- south409, on 11/10/2009, -2/+53Who hikes through Iraq?
- danconia, on 11/10/2009, -1/+47Spies do...
- AveryDeDog, on 11/09/2009, -4/+50If these idiots are not spies, they deserve to be arrested for stupidity. If they are spies, they aren't very good at their job.
- Siskoraban, on 11/09/2009, -1/+45Send in Bill Clinton.
- Kungfumantis239, on 11/10/2009, -0/+32Thoughts and prayers to those men and their families.
Honestly people, QUIT GOING TO THE ***** MIDDLE EAST. - merton42, on 11/09/2009, -5/+35These guys are just like the ones that go surfing where Great Whites are feeding and then wonder why one of them got bit!! What other outcome did they expect. Now that Wingnut has them, he will use them as pawns to put pressure on the Good ole USA to get something he (the regime) wants. I feel bad for these guys and maybe something will be done diplomatically. But nobody held a gun on them and made them hike into Iran, come on!
- Telionis, on 11/10/2009, -0/+21Hillary was never the one with the open mouth... (sorry couldn't help it)
- Shadic, on 11/10/2009, -0/+21Troll Attempt: 8/10
- frcc, on 11/10/2009, -0/+21Who doesn't enjoy hiking in a war zone along the border of a country we overthrew in the early 1950's?
- bmw7777, on 11/10/2009, -2/+19With all the beautiful hiking spots in North America and Europe, they really had to go to Iran/Iraq??? Darwin Award to them if they get executed under order of those Iran loonies. You can't just walk into a crazy foreign country and expect them not to care.
I should drape a USA flag over me and fly to Seoul, and then take the road north to NK, I hear the hiking is beautiful in Pyongyang. /s
PS- But I hope they will work something out and release them. - rabidjester, on 11/10/2009, -0/+17Hey guys, I'm organizing a fun little rafting getaway in North Korea - who's in?
- whatthefu, on 11/10/2009, -0/+16Iran isn't a free country.
- audiophile214, on 11/10/2009, -0/+13So you hike in the mountains of a war-torn and deeply conflicted region and you don't expect something to go wrong?
- 4degrees, on 11/10/2009, -0/+12any good hiker would have a gps, and would know if they strayed into a country they were not supposed to be in. Especially in that area, you know damn well US and Iran aren't on the best of terms. You go wandering into their high country (where "things" are likely hidden) there is going to be some trouble.
- kroesler, on 11/10/2009, -0/+11They forgot to sew Canadian flags to their packs.
- Telionis, on 11/10/2009, -1/+10I very much hope that we can rescue these poor guys, but even I don't believe the hiking story. I have very little faith in humanity, especially our judgment, but even a human couldn't be that stupid. This seems only slightly less idiotic than playing Russian roulette with a semi-automatic.
Who the F_CK hikes along the Iranian boarder in Iraq? In fact, who hikes for fun in Iraq period?
Iraq is dangerous enough for our armed and trained servicemen. It isn't even safe for them in armored vehicles moving in heavily armed convoys, how could anyone conclude that it would be a good idea to go hiking, alone, unarmed and on foot through the worst part of it? Furthermore, how could anyone be dumb enough to get near the loosely defined boarders of Iran, a nation with a well established pattern of taking political hostages, which our relations have not been more strained in over two decades? - Telionis, on 11/10/2009, -2/+10>> "It's a free country"
Iran???
You did read the part about this whole incident happening in Iran right? It's not like they were hiking the Appalachian trail and got nabbed by the Iranians outside Roanoke, VA... - PlatnumPlatypus, on 11/10/2009, -1/+9This has to be a fake account.
"iran is a free country"
"I love hannah montana and french people." - InetRoadkill, on 11/10/2009, -0/+8Could be worse. They could be declared terrorists, tortured, stripped of legal status, and imprisoned for life without charge because they are now too dangerous to release. All in the name of national security of course.
- Lordy1952, on 11/10/2009, -1/+7sarcasm?
- avengingturnip, on 11/10/2009, -0/+6In the old days we would have sent Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sly Stallone to get them. Who do we send now that those guys are old? Maybe Johnny Depp? Vince Vaughn? I don't know.
- Lefts, on 11/10/2009, -1/+6Just legal kidnapping folks. Of course Iran doesn't actually think they are spies. But if their legal system declares them as such, they can detain them.
- Jaysunli, on 11/10/2009, -0/+5Thanks to HGH Sly is in better shape then he's ever been. Send him anyway!
- CeruleanRed, on 11/10/2009, -1/+5Are you for real? Or does your paycheck come from the islamic republic of iran?
- quirkopatra, on 11/10/2009, -3/+7It's Iran's fault. They are the ones who ran the "Hike Lovely Iran" ad campaign on TV here.
Note to hikers: Do not hike there. - Nyaasee, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4If anything they should be charged with failure to dance well.
Illegal border crossing in Iran = espionage charge with possible death penalty. can you imagine a rule like that here in America? that shows the stark difference between our two countries if nothing else.
Anyway I'm sick of that government's *****, and hope that our people over there get home safely. - patrickloggins, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4As much as I distrust my government, I trust their ability to spy.
- JStraum, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4Bill Bill, he's our man - if he can't get em, nobody can!
- sevenvt, on 11/10/2009, -2/+6Yeah, we are just 3 average american folk, just on a hike in northern Iraq at the height of danger for Americans abroad and oh... well we just accidentally wandered into Iran, yeah I'm not a spy...
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5 Good outcome
- tconnect80, on 11/10/2009, -2/+5Infuriating they'd be detained like this but as has been said, who the ***** thinks to hike anywhere in Iraq, let alone near the Iraq/Iran border?
On the other hand, I got a chuckle thinking that maybe this is how espionage will be conducted under the Obama administration (don't kill me, it's just a joke. After years of high tech, borderline illegal surveillance on American citizens, it's funny to think this would be how we'd do it against Iran :D ) - danconia, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3Just when you thought Iran-American relations couldn't get any better. If I were Iran I'd be a bit paranoid too considering history but statistically thinking it's highly doubtful these Americans were spies.
- danconia, on 11/10/2009, -4/+7And make sure Hillary doesn't open her mouth.
- TrevorPace, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Maybe it's just the US's new spy strategy "just accidentally walk across the border, screw getting a fake identity and passport." Seemed to work well in North Korea...wait no. No it didn't.
- scoottie, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3Hopefully they get home safe but what happened to common sense and personal responsibility? You would expect someone to say something like "I dont think we Americans should be this close to the Iranian border because Iranian troops might cross the border and make us political pawns."
- WiseGuy1020, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3.....and everything will work out if we just sit down in a circle, hold hands, and sing kumbaya together.
- superkendall, on 11/10/2009, -2/+5Now we care about Iran again after weeks of protestors being beaten and dying? Because some fools chose to hike right by the border?
- dusanmal, on 11/10/2009, -2/+5You are forgetting that these are Berkley people. Living in a netherworld where there are no borders and Iranians do not want to do us any harm, we are just mean to them...
- utopiannative, on 11/10/2009, -2/+5There is some beautiful terrain there. Zagros mountains are amazing.

if they weren't on the border between a war-zone and one of the world's most xenophobic nations, I'd love to spend some time climbing around them. - KungFooJesus, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3This is just a political game to get some iranian diplomats released from iraq. Nothing more to see here.
- Sabretou, on 11/10/2009, -1/+3Iraqi hikers.
- CrazedChemist, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2They are kids. They made stupid little videos of them dancing around in iraq. Their family knew they were there. Doesn't sound like a spy. Not to mention if they were spies we probably wouldn't hear about them going missing unless Iran made a statement.
- TrevorPace, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2You can sew our flag on your back all you want, but a real Canadian is always looking for the nearest donut shop that is the closest to Tim Hortons.
- ghostrc, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2People who spend 2 months living in a cave to record 10 seconds of footage
- PandaBearShenyu, on 11/10/2009, -1/+3The U.S. spied on iran out of the U.S. embassy after world war II and toppled their democratically elected leader and put in place the dictator Shah... so it's good to see that Iran isn't putting up with the ***** anymore.
- superkendall, on 11/10/2009, -2/+4Right, and we know they are going to do that because they were so stern when protestors were being beaten and killed.
- laking1221, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2They must first prove that what they had arrested is a spy.
- rcacc65, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2I read that the area that they were hiking out of, northern Iraq, is the Kurdish region and actually was/is a relatively stable area and hikers visited there alot. Idk how true that is but it might explain the reason they were there in the first place. Maybe.
- azerbaijan21, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1I am from south Azerbaijan that occupied by iran.they kill my nation in Tabriz and other south Azerbaijanian cities and no one in the world protest them about that.
- Kungfumantis239, on 11/10/2009, -1/+2Fact: Your chances of being abducted are raised enormous amounts by just being in the middle east.
Fact: Most of it is desert.
My conclusion: No need to go there. Don't care if you "felt" safe, it's an increased risk and it's inconsiderate to both yourself and your family. -
