- GawtMilk, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3THE BOREALIS! Dry dock and all!
- MookiBlaylock, on 09/19/2008, -0/+42Very interesting story. Don't understand why they just left it there when they first discovered it in '69.
- worldchanger, on 09/20/2008, -1/+21it was the sixties. they were busy doping up.
- mentaldingo, on 09/20/2008, -0/+6Moving it might destroy it...
- kelliillek, on 09/20/2008, -0/+0I wondered the same thing. . . woulda been something awful to stub your toe on!
- diothar, on 09/19/2008, -1/+28Hmmm, this is the first time the Digg recommendation engine actually recommended an article that I wanted to read.
- Derrekito, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3hahaha! No kidding, right?
- FTWmovin2canada, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2It works much better if you browse recommendations by category. I find great content all the time with it.
- salmonfish, on 09/20/2008, -1/+17That is pretty cool, but I like how the "enlarge image" link enlarges it roughly 1.2 times. Thanks.
- toetagger, on 09/20/2008, -15/+9They just may be the ship McCain served on.
- abszint, on 09/20/2008, -14/+5***** the riaa
- ShuttleXpC, on 09/20/2008, -11/+2Noah's Ark.
- mysticalone, on 09/20/2008, -1/+8It's a sailboat
- ufia, on 09/20/2008, -4/+3This is my vessel, give it back!
- fletchsd, on 09/20/2008, -13/+5That ship represents McCain's campaign. Old , washed up, tattered, and not going anywhere. Time will bury it and it may never be seen again.
- kelstock, on 09/20/2008, -3/+3Amazing what just 150 years will do to a shipwreck buried in the sand. Wonder how long a ship like that would last fully exposed to the waves.
- AchaIemoipas, on 09/20/2008, -11/+5Buried as the most insignificant news story I've ever read.
It was discovered in 1969 ffs. - MarsSentinel, on 09/20/2008, -9/+3Florida is funny. Old White Peepal in Florida are funnier. Earth to WHite Peepal: when tyou are 70, don't wear shorts and flipflops. It makes you look sad.
- rex84, on 09/20/2008, -12/+6Gas went up $0.50 per gallon because of speculation before the hurricane even hit Texas, then it didn't do nearly the damage they speculated it would, and now, a week later the prices are still up $0.50 per gallon. What a bunch of price fixing and gouging.
- Protoss, on 09/20/2008, -1/+5It did a pretty fair amount of damage, especially for what the storm turned out to be category wise.
- MaxIsBored, on 09/20/2008, -1/+8What the ***** does that have to do with the shipwreck?
- rex84, on 09/20/2008, -5/+3Don't cuss at me.
- ZeroVector, on 09/20/2008, -4/+2That is just cool.
- dhlake, on 09/20/2008, -10/+2Ike caused over $6 billion in losses and there are thousands who have lost homes but the media chooses not to provide more that superficial coverage and the Government Bailout goes to the poor of Wall Street. At least during Katrina the media did not turn their backs, although I am unable to recall the bailout amount. Now the media is focused on pigs and lipstick and pit bulls that are probably far more endangered than polar bears. You wonder who controls the politicians and the conglomerate corporate media.
- dezweber, on 09/20/2008, -0/+7While I realize that Ike was a bad storm, it by no means caused the same sort of catastrophic damage that Katrina did if you include the levees breaking in New Orleans.
- IndustrialJones, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2My parents were showing me the article in the local paper yesterday when I came in to town. Some of the other relatives coming in are going to check it out tomorrow morning.
- crossDborder731, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2yeah, Ike was not as great as Katrina. When we came from San Antonio on Monday morning, all we saw (in Houston) was some large trees blown down. but there was not any significant amount of flooding. just about a foot maximum. We went to check on other relatives houses (we live in southwest; they live in the eastern part), all we saw was flooding up to 2 feet. Its not as bad.
But Galveston had the worst impact (obviously). some houses were not even there. the highway along the beach (i forgot the name), had all the debris piled in one long line, all along the coast. The good thing about this is that the water receded back to the ocean. It didn't stay on land like in New Orleans.
@dhlake
you say there is no media coverage about Ike. fu, you should watch the local channels here. every single channel (that is not religious), even the spanish ones, are still telling us stories on how their camera crews reacted during the storm, where PODs are, who's giving stuff for victims, etc.
- dezweber, on 09/20/2008, -0/+7While I realize that Ike was a bad storm, it by no means caused the same sort of catastrophic damage that Katrina did if you include the levees breaking in New Orleans.
- lex0nyc, on 09/20/2008, -3/+7Would be more interesting if it was a saucer.
- crazygamer67688, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4specially one from the future
- Betrayer, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3everybody knows that the aliens recover their lost space ships.
it would have been better if parts of the underwater alien citys washed up.
- chikuten, on 09/20/2008, -0/+16other specialists speculate that the mate of the ship was a mighty sailing man, the skipper brave and sure. five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour, a three hour tour.
...sorry. - dupeduperson, on 09/20/2008, -3/+4My father-in-law lives right down there. I need to send him down and check it out.
- flickrdoodle, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2I grew up about three miles from there, across from Cabana Beach.. I'm not your father-in-law but I might know him if he's an oldtimer. :)

http://www.destination360.com/europe/sweden/vasa-m ... - HallenbeckJoe, on 09/20/2008, -3/+2No, it's a (Civil War) schooner! :-)
- str0bot, on 09/20/2008, -1/+0A schooner is a sailboat, stupid-head!
- OrangeBeacher, on 09/20/2008, -1/+2More photos, video and information is available at http://www.orangebeach.ws
- rpieszak, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3"It's a valuable artifact," he said. "They need to get this thing inside before it falls apart or another storm comes along and sends it through those houses there like a bowling ball."
Not trying to make light of what would be a sad situation, but the way he worded that is funny. - tpclicker, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3Good old ike.
- Wakkyweed, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4Stay away! There's gonna be Ghost Pirates on that ship! Where are Shaggy and Scooby when you need them...
- bitfreak, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3That's cool. I wonder if it could be from the Texas Navy? I understand Texas had it's own Navy for a time.
- Azuvic, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1i believe they did....
- Betrayer, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3nice find.. can someone get closeup pictures of the metal on the front of the boat ?,and or some closeup pics of any wooden joints and or dowels (pins) holding it togther?
some other clues to the ships age would be the coral growing on the ship (what kind of coral. how thick it is it)- offrdbandit, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1There is no coral in this part of the Gulf. Those would be oxides building up on the iron. And it was buried.
- Skooma714, on 09/20/2008, -1/+2Would it get some wind for the sailboat?
And it could be for it is. - bagboyrebel, on 09/20/2008, -1/+1Obviously it held the Stargate, meaning we never activated it. Now we're all doomed.
- Azuvic, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Its an artifact, and its not everyday a mystery ship washes ashore
- OutpostNetwork, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1When you marooned me on that god forsaken spit of land, you forgot one very important thing, mate: I’m Captain Jack Sparrow.
- offrdbandit, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1There is a ton of history in this area. A few months back a construction crew dug up an unexploded artillery round that had been fired at Fort Morgan. The round failed to detonate, buried itself into the sand, and lay there for 150 years.
"Damn the torpedoes" and all that jazz.
Best place in the world to live. - mstachiw, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1its tragic but understandable... the boat's crewmen obviously didn't have the technology to know Ike was coming being from the Civil War and all
- mmeiser, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1you know what might make this store better... a picture better then a damn thumbnail... why the thumbnail? what is wrong with these people??
Check out the new & improved
