I like how Daily Mail just sort of made up a description.- friday81, on 05/08/2008, -8/+1lighting from the eruption????? what planet do you came from that has electric volcanos????
it was a storm by the way (I'm chilean and this has been THE news for the last couple of days)- meburnette, on 05/08/2008, -1/+6You can have lightning without a storm. Just another typical digg douche pretending he knows something about everything.

- wuxia, on 05/08/2008, -8/+7Isnt it odd that not one pollution-belching factory in the whole world can create a lightening spectacle like this from their polluting smoke, but for some reason we never blame the volcano for the global warming.
- rowlodge, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3yeah, how much pollution is caused naturally, are we really the cause all the pollution ?

- GraveyBrains, on 05/08/2008, -2/+11Volcanoes Vs. Humans
Volcano: 130-230 million tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Humans: 27 *BILLION* tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Humans 1, volcanoes 0.- wuxia, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1The point is is that no factory's pollution is so great to travel around the world numerous times and causes the global temperature to drop 0.5 degrees as Mount Pinatubo did.
- kingofinternet, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2you do know there's more than one factory in the world yes?
- BossKey, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Yes, but still, one article did say that so far this volcano has emitted rather little in the way of actual pollutants, relative to both other documented volcanoes AND man-made sources.
Please don't be the sort of reactionary fundamentalist who believes more in something's surface appearance, rather than what it actually is in reality. It doesn't help. - Locke23, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Please don't be the sort of arrogant conservative that fails to see that what the humans have been doing in this world since the early 18th century are harmful to the environment, and rather focus on the idea that humans are a naturally brutal kind. Thus, continue to negate the idea that we have to seek new ways to function without the destructive means we are used to. It doesn't help.
- BossKey, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Yes, but still, one article did say that so far this volcano has emitted rather little in the way of actual pollutants, relative to both other documented volcanoes AND man-made sources.

- Locke23, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1paradox.. *head implodes*
- miken32, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1It's climate change
- hairydotus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1The ash from the volcano reflects the sun's rays back into space, causing the temperature of earth to drop, while CO2 allows the rays to enter earth and heat it up and does not allow the heat to escape like a greenhouse hence the term greenhouse gas. Volcanoes are the earth's way of cooling itself not only the core but the surface as well. Nature is amazing and it's time people start to realize that before it's too late
- Vapor17, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1WOOOHOOOO!!! GO HUMANS!!!, oh wait
Crap - jampirate, on 05/08/2008, -0/+0Source for that info?
- wuxia, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1The point is is that no factory's pollution is so great to travel around the world numerous times and causes the global temperature to drop 0.5 degrees as Mount Pinatubo did.
- jampirate, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2There a source to that claim?
- SuicideMouse, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1*Blames Volcano as though it wasn't the earth it's supposedly harming*
- Paradoxymoron, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Because the earth can compensate for the natural pollution caused by volcanoes, etc, it's the addition of artificial human-generated pollution that tips the scale and damages the climate.
- thelawenforcer, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3lots of this stuff is solid particles , so they will fall back down to earth over a relatively short period of time. Also, these solid particles in the atmosphere have a cooling effect on the planet, as more sunlight is blocked out. The problem with human activity is that we are largely spewing gases out and most importantly we are spewing greenhouse gases out, (not that this volcano wont have either, but most of the stuff is solid matter) which wont return back to the earth, at least not as directly. Volcanos have been demonstrated to be responsible for certain climate activity but the phenomena is not compatible with GW theory. It may help to bring down the temperature average though, thus skewing the true average temperature down.
- hairydotus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2We don't blame volcanoes because if they were the source of climate change it would be completely natural and part of earth's cycle, but the fact that humans have developed factories and machines that spew CO2 and other pollutants into the air is completely unnatural. Not to mention we are destroying the planets natural air regulators at an alarming rate (trees).
- dlite922, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1You know, I'm slowly hating how humans, the very product of nature, as calling their actions "unnatural"...
Evolution has come along way, its okay to call cars "natural" in my sense. Before gawking, think about it, if a bird "builds" a nest, isn't the nest natural since its a direct result of nature?
Why isn't cars, internet, factories, etc natural?
To me natural means "by nature", nature being earth and every matter that exists. super-natural is something created out-side the laws of this universe (ie superfan, spiderman) with no help or a by product of nature.
I think we need to change the definition.
As with GW, I think its nature killing itself, but hopefully it will catch up to itself and think about it and change course. Just like how a human being finds out smoking leads to cancer and quits smoking cigarettes.

I hate being expected to take some ones word for it when they say the human race is the cause of global warming- hairydotus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1There is a large amount of data that suggests we are the cause of global warming you just need to do you're research. WWF.org for starters. The problem with human activity is that it has become completely unnatural. the earth goes through whether cycles where the climate changes (ex. ice ages) but the current change in climate is not a natural occurence. We are spewing a rediculous amount of pollutants into the atmosphere, CO2 among many other gasses and we are destroying what regulates the air, Trees (an area of the Amazon the size of connecticut was destroyed for farming and cattle grazing last year, source Cnn's Planet in Peril). while trees only consume Carbon dioxide that is the largest contributor to global warming. The other problem with human activity is that We are destroying wildlife at an alarming rate. The rate of extinction on the planet is currently happening at 1000 times the natural rate do to climate change, poaching and illegal animal trade. We are losing anywhere between 18,000 and 30,000 species of animals every year. Sadly we have put this planet in a very poor state and it may be too late for a lot of areas and species.
- rowlodge, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1thats good that the trees are taking carbon monoxide out of the air, but i was asking about any studies on just how much one volcano spews out deadly poisons by natural causes.

- deviationer, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4damn, that place is *****.
- ElGigi, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Yes, indeed it is. Chaiten, the nearest town is just 10 km from the volcano and it was evacuated. Is feared that the people won't be able to back there anymore, so now it's a ghost town.
- lordewoks, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3Hmmm, melted by lava or fried by lightning. Why not both?
- robbymcdobby, on 05/08/2008, -4/+2OH NOES!
- ZulmericronX, on 05/08/2008, -0/+41No one made a Mordor joke yet?
- leerayIG88, on 05/08/2008, -1/+10*mordor jokes*
- DYNAMICENTRYYY, on 05/08/2008, -2/+0One does not simply polarize their way into Mordor.
- TimeLincoln, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Lol, cuz i described this to someone as looking like something from saurons tower
- manzoire, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4SMOKE MONSTER

- gnarbuckets, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Woops I should learn to aim.
- roosterjack, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3Those are really amazing photos. Nothing beats nature.
- hairydotus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1agreed
- alphex, on 05/08/2008, -0/+19seriously, wheres the stupidly high resolution versions of these?
- bluestargalaxy4, on 05/08/2008, -5/+2Well, you don't see that everyday. The sixth picture from the top looks Photoshopped. It just doesn't look natural. It looks more like a level from Crysis. The other pictures however look untouched.
- 1b2a, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6RL can't run Crysis.
- FozzDog, on 05/08/2008, -4/+1These are awesome, but how come the dailymail has hit the front page yet again.
- bluestargalaxy4, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Front page news doesn't have to be of great importance, it can be interesting, funny, shocking, etc. Some diggers just like this kind of stuff to pass the time by. If you're looking for news that is important, that's what the official news sites are for. Also, there's categories Digg provides to more fit your fancy. And as you can tell, Digg wasn't designed to support just one kind of news.
And by the way, this isn't your everyday run-of-the-mill news, a volcano erupted and has made that area inhabitable for people to live in.

- Kenzan, on 05/08/2008, -1/+6This isn't so much "Amazing" as it is tragic for all of the poor people who have now lost homes and livelihood.
So, yes, my friends in Chile don't really describe this as an "Amazing" event.- poploserdigg, on 05/08/2008, -3/+0according to brian, in addition to the numerous girls in the Niagra Falls area, you and he are currently riding the hobby horse.
- xDynaBlade, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Sure, the event is horrific, but the picture didn't destroy anything, now did it?
- Vapor17, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1that picture killed my parents you jerk
- utahnkid, on 05/08/2008, -2/+5Call me a jerk but I see this the same as I saw the people who lived under sea level in New Orleans. If you live next to a gigantic volcano that threatens your very livelihood when it goes off.. Isn't it time to move?
- jampirate, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Unfortunatly the poor often cannot simply up sticks and leave, it isn't as simple as that...
... So I guess I should call you a jerk then. ;-)- utahnkid, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Tell that to the pilgrims
- miken32, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Well it hasn't erupted in 9000 years, it's not like they moved next to an active volcano
- Namaha, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Apparently they did.
- jampirate, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Unfortunatly the poor often cannot simply up sticks and leave, it isn't as simple as that...
- TomJohn, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1That's amazing!
- fitix82, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3utahnkid:
You can't blame them, the volcano had been inactive during the last 9000 years!
Many cities in Chile are located near volcanoes, we are surrounded by the Andes :) - hairydotus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2This is an amazing event. Not in the sense that it is awesome that people's homes were destroyed. It is amazing in the sense that nature is beautiful and no matter how hard we try we will never be able to replicate the complexity and power of nature. No nuclear weapon could match the power of a volcano.
- zantos420, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6can someone post a link to some high res photos we don't have to pay for...?

- iqoverload, on 05/08/2008, -3/+1that is literally the coolest thing i've ever seen
- CokeBear, on 05/08/2008, -1/+9I swear, with all the political stuff that we've had on Digg, I read that as "Incredible Picture of Clinton volcano erupting..."
Might be only a few days more for that... ;) - DiggCommando, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4The images are Awesome in the fullest sense of the word. I have had the priviledge of visiting Chaiten AND Futaleufu twice on white water rafting expeditions and that region, in my memory, is still the most beautiful of any place I have been around the globe.
As an admirer of the power of nature I stand in awe but I am also saddened that so many of the friendly people I met down there are being affected negatively by this. Fortunately, I hear the winds have been blowing east and ash has not been falling heavily into the beautiful Futaleufu river (that happens to end in Chaiten, which is a fishing village on the coast, while Futaleufu is further inland).
The larger threat to the river and the natural beauty of the area are the mining companies that want to blow off mountaintops to get to the shiny metals underneath. - nemodot, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Ashes have landed on my city, and i live like 1000 km away form the volcano, in Argentina. There's an argentine city near Chaitén, Trevelin, wich has been almost buried by the ashes.
- h3lx, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Never seen anything like that ever ever and FSM willing I never will. That's gnarley as hell.
- DCGaymer, on 05/08/2008, -0/+12Wouldn't it be interesting if one day scientists discovered that Volcano's were actually thrusters making course adjustments to our orbital trajectory. /sci-fi idea
- utahnkid, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3And then my head blew up... Thats an amazingly cool theory
- Vapor17, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1wasn't there a small planet in the star wars EU that the remnant used to kidnap Jacen and Jania that had giant thrusters?
- DCGaymer, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I didn't read that one. :( Now I'll have to go find it.
- hairydotus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2ya that is a really interesting idea no matter how far fetched it is.
- DCGaymer, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I like fetching idea's.
- dogpigeoncow, on 05/08/2008, -5/+10Chile must have had many homosexuals to make god show such anger!
- Whatup, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I see the face of evil on those pics...
- DCGaymer, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1They peeved Pastor Hagee
- kahakauai, on 05/08/2008, -2/+12XENU IS BAK!
- medeshago, on 05/08/2008, -0/+9I'm from Chile and it's really ***** up. They have had to move the people that lives in the towns near the volcano and they predict that the land will be unusable for agricultural purposes for about 10 years. Also, the animals don't have anything to eat or drink due to the contamination that the ashes have produced. Pretty *****.
- wordglue, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1wait...so...do you have high res pics or what?
- goatworship, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1This is obviously George Bush's fault.
- protogenxl, on 05/08/2008, -2/+2There can be only ONE!
- bullhead2007, on 05/08/2008, -2/+2In other news the latest Mortal Kombat match in Chile comes to a conclusion as Raiden defeats Scorpion in a mighty display of power, A lightning storm so massive it causes the side of a mountain to explode into a volcano of magma and electric fireballs.
- cheese06, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2Darth Vader threw Emperor Palpatine in the volcano
- JusticeFriend, on 05/08/2008, -4/+3Obviously photoshopped, the reflections are all wrong.
- TomJohn, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1And the body's flying out of the window at a totally wrong angle!
- frostbyt, on 05/08/2008, -4/+2I am not impressed. It's a shame too cause I liked going to chillies.
- xDynaBlade, on 05/08/2008, -5/+1I see Zeus and Hades are having a disagreement.
