- Sophistifunk, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Ken's white. The entire purpose of the doll would be for boys to buy it, and then push a wall made of Lego bricks over on top of her.

- WoollyMittens, on 04/29/2008, -5/+3Those exist. Just come to a swimming-pool or beach in the Netherlands near a ghetto.
- Pink05, on 04/29/2008, -8/+7Sooo let me get this straight... Barbie is forbidden because she corrupts the youth YET teaching their kids how to use machine guns/strapping bombs to your child's chest isn't...interesting.... ::cough::Hypocrites::cough::
- hipnerd, on 04/29/2008, -2/+5Don't really do that in Iran. That 's more Afghanistan and Iraq for the machine guns and the occupied territories for suicide bombers.

- bcpierce, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1Burkas aren't worn in Iran. Iran is the most progressive Muslim nation in the Middle East. Ironically, the burka is most often seen (and imposed on women) in countries that are considered U.S. allies like Afghanistan and Saudi Arabi.
- Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Try again: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080417/wl_mideast_af ... Quote: Women deemed inappropriately dressed are usually hauled to a moral detention centre to sign a written pledge not to repeat the offence and await family members to bring them more modest clothing. Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, every post-pubescent woman, regardless of her nationality and religion, has been required to observe the Islamic dress code in public in Iran.
- dkapuchino, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1The most progressive muslim community in the Middle east are the Israeli Arabs. Walking down the streets of Jaffa, you learn that some of the young arab women are actually pretty hot.

- Asianwaste, on 04/29/2008, -2/+4Because you can cater to your kid's snowboarding needs whenever right? Or is your kid patient enough to learn guitar and stay entertained by that?

- Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Inequity? Don't hate her because she's beautiful.
FTR, I won't buy my kid Barbies either. Not because of some idiotic feminist notion, but because they take away from the mothering desires in young girls and focus their attention on fashion above all else.

- hipnerd, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6I hate the government telling me what I can buy; but I love exercising my power as a consumer. I have a three-year-old daughter and right now my feelings about Barbie and Iran's aren't very far apart. There's a well-oiled Barbie/Disney/Bratz/etc. machine designed to turn my three-year-old into a shallow, boy-crazy, consumer.
I'm fighting it tooth and nail.- Envark, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2I saw "well-oiled Barbie" and got all hot under the collar.
But yeah, I fully respect (and appreciate) the right of consumers to make choices. - Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Bratz are creepy looking. Disney is over rated. Their junk is made in China, just like the generic toys.

- glaz, on 04/29/2008, -2/+11I really wonder what the process is to ban something in these countries. Is there really an office of lawyers somewhere drafting the first anti-Barbie legislation ? How is the law enforced ? Revolutionary Guard Anti-Toy Unit ? I bet they get respect from the front line.
- ElAssoWipo, on 04/29/2008, -5/+4Not really lawyers, but still lawyers.
It's a religious state. There's a constitution and legislation but the real law is Sharia (since the Islamic revolution). And they would enforce this simply by banning imports.
But there is an Islamic Guidance and Culture Ministry which I suppose would handle this ban.
http://ivl.8m.com/IRAN-STATE.htm#_Hlk415981827- cygnus2112, on 04/29/2008, -3/+2The nexus of all evil in the world is within the Iranian court system.
- makkaveli19, on 04/29/2008, -5/+2elasswipo, iran does NOT have sharia law. look it up and read up on it. there is some similarities but that's all. there is no way they can enforce this in iran. they've been trying to get rid of satellite dishes for ages, they finally gave up and now they look the other way at them. this will probably be like reverse psychology for the iranian parents.
- ElAssoWipo, on 04/29/2008, -2/+4Yeah right, they don't officialy have Sharia, they just modelled everything according to Sharia.
That's a huge difference. Instead of beating women for getting raped because of Sharia, they beat women for getting raped because of regular laws.
And when they stone you to death, it's because of the constitution.
- ElAssoWipo, on 04/29/2008, -2/+4Yeah right, they don't officialy have Sharia, they just modelled everything according to Sharia.
- WoollyMittens, on 04/29/2008, -3/+5The moral-police will beat the crap out of you if they see you with a barbie. That's how things work over there.

- DaDrake, on 04/29/2008, -13/+4Well lets be honest.... Barbie is even controversial in the USA. But then again, without Barbie.... we will send a message to young girls that its better to be healthy than pretty .... and gosh..... nobody likes a fat chick (when I say fat... I mean greater than 105 pounds).
- ElAssoWipo, on 04/29/2008, -5/+6Barbie doesn't promote anything bad other than materialism, it just makes fat chicks feel bad about themselves. That's why it's controversial.
- Jan33, on 04/29/2008, -1/+3I dunno about that - Barbie does look mad slutty sometimes.
- zombies187, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1A real life Barbie would be a freakish shape. It promotes an unrealistic body image.
- ElAssoWipo, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1Unrealistic if you're a fat chick.
- Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Yep.
Wiki says: A standard Barbie doll is 11.5 inches tall, giving a height of 5 feet 9 inches at 1/6 scale. Barbie's vital statistics have been estimated at 36 inches (chest), 18 inches (waist) and 33 inches (hips). According to research by the University Central Hospital in Helsinki, Finland, she would lack the 17 to 22 percent body fat required for a woman to menstruate.- ElAssoWipo, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Sounds like my wife.

And before some lilly-livered apologist says "but FGM isn't an Islamic practice", this infidel knows that Muhammad, when asked about FGM, simply said to "not cut too deeply".- xxTazxx, on 04/29/2008, -9/+3And you have reliable sources for this?
Its all well and good talking, but show me some proof that hasn't been picked out from some crazy-ass sect.- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -4/+8Rather than me spending my valuable time to educate the likes of you, why don't you try and learn for yourself. Start with the hadiths (the doings and saying of Muhammad) - this is the secondary basis for Islamic law.
- Delphium226, on 04/29/2008, -7/+18Methinks you're being disingenuous. The full quote is: -
"A woman used to perform circumcision in Medina [Madîna]. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to her: 'Do not cut severely as that is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband.'"–Sunan Abu Dawûd, Book 41, #5251.
The practice pre-dates islam and 'The Prophet' was advocating leniency in a pre-existing practice. It would have been preferable if 'The Prophet' had denounced the practice entirely, but that is another matter. The fact is, you misrepresented the facts by making it seem as if 'The Prophet' was the root of the practice.
I'm not Islamic and don't really care one way or another, but I am interested in the full story rather than your skewed take on it.- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -3/+12The fact is that Muhammad, the most perfect example of man ever to exist, backed up by Allah, the creator of and only power in the Universe, was unwilling to outlaw this pre-Islamic practice.
There were other pre-Islamic practices, such as worshipping idols, which Muhammad was able to outlaw entirely.
So, even though Muhammad was able to outlaw pre-Islamic practices, it would appear that he was unwilling to in the case of FGM. Ergo, Muhammad gave FGM his tacit approval. - DrWho520, on 04/29/2008, -1/+5You know, I think you both said the same thing, except you made it more PC and attacked him for not doing so. "...not cut too deeply..." and "Do not cut severely..." sound like very subtle differences in translation. Also in my society, if something is not forbidden by law, it is permissible to do such a thing. Is it not the same here? Because if it is the same, and FGM was not denied and not even frowned upon, then it is permissible.
- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Correctamundo.

- MarioWhereRu, on 04/29/2008, -10/+4How does a spoiled rich brat girl doll not damage the youth?
- mmmmmbiscuits, on 04/29/2008, -3/+4Inshallah, young girls should instead learn proper behavior by emulating the wife of the Prophet and start getting boinked at age 9.

- von8, on 04/29/2008, -2/+8Banning Barbie makes more sense. Biofuels are a load of BS....all they're doing is driving food prices up.

- von8, on 04/29/2008, -6/+10Iran is attempting to ban male haircuts that do not conform to their standards as well. While I'm not a fan of Barbie, this is typical of a communist government. They frown on individualism and should be allowed to cut their hair the way they like and play with Barbies if the want. It's like when the president of Iran said there are no gays in his country; that it was a phenomenon that was only in the western world. Gays aren't tolerated either in Iran and are either killed or haven't "come out" yet. They are missing a lot of freedoms.
- grunion, on 04/29/2008, -2/+13Now I'm not one to defend the Iranian government, but it's certainly not communist. Totalitarian? Yes. Theocratic? Absolutely! Tyrannical? Up for debate, but I'd say yes. Communist? With the whole "opiate of the masses" thing, classical Marxist communism doesn't fit in Persia.
They may be many wrong things, but they're not communists.

- ElectricSoup, on 04/29/2008, -7/+33The Iranians hanged a 16 year old girl for getting raped. It must be the girl's fault after all, mustn't it?
Google: iran + hanged + girl
Barbie's obviously "asking for it" dressed like that.
Fscking barbarians. Sorry for the language, but there's no other word for it. This is what happens when your "morality" is just about power and jealousy and not about "respect for persons".
Google: respect + persons + kant- source1984, on 04/29/2008, -13/+2also google america + killed + iraqi civilians
at least iran keeps its madness within its borders. America exports it.- KingWilson, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1I'm suprised your getting dugg down in a place like this
- ik999, on 04/29/2008, -6/+4not everything is as it appears
Iran's government is extremely corrupted
they have entire bureaucracies built on bribes
why do you think the 16 year old girl was executed?
the Islamic sharia does NOT prescribe execution for fornication
if you did some research, you would see that this girl was raped by the police
the execution conveniently covers up something which would have exposed the problem
don't blame the Iranians or Islam.
The people are victimized by the rampant corruption. how about helping them instead?- dynelol, on 04/29/2008, -1/+3Blowing them up is more fun and it produces pretty colors.
- Zain123, on 04/29/2008, -3/+2I'm really surprised this comment has this many diggs. Have you google'd what you told everyone to Google? If you did, you would have read that she (Nazanin Fatehi) was released in early 2007.

- Kyrgizion, on 04/29/2008, -1/+3I laffed when they said they were considering the ban to "prevent it from corrupting the youth".
Is that something like preventing a barrel of oil to spill in a river full of chlorine? - RyomaNagare, on 04/29/2008, -8/+4Not to agree with Iran, But barbie dolls should be banned what with the whole "whore nose-job collagen lips night makeup" look with the newer dolls, at least the older ones, were doctors lawyers and teachers, now you have a whole bunch of multiracial Paris Hilton's cloned aberrations.
- Anonchrist, on 04/29/2008, -2/+6Banning anything is a sacrifice of freedom. Has it occurred to anyone that we should not blame a designer for making an unrealistic looking doll, but rather the parents of children that do not teach / desensitize their children from social manipulation? These children are going to need to be capable of resisting peer pressure, sifting through propaganda, and making life altering decisions by the time they are in high school.
- RyomaNagare, on 04/29/2008, -4/+2I didn't mean to say banning anything is good, just that I can understand how this toys go against the values of a society like the Iranian, they have the same right as every country to define whats right for their population.
As for the barbie dolls, while you are absolutely right, I still think peer pressure is the result of the media imposing impossible standards. and since the parents can't do it, someone should, video-games and movies have been banned for much less, why should little girls toy any different?
this is just as bad as "overly violent" or "questionable" toys- rabidbob, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1All I know is that Porn Star Barbie would be banned before Enhanced Interrogation Barbie.

- SpookyDIGG, on 04/29/2008, -12/+4Its their country and if they want to ban that stuff then they can, to be perfectly honest toys like Barbie and a host of other toys all do have some corrupting nature, Barbie presents a stereotype that is unattainable by a normal human being. There are a lot worse things then banning toys, but in all seriousness it is something that our own governments should have thought about a bit. It is impossible for us to put our western standards on a country that is so different in culture and religion, we may not like it but we should respect their rights to govern the country they have how they want. When France banned anorexic models everyone praised it, whats the difference if you ban an anorexic toy?
- glaz, on 04/29/2008, -1/+7It's their country and they can ban it if they want ? That is a seriously ***** up thing to say. Iran does not belong to the extreme minority, those who wish simple freedoms (like giving barbies to their kids) do not have any say in this.
- fracktica, on 04/29/2008, -1/+9"Barbie presents a stereotype that is unattainable by a normal human being."
Deep down, I knew that becoming a Jedi was unattainable when I was 5, but that didn't stop me from putting a cloak on and attacking the dog with a paper lightsaber.- Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Was going to digg you down, until I saw the word "paper."
- mmmmmbiscuits, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6Huzzah for freakishly stupid moral relativism!
- dynelol, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5Yeah lets respects others regardless of ANYTHING they say or do if they differ from us at all! You're just a stupid person that's afraid to step on toes. Unless, of course, those toes are just like yours. Quit sitting on the fence because you're afraid you'll look like a bigot. People that are accepting of EVERYTHING most likely can't think.
- yonoz, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4"There are a lot worse things then banning toys, but in all seriousness it is something that our own governments should have thought about a bit."
I wonder, what sort of comments you'd make if the US government thought about banning "corrupting" toys.
- tk0680, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6Same as any other country: ban/persecute the easy stuff, because it's easier than addressing the real problems.
- gavincato, on 04/29/2008, -3/+13Iran should put up a brick wall around the country and wind their clocks back a few hundred years.
They'd be happier then.- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -2/+9No they wouldn't, because since the goal of Islam is to conquer the world, they wouldn't be able to do that if they were sat behind a wall.
- Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1It's working for China.
- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -2/+9No they wouldn't, because since the goal of Islam is to conquer the world, they wouldn't be able to do that if they were sat behind a wall.
- xxTazxx, on 04/29/2008, -8/+5I lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, when I was little, and I remember that at my school there was this sheet of paper being photocopied and distributed. It contains the names of the Poke'mon, as well as the "Israeli conspiracy" definitions for them. Ok, while I believe that what Israel is doing is disgusting, I can use logic to figure out that say Charmander would come from a combination of Char (coal) and Salamander. Most people did not believe my logic (mostly kids), although there were a few teachers that thought this whole thing was stupid beyond belief. In this case, while I personally don't think barbie dolls/bratz aren't great role models for little girls (and boys even), they should have the right to buy them.
You have to remember though (if you are a parent), your child is in a vulnerable state, and since the brain is so malleable at that age that things that get accepted then (e.g. being perfect, rich and overly sexual is the best thing to be in life) these ideals will often follow them to adulthood. Of course this is a generalisation, but a sadly common one. Its up to the parents to teach their kids that there are more important things in life than heavy makeup and rich boyfriends.- glaz, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5It's a good judgment of your character that you could reject propaganda at such a young age, congratulations. On the other hand I have to disagree, I played with army men and toy guns for the entirety of my childhood and neither interest me in the slightest now.
- xxTazxx, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1Thank you! But I did say that it was a generalisation, and that in general, a doll that seems to epitomize the "perfect" girl/woman cannot be in any way a good thing.
- MattInChicago, on 04/29/2008, -2/+13You people are either taking this as a joke or seriously need some help. Sure laugh about it, being "Barbie" and all but this country and this religion are about intolerance and the stripping of any personal or civil rights. You make a jokes about a burka, how about a suicide bomber vest? This whacko regime is trying to get the bomb people! This isn't Iraq these people mean business.
- Jan33, on 04/29/2008, -1/+0Sure - but don't you think they understand the term "Mutual Assured Destruction" ?
- serif69, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Sure they do, and they're counting on it. If everyone dies, they get to go to heaven with virgins, but we're damned infidels. They win.
- Zong, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1Yes their government is crazy..... so is ours
They want to bomb countries unprovoked.....so do we
Iran is basically America if the religious right had full control of the country. While that is a dangerous it's at least interesting to find out that they are smuggling our goods into their country. Hopefully they'll learn from it and try to take on our country's better qualities or they might become more violent it's 50/50 at this point.
- Jan33, on 04/29/2008, -1/+0Sure - but don't you think they understand the term "Mutual Assured Destruction" ?
- crimsondevil, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4as of now people of Iran would think it is cool and prestigious to buy Barbie for their child.believe me everything that's been banned by Islamic governments had same story
- momonami, on 04/29/2008, -3/+2barbie does damage youth look at everyone who wants to be barbie and be perfect as the media says.
- michael43, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4Oh for heavens sake, there are a lot worse examples out there than a "Barbie doll". It's a fricking DOLL, it's make of plastic, it's a TOY.
- mmmmmbiscuits, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2spoken like dumb ugly person
- MyFriendsSuck, on 04/29/2008, -3/+6Oh wait, not the Barbie. Enough is enough. Let' s make McCain the next president and bomb them to hell. Or... just take care of your lost liberties, wiretapping and torture practices in the US instead of caring what Iran is doing with toys.
- dswinscoe, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1how about ... we take care of our lost liberties, wiretapping and torture practices in the US, and still laugh about fundamentalist theocracies, and their inane attempts to subdue the will of the people.
- callmeTroy, on 04/29/2008, -4/+1of course its destructive! its in the form of a stupid blond prostitute! and makes girl children think, "mummy i wanna be like barbie" rich, slutty, sexy, and oblivious to the world!
- Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1It's amazing how many men on this board think Barbie is an immoral doll. Barbie careers include vets, Pediatricians, teachers, nurses, astronauts, CEOs, etc.
- grassiness, on 04/29/2008, -7/+7Americans and Irakis... pure crazy.
One nation bans barbies, the other is putting beeps over strong words.
One nation is ruled by fanatic believers in allah, the other has a president that is a creationist
Both are known for political corruption, but one does it with wearing Turbans, the others come along in Gucci-Suits.
hehe, weirdos.- xtraa, on 04/29/2008, -5/+2Damn. I just snort my Coffee over the keyboard.
But frankly, you can say such things about nearly every nation. It's not just between USA and Irak. - JointVenture, on 04/29/2008, -3/+5Obama is a creationist, or supporter of ID depending on how you approach it.
- avaugha4, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3I don't care what he believes, he has stated his support for science and a scientific approach to educating.
BTW: Can you show me where you found out that he is a creationist, or did you just pull that out of you ass like everything else you say?- JointVenture, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1Where the ***** have you been? How about when we start with circumstantial evidence like when he says he prays to Jesus every day.
Or we could just read his book, better yet lets take a direct quote from the forum on faith he attended with Clinton. Ill give you just ONE quote from a question asked.
What would he tell his daughters if they asked if God created the world in six days?
“I’m trying to remember if we had this conversation,’’ Obama said. “What I said to them is that I believe that God created the universe and the six days in the Bible may not be days as we understand it. They may not be 24-hour days."
Okee Dokeee?- avaugha4, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Circumstantial evidence? And an answer to a question which most reasonable Christians (who accept evolution) have given to me in response to the same question? You have got to do better than that.
Can you cite any support for ID in schools? No because he is a supporter of legitimate science education, no matter his beliefs.

idiot.- avaugha4, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Maybe he meant Arrakis.
- boombye, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1The spice is life.

- ...---..., on 04/29/2008, -3/+1Burqa's for Barbie!
- michael43, on 04/29/2008, -0/+9I, for one, could not care less if Iran has the "barbie doll". Now I am concerned they might get a damn "nuclear bomb", but I guess that's not important enough to make the front page of digg.
- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7Even if the Iranians conducted their own nuke test in view of the world's cameras, it would not be enough proof for most Diggers that they had nukes.
- TheBanditKing, on 04/29/2008, -6/+2Why should the U.S have them and not them? I quite remember a certain presidential candidate recieve applause to the claim that she would "obliterate" Iran if she won the election
- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -2/+8Banditking, you are quite the intellectual.
Why should police be allowed to have guns but not the criminals? Why should sane people be allowed to operate dangerous machinery but the insane not? - dynelol, on 04/29/2008, -4/+3poidh, so we're the police and they're the criminals? Oh yeah. World Police and whatnot.
- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2dynelol, you are quite the thinker.
- akamurph, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2dynelol, Why did the US assume the role as world police? After WWII, did you know that? Do you even think about these things or just make blanket stupid statements like why can we have them and not them? Do you know why the US did this? Because when we left everyone else to themselves the whole friggin world broke out in war and hundreds of thousands of future diggers were killed.
- dynelol, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1actually all i wanted to do was make a Team America reference. lol
- poidh, on 04/29/2008, -2/+8Banditking, you are quite the intellectual.

- meeks82, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6More destructive than executing victims of rape?
- Azerael, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1I bet Jack Thompson would be more than happy to help them out.
- craighoxton, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4OK Iran, why don't you start importing poison lead toys from China instead?
- SnowCrashv5, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6can we send our ultra-feminists to Iran now to help out with the effort?
- Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1They might like it there. They hate Barbie, too, lol. I'm no fan of Barbie, won't buy one for my kid, but she's not the despicable toy they claim she is.
- DoctorGumbo, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3I don't think barbie, harry potter, or batman wants to go Iran anyway...
- Recoil, on 04/29/2008, -1/+3Heh... why stop with Iran? Don't they have a destructive effect on the whole world's youth, what with those disproportionate bodies and traditional ideals?
- Jashobeam5, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Traditional ideals? You'll have to explain that one. Barbie is sold as a modern woman. If you want traditional values, buy Holly Hobby or Strawberry Shortcake.
- jab9990, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3So, Iran is boycotting China. Right? I just want to understand this...
- ecshome, on 04/29/2008, -1/+7Yeah, we need to protect the Hounor Killing Islamic Culture....... Yeah!
- 1timeuser, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2That wide hip bitch had it coming.
- CraigReed, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3I didn't even realize they sold barbie in Iran.
- CuriousDan, on 04/29/2008, -3/+0Sadly, Iran's top prosecutor may be right, considering the image Barbie sells.
- hipRealtor, on 04/29/2008, -1/+7It's my understanding that Bratz dolls were invented by an Iranian man. Regardless, Barbie & Bratz are banned from my daughter's toybox.
- davharrington, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5Wasn't "corrupting the youth" the reason Socrates was sentenced to death?
- davharrington, on 04/29/2008, -1/+6After reading the comments I couldn't help but remember Iran was the country that isn't allowed executing young women for any crime if and only if she is a virgin. So for heinous crimes like "blasphemy" for example, guards are forced to RAPE the young virgin so it's legal to execute her.
Yeah Barbies might "hurt" young women in this country. - rdm13, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Sometimes, I can't tell the difference between real news and The Onion anymore. Not cuz The Onion is realistic, but because the world is so ridiculous.
- yellowcakewalk, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Now a Klaus Barbie doll would be really offensive.
