Iran's Missiles May Target Canadians
nationalpost.com — Those who focused on the possibility of Iran and Israel going to war or a strike against the U. S. Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf have overlooked the chance that attacking elsewhere might also serve Iran's strategic interests, the BBC said in an article on its Web site last week.

- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -6/+53I'm not so sure Canadians stationed in Afghanistan are a likely target as certain EU countries would be IF Iran can stop using Photoshop and actually improve their long range missile accuracy.
- DeFex, on 07/15/2008, -0/+15I wonder if they paid for their photoshop licenses.
send the piracy lawyers after them they wont know what hit them! - trackerbishop, on 07/15/2008, -5/+12how is this story getting upmodded? looks like an onion article
this is obvious propaganda from bush neocons - AchaIemoipas, on 07/15/2008, -3/+3France Presse shopped their own pic, not Iran.
That's why they were able to release the real one.
But hey, trying to separate facts from fiction when Israel and it's American colony want to wage war is pretty much useless, so why not. - ubuwalker31, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4They used Gimp, duh.

- chinauprising, on 07/14/2008, -12/+100The National Post's article reads like it could have been ghost written by someone in the Bush Administration. Get Canada's support for an attack on Iran. Use Canada's support to promote the idea in the US.

- GhostyBoy, on 07/15/2008, -0/+13Canada to media fear-mongers: You can stop now, idiots. We aren't scared.
That ***** don't fly up in the great white north, *****. - travis1982, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Canada doesn't fall victim to scare tactics as easily as other countries, ie America..no offense. For Iran to actually waste a Missile on Canada..would mean that Canada would have to be causing a significant amount of problems for Iran or that Bombing Canada would have serious ramifications that would make America rethink it's position with Iran, neither are feasible. I'm Canadian, but I don't presume to think that Canada really means ***** in the world when there are much bigger players in the game.
- McFaggot, on 07/15/2008, -2/+0we all fall for liberal fear tactics instead, like the scare cards of privatizing health care and making abortion illegal (the 2004 election, didn't work so well the next time around though)

- mriegger, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3Military budget of Iran - $6 billion
Military budget of Canada - $18.9 billion
both according to wikipedia - th3heretic, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1Photoshop is pretty expensive.... Guess Canada bought the whole CS3 suite.
- travis1982, on 07/15/2008, -0/+14hahaha. Because that's all we could do with our military budget.
- bsmeteronhigh2, on 07/15/2008, -8/+3If a missile lands in Canada, the first thing they should wonder is where did it really come from? A job for the McKenzie Brothers to be sure!
- poprocksandsoda, on 07/15/2008, -16/+12Actually, since a majority of the oil the US uses comes from Canada ... being that they are our primary supplier and have been for decades ... it makes sense to worry about such an attack.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/15/2008, -4/+18No it doesn't. It is still fear mongering, regardless on who they are trying to make fearful.
- poprocksandsoda, on 07/15/2008, -10/+5You wouldn't be part of the group of people who criticized the government for not having a plan once Baghdad fell would you? Because you can't have it both ways. Either you plan for all eventualities or you just sit back and go with the flow.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/15/2008, -2/+12Pop - Nope, I would be the one that was telling everyone that it was a lie right from the start while people - maybe not unlike yourself - were worried about WMD and mobile weapons labs and those Anthrax attacks.... How did they turn out again?
The best solution is not to invade another country that didn't do anything to you... It is called the Do unto Others rule.... Maybe you've heard of it?
BTW - you are still being a fear Monger. Iran is of no threat to Canada, nor the US, and only possibly to Israel. Stop being so cowardly, or if you can't - stop trying to get others to be as fearful. - earnjam, on 07/15/2008, -4/+1Not that I'm comparing the Iraq war to WWII, but Germany didn't do anything to us and we still invaded their country.
- oscenester, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5What?
So wait a minute. Are you telling me we actually need a LEGITIMATE reason to go to war? - MrRoboto, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7Canada supplied more crude to the US then Saudi Arabia. We were the top supplier to you folks in 2007. You need us more then you think you do. water and power are next.
- superkendall, on 07/15/2008, -5/+1You throw around the word Fear Monger quite liberally (heh), but it seems you are the one spreading fear here. Most of us realize that Iraq hitting Canada with missiles is simply one possibility of many, but you are the one trying to make us AFRAID of provoking Iran, or of war with Iran, simply because we talk about what they might do!
You are the one with fear in your heart, fear of a war with Iran which is far less likely than you think it is. - baralo, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Poprocksandsoda, Baghdad didn't fall on its own.
- groo68, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1MrRoboto i think we are set on water, the great lakes and all, i live a mile from the finger lakes. those aren't too polluted to drink from. were gonna be supplying water to the southern u.s./south west. and power is really easy to get, power plants just need approval to be built, there's money bouncing around in the system for that kind of thing, when it's needed.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1SuperKendall - Are you really suggesting that I am using fear to try and stop people from attacking a country that didn't do ***** to you? Seriously? Are you so far removed from reality that you require, or worse think others require, a reason not to attack people for no reason?
Do you have this problem in daily life? Uncontrollable urges to deck some guy sitting next to you in a coffee shop or waiting in line? Do you require a reason not to be a dick?
I have no fear of anything other than Canadian Politicians. They, and they alone have the power to hurt me and my family. As your only fear should be your government, for the same reasons. Yet, you aren't. You are more worried about people half a world away without even the ability to hurt you - all picked, spiced, and prepackaged delivered to you by the same people that brought you Iraq...
But please - feel free to continue living in fear.
- rxbudian, on 07/15/2008, -2/+6ooh... everyone fears that the Tar Sands oil production in Alberta would be interrupted when the Canadian soldiers in kandahar were attacked...
- republicker, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1yea right
- Technohamster, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Uh thanks. It's nice to know America cares about its friends.
- schrutefan, on 07/15/2008, -3/+6The USA only gets 11% of its oil from Canada.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_ ...
Canada is topping that list. YTD 2008, Canada is providing 20% of U.S. oil. And that's just crude. If you look at all petroleum products, the US relies even more on Canada. - schrutefan, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Your link shows Canada provides 20% of IMPORTS. I'm talking total oil including domestic.
- iamnos, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Mind providing a link? Oh wait, here's one:
- Coffeedemon, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5Its obvious with cowardly nonsense like that that the terrorists have 'won'.
No one is going to be launching misiles on Canada in our lifetime. Ever hear of the Atlantic Ocean? There's another one on the other side called the Pacific. Oh yeah ... theres also the Arctic to the North. Have some damn sense. What are the long range bombing capabilities of Iran? Do you think theres a snowball's chance in hell that a missile cruiser or sub (if they had one) is getting out of the Gulf undetected? Its a 10000KM flight from one place to another.- cnosal, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1RTFA - the first sentence "The BBC has raised the possibility that Iran may target NATO forces in Afghanistan, which include several thousand Canadian troops stationed in the province of Kandahar, with short-range missiles."

A little too obviously a scare tactic...
/facepalm- GhostyBoy, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3They should try someone else. Canadians aren't so great for whipping into a fear-crazed frenzy. We just don't really give a *****.

- Waiting2awake, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3When and to whom did they make a direct threat? I have heard stuff about if they are attacked they will do such and such - or that political philosophies will be removed from the pages of history.... but never a direct threat.... like calling someone an axis of evil or anything...
See my point? - hivoltage815, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Claiming that you are willing to sacrifice half of your population to ensure the destruction of Israel sounds like direct threats of war to me.
"Oh, but it's just Israel, why should we care about them." Again sounds pre-WWII. But we don't learn from history do we.

- AchaIemoipas, on 07/15/2008, -8/+37You guys are reading it wrong.
This is Canadian press. The argument made here is:
If America invades Iran, our troops in Afghanistan (which we all want out of there) will be in greater danger. So if our crazy little retarded cousins of the south pull another Iraq, we need to get out of there.- tufftugg, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11 Well, if we don't get rid of lilBush, Steve, Canadians troops will be there.

- Gardimus, on 07/15/2008, -2/+11Nobody is reading it wrong. The National Post is a right wing publication thats trying scare support for an Iranian invasion.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2"Although it has attracted little public notice yet, Ottawa, too, must be taking notice of the rising martial drumbeat and privately calculating what the risks of a war involving Iran might be for the Canadian battle group stationed less than 400 kilometres away from Tehran's eastern frontier."
You must have the IQ of a dried fig.
The only threat mentionned here is to our troops in Afghanistan. Nothing about a threat to Canada, despite what everybody who didn't read the article commented about.

Err sorry, but not all of us want the troops out of Afghanistan. Although I never supported (and am glad we didn't participate in) the Iraqi invasion, I fully support the Afghan mission. That place was a ***** ***** with the Taliban in charge with regular public stonings, mass executions, horrendous human rights abuse, and full of training camps for real terrorist *****.
We should be in there doing our job as peace keepers to make sure that we can start to raise a generation of Afghans who have the bare minimum of human rights so that they can then bootstrap their own nation/culture into something that isn't death obsessed. Now I'm not saying that we swoop in there with baseball and apple pie (in our case hockey and double-doubles), I really don't care how they govern themselves or what their belief system is as long it's not the ass-backwards hellhole it was under the Taliban.
/2ยข- AchaIemoipas, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2The situation was created by the US, they should be the ones to fix it.
I don't give half a damn about these people.
And you don't get to decide how sovereign countries govern themselves. That's what got the US in such a mess in the first place.
And I'll even add that associating ourselves to the US, and especially Israel threatens our national security. This will lead to hostility towards Canada. That never happened in 139 years, and I like it that way.
And to rebuild Afghanistan requires that we stop destroying it. If Canada wants to send actual peace keepers to rebuild once the invasion is over and the country is controlled, I'll be all for it. But that's not what were doing. That's what we pretend to be doing.
Actual missions on the ground are about finding and killing people.
We're not fighting some foreign group, we're fighting Afghan civilians who want us dead for being there. And if my country had been invaded, I'm sure I'd do the same. - bcnl, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0**qoute**

Actually the situation was created by a lot of parties.... The soviets, the US, Islamic fundamentalists, etc etc
**qoute**
I don't give half a damn about these people.
**qoute**
That's fine, I respect your right to have a isolationist/nationalist viewpoint. Personally if someone was treating me the way the Taliban treated the people there, I would hope that other people would intervene on my behalf.
**qoute**
And you don't get to decide how sovereign countries govern themselves. That's what got the US in such a mess in the first place.
**qoute**
Read what I wrote again, please. I don't care how they govern themselves.... They could choose whatever form of government they want be it tribal, socialist, republic, whatever. I would however like to give them the chance to work out something peaceful that doesn't involve death squads and brutality.
**qoute**

Everything the US has ever done is evil? I'm no fan of a lot of US foreign policy, but you'd have to be pretty ignorant to not notice that the US attempts to (also) do a lot of humanitarian work in this world. When major ***** hit's the fan, quite often they are one of the first countries there with ships full of supplies and relief workers.. Also, we're already pretty closely associated with the US so unless you plan on shutting our borders and denouncing our biggest trade partner I think that ship has already sailed

I'm sorry to say but I think you're mistaken. There has been a lot of damage done to that country (and not all of it by collation forces), but we also spend a large portion of our time rebuilding roads, securing those roads, building schools, and in general trying to raise the standard of living for those people above the pile of rocks it currently is.

Once again I say you're mistaken... You should spend some time at a local legion (seriously it's a decent place with cheap beer.... membership is like $50) Talk to some of the soldiers who have been there and your opinion might change.
Lastly if our country was invaded and we had roaming warlords all over the place, wouldn't it be nice if some other people around the world decided to come and give us a hand? - Cjsparky, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1So the situation was created by the U.S. strange...I thought it was created by the U.S.S.R. but I guess badmouthing the U.S.S.R wont get me as many Diggs as badmouthing the U.S.A. lol
***** sheep... - bcnl, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0shhhh, this is a logic free thread now.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0Both of my brothers are in Kandahar as we speak.
The Taliban's rise to power was entirely funded by the US. No use pretending. They didn't want Russia to win so they got the craziest ***** they could to control the region for money. That's when Ben Laden, a Saudi, was involved.
We're fighting civilians. Children sometimes. They fight because we're on their territory. They don't give a ***** about intentions. They starve and they refuse charity. They're proud.
Private companies hired by the US do infrastructure work. We only provide military assistance. And we guard these civilians contractors who were offered no bid-contracts.
A mass murderer that donates to charity is still a mass murderer. The bad far outweighs the good. And we're talking about war, an act in which we kill for political or economical gain, not tsunami relief or some *****.
"I would however like to give them the chance to work out something peaceful that doesn't involve death squads and brutality. "
Then why are you inforcing your views on them with bullets and explosives? You want to kill them into being peaceful.

- tufftugg, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11 Well, if we don't get rid of lilBush, Steve, Canadians troops will be there.
- and303, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Whew!...
...er I mean...HEY they didn't do anything! - Phillyz, on 07/15/2008, -2/+29Who'd ever want to hurt the Canadians, eh? What a lovely group of people!
- BryanG412, on 07/15/2008, -2/+8Iran isn't going to attack anyone because they know it will be suicide...They want either Israel or the United States to preemptively strike so they themselves look like the victims.
- spongya77, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4Because being bombed into pieces is sooooo good for the PR, is that it?
- Risingashes, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3No they don't. They want to not be attacked.
Unfortunately it seems that the American gov is moving towards an attack and the American people are powerless and unwilling to do anything.
- JasonCox, on 07/15/2008, -4/+5Apparently the Iranian leadership just discovered the South Park movie because they're blaming Canada...

- drguerra, on 07/15/2008, -3/+19National Post is right wing fear mongering. They just want Canadians to back the invasion of Iran.
- moomeep, on 07/15/2008, -3/+13nice fearmongering there...
- slayernine, on 07/15/2008, -2/+7Canada may not have a large amount of man power in our army comparatively to the US but we do have one of the best trained air forces in the world and Iran should think twice before aiming any missiles at us unless they want to have a US/Canada coalition dropping some warheads on them.
- ordig, on 07/15/2008, -1/+3The US would love that!
- Quaterni0n, on 07/15/2008, -0/+12Don't anger the sleeping moose. They may seem tame now, but you'll regret targetting Canada when you get a slapshot to the head from a polar bear riding canadian with a hockey stick.
- ArchiTech, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Ummm... are you from Alberta?
- ArchiTech, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Hey everyone, don't listen to this fear sponge... he's Albertan.
- trollick, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Hmm... But in a universe where claims like that would make any sense, wouldn't Iran be too busy fighting some sort of space invaders or a godzilla-like monster?
- RedSaber, on 07/15/2008, -2/+6You really have to be fraking desperate when your only plan is to fire at the canadians!
Anyways, let's be honest, Iran is a god damn joke, get over it already! - Kanele, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6In this digg, canadian press takes example on american MSM to create fear

- McFaggot, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1As someone pointed out, that place was literally hell on earth when the Taliban was in charge, we're doing our role as peacekeepers. They need us there. I don't want war with Iran and didn't support Iraq either but we're not hurting innocent people at all. We're trying to help rebuild a country
- GhostyBoy, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Talked to a soldier last week. He said they don't want us there. Time to go home.

"Iran is now threatening to attack Switzerland because the Iranians Presidents Rolex broke during a Nuclear Weapon Test"
Demonize Iran to Canada, then Switzerland. What other neutral countries do the warmongers have to convince that Iran is bad? I am sure they can find an excuse... - Syphon8, on 07/15/2008, -2/+1DAMN SWEDES!
