- Jerky1312, on 11/12/2008, -6/+60We'll leave once all the big oil contracts have been signed...
http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/06/19/africa/19ir ...
The most recent deal was a 25 year deal for Shell, who now has a monopoly on Southern Iraq's oil fields...
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/In_secret_agreement_ ... - statik99, on 11/03/2009, -9/+57Simple solution... Withdraw from Iraq. We've been there long enough, trained enough of their citizens, now it's time to leave.
- cplex, on 11/12/2008, -9/+44But but but... Leaving would be defeat!
Boy, I am glad Stephen Harper didn't get his way and Canada stayed out of Iraq. Here's hoping that you guys get out soon. - Kinneas12, on 11/13/2008, -12/+44You kids realize this was an Iraqi soldier and not some terrorist? I wonder what those two Americans had to say to get themselves killed. I'm sure the guy knew he wasn't going to live either. But go ahead and just demonize the other guy. I'd gamble they said something pretty ***** stupid.
- techguru2006, on 11/12/2008, -7/+36Yeah, if we leave now it doesn't mean that we are "waving the white flag" as Palin suggested during the debate. It means that we care too much about the lives that are being lost overseas. Bring back the soldiers!
- WordsnCollision, on 11/12/2008, -13/+38No shame in leaving. Iraq has a stable government, a well-equipped army and is flush with oil revenues. Leave them to their own devices - if they screw up, it's on THEM, not us.
- pintomp3, on 11/13/2008, -1/+26our politicians don't want the oil, our corporations do. our politicians do what the corporations tell them.
- rmxz, on 11/13/2008, -5/+28Perhaps because they have oil, and some of our politicians wanted that oil?
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -2/+22Because you want to control the middle east and you can't control the middle east without Iraq.
It's a 3,000 year old battle ground.
Romans did it, Turks did it, Persians did it, they all did. Same for afghanistan. That one's even in the bible.
Study war history, then you know the whys and the hows just by the where. - willsani, on 11/12/2008, -6/+24Well... if they know how to kill an American soldier, then I think they've been trained plenty. So, hey, let's just get our soldier out of there...
- sroop, on 11/13/2008, -1/+17Lost season five premiere?
- pintomp3, on 11/13/2008, -4/+20Fox news: nothing to see here folks. this is how they greet liberators.
- swazo, on 11/13/2008, -4/+18If i was packing heat, and you slapped me in front of everyone, id probably ***** you up too.
edit: the article does not say it but the solider was in fact slapped in front of everyone. Iraqis soldiers take this as a serious form of disrespect. You're on their land, deal with their customs. - Intervene, on 11/13/2008, -5/+19The Iraqi guy got slapped in the face and felt humiliated. It wasn't a "dispute"
- stigma, on 11/13/2008, -0/+14The iraqi was apparently slapped.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/11/13/2418 ... - kragil, on 11/13/2008, -11/+24You could say he just defended his country from foreign troops and that every country with american occupiers should do the same. And that those soldiers died because they invaded a foreign country not because some dude shot them.
But that would not be politically correct on digg. Digg is just liberal in specific cases .. - SummerNight, on 11/13/2008, -0/+12your citizens don't want the oil, your cars do. The citizens do what it takes to keep their cars running.
- ChineseDemocrat, on 11/13/2008, -7/+18that is very funny.
So basically we forget every single system, mechanic, rules, pression, power-relation, that is going on in the world, and believe that if countries are not doing well "after we leave" then it's their fault.
We forget the Decade long embargo
The fact that we pretty much spilled gas all over these countries, and lighted many matches.
It's exactly what the colonialist said when they left : " see we educated you, we gave you all, now if you ***** up, it's your fault ..."
think of congo, of zaire, think of africa ... oh, sorry i forgot how a lot of the new generation ACTUALLY think that africa deserve its situation, that it's THEIR fault. - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -5/+16From a neutral point of view, you look like this:
I have a few cats in a cage, you put many dogs with them and when the cats scratch the dogs you go all "OMG OUR POOR DOGS GET THEM OUT OF THERE".
Nationalism turns people into ***** retards and defies common sense, the troops signed up for this, the Iraqis didn't. All my sympathy goes to them by default. - swazo, on 11/13/2008, -0/+10http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197 ...
- ChonoonFiend, on 11/13/2008, -1/+11Contrary to your belief, Obama will not end the war.
- drgmdp, on 11/13/2008, -3/+13you forgot that iraq was a pretty stable place before US invasion
- vertigo32, on 11/13/2008, -1/+10This is two separate actions. Both are wrong.
The American soldier who slapped this Iraqi probably was in the wrong and absolutely should not have publically humiliated him like that. Even if it was justifed, things like that sour our image and make it more difficult to achive our missions and tarnish the world's opinion of America.
The Iraqi soldier absolutely should not have fired on allied troops (or anyone for that matter) out of anger. This was completely unjustified and murder. That is unacceptable in any context, if he can't maintain his composure over being slapped he has no business carrying a gun.
The Iraqi killing these Americans doesn't mean it was ok to slap him, nor does slapping this Iraqi justify him shooting these Americans. Both were wrong, although not equally - murder is worse then assault. - kisforkat, on 11/13/2008, -6/+15As a former soldier in the US Army, I am disgusted with some of these comments.
If I had known that some of you guys are who I was supposed to be fighting to protect, I might not have bothered. - s4g4n, on 11/13/2008, -4/+12Blueforce: Jihad has disconnected from server (reason: teamkilling)
- spepin, on 11/13/2008, -4/+12Mission...... Accomplished?
- summerpuente, on 11/13/2008, -2/+10Has it really come down to petty arguments?
There is no shame in admission of a failed plan. Try something new if we're going to stay there god damnit. Better yet, just bring those boys and girls home. - tumbler360, on 11/13/2008, -1/+9What was the quarrel about? The iraqi had to know firing his weapon was suicide so what made him so mad that he made that decision?
- Delphium226, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8I trust you'll be signing up for a tour then?
- linagee, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8You don't get it. The hand that put the dogs in the cage is not the same hand that wants to remove them, even if they do come from the same country.
- georgemason01, on 11/13/2008, -1/+9If you think Obama is eager to withdraw from Iraq you're in for a serious letdown. Look no further than his Chief of Staff selection for a preview of our Middle East policy.
- Skab, on 11/13/2008, -1/+9Wow, I wonder how this news is going over in Iraq.
- MWeather, on 11/13/2008, -1/+8Our politicians sit on the board of directors of those corporations.
- calebhawk, on 11/13/2008, -4/+11when you going to get is
- Testiculese, on 11/13/2008, -1/+8We get over 1/2 our oil from other places than the ME. It's not the citizens.
The corporations know they can rob Iraq blind, but they can't rob Canada blind, so where do you think our military goes? - coyote1284, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7That's how we know Iraq *had* WMDs, we have the receipts.
- tarley, on 11/13/2008, -11/+18Pretty funny considering how many Iraqi soldiers have been killed by US troops that this makes news!
- Waiting2awake, on 11/13/2008, -2/+9Please - he was angry at people in his country not understanding the culture, and were never asked to be there in the first place...
Your analogy to the school kids would only be appropriate if you are using the movie Red Dawn as a point.
Insurgents = Anyone that doesn't want the Americans there.
Which is another way of saying:
Insurgents = Anyone, anywhere, that doesn't let American corporations walk all over their rights. - rromansanturio, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6England is not in the Bible
- swazo, on 11/13/2008, -4/+10what the ***** is wrong with you.
- Foot56, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6I think Bush made our national security weaker let just look at a couple of things.
1. Bin Laden and top Al-Qaida Leaders are still alive and planning in Pakistan (we never had the right amount of troops or support forces aka Special Ops in Torah Bora(sp?) and let them escape)
2. We invaded Iraq witch put a huge strain on our military and ability to respond to other situations.
3.We created more terrorist and fueled Muslim extremist ideas invading Iraq (over 1,000,000) citizens killed and the whole Abu Gray did not help)
So just because we have not been attacked directly in the U.S (our embassies have been attack numerous amounts of times) does not mean Bush has done something to repel those attacks. I just think the world has a whole recognized it has a problem and has made it harder to plan and carry out attacks. - orlyfactor, on 11/13/2008, -3/+9They have it on a chalkboard.
Iraqis killed: 200,000 (or something)
US Killed: 4,000
I think they're winning... - Intervene, on 11/13/2008, -1/+7http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/a ...
The Iraqi Interior Ministry said that the soldier opened fire after he was slapped publicly by an American colleague. Many Iraqi men, especially in the military, are conscious of any perceived slight to their honour. - vertigo32, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6@kisforkat
I understand your point, but this was the actions of a single man, not the Iraqi Security Forces as a whole. It was a simple crime of passion / murder.
There are plenty of legitimate arguments about why we are in Iraq, legitimate questions about the true loyalty of the Iraqi Security Forces, etc...but I personally don't think they come into play here.
In my eyes, from the bits and pieces of this story that have come out, this isn't really different then when a guy is punched or embarassed in a bar and comes back with a gun. The only difference here is that he wasn't the only one with a gun.
Saying that the Iraqi Security Force hates and wants to kill Americans because of this incident isn't much different then saying the United States Marines want to rape and murder Japanese girls because a few criminals in Okinawa did. It's an unfortunate event, definitely. But it does happen from time to time. - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -2/+8Boycotting *anything* for a single day isn't going to accomplish anything. You'd never get enough people together to make a significant impact.
- orlyfactor, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6Consider the audience of said news.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5Just as much as you can count on the right to not need a reason to send other people's children off to die.
- Testiculese, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5You want them to stay? Why, so you have something to watch on the 6pm news?
