Injured Cameraman Helps Rescue Injured Marine From IED Blast

foxnews.com — A FOX News cameraman helped save the life of an injured Marine in Afghanistan - and was injured himself - when the armored Humvee convoy he was traveling in was struck by a roadside bomb Sunday night in the Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold. IMHO we need MORE journalists like this: know when to put the camera down and be a human!

        Did you think photographers should pull a red wagon behind them with enough food for everyone in a famine area? There is a chance he could've saved that starving child if he gave the child some food. However, his picture most likely saved MANY more children by creating an image that captured the situation, and thus probably led to more donations/support/aid for the area.

If that is not the photographer watching someone die, I don't know what is.

        He did not help that child in anyway shape or form. Instead he stayed behind his lens and watched that particular child dying before his very eyes. ( We are not talking ALL children in that famine area, just that one child ) Clearly the photographer himself could not handle the images that he captured or any guilt he felt as he later committed suicide.

The photographer's excuse for not intervening was that as a journalist, he's not supposed to get involved. You can find other articles about it on the web.

One camera man acts like a ***** human and we are amazed? Is it because we think soldiers should be doing this in the first place and this civilian was given a rare opportunity to help out? Maybe. I'm glad the cameraman did that, but what about all of the other stories about heroism?

      Also, It's easy to comment on the situation while in my armchair, in the A.C....

In the five years I've been in the Corps, I've never seen anything but Fox News on the TVs. The chow hall workers (civilians) get pretty pissed when you change the channel, too. Thirdly, I have a hard time believing that the military obeys Sodhexho or KBR or whoever's policy in their mess halls, seems like it would be vice versa.
      • jerger23, on 08/05/2008, -0/+8I think the bottom line of this discussion is that deployed viewers are at the mercy of what channels are available and what the person in charge of the specific facility decides they want to watch/show on TV. If he/she likes FOX, that's what's on TV.
        Having deployed twice, CNN and MSNBC were displayed far more frequently than FOX was on both of my deployments. To be honest, I never once saw FOX News while I was in Iraq, but I had a nearly daily dose of Keith Olberman.
        And by the way swrostmore, "in the rear" (referencing military locations) means not deployed.

TVs on military installations outside the US get either local channels or AFN. AFN shows a pretty good mix of news. In fact, the only real downside to AFN is that the commercials are replaced with horrible PSAs... even during the Superbowl.

        Secondly, I get the feeling people didn't read my earlier comment and just buried it because they saw you (mistakenly) agreed with me.

Neutrality of the press exists for a reason. Although it would be hard to argue that what this journalist did is wrong, journalists everywhere count on being perceived as neutral in a conflict to be able to report both sides as completely as possible. This ability has a immeasurable value to civilization, It is one of the mechanisms in place to prevent those in power from using war as controlled theater. I would argue that the access we have to information and to "the other point of view" through the modern press (i'm obviously not talking about Fox News and their ilk here) has done more to prevent war and slaughter than any brave individual journalist.
