Iranian military convoy rocked by mystery explosion
telegraph.co.uk — The explosion took place in the Tehran suburb of Khavarshahar as the military convoy left a munitions' warehouse controlled by the Revolutionary Guards. According to reports received by Western officials, the convoy was taking a consignment of military equipment to Hizbollah, the Shia Muslim militia Iran supports in southern Lebanon...

- elrabendino, on 07/25/2008, -2/+6just a reminder: according to the UN-sponsored agreement signed 2 years ago to end the war in lebanon, hizbollah terrorists should not be allowed to receive any more ammo.
lebanon, syria and iran have been blatantly ignoring this UN resolution ever since it was passed, and have been pumping these terrorists full of weapons.
a very similar situation to what's going on in the Gaza strip. once israel pulled out of there, most of the palestinian money has gone into smuggling insane amounts of weapons in, instead of building up their economy and giving something back to their people.
this just goes to show the liberal people in the West how different the arab mentality is, and why general assumptions about logic and morals do not apply.- xptweakerntn, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3DIGG! DIGG! DIGG! DIGG!
- dkapuchino, on 07/25/2008, -1/+2There was a UN resolution, and the Arabs have blatantly ignored in?

... And for the record, this list, assembled by Dr. Stephen Zunes, is ONLY inclusive of Security Concil resolutions that call for action, not of acts that merely "condemn" an action nor does it include several resolutions that are from the past and are considered moot, nor does it include certain resolutions that are ambiguous in their calls. - elrabendino, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1i think that israel may have a tough time implementing many resolutions since it cannot trust the other side to not exploit the new situations.
there are different sets of morals guiding the western and eastern worlds, precluding many times a true, good-faith agreement. particularly when one side is a western democracy, and the other is a (country run by a) terrorist organization.
how can you, as a western country, sign an agreement to end hostilities when the other side will breach it on every opportunity it gets? that's what i mean by different sets of morals.- aamer, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1Israel is only a "western democracy" for its citizens. Would you consider the US a western democracy if it took Native Americans and walled them off, bulldozed their houses, and made them go through military checkpoints just to get to work?
People only turn to terrorism when it's the only option left. - elrabendino, on 07/26/2008, -1/+1i think you got it the other way around.
if native americans were incessantly, from day 1, commiting horrid acts of terror targeted specifically at american civilians, then the US government indeed would have no choice but to build a wall to keep them out, bulldoze places housing terrorists, and make them go thru checkpoints in order to find, day after day, bombs being smuggled in.
and, yes, i would still consider the US to be a democracy at that point.
"People only turn to terrorism when it's the only option left"? there are many, many, many poor americans, europeans and israelis, without many "options" in life. i don't see them terrorizing civilians in neighboring countries. they work hard and try to get by.
why is it that the vast majority of violence in the world is initiated by muslims? i'm trying not to generalize, as i believe that most muslims are good people. nevertheless, there appears to be something in that religion, or in middle eastern mentality, that views terrorism as a legit way of life.
and that kinda ruins it for everyone else in the world. - aamer, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1who says no one else terorrizes? that's a ridiculous statement. there are examples of non-muslim terrorists everywhere from the christian members of the ira to the hindu members of the tamil tigers (which, i believe, still holds the record for most suicide bombings).
you say you're not trying to generalize, but that's hardly the case. i would strongly disagree with the statement that the "vast majority of violence" is initiated by muslims. i think if you were to factor in state-sponsored violence then the us and israel would be at least as guilty if not more.
and by your logic, there are also many many many poor muslims in the world who do not terrorize either.
the fact is that israel was created in the homeland of another people by force. there's just no justification for this. i don't see how you could expect anyone else to react if someone comes to your home and just claims it as their own. - elrabendino, on 07/27/2008, -1/+1well, i would hardly call a UN resoultion announcing the creation of israel something that "there's just no justification for". the World has weighed in everything, and decided for it. it was not done by force.
if anything was done by force, it was the war that the entire arab nation started immediately following said resolution, blatantly and forcefully defying a decision made by the World. and too bad they started it, coz it made them and local arab residents lose land.
further, it is the homeland of the jews just as much, if not more so, as it is of some of the arabs. read the bible, for starters, and move on to later reliable sources. jews have lived there since thousands of years ago. however, it is a well-known fact that what you call "palestinians" are actually a mixture of arab immigrants from all over the place. nobody even called himself that way until the 1960s.
extensive propaganda has actually distorted history. here's a site summarizing some facts which have been lost along the way, but which paint the actual situation (which you personally may not like):
http://therefinersfire.org/forgotten_facts.htm
- aamer, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1i don't believe in the bible, but yes i understand jews have lived there. and lots of people have lived in lots of places ... doesn't make it OK to raid their land just because your great great great great grandfather maybe might have lived there.
jews have not lived in israel as a majority population since the romans invaded over two thousand years ago. if living some place two thousand years ago gives you a claim to the land, then perhaps we should start to redraw the world map for several dozen countries today.
palestinians are mix of different arab races ... so? what's the point? jews living in israel today are even more mixed!!! why do they get claim to the land? the point i'm making is that it's not fair to raze palestinian homes which have existed, in some cases, for several generations for american, russian, and european jews. i have no problem with the jews that have been living there for ages, but i do have a problem with jews from other countries getting ownership of land that has been inhabited for several generations by palestinians.
also, it doesn't particularly matter that they didn't call themselves "palestinian" until recent times. that's true for lots of arab countries including saudi arabia, kuwait, emirates, qatar, and iraq just to name a few. does that mean that they do not also have claim to their respective countries? and yes, most of the people in these countries are also of mixed ancestry.
thanks for the link ... i do agree with some of the facts there. for example, as i previously said, i have no problem with jews who have been living in that land for ages staying there and having fair protection under the law. however, some of facts in this link just don't make any sense. for example:
"There is only one Jewish state. There are 60 Muslim countries, including 22 Arab ones."
... ummm yeah, and there are 50 states in the US, so is it ok for the "world" to lay claim to one of them? hell, native americans should definitely be able to get at least one of the states back since they were the original inhabitants, no?
also, this one:
"Pan-Arabism or the doctrine of Muslim Caliphate declares that all land that used to belong to Muslims must be returned to them. Thus, Spain, for example, must eventually be re-conquered."
... ok, this just doesn't have any place in this list. that's one doctrine that some people may follow. not all muslims believe this though.
anyway, whether it was a un resolution or not, it doesn't make it the right/moral thing to do. and i find it rather ironic that you're supporting your pro-israel stance by using this un resolution when i just listed more than 2 dozen un resolutions that israel has blatantly ignored :-)

- ImperialRome, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4did someone's predator drone go off the reservation?
or was this a symptom of a Seal team visit? - elrabendino, on 07/25/2008, -1/+2sounds plausible.
unfortuantely, there are times when you can't accept diplomacy's inefficacy. - proliance, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4It was most likely an accident, but its nice to think someone may actively be doing something to sabotage Iran's efforts at starting a new war.
- elrabendino, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1i totally agree.
when a country is run by a group of religious fanatics who truly believe that Allah commands them to destroy anyone who is different from them, that spells trouble. and of the mass-destruction type.
i just wanna work, create a family, build a house. how can i dream too far into the future, when i know that a radical government somewhere will deploy its nukes once it finally made them? depressing.
- elrabendino, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1i totally agree.
- dkapuchino, on 07/25/2008, -2/+2I wonder how long it will take until some Gay Iranian is forced into confession, falsely admitting he was a mossad agent.
