- DeathJux, on 10/09/2008, -1/+259Dugg for Boston.com's absolutely amazing, huge photographs, all on one page.
They are the archetype for photo-news. So good. - Phych, on 10/09/2008, -2/+112Even though we poke fun at Canada alot, I salute and hold the highest respect for those in pic 29.
- RSS14, on 10/09/2008, -0/+83Beautiful pictures!
PS. RIP fellow Canadian. - sqrt2, on 10/09/2008, -1/+48Some excellent photographs, very powerful. I especially liked the one of the German soldier reading and using a photo of his family as a bookmark.
- DiggerDave08, on 10/09/2008, -0/+46That poor wife and child. I can't imagine!!
- kolyana, on 10/09/2008, -1/+42#29: "Honor guard carry the casket of Sergeant Prescott Shipway to a hearse past his daughter Rowan Shipway, 4, and his wife Diana Dawn Kaczmar, at Canadian Forces Base Trenton September 10, 2008. Shipway, an infantryman with the Second Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, was killed on September 7 when his armoured vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Panjwayi District of Afghanistan."
This picture kills me - the sadness etched on the wife's face is heart-wrenching. - akawraith, on 10/09/2008, -3/+44dugg for blue ak 47's
- vandersarJr, on 10/09/2008, -0/+37Are these the "old" Europeans that we Americans took such an indignant tone towards for not supporting our wars?
- OneLess, on 10/08/2008, -9/+45I was going to name my next cat Sagan, but now that name has some competition- Ebola would be pretty bad-ass.
- Sornos, on 10/09/2008, -0/+32I've had both parents in Afghanistan. Luckily, none of them served combat time. It's different from what the news tells you. It's not a constant warzone where there are bullets and bombs at all times. That is not to say it is peaceful. There are rocket attacks weekly and some of the people you talk to in the morning aren't coming back in the evening. My father has served in multiple combat zones. It's changed him. My mother has only been to Afghanistan but it has changed her too. People often make light of the war as criticism on political leaders. Make no mistake, war is the worst thing you can ever do to a person. Don't say otherwise until you've seen its effects. No one comes back the same.
The second to last photo makes me choke up. - Extrix, on 10/08/2008, -2/+32Very cool. That would be quite the experience to ride on the back of an open helicopter. #6.
- fattehboi, on 10/09/2008, -1/+29beautiful photography
- specter19, on 10/09/2008, -2/+30That abandoned soviet tank was pretty neat. imagine finding a war relic like that in the middle of the mountains in Afghanistan.
- mikeruiz7, on 10/09/2008, -5/+33Haha, that's awesome--I have the same joystick they're using to pilot that UAV--and the thing's cheap as hell. I would have thought the military would have ***** mystery sticks that can shoot lightning or something, I don't know, especially when it's controlling an expensive piece of hardware.
- Beckwith, on 10/09/2008, -0/+22Sgt. Shipway is the 97th Canadian soldier to have died in Afghanistan.
- JoeB4ever, on 10/09/2008, -0/+17just like in COD
- Ravenjade, on 10/09/2008, -1/+17Nn, the last one hits a little too close to home.
(Although at least he hadn't died by friendly fire, like Costall.) - Kersh, on 10/09/2008, -1/+16Anyone else notice the Logitech gaming joystick pictured in #27?
- mistamoose, on 10/09/2008, -0/+14#29 is heart-wrenching. Rest in peace, soldier.
- stateful, on 10/09/2008, -3/+17Someone in #7 needs to XYZ PDQ.
- velocity92c, on 10/09/2008, -0/+13#29 literally brought tears to my eyes. That's probably the most heart wrenching picture I've ever seen. RIP.
- polalion, on 10/09/2008, -0/+13Curiosity killed the previous one.
- MrJohnSmith, on 10/09/2008, -2/+14Now, if you had just written that in the first place instead of a short, slightly vulgar phrase...
- darkwing81, on 10/09/2008, -3/+14if you read the history of the past 30 years in that country it would not be very surprising at all. Afghanistan was Russia's Vietnam.
- thelastwarrior, on 10/09/2008, -2/+13Man I feel really bad for that mother and daughter
- chadfaaborg, on 10/09/2008, -2/+12The various countries around the world involved in military actions in Afghanistan are our allies. They're not there as a "favor." Rather, they understand that stability in that region is favorable for all countries around the world.....not just the United States.
So, yeah....they DO have to do that.
Don't confuse Afghanistan w/ Iraq. - blkrabit, on 10/09/2008, -0/+10His little girl standing there just breaks my heart...
- bono4u, on 10/09/2008, -3/+13The concept of UN is far better, then a single country dictating the rest.
And as long you are in one of the countries belonging to the UN council(? don`t know for sure if thats the correct english translation) your leaders have a vote some even a veto right where the UN troops are going.
It's not a perfect system but closer to democracy then to dictatorship. - walrusryan, on 10/09/2008, -3/+13Ebola can haz cheeseburger.
- OneHigh, on 10/09/2008, -3/+12You can actually buy the joystick used in picture 27.

UAV's being flown by Logitech joysticks... pretty sweet. - powermonay, on 10/09/2008, -0/+9# 29 -It was sad to see his wife and little girl
- soulkitchen, on 10/09/2008, -2/+11I was looking at the female soldier wondering what she would look like naked holding that gun...you were looking at the children's crotches, hmm.
- digitronix, on 10/09/2008, -5/+13Okay, obviously people are digging this comment down. World government is a terrible idea, and the idea of Americans enlisting in an international peace-keeping corps ought to repulse everybody. You cannot promote peace with the barrel of a gun.
- Tzen, on 10/09/2008, -2/+10Afghanistan? Oil?
- Dobby156, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8oh im sry that the photographers doesnt know exactly what munitions cause that whole
- NuttyVirus, on 10/09/2008, -15/+23A beautiful country being torn apart. Sad indeed. Great pictures none the less.
- opiniastrous, on 10/09/2008, -6/+13#15
There is NO WAY a grenade blew that hole. 25mm cannons can't put holes through those walls. That hole was already there or it was created by a missile of some sort, possibly a Hellfire. - Eisen4, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7can i dig you twice for 'mystery sticks that shoot lightning'?
- maveric101, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7nope. military contracts things out. the contractor builds it as cheaply as possible while still fulfilling the function necessary. often this means using off-the-shelf commercial parts. then the contractor just slaps their label on it and gives it to the military.
- Volatile36, on 10/09/2008, -1/+8I dugg in part because of sweet G36k pr0n. The Germans do know how to make a rifle.
- 22magnum, on 10/09/2008, -1/+8These are some powerful photos especially the second to last one. brings a tear to your eye.
- Megalomatthew, on 10/09/2008, -1/+8#9 A cat named EBOLA?!
- inactive, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7Cool but look at those reviews...
- Tyrghast, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7Just out of curiosity, how quickly do you go through a standard house cat that you have the name for your next one already picked out?
- SeanCallan, on 10/09/2008, -1/+8Afghanistan has been war torn for MANY years before we ever got involved.
- MaverickSmooth, on 10/09/2008, -1/+7"Faux" News viewer?
- Alias1431, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6Praise be.
- Muler36, on 10/09/2008, -1/+7djoo shut the hell up man, not everything is about american patroism, despite what you might think.
respect the soldiers family you ignorant lowlife - flyingclutchman, on 10/09/2008, -1/+7That wall looks like it is made out of dirt
- Renster84, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6The feeling of knowing that little girl holding a rose will never know her daddy whilst growing up brought me to tears.
Words can not convey feelings over pictures and issues like this. -
