FTA: Development of the Akkas field could boost the economy in Sunni areas, where support for the government remains tenuous.
Has the surge, paying off the armed militias, and Iraqi solidarity actually provided enough security to maintain gas production in Anbar? Is the corrupt Iraqi government actually planing or capable of providing services or distributing benefits to the Iraqi people with potential gas and oil money? No doubt this could be a major step forward. Unfortunately, contracts between private oil companies and nations with week unstable governments rarely work out for the benefit of their citizens. I fear this will eventually upset any stability that exists and bring about new waves of violence to the Iraqi people. But if average Sunni families in Anbar benefit from Europe happily buying less gas from Putin, I would consider it the first real Iraqi victory so far. Unfortunately, it still would be a pretty crappy return on the hundreds of thousands of lives, the hundreds of billions of dollars, the national prestige, etc. etc. etc.- obliviousfool, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Rarely work out for the benefit of their citizens? How about never?
