- spacedog800, on 11/20/2008, -4/+78also... Iran does not have a bomb.
the following countries DO have nuclear weapons:
NORTH KOREA
CHINA
RUSSIA
INDIA
PAKISTAN
ISRAEL
RUSSIA
FRANCE
UK
and the USA - serif69, on 11/20/2008, -4/+77Don't worry. They'll just Photoshop some more.
- Damoclez, on 11/20/2008, -54/+115It's Bush's Fault!!
Why, if he hadn't been alive, the Iranians wouldn't have had to build a bomb.
What's that, they were working on it four years before Bush got into office? So? That was during Clinton's watch, and everyone KNOWS you don't blame Clinton for anything, if you want to keep your health and your life! It's Bush's Fault!!! - 13ohemian, on 11/20/2008, -26/+78Iran will never attack , all this is propaganda is spread by israel..
My personal belief , if Israel never took anyone's permission before it acquired nuclear weapons , why should Iran plus Israel is more liable to attack Palestinians...
so did we pakistani acquire them nobody stopped us , although there was high tension between us and India...its all about oil and israel..
they are never going to attack that's for sure! - Wosat, on 11/20/2008, -39/+90Obama will talk them out of it.
- Ahnteis, on 11/20/2008, -0/+48I vote we panic just on general principle.
- skyshock1, on 11/20/2008, -19/+56I'll be dugg down for this, but how many bombs does the USA have? And of all the countries in the world, which countries have actually detonated a Nuke on another country?
Oh that's right.... - sickb13, on 11/20/2008, -5/+421 bomb? If they even point that thing at Russia or the US Iran will be converted into the middle east's largest parking lot.
- nirvanix, on 11/20/2008, -8/+44You know, if you were Iranian and you knew the history of your own country, namely that the US/Britain installed the Shah of Iran as dictator, who then subsequently killed thousands of Iranians as we extracted their resources - well wouldn't you be worried that it could happen again?
My hope for Obama is that he would make it clear to them that he will not do that. - chompapotamus, on 11/20/2008, -4/+39some perspective: making the bomb is ezsauce now a days, it's the delivery.
- DefaultGen, on 11/20/2008, -7/+42Obama really can do anything I guess.
- ali3000bo, on 11/20/2008, -15/+46don't see a problem with Iran having a nuke to protect themselves and use it when necessary ... if Israel is allowed with a green card from the states to have it to "protect themselves' then why not Iran ...
- georgemason01, on 11/20/2008, -8/+37I don't know what's going on in Iran. It's hard to take some threats seriously after what happened with Iraq, but I'm not going to rule anything out. I do think that if Israel thinks Iran is a threat, they should deal with it. Alone. Americans don't want to get bogged down in another war if it's not for our defense. Israel took out Iraq nuclear facilities in the 80's, and if they see a threat, they should deal with it again. They have a capable military, not to mention their own nuclear arsenal.
If they fear reprisal from the American government, they shouldn't, because there is nothing they can or will do about it. I just resent Americans being fearmongered over something that may or may not be a threat to a nation on another continent, regardless of our relationship with them. - psdabfm, on 11/20/2008, -4/+31Israel has between 60 and 80 nuclear weapons, The people who argue that we must protect Israel from Iran are insane. If Israel felt like doing so, they could wipe half their "enemies" off the face of the earth.
- Naieve, on 11/20/2008, -3/+29If we are retards and are the only superpower, what does that make you?
- brstilson, on 11/20/2008, -3/+28and it would be nice if it would stay that way. Besides, doesn't Israel have nukes? Iran would need a deathwish if they nuked Israel. The retaliation would ruin them.
- BradOFarrell, on 11/20/2008, -4/+29When Obama's president the bees will come back.
- digitronix, on 11/20/2008, -12/+37Go figure, he's the Messiah. He's going to save the world.
- serif69, on 11/20/2008, -14/+37Just the end of Israel.
- pathouston22, on 11/20/2008, -6/+27...while walking on water.
- mythicflux, on 11/20/2008, -10/+31Right because Iran only began working on refining nuclear material as soon as Bush took office. I mean it's not as if there has been any history of questionable actions on Iran's part.
- jknevitt, on 11/20/2008, -0/+20They were Libyans.
- bduddy, on 11/20/2008, -0/+20That is worldwide agreed-upon consensus. All except Israel and N. Korea have signed treaties, and North Korea have said they have one.
- spacedog800, on 11/20/2008, -8/+28...and I probably have enough chemicals under my sink to make a car bomb! Whats your point?
still need to purify/enrich it more, still need to fashion it into a bomb (both of which the IAEA and UN are making sure they are not doing). Headline should read: "IRAN has enough uranium to provide clean/green energy to its country!"
if they attempt to mobilize a bomb (which is nonexistent at this time) there would be no more Iran. Hopefully Obama repeals this pre-emptive strike nonsense. - VaporTrail2112, on 11/20/2008, -10/+29Those bombs ended, oh I dunno, the biggest frickin conflict the planet's ever seen.
- wowsah156, on 11/20/2008, -11/+30Reasons for burying this:
Wheres the proof? how do we know? Is this the same intelligence people who said that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. This is just more propaganda from the professional liars at the CIA. The people are sick of war. Enough is enough. bury this crap please.
BURIED. - BobMysterioso, on 11/20/2008, -1/+20Do dogs really eat dogs regularly? Is that something that is even that common?
- LanceUppercut, on 11/20/2008, -1/+20We can carry like 240 475kt bombs in on submarine. One of those equals 32 Hiroshima sized bombs.
Yeah. - anonymiau, on 11/20/2008, -3/+21What I find interesting, is why a country with the biggest and most advanced military force on the planet, including over 6000 nuclear warheads and a global satellite system, is freaking out cause a tiny country on the other side of the planet perhaps will be able to make ONE LOUSY BOMB sometime in the future.
If one country has nukes, everyone should be allowed to have them. That's called "fair play". - manstein01, on 11/20/2008, -2/+20Oil is now below $50/barrel. The question is will they be able to continue and finish development before their economy collapses?
- jjason1985, on 11/20/2008, -1/+19Unofficially, Israel does too. But thats hush hush.
Unofficially, there are 150-200 nukes in Israeli hands... unofficially. - hadees, on 11/20/2008, -8/+26Iran could have gotten all of it's energy needs met by buying already enriched uranium from Russia. This uranium couldn't be used in a nuclear bomb and would have showed the international community that Iran was in fact only interested in civilian nuclear power plants. Instead they refused to stop their enrichment of uranium.
- swass, on 11/20/2008, -3/+21If they make one bomb, please, oh please let it be Showgirls 2.
- downthefed, on 11/20/2008, -10/+28But the 2,000 Israel has is no problem? Stop buying propaganda the military industrial complex puts out. Obama isn't going to do a thing, may as well get ready for endless war number two.
- wpi97, on 11/20/2008, -6/+23Ahm... The Iranians are Persians, not Arabs... And a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency is hardly propaganda... Should the New York Times not have covered this report to avoid "scaring" people?
- hadees, on 11/20/2008, -8/+25It isn't just an Israeli problem. Iran's nuclear program is scaring the ***** out of a lot of the Arab countries and they are scrambling to put together their own nuclear programs in response. Iran is essentially spurring a nuclear arms race in the Middle East which Israel's own nuclear program never did.
- LanceUppercut, on 11/20/2008, -5/+21It is ok. They would never use it.
We have a few submarines that have 24 of these on board:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Trident_C-4_mon ...
Each of these missles used to carry 12 475kt warheads, now treaties have whittled that down to 5 (of course we are complying...)
My tax dollars at work, can't really complain. - Hetman, on 11/20/2008, -5/+20I am not worried. Even if Iran was capable of making a nuclear weapon. Iran would be destroyed if they set of a nuclear weapon on a foreign country. It is really silly to think they would decide to destroy their entire country.
- acknotSW, on 11/20/2008, -4/+19followed quickly by the end of iran and maybe the world if the chinese or russians get offended by the new glass parking lot where iran used to be.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -10/+25Umm yeah, who the ***** cares. It's not like they can deliver one here. Oh and Israel? ***** them.
- anonymiau, on 11/20/2008, -11/+25Yes, and you know why Iran is run by ayathollas?
Because the US and Britain toppled their democratically elected president in 1953 and installed the ayatholla-friendly shah to ensure Iranian oil to British Petroleum. The operation is well known as Ajax.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammed_Mosaddeq
So according to you, this it how it plays out: the US installs ayatholla-rule in Iran. Then the US bombs Iran for having ayatholla-rule.
And Israel? I guess just pulling strings as usual... - terrrrrible, on 11/20/2008, -6/+20*sticks fingers in ears* la la la la la la la!
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+15I read another article about this. Why did the NYT leave this part out?
"First and foremost, Iran would have to further purify the fuel and turn it into a warhead design. The Times report says that this is "a technical advance that Western experts are unsure Iran has yet achieved."
One must not forget that the enriched uranium is low grade. For now, it can be used for nuclear power plants. However, it can be further refined into higher grade uranium. To do that, enrichment facilities at Natanz would have to go through major visible reconfigurations. For example, all the piping infrastructure will have to be redone. This would make it very difficult for Iran to hide from the IAEA inspectors."
Is it because it ruins the "Everybody Panic!!!" part of their article? - wiggles, on 11/20/2008, -7/+21And all the worlds problems can be solved by rainbows and pixie dust.
- acknotSW, on 11/20/2008, -0/+13Ok, I'm in. exactly 3 mins after I post this, I'll run around my office screaming "iran has the bomb, kill yourself now before it's too late." I expect you to do the same so I don't look like an idiot doing it alone.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+14Yes it is. It's a big old "you don't ***** with us" device. It can be a weapon, and the Iranians are more likely to use a nuke as a weapon in an unprovoked conflict than any current nuclear power.
- Naieve, on 11/20/2008, -6/+19You really have no clue that the point of enrichment for nuclear power is far lower than nuclear weapons do you?
You really have no clue the IAEA found samples of enriched uranium whose use can only be for weapons do you? - Number23, on 11/20/2008, -2/+15One measure of Japan's commitment to continuing the war until the bitter end is they wouldn't surrender after the FIRST bomb.
- Naieve, on 11/20/2008, -3/+16hadees is right.
The Sunni nations have already vowed to build nuclear weapons if Iran does.
Basically that means the entire Middle East is going nuclear in the next 25 or so years. - jjason1985, on 11/20/2008, -5/+17"How many times have we sponsored terrorist groups which blow up women and children in open markets?"
More times than other countries.
Pinochet, the Mujahadeen, Osama Bin Laden, the Contras in Nicaragua.... the list goes on. We kill Democratically elected leaders with our state death squad (the CIA).
I guess we threatened Japan that one time - then dropped two bombs. That was after a good old fashion fire bombing killing more people than the nukes did. -
