Iran to hang 30 for murder, other crimes
reuters.com — Iran plans to execute 30 people in the capital Tehran on Sunday for murder, drug smuggling and other crimes, newspapers reported on Saturday. Police have arrested dozens of people in recent weeks in a new crackdown on "immoral behavior" in the Islamic Republic, whose human rights record is often criticized in the West...

- chicofaraby, on 07/26/2008, -13/+9Iran uses capital punishment.
Just like the USA.- DrDreyfus, on 07/26/2008, -2/+13I'm fairly sure no one's been civilly executed for smuggling in America.
- chicofaraby, on 07/26/2008, -16/+5That makes a difference.... how?
- DrDreyfus, on 07/26/2008, -4/+11In America (and most of the sane world), we subscribe to the principal "The punishment fits the crime".
You don't kill someone on charges of smuggling.
What the ***** is wrong with you? - chicofaraby, on 07/26/2008, -11/+3"You don't kill someone on charges of smuggling."
Iranians do.
It doesn't matter what the crime is. Killing people is wrong. Iran and the USA are just the same on this question and we are just as wrong as they are. There is no difference. - bernk1, on 07/27/2008, -2/+6Chicofaraby: "Killing people is wrong" is simplistic. It is context that makes it right or wrong. That's the big difference between killing and murdering. If someone is smashing in the skull of a -year-old girl, you stop that person even if you have to kill them (unless, of course -- oh, never mind about that!)
- dshPls, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2"It doesn't matter what the crime is. Killing people is wrong."
You're a minority with this opinion, thankfully, because it's illogical and would simply lead to the destruction of civilization if we all were as stupid as you are. You're not willing to defend your basic human rights, your life and your family. That's fine by me, just understand that there are very few people as short-sighted and ridiculous as yourself.
- jamessavik, on 07/26/2008, -4/+11We don't do it en mass and many American prisoners die of old age on death row as they have years of appeals and new trials in many cases. In my home state we just executed a guy who had been on death row for 20 years: over 100 appeals and a new trial.
You can not honestly say that we are in the same class as Iran. We bust our ass to make sure we get capital punishment right.- chicofaraby, on 07/26/2008, -13/+5As far as capital punishment we are exactly the same as Iran. Whether you group up executions or spread them over the year, the result is the same.
- DrDreyfus, on 07/26/2008, -3/+12@chicofaraby
No. - Waiting2awake, on 07/27/2008, -4/+4@Dreyfus - Yes.
If I kill you with a gun - you are dead. If I kill your family one, by one, they are dead.
If I kill them all in one swoop - they are still dead.
See the difference? Of course not, because you are Propaganda 101 where the US uses force to maimed, kill, dismember and oppress - it is called co-lateral damage. When the other people do it - it is terr-rism.
Dufus.
Bet you still have some freedom fries don't cha lemming?
- bernk1, on 07/26/2008, -2/+8The problem is that the use capital punishment NOT in the way that the US does. There are so many reviews that it takes about 6-7 years for a death penalty to be carried out.
- chicofaraby, on 07/26/2008, -7/+3Whatever gets you through the night.
- bernk1, on 07/27/2008, -1/+7What does that mean?
- chicofaraby, on 07/27/2008, -2/+2It means that the USA is no better than Iran. They kill people. We kill people. All these "reviews" you seem to think mean something didn't save Cameron Todd Willingham from being murdered by the state.

"Man executed on disproved forensics
Fire that killed his 3 children could have been accidental
By Steve Mills and Maurice Possley | Tribune staff reporters
CORSICANA, Texas - Strapped to a gurney in Texas' death chamber earlier this year, just moments from his execution for setting a fire that killed his three daughters, Cameron Todd Willingham declared his innocence one last time.
"I am an innocent man, convicted of a crime I did not commit," Willingham said angrily. "I have been persecuted for 12 years for something I did not do."
While Texas authorities dismissed his protests, a Tribune investigation of his case shows that Willingham was prosecuted and convicted based primarily on arson theories that have since been repudiated by scientific advances. According to four fire experts consulted by the Tribune, the original investigation was flawed and it is even possible the fire was accidental..."
The USA kills innocent people. We are no better than Iran.
- fadeout, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4When was the last time America executed someone for being gay? Or for drinking alcohol?
It's only been a few months for Iran. - doctechnical, on 07/28/2008, -1/+1And like Iran, the USA is swarming with asshats and douchebags, as you have so aptly demonstrated.
- DrDreyfus, on 07/26/2008, -2/+13I'm fairly sure no one's been civilly executed for smuggling in America.
- decafmatan, on 07/26/2008, -4/+17Where are the global human rights organizations on this one... the U.N. resolutions... ? Are they all reserved for Israel?
- diggenerate, on 07/26/2008, -8/+7yeah like our country has any room to talk on human rights.
- DrDreyfus, on 07/27/2008, -3/+9Nice anti-American snipe there diggenerate - that takes a lot of guts here on Digg.
While America, of course, has many, many problems, to insinuate that we are on the same humanitarian level of Iran is irresponsible and immature.- chicofaraby, on 07/27/2008, -7/+4Iran hasn't been torturing innocent people in secret prisons like the USA.
The fact that Iran and the USA both use the death penalty isn't debatable. The USA can't claim any moral superiority over Iran when both engage in inhuman methods of punishment. - DrDreyfus, on 07/27/2008, -2/+9"Iran hasn't been torturing innocent people in secret prisons like the USA."
They aren't secret in Iran.
"The fact that Iran and the USA both use the death penalty isn't debatable. The USA can't claim any moral superiority over Iran when both engage in inhuman methods of punishment."
So you equate civil execution for someone who is guilty of "illegal relationships" with someone civilly executed for murder? - chicofaraby, on 07/27/2008, -9/+3"So you equate civil execution for someone who is guilty of "illegal relationships" with someone civilly executed for murder?"
Yes. The dead person is just as dead. Execution is never justifiable in any case.
And you are free to post some proof that Iran tortures prisoners. - Setter, on 07/27/2008, -2/+7@chicofaraby
Google "iran torture" you lazy *****.

- 0Xonox0, on 07/26/2008, -5/+6Murderers and Drug Smugglers? Hell, we kill plenty of murderers here in the US, and drug smugglers get hefty sentences as well. I don't support the death penalty myself, but I see no reason for outrage.
- BillE3, on 07/26/2008, -1/+9I suppose you think honor killings are OK too.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/27/2008, -2/+3 Don't think they happen in the states daily? What do you think gang killings are?
Say, what are the crime rates in Iran Vs the US? WHat about jailed population?
Glass houses my man, glass houses. - BillE3, on 07/27/2008, -1/+2Gang bangers kill over turf, money, drugs or supposed gangster respect. A slight difference than a father or brother murdering a teenage girl because she likes American clothes and music. Like the recent murder in America with a Muslim boy stabbing his own sister to death. Or the religious police of Iran conducting a public execution of two women "suspected" of prostitution. Gang bangers make money from prostitution.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/27/2008, -2/+3 Don't think they happen in the states daily? What do you think gang killings are?
- Tanktunker, on 07/27/2008, -1/+4RTFA; "Thirty people convicted of crimes such as murder, drug smuggling, disrupting public security, illegal relationships and stealing will be executed at dawn on Sunday," the daily quoted Tehran's prosecutor office as saying.
You don't kill people over having sex over in the US, do you?- Waiting2awake, on 07/27/2008, -1/+4 Heck, they lock people away for life, for having a natural plant with them...
I agree that Iran policies seem heavy handed - but the US has no right to complain with their drug laws.
