Digg Townhall Tonight!
Tune into the live Digg townhall tonight at 5:00pm PST/8:00pm EST.
Information will be free: Wikileaks still up, despite order
arstechnica.com — After unflattering and apparently internal documents from the Swiss banker Julius Baer appeared on Wikileaks, the bank filed a federal lawsuit in the US. A judge has now ordered Wikileaks.org scrubbed from the DNS system, but it's hard to eradicate a website.

- thomoore, on 02/20/2008, -5/+48This is an example of JUST the sort of tyranny the web threatens so much. http://www.scragged.com/articles/disrupting-tyrant ... explains WHY so many tyrants are reluctant to buy thE OLPC for their school children. What would happen if millions of school kids had cameras with laptops and started taking pictures of what their governments were doing? WOW!
- kipmartin, on 02/20/2008, -8/+3millions of kids DO have cameras (cell phones) and computers (at home) and i havent seen a picture showing 'what our government is doing' from one of these school kids yet. have you SEEN YouTube?
- MtheoryX, on 02/20/2008, -0/+16Um, yeah, actually. I saw a dick cop picking on a 14 year old skateboarder. Had it not been for the video, he would be off the hook.
Is that enough of an example?- Kurlumbenus, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1And has it stopped this kind of thing from happening?
- kipmartin, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1no, its not enough of an example.
a 'dick cop' and the federal government are two very different things. secondly, i havent seen any statistics showing the internet having an effect on crime. just cuz you say you saw a bad cop on YouTube doesnt affect my contention that OLPC is any threat to some supposed fascist propensities in this country. i seriously doubt OLPC is causing fear among the powers that be. remember, Newt Gingerich is one of the people who came up with the OLPC movement.
you sound like a dick kid, btw.- nicholai, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Did you even read the article?
- yeti22, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2To kjpMartin: You do understand thomoore was talking about real tyrants in *other countries* right? As in, the countries that are the targets of the OLPC movement?

- gabeh73, on 02/20/2008, -6/+29They will keep trying, but we have to teach them a lesson. I never heard of wikileaks before this week. We need this info to spread as quickly as possible. teach them that when they try to censor important info we will only spread it further and strenghten our duplicity. What they should have done was just call wikileaks a "conspiracy" website....ya JFK assasination, didn't happen, WTC 7 never heard of it, USS Liberty, it was an accident, Larry Mcdonald...conspiracy nut who had a tragic accident.
- yohnstoppable, on 02/20/2008, -1/+135Anyone else discover this site purely based off the attempt to shut it down? These stupid attempts at censorship always blow up in someone's face.

- VSLOATHE, on 02/20/2008, -2/+4Swiss bank secrecy is an important thing. Swiss bankers are forbidden by Swiss law from revealing any information whatsoever about who has accounts there, which is a good thing. The PATRIOT act and others like it are trying to force Swiss banks to reveal information that they should not have to, I would think Digg would be against that. Sort of ironic I suppose. This article is framed a certain way to make you sympathize with the site wikileaks, but we don't want to set a bad precedent here. I have accounts in Swiss banks and I don't want any government to be able to pry into my personal details on its whim.
- Kisama, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6While I agree with your statement, we must look and see this isn't about prying. This is about information that has already leaked and someone is trying to suppress it. That's a scary precedent too.
- silveravnt, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Personal and corporate private info falls into the nunya category.
It was previously reported on dig that the Clintons have millions in the Caymans hiding from the IRS. So some of the most powerful people in the US have a reason to suppress this information. Not sure what side i'm on. Just think of how you would feel if your docs surfaced on wikileaks.- MiDri, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1I'd know to keep my mouth shut and trust different people then.

- halleyscomet, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1That depends on how you define "Harm." In this case, the "Harm" is a bank being revealed as willingly aiding tax evasion. You'll have a hard time arguing we should restrict the liberties of one group of people so another group can continue acting in a manner that breaks the law.

It's not too much of a stretch to see the administration try and shut down DIGG for same reason. And what's up with Dynadot??? What a bunch of wusses! By bowing to the judge's order, they just SET PRECEDENT! The judge had no authority to tell Dynadot what to do since they broke no crimes. - wuxia, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Extensive list of Wikileak sites:
