- euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+53I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that if it takes several months it might be a recovery operation instead of a rescue one.
- trghpy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+46What the hell, first they out number us in deaths from a bridge failure, and now this???
- nymphetamine, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Must be fun living in your own little world.
- asdfvidkeasfdl, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33It's kind of startling how the American media has hugged onto the story of the 6 miners in Utah while only briefly mentioning the 181 (!!!) in China.
- dynamitehacker, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22Ironically, that's one of the main reasons why you have so many problems in America at the moment.
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18So if a problem happens outside of the imaginary line around the country you live in, then it isn't important?
- satanatnmtedu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Why is it startling? It makes sense that things that happen in the US would have more coverage than things in China.
- chrozz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11if your in utah you've been hearing a lottt about mining lately. The scale difference while compared with media attention is appalling.
- mastaphoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Headline: Tsunami Kills Thousands in Southern Asia
Second paragraph: It has been reported that at least two Americans have been killed and one is missing.
really..... you know the FIRST thing i wanted to know was how many of my own people were killed, not what i can do to HELP, or anything silly like that... - MusicalGenius, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12I live in Utah, so every day it is on the news yes. But I usually don't pay attention to T.V. News anymore other than the Today show to follow what media portrays in politics so I understand how to approach people who believe the crap the media gives out. Moving on...
The today show mentioned the mine in Utah every day for the first couple weeks. I'm not sure now cause I haven't watched the last few days. What astonishes me is the fact that I don't even need to watch it to know that they won't shine a lot of light on China right now. It's pathetic that they can even get away with it really.
I don't care for Bob Murray, I think he believes what he wants, BUT I don't blame him because he has only had the mine for a year and it's been terrible for many years. I look at the whole industry to blame honestly. Businesses should be required to make mines such a safe place that CEO's would even let their children live in the mines. This way we could trust that they would be very advanced to which we have the technology for.
The families are being very rude though. To demand a rescue when more people are dying is so selfish. A loved ones loss is no excuse for telling someone else to sacrifice them self. People sympathize and think that anything goes nowadays. I wouldn't even blame someone for not wanting to go near the mine to begin with really. I would want it, but would blame someone who wouldn't want to. But then when more die to demand more effort; it's purely selfish.
I quote the article "Families of the miners, however, said other mines in the area had pulled their workers to the surface before the dike burst because of flooding fears.
“The news reports say it is a natural disaster because of the rain, but the accident is because of the mine management. Every year there is flooding,” said Ma Xiumei, who came with her sister to the mine headquarters for information about their missing brother."
BUSINESSES MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE! Our government and the Businesses of the U.S. are practically the same thing now. The U.S. is too lazy that they need their T.V. for 5 hours a day, yet when I ask people around me to name as many senators as they can and they only pop out 1 answer MAYBE 2. Every time they say "Sorry but I don't have time to study politics." Yet they watch endless T.V. and they never get out of their homes. Pathetic. - hbeierg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9China beats us in everything: Bridge collapses, Mine disasters, Bonus lead paint in toys
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9It's startling how how American Media has hugged onto the story of Paris Hilton while never mentioning the genocide of hundreds of thousands (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) in dafur.
- mikemil828, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Actually it's probably going to be more of a archaeological excavation than a recovery operation IMHO.
- doctorfungi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I don't know, just throwing this out there... but it just seems to me that a flooded mine wouldn't really be habitable for 10 minutes, let alone months.
- thefirstenemy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10***** yeah we have more important issues in America! ***** China! I want more Michael Vick analysis!
- cyclox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5note to self.... when thinking about a career change don't consider being a miner.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The real story isn't the 181 Miners that died in this one incident, the real story is:
"The coal industry is a particular challenge. Coal feeds most of China’s energy needs, and accidents kill an average of 13 miners a day."
In just their coal mining industry! Damn. - Godlesswanderer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I read about this a few days ago, they say that there is no chance that the miners have survived. So even if it only takes them until tomorrow, it's still going to be a recovery operation.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/6961027.stm - OakRidger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They were from the moment they went underground. China has a bad history of running some dangerous long wall mining operations.
- Sornos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Quite frankly, I hope they all died quickly in the cave in.
- thrallie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Why the ***** does it take governments so ***** long to mount a rescue plan?
- MusicalGenius, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Yes it makes sense, but it SHOULD be shocking. Letting yourself become immune to seeing terrible things is very dangerous and helps the cause of no one caring.
- CorpT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Less drugs. More school. Then you'll learn the difference between "there" and "they're". Then you wouldn't look like a jackass as often.
- OakRidger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They do it because it offers the only jobs in a lot of impoverished areas. They do it because the educational requirements are not very high, and because it's what daddy, and granddaddy, and great granddaddy did. They do it because the money isn't bad, compared to getting nothing. They do it because of the pride, because they're doing a job that not only other people don't want to do, but are afraid to do. I can't explain it any better than that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3i wouldn't go so far as to call it a rescue if it takes months...
- glitch47, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2China is not very forthcoming about mining accidents, but the Beijing Times estimated that more
than 7,000 miners were killed by cave-ins and blasts last year. By comparison, 43 miners died in the United States over the same period.
Just a little perspective... - WonderBoy55, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3buried for equating a meter to a yard >:(
- Malakin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't know anything about mines or diving, but I wonder if they can send in divers with extra diving gear to bring them out a few at a time? Crazy idea?
- cracell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't know anything about this situation. But scuba drivers can simply rescue people one by one. And if there's blockage, then under water drilling. Which is difficult but the only answer if you can't drain the water.
- ghinch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4actually i'm surprised this even got out. chinese government usually keeps stuff like this quiet. i wouldn't be surprised if barely anyone inside china knew this happened. all big businesses treat their employees pretty expendable in china. the one resource they have more of than anything is manpower, and the few at the top who employ the rest treat them as just that, a resource to be replaced when it's no longer useful, and nothing more.
- davecor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2A friend of mine from India once pointed out that brown people dying never makes the US headlines. He said that 20 years ago, and sadly I've seen it happen many times.
BBC news is usually more balanced in its coverage and followed the tragedies in Rwanda and Darfur AGES before the American press did. - MusicalGenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It is not I that should change. It is you. Lazy and impatient.
- WikiEasy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What's truly startling is that Chinese media isn't reporting this...
- bagelpirate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3No, this would justify the term irony.
- Smeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It really does though.
- mnick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The advice is always the same for any major disaster, donate to the Red Cross.
- mrminty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You could just move...
- parsap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's quite simple actually. In a capitalist society, businesses exist for the sole purpose to make money. Headlines about "the genocide of hundreds of thousands (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) in dafur" are less profitable than headlines about Paris Hilton.
- egthareal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Something doesn't seem right about this so called "Expert's" opinion , I bet someone could figure out an easier way to drain the water.
- MusicalGenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow, here is a hypocrite. Someone who is so fed up with themselves that they do not care what happens to others, only their own turf. So when we can work with other countries to progress to a Utopian society it is achieved faster and more effectively because we worked together. So if you want to claim that it does not matter that almost 200 people are dead JUST because they are not in your country then if you are in need of help in a crisis you should not ask for help from any other country.
If an Asteroid hit China and millions would die without food or clean water. Would you turn away because it is not your PRIORITY? News is not confined to each country. The more we think about ourselves, the more selfish we are. I personally believe that everyone will one day be held accountable for their crimes. And when someone does not care enough about others to offer his help when it would cost him little and help them so much; this creates a selfish and a very dangerous paradigm. You ought to change this lest you continue down a road from which you may end up never returning from. - Grumps, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If no one thought of this yet, we could send diver into the coal mines and bring the miners out. Thats the only to safe them.
- crackah, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5They are *****.
- DoTheFandango, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do you mean the media has overcovered or undercovered?
- Frnnkdlxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1mutlitask?
You mean multi-task? And where do you think that 2.3 trillion missing from the pentagon went? Into building America's infrastructure? no. It went to China's military and growing industrial base. Oh yeah, we're multitasking alright, our government is choking us with one hand and with the other masturbating China.*i know i know, bad analogy* but you people are so stupid, i won't bother to dress up my words. - psykiv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I see what you did there...
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Here's an opinion for you: Shove it!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I wasn't aware that yards and meters were interchangable.
- BillDoE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You people complaining about our US news coverage actually think the Chinese government would let CNN and MSNBC down in the mine with cameras or any where near it for that matter?
- Frnnkdlxx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm not being sarcastic, you idiot.
- MusicalGenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I care about other human beings even if I do not know them. The greatest in the world are those who help others.
If I have greatness and knowledge and power. The best way and most efficient way I can use it is to help others reach my own level of attainment. Then once this has happened I will have progressed further and for helping others they would most often have given you more understanding and greatness in that they are diverse and have much you can learn from. This is a ladder which can never end. If we are helping others to reach our level, it actually raises ourself to a higher plain while they would raise their own followers to a higher state which they are currently in also.
So when everyone helps each other reach a higher form of existence all this does is bring happiness and human progression in everything. Is there something wrong with this? No. When I see someone hurt in China, I do what I can to help. I am a member of multiple large organizations which help others EVERYWHERE in the world. This is very pleasing for me to see when I watch the aid reach people in need.
If every person on this planet forgot about them self for just one day and did what they could to help, poverty, health concerns, wars, all other plagues this Earth has would CEASE to exist. If you think about a world like this long enough. What could stop you from wanting to do anything you can to help bring it into existence?
Every action has an effect on another person. You might as well make them all good effects. If all you do is make bad effects on this world. Then you will forever be alone and without higher attainment and joy. -
