- infidelisto, on 10/10/2007, -24/+110yea and our F-22's will blow these piles of shiite out of the sky in 2 seconds
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -2/+78And here it is just taking off: http://www.apartment210.com/4321.jpg

- kooft, on 10/10/2007, -1/+56In all fairness, these jets wouldn't be much of a match for US fighters, but then I don't suspect that Iran is planning on dethroning America's position on the technology throne. More likely, Iran is bolstering it's indigenous arms industry to break its dependency on foreign arms merchants. I would suspect that if these jets ever do see action, it will be against the likes of post-occupation Afghanistan and post-occupation Iraq.
- MaynardJK, on 10/10/2007, -7/+53It is a bit easier to identify a hostile target in the air than it is to identify one walking around among crowds on the street. If the Iranians are stupid enough to get into an air battle with F-22s then they had better be prepared to lose their whole fleet.
They won't even see the F-22 before they are shot down. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -14/+60And both of their jets fighters are expected to defend Iran for 2.3 seconds if the Americans come knocking.
- facelogic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+46Is Iran's tactic to build warplanes with technology so outdated that the latest western countermeasures aren't backward compatible enough to counter it?
- santiago1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+43 Come on, of course they're serious..... and stop calling me Shirley!
- TheNevadaKid, on 10/10/2007, -4/+35They forget to mention that it's equiped with AK-47's taped to the wings and a trap door under the pilots feet in which he can drop molotov cocktails on people's heads.
- foopirata, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32"First time" ? This 2.5-generation fighter has been flying and was observed since the later part of the '90s. Nothing to see here.
- santiago1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+32 Quick, someone give 'em the finger while inverted above 'em!
- krakhed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28The Iranian jet is based on a F-5 which is over 40 years old so of course a brand spankin new f-22 would absolutely smoke it. The F-22 can smoke an F-15 one of the best air superiority fighters of the jet age.
- zappo1776, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26Different perspective here shows the rocket pods better. Looks obsolete like an F-5. Seriously not much of a threat.
http://www.mehrnews.com/mehr_media/image/2006/09/220385_orig.jpg - NullzipZero, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24I bet the U.S. Air Force could shoot that thing down with one of their new UCAV drones
- Meatpuppet79, on 10/10/2007, -5/+25What are they going to do with that? It looks like late 60's/early 70's technology. More saber rattling to try and convince the Iranian people of their importance in the region.
- DeskFlyer, on 10/10/2007, -5/+24Surely they can't be serious.
- heaintheavy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20You were in a 4g inverted dive with a MiG28?
- Rsardinia, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20Ya well if we wanted to bomb the entire Iraq population we could, but thats not ethical or morally right. Hard to shoot the insurgents in the thousands of innocent people just trying to live their lives. We could easily just wipe em all out at once but then the world would have their fingers on the nuke buttons (ie china/russia). Don't doubt the technology we have, just because its hard to weed out the few bad seeds of the population in Iraq cuz they blend in well doesn't mean we don't have the capacity to blow everything up at once.
- zmjone2992, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19last time the us had any air to air combat was in libyia. 2 f-14s shot down the 2 fighters with phoenix missles more than 80 miles before they reached visual range
- Albionshores, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21No, not much of a threat if you're an aircraft carrier or a US jet. Oil Tankers should be nervous though.
- Dougman82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Good thing F-5's are mostly just training jets now. Still is impressive, though, that they are producing their own stuff. There isn't a very high percentage of countries that don't just import all of their weapons from the U.S. or western europe. I'd like to see something solid on their claims of a fighter comparable to the F-18...
- SerifTheRobot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16I just want to let you know, good luck. We're all counting on you.
- DMan928, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Cool. They copied a fighter that was introduced in 1960.
Pretty soon they're gonna have the talkin' box and the movin' mictures.... - foopirata, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Oil Tankers are escorted and protected. In the Ormuz Strait, most of the traffic is under Aegis and/or carrier wings cover. Besides, it is not the platform that poses/doesn't pose a threat to traffic - it's the weapons that platform can carry and successfully launch. Argentine vs. Britain in the Falklands is a case in point.
Teeran may manage to put wings on a freezer and send it aloft, but do they have the technology to launch and direct effectively weapons-on-target? I doubt it. - allegedfastluck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
- themonkeysaid, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14looks kind of.... retro ?
..the infidels don't stand a chance. - s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12This is an obsolete fighter jet, not a bomber.
- DarthDubbya, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Awwww... Isn't that cute? Iran wants to play air-to-air with us.
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17This will make Iran's army just as difficult to defeat as Iraq's army.
- yoshihama, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Exactly. So the better comment is that Israel's F-15's (and more importantly their well trained pilots) will blow them out of the sky in 2 secs.
- Juano11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10"The AVIONICS and target acquisition of our modern jets is probably what makes them most deadly -- NOT the AVIONICS."
Huh??? - hd95, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12F22 will knock the previous generation of US fighters out of the sky in 3 seconds
- SirDiggalot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Not according to the president. This is a "war on terror," not an occupation.
- zmjone2992, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9its called a t-38
- havenophear, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11We've got a problem in Iran.
Iran? What is it?
It's a middle-eastern country that can't build a fighter jet for *****, but that's not important right now. - dakboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10We were communicating.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Well, we (American and British forces) have wiped out their military twice. It's the population that's causing the trouble.
- julp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11That'll look sweet when it's in flames and hits the ground.
- artemster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Bonzaaaaaallahu akhbar!
- allegedfastluck, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Based on the F-5, eh? That puts them only what, 45 years behind?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Irans military doctrine is still based on human wave tactics, but in a semi modern form. And with semi modern weapons, it can be a threat. You can send 200 fighter bombers towards an american ship in the gulf, and it and its allies can shoot down 199 of them, but all it takes is one to do some serious damage.
Add in the fact that the gulf is shallow and a major oil transport area, its definally not a fun thing to think about. - GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12They won't see the F-22 full stop. It is a stealth aircraft.
- havenophear, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9And once as a little 98lb fellow I knocked out Mike Tyson.
- justinx0r, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11I don't think anyone said that, actually.
- colinbg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I imagine that US jets could use these as target practice, but as much as I disprove of Iran's political views, I suppose everyone has to start somewhere, its possible 30 years they may even catch up if they steal technology and keep developing. However, given that in 30 years the word will be a different place altogether, it may just be as fruitless as the US spending on the new FA-22 raptor at 3.8bn per year.
- artemster, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Yes. The F-22's are too fast and too powerful to be able to engage these sub-sonic aircraft. There are no planes outside of history museums available to engage the new Iranian planes in combat at their speeds.
- holems, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Luckily we still have a copy of WinNuke laying around
- Gryffydd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9That's irrelevant. Look how quickly we took over the country. We wiped them out in a matter of days. It's the occupation part we're having a hard time with, for reasons just mentioned. But in full scale military assault, we're unstoppable against countries like Iraq/Iran--maybe against anybody.
- heaintheavy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I just want to let you know, good luck. We're all counting on you.
- MovieFang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Here is the Wikipedia article on F-5 technology, which is more than 40 years old:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_F-5
Putting a jet engine inside a chunk of metal to make it fly is not hard, but modern air combat is heavily decided on the guidance system, so these Iranian F-5 fighters are probably good for parades and trainings, not much more. -
