- BrainInAJar, on 10/11/2007, -16/+73Al-Jazeera is a half decent news network, the only reason why people don't like it is because it sounds middle eastern, and it's trendy to be racist these days
- Conwaysb0718, on 10/11/2007, -5/+59Bravo to her and to her husband for not dismissing her dreams of a better life. To realize whats out there and there are private charities willing to help you if you are willing to put in the hard work. I know of a couple million people in my country who should read a story like this and realize life isnt handed to you on a silver platter, but through hard work and perseverance you can make something of yourself and take your loved ones with you. You can do it regardless of your present station in life.

I hope you take a better approach at life with your children.
Child:"Daddy I made straight A's I'm going to Harvard"
You: " yea but your a girl, this world is full of sexism, you'll always be second rate"
Moral of the story: Don't be such a negative *****. - mlw4428, on 10/11/2007, -2/+47She's his wife, stupid, of course he wants to tap it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+47Glad to see even in countries where class and even gender have extremely decided factors against you that hard work and perseverance can overcome.
- ae92, on 10/11/2007, -5/+47@BrainInAJar is right... Al Jazeera is mainly staffed by former BBC people and probably one of the most balanced sources of international news around. Check out the top page -- there's even a story talking about the warm welcome Bush got in Albania on his one-day visit.
- reddevil3, on 10/11/2007, -3/+45I like how people dismiss anything on the far-right as "capitalistic" and anything on the far-left as "communist". There can be a balance you know....it's not like American society is completely free of socialist ideas.
- opensource101, on 10/11/2007, -11/+51I am digging this just because it is a great story.
- SniperGX1, on 10/11/2007, -4/+36"Or because they air videos of Americans getting their heads slowly sawn off with a sword....nah, its just blind racism..."
Are you implying we should look down on them for NOT censoring world events? It is unfortunate in America we do not see what really happens to people. If Americans were shown the realities of war and the world itself we would not be so quick to force our influence on other cultures. - dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30i applaud the husband for recognizing his wife was smarter than him
- str3ama, on 10/11/2007, -17/+46"The neighbours would say it is against our religion"
I love how people pretend to be so well versed in their own religion, ..lol if someone told me something like that ..I'd be like "show me where it says that"..but then again I'm happy to be atheist, my religion is capitalism! - ishwarchand, on 10/11/2007, -3/+31Guys, let me clear your misconceptions since I am a Hindu. There is no Indian caste system, there is only a a Hindu caste system which is based upon your birth. you cannot change it no matter how rich or poor you might be. Regular people dont really care about it that much now, and it is mainly because of vote bank politics that it is still a part of our society.
Now as someone said that there is caste system in Islam. Well get your facts clear, Sunni and Shia are two sects which are based upon the fact whether you believe that the someone from the family of Prophet Mohammad should become the Caliph (The highest person in Islam, kinda like the Pope) or whether the most deserving person should become the Caliph.
But the story is true that BOTH Hindu and Muslim girls are forced to quit studies in rural and poorer sections of the society at early ages based on the fact that they would be getting married and managing the households eventually and so why waste the money on them. Its very sad but true because I have seen this in the lives of my domestic helps.
This story is awesome and should prove to be a great help for girls who wish to study but are forced not to.
Hope this helps everyone - arenas46, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32No, as opposed to not digging it at all, idiot
- JrunkDunc, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31Uhhh am I the only one that agrees with his explanation of their caste system. You people are taking his comment as sexist and ignorant, instead of understanding that is how their caste systems works, it isn't an insult, its an unfortunate truth
- BrainInAJar, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25No, Al-Jazeera isn't a "mouthpiece for terrorists" or anything of the sort.
When the unibomber sent out his manifesto, he sent it to CNN (and they publish it, by the way. You can read the full text at cnn's website)... CNN isn't a mouthpiece for domestic terrorists, they're just a big respected news station. Same as AJ - Conwaysb0718, on 10/11/2007, -12/+33Moral of the story: Never try.
- Conwaysb0718, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23Yes. its too bad that they dont focus on the negative in life one hundred percent of the time.
/sarcasm - reddevil3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Yeah....covering the head is only mandatory in Saudia Arabia and Iran.
But! Ignorance is bliss...so continue. - aamir2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17@funkmachine
"Which would explain why women get acid thrown in their faces for not covering up in India, Kashmir, Pakistan, Algeria, Afghanistan, Morocco and others."
Your statement is analogous to an ignorant foreigner hearing about a road rage shooting somewhere in the US and coming to a conclusion that everyone in America shoots at one another on the freeways. - bluechips23, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Brilliant story! My parents always told me that a good education when combined with humbleness and humility is a very powerful tool makes many impossible goals possible.
- Archimboldo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13@ae92: "Why is it people from an impoverished country have a better pre-university education than your average American, and more drive and determination in college to get top marks?"
Probably because life is too comfortable here. That's the story of civilization. The "barbarians", in the original Greek meaning of the word meaning foreigners, are more rigidly disciplined and eventually storm the citadels of the effete, decadent people living in privilege. That's the rise and fall of civilization.
What is remarkable, though, is that India has survived longer than any other nation - longer than Egypt; longer than Rome; and it looks to be set for a return to its days of wealth in past centuries.
But leaving that aside, the story is timelessly inspiring. Good for her husband, who loved her enough to sacrifice his meager earnings for her - and their - future. I hope they do well and also keep their values. - Tarnum, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14$600/month in India is like $600/hour in the States.
- skyshock1, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20Apparently those digging JerryParid down aren't familiar at all with the Indian caste system. Sure it's great to try and better yourself and be naive and idealistic, but the culture in India is such that none of that will make a damn bit of difference as far as their society is concerned. That's a big reason why so many Indians immigrate. Even amongst Indian populations in the states there are remnants of the caste system.
Several of my good friends are 2nd generation Indian, and I've seen all this first hand. It's very real and Jerryparid's description is spot-on whether you want to believe it or not. - reddevil3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14How dare they cover stories from a different country!!!
- duniyadnd, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18@1021: You're unhappy that they reported about a Muslim couple rather than a Hindu couple? That doesn't make any sense...
- Brad324, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I like the last line...
"She will have to move away from the slums to another city for her new job.
....
Salary will move with her." - ccL1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12For people making fun of the $600 per month, I hope you do realize that the standard of living there is a lot less expensive than here. Think before you comment, and look at the relative values instead of the absolute.
- ConservoHippie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Always great to see someone getting dugg down because of others' ignorance.
- shakdang, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Only people who have actually witnessed India and its poor population can truly appreciate the achievements of this woman.
Educating women is almost a taboo amongst the poorer areas of India (a.k.a slums, I prefer not to mentions them as such) the cast system is widely practiced and you really need guts of the 'highest order' to do what this lady has done under her circumstances.
Not all students get a chance to study at a university because their finances wouldn't allow them, many would not study at university because they don't have any one else to earn bread and feed the family/siblings/parents so they would end up taking petty jobs that would slowly eat away their youth and creativity many to-be-scholars would end up working in streets mending shoes or selling vegetables, I am from Pakistan, not very different from India, and believe me this lady deserves a salute. - ishwarchand, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13@zackz
You are an *****. I am an Indian(Hindu) and some of my best friends are Pakistanis. No we dont hate muslims . A fact for you. There are more Muslims in India then there are in Pakistan. So being tolerant is not even in question, they are a part of my society as much as I am. It is just religious fanatics who try to fan this Hindu-Muslim hatred fire. And oh yeah, ask any sane Muslim (there are many) in India and he/she will agree to what I have just said.
Damn I replied to the wrong thread it seems. This guys Zackz is a lil down - ae92, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13No kidding... and Americans can't blame anyone but themselves. Why is it people from an impoverished country have a better pre-university education than your average American, and more drive and determination in college to get top marks?
- Iconwolf, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13"Objective story selections are needed from Al Jazeera before I can take them seriously as a news source."
Errr, if objective story selection were a requirement to be taken seriously, 90% of the American news agencies would be disqualified as well. OK, they have a bias, but it's really not all that different than the bias I see on a Fox News or a Bill O'Riley, or on a Daily Show or a Crooks & Liars. If I discounted every agency with a bias I'd have to stop getting news altogether. The problem is most people stick to sources from just one particular bias, instead of from a wide range of sources so that the bias tends to weeds themselves out.
The best lies are often the ones that contain the most truth in them. - aukxsona, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13zackz
Your a racist dick that needs to go the ***** OFF the internet. Your also an unintellectual pig. You comments lack substance, facts, or relevancy to the story at hand. You detract from the beauty of the story, the integrity of digg, and the conversations intellectual level.
Now ***** off you wanker. - pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11to those digging down jerry. the indian caste system is still in effect, especially among the poor and uneducated. many on the lowest rung converted to islam or christianity to escape the system. this is partly why there was a huge communist movement in south india, which is now the most literate region. however, many hindus don't view muslims and christians as outside of the caste system, but below it. your last name is an indicator of which class your belong to. it's not as rigid as it used to be though. india has recently started affirmative action type programs to assist those on the bottom. but it will take generations to even make a dent in thousands year old tradition.
- Nichiren, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16@mmockett
err... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_China
That comment casts serious doubt on your education.
Also, many of the citizens of mainland China will never have the kind of chance that the people in this article had such as the millions of mine workers that work for the government. That's kind of how Communism works so I have no idea how Capitalism can be worse than religion when this article itself speaks of how Capitalism got them out of poverty. - aamir2, on 10/11/2007, -10/+18@jerryparid, @JrunkDunc
They are muslims. There is no caste system in Islam. Many hindus of lower caste convert to Islam to escape the caste system. - 666dorado, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11obviously with a last name like 'Salary', she thought she was marrying into money...
- Nichiren, on 10/11/2007, -22/+30@trippinlikegod
Then go live in Communist China. - aukxsona, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Some have ;)
On a lighter note, I know how hard it is in America to do this. In India it must be DAMN hard. Congrats to husband for loving his wife and wife for working her tail off. - dash1185, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9@ Nichiren
There are many uses for the world communism. Utopical communism is something that has never been reached.
From Wikipedia : "Communism is an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, STATELESS social organization based on common ownership of the means of production. It can be considered a branch of the broader socialist movement. Communism as a political goal is generally a conjectured form of future social organization, although Marxists have described early forms of human social organization as 'primitive communism'".
China is technically socialist, like USSR (Union of socialist soviet republics) was.
Now what does this say about YOUR education ? - Storm9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Right, and who's to blame for that? India right?
Its the American companies that out source.
tsk...such a racist - pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10zackz: wow, are you saying whenever a group feels superior to another is caste system? so the slaves in america and blacks in south africa were just part of the caste system? the catholics in ireland and protestants in england were part of the caste system? you also seem to imply that the caste system is inherent in islam. the caste system is a hindu tradition. islam started out as an egalitarian religion that promoted multiculturalism. you are a first class idiot and an islamophobe.
- cbergstrom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@tarnum
No, it's not. $600 is an entry level and barely living wage in one of the bigger tech cities in India.
Unlike her husband though, she'll make more later, whereas he is pretty much doomed to $2 a day for the rest of his life. - wreckingcru, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8@ae92
No religion in our curriculum! And we all believe in evolution...
Oh, and some courses are mandatory - like calculus, science, etc. - ronaldinho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The guy got guts to admit that his wife is better than him and that she can lead to better lives for them both. Most men would never like to admit that their wives is smarter and more capable than them, even if the men themselves obviously can't do *****.
Dugg - Zippo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I have to congratulate her for beating the odds, getting an education, and getting a career with one of India's top IT companies... But why do I have a sinking feeling I'll be hearing her voice when I call a tech support line...
- aukxsona, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Believe it or not similar things happen in America amongst the very poor. In rural Pennsylvania, while much more comfortable a living spot, with access to more things, many girls are married off young. I was married off at 17 to a man I hardly knew all because of religion. I have since abandoned that religion, left that man...remarried, gone to college ..and left rural Pennsylvania behind. My family is unsure what to think and don't speak to me. However, they are letting my sister go to college, where as just two years ago they swore she would not ever go. So I feel I have made some sort of difference ...at least.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8zackz you dummy, aamir is right. the only time you will find that caste is an issue in islam is when the muslims are originally descended from hindus.
and what's happening in iraq is not a caste war, it's a sect war.
