Immigrants No Longer See America as the Land of Prosperity
washingtonpost.com — The number of immigrants coming to the United States slowed substantially in 2007, with the nation's foreign-born population growing by only 511,000, compared with about a million a year since 2000, according to Census figures released today. In 14 states, the foreign-born population declined,...

- Hawker400, on 09/23/2008, -48/+50Wow, not only is the American Empire on the decline, but apparently so are its ideals. Sad news.
- Hetman, on 09/23/2008, -16/+3You are thinking of the word idea not ideal.
- poet, on 09/23/2008, -1/+3Need to take some elementary-school English class vocabulary lessons again?
- SpectralSounds, on 09/23/2008, -8/+27If America keeps declining at the rate it is now, it will be the other countries worried about immigrants from America.
- uppitydiggers, on 09/23/2008, -6/+1we've certainly got them to spare.
- Avolii, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1I've actually been considering leaving the States for a few months now.
- Hetman, on 09/23/2008, -6/+7That would be awesome. Canada is going to be pissed when their is an influx of non-french speaking american assholes running around. Of course unlike America they would probably just deport us or jail us.
- Rikkochet, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Unlike America, Canada is completely incapable of deporting or jailing anyone for anything.
The last time we deported someone successfully there were mass protests in the streets because the aggravated assaulting, drug running prick was going to be "abused" in his home country. - Hetman, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3That is not true. You just sent back an american deserter. I will look up the article for you. But I can gurantee you do deport people unless as you mentioned their country of orign will prosecute them for something that is legal in Canada.
- reaper527, on 09/23/2008, -1/+1as much as i find the humor the way it sounds when we are referred to as being canada's mexico, this will never happen. and as far as the non-french speaking aspect goes, aside from quebec isn't canada a primarily english speaking nation?
(and i agree with rikko) - Bith8654, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1@reaper527: Canada and French is similar to the US and Spanish, only they take it a little farther. I'll admit I've only spent a significant amount of time in the province of Ontario, but it's not uncommon to see signs in both English and French, or food wrappers with English and French descriptions back to back.
- Rikkochet, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Unlike America, Canada is completely incapable of deporting or jailing anyone for anything.

- mzx639, on 09/23/2008, -6/+2Haha, we will see about that, loser.
- whorunbartertwn, on 09/23/2008, -2/+7Interesting interpretation:
An additional 511,000 immigrants in 2007 = immigrants no longer see America as the land of opportunity.
Go offer 100 American visas up for grabs on a street corner in Mumbai or Xian, watch the stampede commence.- Nitesmoke, on 09/23/2008, -3/+6Stop implying that people want to come to the US. We at Digg bury anything that doesn't bash the US. By implying that we have more people trying to sneak in, risking even death to get here, would mean that it doesn't totally suck here, and we can't let that sentiment get out. USA sucks ass, no one wants in, wake up.
- quaxon, on 09/23/2008, -0/+7please, you can offer visa's to any developed country, America isnt the golden ticket.
- seraph582, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4Buried as ridiculously inaccurate tripe. Don't believe me? Check out the average homes/lifestyles in India, Mexico, or Eastern Europe. Compare them to what you know as America.

- piper999, on 09/23/2008, -6/+64Not all immigrants are illegal.
- pintomp3, on 09/23/2008, -8/+10a person is not illegal.
- santaliqueur, on 09/23/2008, -3/+3He didn't say they all were.
- piper999, on 09/23/2008, -1/+2I didn't say he did.
- harrisbradley, on 09/23/2008, -1/+8Correct, illegal immigrants are mainly dominated by the ones that don't pay taxes. (Also, I'm not a bigot. The only thing I have a problem with is how much we give away for free.)
- chase001, on 09/24/2008, -1/+3Crossing an imaginary line should not be illegal.
- FrostyTheDMan, on 09/23/2008, -3/+1No expense at all... we'll end up saving money for every illiterate gang banger that decides to stay in El Salvador and wreak havoc.
- writie, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1There is a side issue, as the numbers of foreign students attending US universities is also down - many due to restrictive visa regulations. This is pure benefit for the universities and business schools of Europe.
- piper999, on 09/23/2008, -6/+64Not all immigrants are illegal.
- Michaelabehsera, on 09/23/2008, -45/+18***** America it lost its freedom completly, sooooooooooo many regulation exist its hard to creat a company, go public etc.
Immigrants built this country if they dont like it any more then that will be one of the man reasons why I think th US will go down in the next 20 years.- piper999, on 09/23/2008, -6/+17A lot of this is caused by the fact that America has outsourced its service industries and research and development therefore wealth creation to other countries. There is no advantage to being in America when American money and jobs are easier to get hold of in other countries.
- mikedoth, on 09/23/2008, -7/+4Corporate greed, and the bottom line. Make it harder for companies to outsource (Ron Paul) and jobs will inherently come back.
- piper999, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Why are you being dugg down??
You are correct. The goverment has been effectively paying companies to outsource jobs for years. It's like a tax reduction bonus for every American they fire and it ***** disgusts me.
- IglooBurner, on 09/23/2008, -1/+1And there will be even more regulations to come in the future on loaning money and starting a business.
- mk3k, on 09/23/2008, -1/+10I'm 34 and the whole America will go down in flames now thing gets old.
Everyone has always talked about it but we are still prominent in the world if not liked by the world.- Sroek, on 09/23/2008, -5/+1Hate to break it to you, but America is already dead.
- santaliqueur, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Already dead? I'm scared, most 23 year olds from LA who are on Digg usually know their socio-economic *****. Probably learning all about it at the local junior college.
- Sroek, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1@santaliqeuer
socio-economic?
You mean socio-political?
- Dumbledorito, on 09/23/2008, -2/+4It's amazing how "there too much regulation" can still be a talking point when every indication is that it was a lack of regulation enforcement that led to this mess.
But yeah, let's make derivatives even MORE free-wheeling, and hey, why just have a loophole where traders can ***** with commodity futures on overseas markets: Let's let them drive the costs of everything through the roof right here. - starbuxadct, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1I find it hard to believe that you could have created a successful public company, no matter what the state of the US is.
- piper999, on 09/23/2008, -6/+17A lot of this is caused by the fact that America has outsourced its service industries and research and development therefore wealth creation to other countries. There is no advantage to being in America when American money and jobs are easier to get hold of in other countries.
- DrPaul2008, on 09/23/2008, -28/+21I'm glad that people are starting to realize this. It's damn sad what people give up trying to come here in search of liberty. The US is a lost cause.
- inhaler, on 09/23/2008, -4/+10I disagree. I've always imagined we were that beacon in the west where a nation could be born from an idea. Promoting opportunity, prosperity, and the liberty to pursue both. We've made some mistakes, but I don't think it's over.
The majority of the people in this country - our pulse beat alittle faster and alittle harder when we hear the preamble of the constitution or the declaration of independence. Even the engraving on Lady Liberty causes my heart to swell. We can get it back, we haven't lost it yet. It's just going to be a long row to hoe.- FreeStater, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Whether or not you think the rest of the nation has a chance of righting itself, the best chance for freedom is in New Hampshire, which, obviously, is in the United States.
www.freestateproject.com - DrPaul2008, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Nationalism is alive and well. Competence is not. We're a nation of willing slaves, and we have no understanding of what liberty is. If we had a separation of school & state, as well as a cataclysmic event, we might be able to salvage this country in the next 25-50 years. We certainly don't have the understanding, or the character, to be free people, and we won't be the generation to raise children that will grow up to be, either. More likely, we will start to oppress those trying to attain freedom in other nations of the world, in the name of national security. Ours is a sick, pathetic, society.
- DrPaul2008, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1FreeStater, you might be right. However, the type of people willing to actually uproot their lives, and move across the country in pursuit of something as unappreciated, and misunderstood, as freedom, are very rare. How will the rest of the nation look if the best of us move? NH might be able to defy the odds, but I would imagine the Live Free or Die state would cut the diseased nation loose, and secede...
With or without NH, the U.S. is *****.
- FreeStater, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Whether or not you think the rest of the nation has a chance of righting itself, the best chance for freedom is in New Hampshire, which, obviously, is in the United States.
- richnojutsu, on 09/23/2008, -1/+7The US is a lost cause? I'm sure the man whose name you bear would disagree with you.
- DrPaul2008, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1You're sure, eh?
I understand that no government lasts forever. I understand that we can't keep up the size of our government for much longer. What I am referring to is our ability as people to do something intentionally, to direct our future, rather then sit back and wait for it, whatever may come.
Ron Paul is right. Whether by choice, or necessity, the US government will shrink, if not end. He is trying desperately to reach us, and convince us to do the right thing. Ron Paul believes it's his duty to try to protect the Constitution, and restore to us our freedom, despite ourselves. I am sure he will spend the rest of his life trying to figure out how to save the nation, but I'd be willing to bet that after a life time of principled work, he doesn't have a whole lot of hope for us.
- DrPaul2008, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1You're sure, eh?
- AresDiggs, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2Why do people say the US is going down and its a good thing? no its not... like the guy above said we made some mistakes but we are a country that learns and changes for the better it just takes time...
- buryyourhead, on 09/23/2008, -3/+1I'm not sad at all. I've ***** had it with the amount of Bosnians coming into St. Louis.
- inhaler, on 09/23/2008, -4/+10I disagree. I've always imagined we were that beacon in the west where a nation could be born from an idea. Promoting opportunity, prosperity, and the liberty to pursue both. We've made some mistakes, but I don't think it's over.
- Kamelia28, on 09/23/2008, -39/+56Several years ago I'd love to move to America, but no longer, the author is right!.. America has changed, not to good..
- Betrayal, on 09/23/2008, -26/+11Love it as long as it works for you right?
On another note i'm happy if more puerto-ricans move back, cause some of them are really really annoying people. They wear puertorico shirts, flags and make a lot of noise with their music from puerrrrtoooriiiccooo but if they love pueeerrrrrrrtooorrrrriiiccccooo so much why don't they move back?- pizpot, on 09/23/2008, -5/+8would you move into Germany in 1940? (to exagerate)
- scottblystone, on 09/23/2008, -0/+10Puerto Rico is a US territory; likely will be the 51st state.
- SmartfulDodger, on 09/23/2008, -3/+13Hey Betrayal, ***** you.
- A tax-paying American-loving Puerto Rican - publiclurker, on 09/23/2008, -1/+5He probably would have loved to move to Germany in the 40's, and would fit right in.
- belebih, on 09/23/2008, -1/+5Considering Puerto Rico is part of the US, that's like telling a New Yorker living in Chicago to move back to New York if he loves it so much. We're all in the same country, and there's nothing wrong with being proud of where you come from.
- AresDiggs, on 09/23/2008, -11/+3Can you please get off the internet we invented and the site us Americans created... k thanks...
- rhodydog, on 09/23/2008, -3/+3Can you please get off the World Wide Web that was invented by the British.
- TheSexyGeek, on 09/23/2008, -1/+3Can you get off the ass that was created by. . . umm. . not you.
- sfacets, on 09/23/2008, -4/+7I like the country, too bad so many of it's people are so intolerant.
Any country that treats it's people the way the US does deserves to be shunned. - silentpl, on 09/23/2008, -5/+6That's right. I moved to the UK instead of trying to get to the US. Especially with their border checks and humiliating process of visa application in my country. Secondly it's not possible to work legally but one can easily have a bank account, phone, drivers license etc. Just not social security. Work, pay taxes but don't expect anything back.
The UK has opened up and enabled workers to come in. Same did France, Germany, Sweden, Iceland etc.
Sorry USA. It's time for you to get humble.- Nitesmoke, on 09/23/2008, -2/+5No problems from mass immigration in Europe to see here, move along!

I could go on and on with the links. Europe's immigration problems are worse than the US'. Why is it, any time a story lands on Digg about how the USA sucks somehow, Europeans like to remind us how awesome Europe is. They talk ***** about our economy, yet our unemployment is much lower. Oh well, I guess you don't need facts when you have an agenda to promote.
- Nitesmoke, on 09/23/2008, -2/+5No problems from mass immigration in Europe to see here, move along!
- itstodd, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1the door swings both ways you know.
- Betrayal, on 09/23/2008, -26/+11Love it as long as it works for you right?
- edstate, on 09/23/2008, -8/+60I think this is actually GOOD for other countries. No longer will their best and brightest flee their country for a "better life in America". The better all the countries of the world are, the better the world.
Of course, they won't get the "how to" education on those valuable nation-helping skillz that they would've w/ a few good years here :P- pell, on 09/23/2008, -2/+12That means the influx in immigrants to Canada will increase.
- unorginalityftw, on 09/23/2008, -2/+5Well it's not like we're low on room up here... just so long as it doesn't get really bad and polluted due to a massive population and I can no longer enjoy being able to go to a Provincial Park for some clean mountain air I'm good.
- Rikkochet, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4Head to Manitoba. It's really nice there. Really. So everyone go and settle there.
And those aren't bats, they're mosquitoes. - brownsound00, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Well, here in Canada there is alot of infrastructure for new people to come in, but I really think Canada has to look at Canadians first before they get all these people from different countries coming in and taking jobs. I mean, my grandpa came from India in the 70s. He had to deal with all the racism and learn english etc. and he got no help from anyone. He got his own job, and became a successful engineer. Now you have people that don't even speak english and make no effort to do so, and they get handed jobs (sometimes) with minimal work. Now I'm not against immigration... but we need to make sure they will benefit Canada.
- andydumi, on 09/23/2008, -0/+11Instead Europe and Australia will be even more flooded. People fleeing third world countries are going to flee somewhere...
- uppitydiggers, on 09/23/2008, -3/+1As long as it means they also get to keep their criminals too.
- casolorz, on 09/23/2008, -0/+10You are assuming immigrants are all the best and brightest. Obviously there are lots who are the best and brightest however they tend to come here legally because they can. Considering most immigrants are illegally in the country, then really consider the kind of people you are getting, at least one thing its known about them, they are willing to live as illegals and bend all the laws made to keep illegals out.
Before someone says I am anti immigration consider that I came to the US as an immigrant but worked my ass off to stay always legal and become a resident the legal way. It took 10 years.- edstate, on 09/23/2008, -0/+6That's a good point... honestly, and selfishly I think the US should be kindof picky w/ who we let in. We *should* wnat only the best and brightest. That way, our already strained social services would be for our citizens, and their families.
And good for you for coming in the front door, and welcome ;) - tech10171968, on 09/23/2008, -1/+5Exactly. Why shouldn't we be a little picky about who we let in? Everyone else in the world is, and that includes the very countries whose citizens are criticizing us.
- Nitesmoke, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5edstate "We *should* wnat only the best and brightest."

He came in legally and was able to do everything he wanted to do. I have an uncle who was a janitor (albeit immigrated with a foreign college degree) twenty years ago and now is a top hospital administrator. I hate to say this and maybe I'm biased because it's my own family, but if I were a country I'd take them over a poor gardner or housekeeper with an elementary school education any day. I do not fault America if they choose to be picky about who they let in. And yes I'm hispanic.
- edstate, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Nitesmoke...
I agree w/ you... but I'm speaking purely from a financial place. Our social services are worn down, and severely ***** up. So much so that it's rotting our country form the inside-out. And I often wonder if a bit of a "time out" for those listed on the Statue Of Liberty might be the breath we need to get our house in order...
And yeah, it sucks.
- edstate, on 09/23/2008, -0/+6That's a good point... honestly, and selfishly I think the US should be kindof picky w/ who we let in. We *should* wnat only the best and brightest. That way, our already strained social services would be for our citizens, and their families.
- StevesJobs, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Which lines up with the basic principles of socialism. Something that nobody would have expected to come out of the bush administration.
- edstate, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1No... actually Bush has been fiscally very un-Conservative. And the Reps who had both houses for 6 years certainly didn't help.
- writie, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Hope I'm not repeating myself, but foreign students at US universities and business schools are also down. Those brains are now studying in Europe. Their problem with the US is njot that they don't want to go, it's that the visa requirements make it impossible in many cases.
- pell, on 09/23/2008, -2/+12That means the influx in immigrants to Canada will increase.

Obviously Economics is not one of the areas you're retiring from. Before you call living, breathing human beings 'parasites'..I urge you to attempt to fully understand what you are commenting on. Also, congratulations on your 'first class' health care. 47 Million of your brothers, sisters, neighbors, friends and fellow humans are without basic coverage. Your own prosperity is all that matters, isn't that right?

- moracity, on 09/23/2008, -44/+18The one positive thing that will come out of Obama becoming president is that immigration will pretty much come to a halt. There will no longer be incentive to come here. Everyone in the U.S will be taxed into the poorhouse and we will no longer be able to choose our health care. People may as well stay where they are.
I'm seriously looking into Ireland, which is becoming the new beacon for opportunity.- PeppermintPig, on 09/23/2008, -9/+1I wouldn't call that a good thing, unless the point is to see revolution...

- chemstrike, on 09/23/2008, -4/+5Are you really so ignorant about universal health care that you think you won't be able to choose? Horsecrap. Everyone who currently ha healthcare won't really be affected, it's for the 25% of the rest of the nation, and largely covers preventive measures to help prevent more serious, and more costly diseases. It's ridiculous paranoia to think your health care will get WORSE by making it more available. . .
- thcobbs, on 09/23/2008, -1/+3300million people x $50 checkup... 1.5billion.... and that's just one a year and a low number....

- AyaJulia, on 09/23/2008, -0/+9@efl14: Your cousin lied to you. I'm in the middle of Canadian immigration right now, it really is tough.
Immigrating to the US isn't HARD administratively... it's just really ***** expensive. I'm an American married to a Canadian, and we chose to move here because a) There's 100% less George Bush here and b) Immigration paperwork in the States costs well over $1500 to file. I've spent about $250 on Canada so far, and only expect to spend about $500 more. - makkaveli19, on 09/24/2008, -1/+4welcome to canada aya. :) we are awsome here.
- spaceddaisy, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2@AyaJulia
But immigrating to the US is very hard administratively when you're not married to an American person or have any family there, it's pretty much an impossible task. I know, I've been trying to find a way to be able to live with my boyfriend for a while and actually have a normal relationship instead of 'ocean-hopping' a few times a year for visits. No luck so far, if anyone has some advice for me, it's very welcome!
- unorginalityftw, on 09/23/2008, -4/+8Actually it's true... Alberta has gotten a heavy influx. The kicker is they often try to pay establishments with the American dollar and get all bitchy when no one accepts it. o_O

immigrants, legal or not, do not "leach off" the US, I think it's the other way around. - GatorUSMC, on 09/24/2008, -2/+0I'll take the higher groceries and services. There will be less of a need to jack up my property tax to pay for their schooling, less people trying to push my kids into bilingual non-language classes(math, science, history), less health costs that cover the people who flood the hospitals and use it as primary care but don't pay and less crime (the amount of people I see come in who've committed crimes and are flagged with ICE holds is disgusting and the drunk driving makes it look like the wild west on some nights)
- Yesmad, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3To make it even better, you don't need to send your children to those over-priced universities either, because there will be noone to teach them. Don't bother going to the hospitals either, they'll be severly understaffed.

Plus, no immigrant takes anyone's jobs... They actually take jobs most americans won't do in the first place! But that's only a part of immigration... The other is of people who either want to move for personal reasons and are knowledge workers but just not sponsored by the big companies. The amount of paperwork you're required to fill in and the effort that the company that wants to hire you has to go through is really upsetting (to say the least!).
It's a sad truth... :(- Spire3660, on 09/23/2008, -3/+9What a simplistic, one dimensional view. You obviously have never had your job taken by an illegal. When working summer jobs installing irrigation systems while studying for my IT certifications, over 40 american jobs were lost to third world workers where I worked. One year it was me and my buddies, next year i got a promotion to jobsite foreman, all my buddies were fired and I got an all foreign crew. Good, all-american summer work for able-bodied citizens, given to foreigners. Alot of the blame falls to NAFTA, but it still doesnt change the point that an illegal/foreign work force takes jobs from hard working legal americans. - AgmLauncher, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4"They actually take jobs most americans won't do in the first place!"
Wrong. This is a service-based economy. Fewer immigrants means fewer people that need services which means fewer jobs needed to be filled in the first place. This means that what's left will gladly be filled by Americans who are looking for part time jobs (kids during summer or in college who some spending money) or families looking for a part-time second job for extra income.
The system will work itself out just fine. - thecatcantalk, on 09/23/2008, -0/+6The jobs "no American will do" paid a living wage, 20 years ago. Pretty much any job that doesn't require a bachelor's degree now pays 50% less (adjusted for inflation) than it had done in 1980.
A lot of that's due to globalization/outsourcing (why pay an American craftsman with 15 years' experience, when a Chinese political prisoner can be forced to do it for nothing?), but a lot of it's due to massive waves of immigration (Economics 101: excess supply causes a drop in price. D'oh! Three million workers apply for two million jobs, and boom, watch the wages plummet!).
Of course, if you accept the "miraculous exception to the law of of supply and demand" hypothesis, then I'll never convince you that the labor supply and wages are governed by economic laws that can be observed in action. - SpinningHead, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1Actually, immigration dropped in the 70s when farm workers started unionizing. As it is now, they are terrible underpaid jobs so immigrants move into the cities for better work while the big corporate farms have to fill in the labor gaps with more illegal immigrants.
- shig, on 09/24/2008, -1/+1If you can't fill out a piece of paper I don't think we need your citizenship. We'd rather have someone that is at least willing to file the proper forms. Perhaps someone willing to put some effort into it.
Sad truth, indeed.- spaceddaisy, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1Wow you have no idea how hard it is to immigrate legally to your country, do you? It takes a lot of money, tons of paperwork (not just some proper forms), sponsors, a prospective job (if you cannot immigrate based on family ties) or money for a college education (higher priced for foreigners coming to study) and usually years and years of your life.
I've been putting a big effort into it so far and I hope it will all go okay so I can be with the man I love in the USA. But don't think it is easy. It really isn't 'just apply for a green card here and fill out this form'.

- digjam, on 09/23/2008, -3/+21If illegal aliens are treated better than legal immigrants then no one would want to come..its that simple.
- GordonFree, on 09/23/2008, -1/+13I've been waiting for months for a fiancee visa to be able to go to the US permanently and marry my girl.
And we might wait almost a year for it... after being used to living there together as students.
Makes me angry when I see so many sham marriages between illegal immigrants, and they get everything processed way faster - they don't have to go through the pain of waiting for a loved one in a distant country! I love my gf and I love America, but it treats law abiding immigrants like *****.- reaper527, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5good luck with your paperwork. we need to be cracking down on illegals, and rewarding people like yourself who make a conscious effort to do this the right way. hopefully the mess that is our immigration system can be fixed in the next few years
- AgmLauncher, on 09/23/2008, -0/+7And law abiding immigrants are exactly the kind of immigrants that are HEALTHY for the economy. The ones that circumvent the legal process are significantly more likely to commit crime, or fail to acclimatize themselves with American culture.
- dmightx, on 09/23/2008, -1/+3@AgmLauncher
"more likely to commit crime, or fail to acclimatize themselves with American culture."
My city is filled with plenty of undocumented immigrants yet they are the ones who work the hardest and most honest(if you put aside their illegal status and at least the ones I know). The ironic thing is that a good amount of people who are granted citizenship through birthright (in my area) are the ones who are committing the crimes. Not all 1st generation citizens are that way however. - mpastrana, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Yep, its like that. Slow.
A quick look at sites like http://www.trackitt.com shows average wait times for all immigration processes going into the 300-500 day "range" as "normal". Its horrible! (something else to consider? legal fees; the regular process, from employment to green card, can go into some 5-odd years and run some $25,000 in lawyer fees)
You know, with the boomer "gap" coming up after they retire and the real estate bubble collapsing due to surplus housing, you would think that someone might see immigration as a way out of this hubbub, but this is apparently not the case.
/mp - spaceddaisy, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Gordon am in the same situation as you, just wanted to say good luck. Looks like it'll be a year to wait still for me and my man too. Thankfully we have Skype....
- GordonFree, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2Thanks everyone!
spaceddaisy good luck to you too :)
Yeah we use Skype like, 2 hours a day... I wish I was a Jumper like Hayden Christensen.
I might go visit her in the US soon (as a tourist). Add that to the money bills of waiting for a LEGAL process...
- GordonFree, on 09/23/2008, -1/+13I've been waiting for months for a fiancee visa to be able to go to the US permanently and marry my girl.
- happydaysz, on 09/23/2008, -25/+7Get outta here hispanos! And take yer tacos with you!
- rsHoratio, on 09/23/2008, -2/+2you are from ***** algeria, you dont get to talk
- GordonFree, on 09/23/2008, -1/+7Get outta here white man! And leave the indians alone
- dilibau, on 09/23/2008, -15/+35I, for instance, wanted to emigrate to my uncle in Seattle, who is a highly-respected physics professor at the University there. He himself arrived in the US more than 20 years ago, fleeing from the oppression he had suffered in our native communist country. Now he tells me to stay the ***** outta the US, since most of the liberties he enjoyed until Bush came to the White House are gone, since economic collapse is about to come down there and, more important, since every immigrant is now a potential terrorist..***** insane, this is how the US are today, and no one's doing a damn thing about impeachment
- billbugger, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4We're still waking up. We're heavy sleepers. It takes a few cups of coffee first ($700 billion blank check for one).
- Choop, on 09/23/2008, -7/+5It's ***** up views like this that prove how stupid the rest of the world really is.
Point 1: We still have all our "liberties"
Point 2: "every immigrant is a potential terrorist" doesn't even make sense. By that logic everyone on earth is a potential terrorist.
Point 3: ....well I'll give you the economic collapse but the beauty of a free market system means that all economic downturns swing back up at some point.
I swear everyone needs to stop acting like Chicken Little, Americans and foreigners alike.- keyforce, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Well, isn't everyone on earth a potential terrorist?
That's the beauty of xenophobia. - AyaJulia, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Actually Choop, the DHS has jacked up the immigration fees and closely scrutinizes immigration applications far more than has ever been done before. They ARE treating every like a terrorist.
- GatorUSMC, on 09/23/2008, -2/+0"closely scrutinizes immigration applications" Oh no, so harsh. Looking into applications instead of just using the rubber stamp certainly sounds like the kind of punishment a terrorist receives...
After all, the rubber stamp has worked so well for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac since Clinton lowered the standards. - AyaJulia, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1Way to not comprehend what I was saying at all. Take one too many bashes to the head in the marines, cannon fodder? :)
- writie, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2Last I heard, I'd have to get finger-printed to get IN to the US as a visitor, not even as an immigrant. Also, are not bank details being perused by immigration? I seem to remember something the Swift organisation having to supply the US with int'l banking operations.
"The program extracts information about bank transfers from the world's largest financial communication network, which is run by a consortium of financial institutions called the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or SWIFT.
The SWIFT network carries up to 12.7 million messages a day containing instructions on many of the international transfers of money between banks. The messages typically include the names and account numbers of bank customers, from private citizens to big corporations, who are sending or receiving funds."
Who needs this? I chose to pass on my last trip to the US for business. Fantastic country the last time I was there. But why bother submitting yourself to this sort of snooping? There are lots of other fantastic countries out there.
- keyforce, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Well, isn't everyone on earth a potential terrorist?
- AgmLauncher, on 09/23/2008, -5/+7Lol what liberties did Bush take from him?
I love how people say the Patriot act has taken away their freedoms when in fact all it's done is made lines at the airport a bit longer.
Seriously, I think people are behaving the same way they do when they hear about the outbreak of a disease, they start IMAGINING they have symptoms, when in fact they don't have any. People IMAGINE that Bush has created a Spanish Inquisition that comes breaking in every night in the middle of dinner to interrogate you, but it obviously hasn't happened. People are just being paranoid drama queens.- coolremo, on 09/23/2008, -2/+1-How about having your bag searched for no reason by the NYPD when you go to the subway station to take the train to/from school?
-How about being arrested for silent protest at the Republican National Convention - http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/97474/media_sil ... - AgmLauncher, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1And those affected dilibau's uncle how? Exactly, it hasn't. He's complaining about nothing.
- coolremo, on 09/23/2008, -2/+1-How about having your bag searched for no reason by the NYPD when you go to the subway station to take the train to/from school?

Name one... come on, just ONE. And while you're at it... name one country on the entire f'ing planet that is MORE free than the U.S. ((waits a good while)) That's what I though f*&kwad. Stay away... we'll be fine without another eastern eurotrash socialist drone like you, thank you very much.- karolisonline, on 09/23/2008, -2/+5"name one country on the entire f'ing planet that is MORE free than the U.S"
m... entire EU? Switzerland? and what about Holland??? - coolremo, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3Also Israel. It may be America's puppet but the people there have more freedom than in the U.S.
*waits for reply saying that Israel occupied the Palestinians' land.
- karolisonline, on 09/23/2008, -2/+5"name one country on the entire f'ing planet that is MORE free than the U.S"
- skeptic99, on 09/24/2008, -0/+0I have to agree with the respondents, life has changed very little in terms of liberties. We are very far from perfect but your Uncle is yanking your chain regarding loss of liberty.
- seraph582, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1Your uncle clearly doesn't want you to come over here. It's actually quite blissful aside from all the noise the whining babies that are crying about the other party's presidential candidate. The biggest industries over here are entertainment, and we're all very entertained and care free.
Food's cheap, transportation is cheap, jobs are easy to find - sure things have taken a small downturn recently, but nobody can really say it's not just natural considering nothing is good forever - there have to be dips every now and then no matter what.
It's not a big deal, and the sky isn't falling. I sure wish we could get a fiscally responsible presidential candidate though. It's a shame RP got bumped off. It looks like we'll have to be a little tighter with our money, but we'll still be fat, happy, employed fools throughout the whole thing.
- carabou, on 09/23/2008, -13/+16Funny how i am DAM proud of the good old USA! tuff times, but as a country we wil get past this and stand tall once again... dont believe me? take a look at history, and IT ALWAYS works out in the end!
- happydaysz, on 09/23/2008, -0/+7You said it! high five!
- sockpuppets, on 09/23/2008, -6/+20I'm sure the Romans said the same thing.
- billbugger, on 09/23/2008, -1/+2you beat me... soo true!
hopefully we won't go down that same apathetic path.
An empire must be conquered from the inside before it can be conquered from the outside. - EvilGunOwner, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1The Roman Republic and later, Empire, fell not because the "Barbarians", people who didn't speak Latin, got stronger. It fell because the Romans forgot what it meant to be Roman just as Americans started to forget what it means to be American at least since post-World War II. Avarice, apathy, laziness, and complacency extremely bad for an advanced civilization.
- shig, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1They still do. Oh, you're talking like there are no more Romans! I'm sorry, I'm not privy to any such historical event.
- seraph582, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1Rome fell because all of its citizens voted for benefits they did not want to pay for.
- billbugger, on 09/23/2008, -1/+2you beat me... soo true!

- Rudegar, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4yeah that was the general feeling when Hernán Cortés genocided the native Americans too i guess :S
- gheath87, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Arrogance will put keep the USA in a downward spiral. This country needed this crisis to help set us straight again. Getting a mortgage for 2x the amount you could afford can't be a long-term happy plan. This country was founded on crazy "common sense" - not irrational beliefs that everyone can own a 4,000 sq. foot home. We need balance in everything - including immigration. The Romans got gredy and didn't adjust - learn from history!
- carabou, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1thank you for your common sense my friend!
- kingmanic, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1US history is pretty short. I highly doubt this is the end of it but you need to take a critical look at the political and economic landscape. The American government has been kneecapping the American people for a long long time now.

For me..:-) you can give me and my entire family a free Visa even US Passport and 100.000 US starting capital we would not move one steep to go voluntary to the USA. This is not only because I believe Bush and his cronies a legally war criminals, but because what kind of social security the peoples in the US have? Look at the place after all this hurricanes. Who provided any help? Bush like more keep on with his Bin Laden Movie and the fools who believe, send 4500 US Soldiers in death, then help the peoples at home. If I look at the US, there are many stuff I really like, but move there..? No thanks- DonQueso, on 09/23/2008, -5/+8ok. great. stay right where you're at. we won't mind.
- writie, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1That's exactly what this article is saying: people are staying away. People from university students, to ordinary Joes and tourists. It's not the biggest deal in the world. But if I was American, I'd give it a few minutes thought.
- carabou, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1see hya in another life. If you believe all that crap you just spewed out than stay away! - DonQueso, on 09/23/2008, -3/+5pssst....no one wants to hear that! just say the country is going down the ***** and say we deserve it....
- ultraseamus, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4Glad someone said it, the dream is not instant easy wealth, it is the possibility. If you have the talent and drive then your success is up to you (not many countries can say that). People say America is becoming crap, but they are just comparing it to a non existent perfect country (or for some odd reason, Canada). The system makes it hard to get in, but if you are an intelligent person and you put effort into it it is possible, some of the world's most successful, admired people have been immigrants to America. But bashing America is still the cool thing to do, and I am guessing it will be until we are no longer the top world power (which will probably not take long).
- carabou, on 09/24/2008, -0/+1...AKA Hard work always wins!
- rupaw, on 09/23/2008, -0/+7The problem is not that America has it's issues. You're right: most other nations have their challenges. The problem is that there are very self-destructive forces in Washington at work who just don't get it. Pride and arrogance came before the fall.
The tragedy with America is that most of the current pain is self-inflicted. The USA lost it's name in the world. The terrorists succeeded because the US government unconsciously magnified their impact thousand-fold.
- PEMDAS, on 09/23/2008, -1/+17Immigrants still see America as a Land of Prosperity, according to my buddies who came here to fund their families back home. While they would, without hesitation, agree that America's not what it used to be, and that its facing some pressing economic challenges, they wouldn't say that the sun of Prosperity has set for the USA.
- DonQueso, on 09/23/2008, -0/+6Psst......no one wants to hear that! they want to hear how the us is going down the ***** and bush and co. are to blame. if you're not going to say anything like that it's best you don't say it.
- kigcoopa84, on 09/23/2008, -4/+9Maybe your buddies who are funding there family back home are the helping slow the economy

why dont people understand that unless you make over 250k/year, you are shooting yourself in the foot voting republican - you simply wont benefit from their policies. - kigcoopa84, on 09/23/2008, -3/+6"why dont people understand that unless you make over 250k/year, you are shooting yourself in the foot voting republican" What Obama's plan on unlimited increases in other payroll taxes such as social security and Medicare, that effects people who don't make enough to pay taxes.
- BabyWookie, on 09/23/2008, -1/+5That doesn't even make sense. You don't like the potential increase in social welfare spending and you're going to move to a country with even bigger social welfare spending? Typical right-winger logic. LOL.
- seraph582, on 09/24/2008, -0/+2@Jasuus - repubs haven't been about "small gov't" since Reagan. Where have you been? Both sides, repubs and dems, are all about rewriting the constitution and bulking up federal power.

Now? 10 years on? The place has been in steady decline and getting even more off-base, seemingly with a contingent of people hellbent on either corrupting and stealing from what is left, or accepting it with blind apathy. It's really - from an immigrants point of view - quite sad.
