by Poland or any other nation. I love when ever anything to do with Israel is brought up they pick this Nazi crap up. Hamas attacked Israel, they were warned to stop, they didn't now they need to be stopped by Israeli troops. You cannot argue proporionality when all Israel is trying to do is stop hamas from firing rockets into there country.
- FatherOfTamago, on 01/05/2009, -4/+16I'd like to see the number of how many innocent civilians live in constant fear due to cowardly ***** attempting to kill them in bus stops, cafes, elementary schools, hospitals, etc.
How many people have to actually die before you are allowed to fight back? Oh, and where is that rule written about once you are pushed to defend yourself, you better only kill the same number of people as were killed from amongst your own victims? There is ONE WAY to win a war: convincingly. Israel didn't start it, but I hope to god they finish it...for the sake of both the Israelis AND the Palestinians. I can't wait until the Palestinians agree that Israel has a right to exist and eventually establish normal and peaceful relations (and trade). It will be a beautiful thing for the Palestinians then...but I'm afraid that day is still a long day away. - doom777, on 01/04/2009, -5/+17Proportionality is stupid. When someone punches me repeatedly, I am not expected to only punch back with the same force. I will punch at full strength, even if they are weaker than me.
- JackG1980, on 01/04/2009, -36/+48Finally those terrorist got what been coming to them. Hamas will never be a peaceful group and will continue to target innocent people. This is the only way. I really cant see why many people on digg are supporting a terrorist group.
- Ymeg, on 01/04/2009, -16/+28Israel's goal is not to target the civilians. Their goal is to target Hamas.
I'm not sure why this is even questioned. - friday1970, on 01/05/2009, -1/+13Poidh, it's amazing that you're being buried. You put facts out there and those diggers who bury you are purely in denial.
What you have written is true and these can all be verified by simple google searches. - digitalsin, on 01/04/2009, -11/+23Finally someone who has some sense. Thank you.
- lifeandtimes, on 01/05/2009, -1/+12You completely missed his point apparently. If they can smuggle in rockets they can smuggle in food and medical supplies. So, instead of spending money on rocket smuggling, they could spend money on food and medical supplies.
- lifeandtimes, on 01/05/2009, -3/+14Real life military operations don't work like Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon. You can send in "stealthy commando" teams and when they get discovered they're dead. How would you get Israeli spec-ops into a populated city block and get them back out without making any noise? Gaza shouldn't have elected Hamas, plain and simple.
When Americans elected Bush and got war people blamed Bush AND the voters who elected him. At least that is how it read here on Digg. So why do the people of Gaza get a pass and not Americans? Gaza elected a government set on the destruction of Israel and now they're paying for it. That's not to say that I'll give Israel a pass on anything. However, considering how few civilians have been killed I would say Israel is doing a fairly decent job of minimizing civilian losses. If Israel wasn't trying to minimize civilian losses, the death toll would be in the tens of thousands, not hundreds. - Samuraikhx, on 01/04/2009, -19/+30Godbless you pennyfan

Yes, Egypt is helping by shooting those trying to get into Egypt. - weeFred, on 01/04/2009, -7/+17Israel doesn't want you to see the 3 dead Hamas guys wearing military fatigues in the middle of a bunch of dead civilians? Surely that just proves their point that Hamas hides and fires rockets in civilian areas? You blame Israel for retaliating, I blame Hamas for starting a war and endangering civilians.
Heres another video for you, Hamas shooting mortar shells from the UN school building on october 29th (yes thats during the ceasefire), enjoy.

- ciaran036, on 01/05/2009, -8/+17I think it's now at 12, - 12 deaths in a space of eight years. The rockets are useless.
On the other hand Israel have murdered almost 500 Palestinians within 1 week.
To include even just the past two years - the number of Palestinians dead go into the thousands.
The death toll figures are on wikipedia too.
Disproportionate and wholly unjustifiable.
Those are undisputed facts - you can make your own conclusions based on them... -
