Yes. - byen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+55Every once in a while.. when you least expect it... you see something like this. You forget about all your worries and realize that all the hurdles that worry you in your personal life are not only minuscule but also irrelevant. Makes you appreciate how lucky you are. I am sorry I am not striving to make a difference in the lives of people who need my help the most but I thank you for clearing my mind and setting my priorities straight. To all the people in these pictures and to all those whose sufferings go unnoticed .. I am so sorry. Someday, may be, I will have the balls to make a difference. Salut!
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+43what's worse was the group the photographer was travelling with was forbidden from touching or helping any of the refugees. the photographer killed himself not so long after winning an award for the photo.

- xdcdx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32This video shows the events immediatly before and after the Phan Thị Kim Phúc picture (burnt vietnamese girl running, escaping fron the napalm) was taken (it is moderately explicitd, not for the faint-hearted):

"Fox News?"
I'm Ron Burgundy? - UtahApocalyse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Wow very impressive collection. So much history documented there. Much of it so sad. What pictures of our time now will be looked back on in 20, 50, or 100 years as defining our history.
- cresswga, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20There was a documentary I saw on HBO about the guy that took the photo. I hadnt heard of him so I found it very interesting.
There was a huge outcry over the photo and complaints that the photographers did not do more to help the child. But the truth was that they saw stuff like that every hour of the day and become almost numb to it whereas everyone in the comfort of their own living room had the "luxury" of being shocked by it. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26More like, "Images of War, Death, and Those Responsible"

- Geniustwin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9What the ***** is the matter with this world?
Dig me down or whatever is cool these days, but these images should serve as a reminder to all of us that are plugged in and disassociated these days that our world is ***** up, almost beyond repair.
Additionally, these images haven't changed a goddamn thing. We're too numb and sedated to allow that to happen. - ngmcs8203, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The sites back up -

"Red Cross rescue workers had apparently repeatedly appealed to the government for a pump to lower the water level and for other help to free the girl. Finally rescuers gave up and spent their remaining time with her, comforting her and praying with her. She died of exposure after about 60 hours." - jjk5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yeah, I've read that Che's mug is the most reproduced _portrait_.
I think I also read once that the flag raising at Iwo Jima was the most reproduced photograph in general. - Jaq524, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Mary Ann Vecchio didn't die, she's the one kneeling over the body in the Kent State shot.
- operand, on 10/11/2007, -1/+81930 photo of two men accused of raping a white girl. They were basically drug out of the county jail from the locals and hanged.
- jhole, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7An interesting read about the photographer of that photo:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Carter - binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -0/+7That video was more real than anything I ever read about Vietnam. War truly is hell. Thank you for posting.

- davdav, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I remember that issue when it came out. Such a stunning picture.
- dionhewson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5how nested will this go?
- Genady, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Is anyone else struck buy the generation that most of these pictures belong to? The vast majority are the pictures of the Baby Boomers, they almost chronicle that generations lifetime. There's a few on either end, but for the most part they're all about the Boomers. Where are our pictures, or is it just that the generation to come after hasn't been able to change the world?
- thebru, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The toppling of Saddams statue, definately.
New Orleans & the SE Asia Tsunami as well. - nikkilai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I've never heard that before. However, she did take several pictures of this woman and her child. The real propaganda here is that the press chose the most emotionally provoking photo out of all of the shots she took to put in the newspapers.
- SasquatchBill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I totally disagree!
Without the pictures, the reality of what happens is far more distant in people's minds. Many of these pictures brought the events closer to reality for those not involved - if you don't understand the impact of that, look to all the power that 'media' has on influencing society. Can you imagine the difference if the photos did not exist?
Certainly, some of the pictures had less 'influence' than others - for instance, the picture of Winston Churchill doesn't really bring any new pieces of the story to reality in the same way that the picture of the child being stalked by a vulture does. We've all seen OTHER pictures of children dying in Africa, but that is the one that affected an incredible amount of people.
The pictures themselves are incredibly important! - AoiTakuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4A few of the photos got me choked up too. female emotions have nothing to do with it, there are some heavy images in this collection
- uscnir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I've read a bit about the Iwo Jima photograph - you should research the history behind it a bit more and update the text - its quite interesting.
Basically they put up the flag 5 days into a 35 day battle. The original flag was sent to Washington by one of the generals so a party went to replace it with a new flag. It was the raising of this second flag which was photographed in a completely stage managed way and the photo went on to become a major propaganda tool for the US government. - ayeroxor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6And it was somewhere else before reddit, you stupid tool. Welcome to the internet, and welcome to being blocked.
