Big Brother gone berserk, this is criminal...this is murder....this is an act of the MOST heinous cruelty....THIS BLOOD is on the hands of an administration who thinks they ARE GOD!
May the universe treat those responsible with the same kindness - jadenar, on 08/13/2008, -0/+10FTA: "In April, Mr. Ng began complaining of excruciating back pain. By mid-July, he could no longer walk or stand. And last Wednesday he died, his spine fractured and his body riddled with cancer that had gone undiagnosed and untreated for months."
Through it all, he was never allowed a wheelchair or even a medical exam. They accused him of faking the pain.
This guy lived in the U.S. for half of his life. He was a geek, a computer consultant. How close to home does this have to hit? - mblanken, on 08/13/2008, -0/+12What has happened to us as a society? Why are human beings treated in this manner? Where is the outrage over these and other stories of abuse, neglect, and deliberate indifference?
- lllamlll, on 08/14/2008, -0/+0Not to dismiss or anything, but haven't those words (in one form or another) been said for years?
The "What's happening to our society?", "Why are Americans so indifferent?", etc.
There is outrage for certain Americans about inhumane treatment by the government, but unless that treatment also threatens the dollar, hits home to some American celebrity, or affects a vast proportion of American citizens, said life trots on.

- TheOtherOne135, on 08/13/2008, -0/+9There should be criminal charges brought against those in charge of the facilities that refused adequate medical care.
- DebbieKat, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6This is absolutely disgusting. Our country has no moral compass, no respect for humanity and the well-being of others, no sanctity for life at all. And ruled by "compassionate conservatives" who claim to be pro-life. Does anyone else see a problem with this?
- kyledeb, on 08/13/2008, -0/+8I've been emailed this article several times and I didn't want to read it. I finally did and it ends on such a horrible note. Two U.S. citizen sons without a father because of a messed up U.S. immigration system. It begs the question, what does U.S. citizen or "American" mean?
Nativists don't include people like Ng in their definition of "American". Many of them advocate for the end of birthright citizenship, which would make his 1 and 3-year-old sons not "American".
Race certainly has something to do with it, but at the end of the day it's nativism that allows these horrors to continue. It's the belief that someone doesn't deserve the same rights just because they born on a different piece of earth. - djturtlep, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6This is incredibly sad. When will the Federal Government finally investigate ICE and DHS? How many more innocent people have to die?!
- jannamariposa, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6What a horrible loss, and a huge shame on our country. His pain was ignored as if he were an animal. This is criminal.
And what the hell is ICE doing detaining people who are in the process of getting a green card? They are deterring people from legalizing their status!
This needs to stop!- BlueSuedeShoe, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3The men and women of ICE and Wyatt hid behind their jobs, their titles, their rationalized excuses to torture and execute a harmless, vulnerable, young father by other means. And we have all been guilty too, of looking the other way, tolerating the inhumanity that goes on everyday, perpetuating injustice under the veil of law and order. We must stand up to unjust laws. Enough. Enough. Enough.
- MdeG, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6Dear God, how horrible. This guy clearly spoke fluent English and tried to explain what was happening to him. How do you accuse someone with terminal cancer -- whose relatives say he seems to have aged decades -- of "faking"??? What are we turning into? I'm horrified.
- danfive555, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3That is messed up.
Government was (briefly) about regulations and protecting people's rights.
Now it's about de-regulation and favoring politics over justice.
Quite pathetic. - bgberger, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1chertoff and bush - another example of a winning team.
chertoff is a disgrace to his training and his heritage
if he had honor, he resign - saamisammi, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1"On July 30, according to an affidavit by Mr. Wong, he was contacted by Larry Smith, a deportation officer in Hartford, who told him on a speakerphone, with Mr. Ng present, that he wanted to resolve the case, either by deporting Mr. Ng, or “releasing him to the streets.” Officer Smith said that no exam by an outside doctor would be allowed, and that Mr. Ng would not be given a wheelchair."
clearly ICE knew it was culpable. shameless inhuman depraved animals. how low and degraded do you have to be to completely ignore a person's suffering like that. A fractured spine... i wonder if they were partly responsible for that. - TonksLupin, on 08/14/2008, -0/+0Although there are clearly Federal issues at work (to be euphemistic), we are horrified in Rhode Island. Almost exactly one year ago, a Brazilian man died in ICE custody.
Today's Providence Journal has an article about potential state investigations, etc.
