Is North Korea's Kim Jong Il dead?
japantoday.com — Is Kim Jong Il dead? According to a professor at Japan's Waseda University, North Korea ’s “Dear Leader” passed away in the fall of 2003 and a stand-in has been fooling the world for at least five years.

- jgzman, on 08/24/2008, -2/+24Not in North Korea, it wouldn't. We get practically no data out of that country, and I doubt the people take the time to look up to see who, precisely, is screwing everything up.
- kuzotz, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Ask the Swedish. They got an Embassy in N.Korea. They support Americans like stay in N.Korea using the Swedish Embassy (read it on the US embassy site as it is also a tourist destination well you know the parts they want foreigners to see).

US thinks its right, other countries are wrong... but the other countries think they are right and the US is wrong.. "everyone is good in their own mind"

- spanner, on 08/24/2008, -1/+9I have to wonder if a satellite is accurate enough to measure a human to an accuracy of 2.5cm. This doesn't smell right....
- TheEclipse, on 08/24/2008, -0/+10How did you know we have a smelloscope? SPY!
- Wrathernaut, on 08/24/2008, -1/+2Indeed, this at least was an improbable but possible up until that point.
Even the highest resolution pictures from air-breathing planes available on google earth aren't that good, but 2.5cm measurements from space?
Inconceivable! - GhostRidr, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1It wouldn't be about measuring 2.5cm, it would be about comparing two sizes, one that would have known dimensions. For example, we know satellites can read letters off of license tags, so say a person was photographed standing next to a car, and you could see the tag. You already know the tags dimensions, so you make a relative measurement between the person, and the tag, and then you then know how tall they are.
- spanner, on 08/24/2008, -1/+9I have to wonder if a satellite is accurate enough to measure a human to an accuracy of 2.5cm. This doesn't smell right....
- cmallinson, on 08/24/2008, -12/+193No, he's not dead. I was playing golf last weekend with some friends, and we only had three, so he joined us for the round. It was unbelievable. He got 16 holes in one. He was lights out.

- mikephimikephi, on 08/24/2008, -4/+215FTA:
"American spy satellites succeeded in photographing Kim. An analysis of the photographs led to an astonishing conclusion: Kim had grown 2.5 cm!"
1. Would this conclusion be reached by shadow analysis?
2. Ever heard of shoes?- Wanger1234, on 08/24/2008, -0/+112The funny thing is that Kim Jong Il is known to wear platform shoes. I wouldn't be surprised if he gradually increase the height of the platform with each successive pair, you know, just to make sure no body suspects anything.
- IphtashuFitz, on 08/24/2008, -1/+28It's possible the spy satellite got pictures of him shoeless. I seriously doubt intelligence officers would be taken in by something as obvious as a pair of shoes if they really are able to snap photos of people clear enough from space to attempt to measure their height.
- Dozernotz, on 08/24/2008, -8/+2@iphtashufitz
Pretty big if. I mean, I know spy satellites are good but good enough to measure a difference of 2.5cm from space? Seriously?
Note: That was two question marks short of actually calling shennanigans. - johndi, on 08/24/2008, -2/+25I'm not so confident in the intel guys after what they claimed to be seeing in satty photos of Iraq.
- Dozernotz, on 08/24/2008, -8/+2@iphtashufitz
- directedition, on 08/24/2008, -2/+26Now I'm very curious. How do you measure someone's height from a satellite photo? Is it just me? Or at those pictures usually form the top-down. =/

- cannarymburns, on 08/24/2008, -3/+13the earth is round... they didn't have to take a shot of him from straight up, they could've done it at an angle where they could see him instead of just a shadow. btw, firefox spell check is retarded, it underlined could've...
- Reclinatron, on 08/24/2008, -0/+23Shadows and algebra would be a good way.
- cloudberries, on 08/24/2008, -0/+25Using CSI's magical pixel elimination software, and Photoshop's "Sharpen" tool
- OneLess, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5A shadow, information on the time of day when the photo was taken, and some trigonometry.
- Magicmasta, on 08/24/2008, -0/+92,5 cm is not allot, I don't think satellites generally have a high enough resolution to get that accurate, even with a low sun.
Also if the shadow is not cast on a level area the length gets influenced.
update:
The latest satellites have a resolution between 4 and 10 cm, which is not enough for the said result. - useful, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1if its dusk/dawn/winter when the photo is taken then the shadow can be long enough for an accurate measurement of height
- Kinneas12, on 08/24/2008, -0/+1I do this often as part of my profession. Yes, you take the shadow, the location of the satellite, the location of the Sun, and do some math.
- directedition, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3A shadow is the first thing to come to mind, but it only works in the world of mathematicians. Slight changes in the grade of the ground can change the distance of a shadow far too much to make accurate judgements like "2.5 cm"
- IphtashuFitz, on 08/24/2008, -1/+3It's possible they caught the guy out sunbathing somewhere, or otherwise laid out in a prone position. That would make it easier to determine his height. It certainly wouldn't be a long shot for a spy satellite to snap a picture of him like that if he was known to swim at certain pools, lakes, etc. Just train the cameras on those spots when he's believed to be there and let them snap away for a few hours. And if he had something of known dimensions in the same photo (even a book or a DVD case lying next to him - he's known to love Hollywood movies) it'd provide an excellent reference to use as a measure.
I know a guy who worked for Mitre (a government contractor that works on all sorts of classified stuff) back in the 50's & early 60's. He described seeing a series of photos taken from a spy plane. (Probably something like a U2 or SR-7, but I'm not sure). The photos were a series that started showing some large body of land in the US, followed by a closeup of a town, followed by a closeup of a golf course in that town, followed by a closeup of one of the holes in the golf course, followed by a closeup of the green where you could make out some players. In the last photo you could apparently read the brand name off one of the golf balls. If the government had the ability to do that 50 years ago then it wouldn't surprise me all that much if they could take photos from spy satellites that are detailed enough to accurately measure a person down to the centimeter. - Magicmasta, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2The latest model is the KH-13 resolution 40-100 mm (supposedly).
It's allot easier to get clear pictures from spy planes than satellites due to interference from the atmosphere etc.
there's a good reason hubble is in outer space and not on the top of a mountain. - directedition, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Yeah..... there is a good reason for that. Atmosphere gets in the way of space photography. You know how your camera can't focus when you get close enough to the lens? Well that's how it is with the Hubble as well. It can't exactly see what's going on on earth.
- phrozted, on 08/24/2008, -8/+1You're not funny.
- xeomage, on 08/24/2008, -0/+22Honestly when I read that my first thought was that if they had such a photo it was more likely taken by a spy, not a satellite. They'd probably say it was a satellite because they wouldn't want to admit they had spies in North Korea, with the added benefit of making enemies wonder if they could tell 2.5cm _height_ differences from space.
- IphtashuFitz, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3Good point. It also could have been taken at an oblique angle from aircraft flying high over South Korea. Since the 50's the US has had spy planes with incredible optics in them. 50 years of technological advances to those spy plane cameras could easily account for this. If they had intelligence that Kim was going to be in a certain place at a certain time it wouldn't be to difficult to target him for some candid photos.

- ultraseamus, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1I need to stop reading articles more then a few hours old, commenting sucks when you know no one will see it (except maybe the person you are replying to, but since I almost always go against what they are saying it usually does not go well). Anywho, I would like to think that the people that analyzed the images are smart enough to not be fooled by different shoes. They could have easily measured from his ankles up. As far as how they could do it: I look at something free and open to anyone like Google earth, it can get close enough to see people walking around, but no close enough to get much more detail. That is what is open to the public, the government spy departments would have much much higher resolution, especially when they focus on one tiny spot. And when a picture is taken at any kind of angle you can obtain any measurement you want from it.
- ganjamonsta, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1i would think they just use lasers, kind of like those tapeless measures you can get from home depot

Satellite photography can resolve something to 2.5 cm? Reminds me of the lame ass TV shows were the forensics expert does a zoom on a low resolution grainy photo. I had the idea of a comdey skit where the forensic experts keeps zooming in till he see atoms and then strings proving string theory.- Rivetgeek, on 08/24/2008, -2/+7they commonly resolve license plates from sat photos.

- philz, on 08/24/2008, -1/+3In the cold war the satellites had a resolution of 8cm - so I guess yes, they could see that. But I doubt that they use this to mease Lil' Kim..
- HayString, on 08/24/2008, -2/+1How can you get a measurement of 2.5cm with a tool with a resolution of 8cm? If that were somehow the case, it would more accurately be "2.5cm +/- 4cm." The error is greater than the actual measurement.
- ZebZ, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3You don't think technology could go from a 8cm resolution to a 2.5cm resolution in the 20 years or so since the cold war ended?

- IphtashuFitz, on 08/24/2008, -2/+23I think Saddam Hussein was known to have something like at least 5 body doubles. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if Kim also has body doubles, and it also wouldn't surprise me very much if the DPRK did something like this. Kim Il Sung was North Koreas first leader, and he groomed is son Kim Jung Il to rule once he was gone. Kim Jung Il doesn't have any offspring to groom, so there's no clear path of succession. The Kim's are/were revered as almost godlike. The "cult of Kim" permeates all aspect of North Korean life, and every household is required to have at least one photo of each of the Kim's hanging on a wall. Without another Kim to rule once Kim Jung Il is gone I'm sure the ruling party is scared of the reaction of the North Korean people. I could certainly see them attempt to put off the inevitable as long as possible by pulling a stunt like this.
- RawGamer, on 08/24/2008, -4/+2Didn't you watch the 60 minute interview with FBI agent Piro? Saddam had no body doubles. Don't believe every stupid conspiracy theory you read in the news.
If Kim Jong Il was dead, they would've replaced him with some other tyrant instead of using a body double.- SheVibe, on 08/24/2008, -0/+6The guy befriended him in custody of the US Gov after they captured hium. So how is this first hand knowledge? Obviously Saddam said he never did but what does that mean? Don't take everything at face value.
- solid12345, on 08/24/2008, -1/+6Saddam had no body double? Did you watch the Iraq war coverage on TV at all in 2003? They had an old pitiful white-haired man standing in for Saddam giving a speech for Iraqis to resist the US.
- Spaceboy492, on 08/24/2008, -0/+7Saddam had no body doubles? Did you watch Arrested Development?
- IphtashuFitz, on 08/24/2008, -0/+5Clarification: I know Kim has children. But none have ever really been shown publicly, which is something they'd do to groom them for taking over as ruler. Perhaps this is an attempt to provide the time necessary to properly groom his son. But even Kim Jong woon is around 20 years old now, and would likely be making public appearances with his father by now if he was going to be the next leader.

- notanidiot, on 08/24/2008, -18/+4Eh, who needs a body double, North Koreans all look the same anyway.
- simplyintricate, on 08/24/2008, -3/+8All idiots act the same way regardless if you say you're notanidiot
- zyklon, on 08/25/2008, -1/+1Yes, his name is very ironic, is it not?
- notanidiot, on 08/24/2008, -8/+1Geez, someone can't take a joke. By the way, its "regardless of if", not regardless if, tard.
- Frost9999, on 08/24/2008, -0/+7I think 'regardless of whether' makes more sense
- rezivor, on 08/24/2008, -1/+4wow what a douche bag
- notanidiot, on 08/24/2008, -2/+5Oh, everyone needs to lighten up. I've lived in South Korea for a year, and just so you know, Koreans generally try to look the same. There are of course exceptions, but there is what they call an ideal look, including weight, height, and facial structure that they strive for. Walk around in Seoul for one day, and you will see at least 10 women with masks over their face, to hide their scars from a recent plastic surgery. They most commonly have surgery on their eyelids to make it so their eyelids fold over when they are open, which is something I would never notice.
And that is in the "Americanized capitalist" South Korea. North Korea is communist, and they strive even more to fit into the crowd and never stick out so that they maintain their national identity. So, unless any of you are actually from North Korea, I don't see that you have any reason to be offended by such a comment, because I can tell you now, no North Korean would be offended, they would most likely take it as a compliment.

- endustry, on 08/24/2008, -12/+7Rosie O'Donnell would make a good Kim Jong Il double, IMHO.
- Erythroxylum, on 08/24/2008, -4/+6I doubt it. Jong-Il may be (or may've been depending on the accuracy of this professor's claims) an America-hating, pinko commie *****, but he is nowhere near as fat as Rosie O'Donnell.
- krisscofield, on 08/24/2008, -3/+39It's kind of sirry. But, not rearry.

Leaked spy video. (Not really but not a rickroll)- HayString, on 08/24/2008, -0/+3Burried for not being a rickroll. If I'm going to click on a misleading youtube link it damn well better be a video of Rick Astley.
- captainslack, on 08/24/2008, -2/+21This same thing happened to Paul McCartney!!
- ImpicuS, on 08/24/2008, -1/+6How can anybody know for sure? The DPRK has one of the most secretive societies on the planet. It does not matter anyway. They still have the leader (body double/clone or not) and are given special anti-hunger noodles to work the dilapidated cooperatives harder.

- BotchaMcCoola, on 08/24/2008, -2/+1It would be a smart idea. They can keep extorting money from the US and both North and South rip us off for benefits from the DMZ and military spending forever. (Is there some way the politicians and War Industry can get such things going in Iraq or Afghanistan? Somehow the USA population won and they were not able to make it happen in Vietnam.) Anyone know what are the current annual expenses to us for the Korean War and its effects? How about the cumulative total in current dollars figure?

- TheHardDisk, on 08/24/2008, -1/+7While the body doubles of Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong Il have been disposed of, the REAL characters are strolling down Hollywood Boulevard trying to make a buck by getting tourists to "donate" for photos taken of them thinking they are impersonators..
