- fadeout, on 10/10/2007, -8/+6I know foreign film may come off as too artsy fartsy for most but if you haven't seen Seventh Seal give it an honest change. The weird foreignness pays off with some truly dark comedy mixed with the serious content.

Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, an iconoclastic filmmaker widely regarded as one of the great masters of modern cinema, died Monday, local media reported. He was 89 years old. Ingmar Bergman became one of the towering figures of serious filmmaking. More…- geekchic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3To be fair, if you notice, I posted the story 8 hours 37 minutes ago (at time of writing) - which unless my maths is screwed up is nearly 2 hours BEFORE your cited "original" posting.

(Sorry to be picky, but wouldn't the post title be more exact as "IB looses his chess game" ?)- lavoie0ca, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1you can't loose a chess game. You can lose or win or play it.

- shadowspawn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1great. there went my netflix queue estimated dates.
- zeejay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Bergman was a genius, and his influence is widespread among the top filmmakers of our time (and before our time), like Kubrick and Francis Ford Coppola.
Bergman's films aren't for everyone - especially in today's ADD-oriented film landscape. They're often tense, dark, introspective, and often depressing, with stories centered wholly around relationships and inner psychological struggles of many kinds. No gunfights or car chases. But when you learn a little about film, and watch his movies with a critical eye, there's so much to see. The way he brings these kinds of stories to life is brilliant. His movies leave a lot open to interpretation, and make you think.
Bergman's cinematographer, Sven Nyqvist, is widely regarded as being one of the best ever to get behind a movie camera. If you ever go to film school, you will study his work in Bergman's films.
The Seventh Seal is awesome. As is Through a Glass Darkly, Winterlight, and Wild Strawberries.
Watching his films, you will also gain an appreciation for Swedish women. At least, I did. : ) - VeganG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I honestly had no idea he was still alive. Seventh Seal is great.
- SolipsismX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This guy was one of the best, if not THE best. Am I the only one interested in knowing how he dealt with it (assuming he saw it coming)? I only ask because so many of his films deal with the fear of death, but later on, he said he was all right with the idea.
- Zaetha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I just bought The Seventh Seal at 69 pesos on HEB here in Mexico this Friday, along with "El baisano Jalil" number 85 in the Top100 list of mexican movies of all time. It was late and I heard that The Seventh Seal was kind of heavy, so I was not in the mood for that kind of movie because I had to get up very early the morning because of my work and watched baisano instead, a comedy.
The next day, back from work instead of have some dinner I watched it. It was so deep and meaningful I couldn't stand it anymore. My eyes started to drop tears at the end, but I was not crying. It was more like a relief or acceptance. Like being in the best vacation you ever had, and realizing that tomorrow will definitely end. - reverb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dugg for the headline
