Hundreds of U.S. citizens being cut off from rest of country
brownsvilleherald.com — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's map confirmed Pamela Taylor's worst fears. The border fence will rise 18 feet in front of the house she and her husband built by hand in 1947. There will be no access point Taylor, no road connecting her property to Brownsville and the rest of the United States.

- johnny2k, on 04/28/2008, -1/+26No, wait, are they telling me that the fence isn't going to be ON the border, but that Americans will be on the wrong side of the fence? How stupid is that!
I will be sharing this article!- DavidHalko, on 04/28/2008, -0/+6It looks like those people in DHS who disapprove of controlling the borders will cede thousands of acres to Mexico through it's line drawing exercise!
"One of them is Tim Loop, whose house lies a few hundred yards south of the Rio Grande's levee. Loop and his brother, Paul, grew up along the river. Now they farm 1,000 acres on the border - all of which will be behind the fence."
This is just one family... just one farm...
U.S. DHS needs to do the right thing - build a fence on the border and not cede land to Mexico. - Argentian, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3How better to later on say, it isn't fair what happened to them, we'd better take this section of the fence down...and forget to put it up on the border!!

- camelseye, on 04/28/2008, -0/+21The fence to keep illegals out, will keep out citizens? This is ridiculous. If DHS creates the problem it should, at the least purchase the land it de-values by excluding it from the US. Sad. I hope the outcome is good for everyone involved.
- PappyPapillon, on 04/28/2008, -1/+21Idiocracy in action.
- alanhlake, on 04/28/2008, -1/+16I hear my Government saying, "If the people are going to force us to do what we're legally obligated to, we'll make 'em sorry by hurting old, defenseless widows with cancer. It'll really be the fault of the conservatives for making us do our job." Excuse me while I go lose my lunch!! Does anyone realize that the whole idea of America is to protect the rights of the individual American?
- Nannybell, on 04/28/2008, -6/+6Am not a lawyer, but some thoughts are: The fence has to be located *somewhere.* That means Americans whose property is essentially on the border will be affected. Seems unavoidable. Does the border contain a federal right-of-way/easement of a specific width on the American side? If so, does that easement go through the land of these property owners? If it does, there is most likely nothing they can do, but Uncle Sam should buy them out so that no residences will be located along that fence. This action disturbs their lives, but it happens all the time. Near us, the rural countryside is being swallowed up by new development. It's a common sight to see an older home that was once *in the country* is now in the midst of a development of new homes. In one case, a large new roadway is being built between two homes on acreage. Their formerly tranquil setting will now have busy traffic going right by their houses (though I suspect they are being bought out). It's happening everywhere. If the power company has an easement across your land, they can (and do) come in and replace those wood poles with gigantic metal ones whenever they wish. Lesson: Check for utility easements before you purchase property.
Until very recently, I favored the fence. Now I'm not so sure. What aactually needs to be done is a nationwide, consistent crackdown on employers who hire illegals, and to put pressure on the Mexican government. What can be done to change the Mexican system so that those people do not feel so desperate to come here? I realize it isn't only citizens of Mexico who are coming here, and no doubt we can't change all of Central and South America to be less dysfunctional.- animalwheeler, on 04/28/2008, -1/+5Hi NB,
I see your silent trolls are following you still.
I agree with the country side getting swallowed up. Here in Iowa, people from the city, who complain about smackeral of dirt, move out the country, and then complain about the dust/dirt during planting and harvest time. The move KNOWING there is hog/cattle lots nearby, and then complain about the smell after they move in when the wind comes from [whatever] direction. Ignorance and lack of common sense; and a lack of respect.
Like everything else the gov does, it does it for money, instead of the citizens. Our gov lacks the common sense God gave a cockroach; so I unfortunately do not see the gov changing it's position on the fence route anytime soon.- Nannybell, on 04/29/2008, -2/+2Yes, they follow me around and digg me down for no reason other than because it's me. I personally don't bother doing that to others unless I just really disagree with them.
Around here, *city slickers* move out to the country and build their gigantic big-hair homes. They look ridiculous to me... *little?* mansions on the prairie. We've been in the city for almost 6 years but have now found a country place and will move out to it in just a few more months. We just couldn't take the city any longer! It will increase my husband's daily commute but he doesn't care.

Absolutely. This is what the department of 'Homeland SSecurity' SHOULD be doing instead of harassing American citizens..
- animalwheeler, on 04/28/2008, -1/+5Hi NB,
- ikbrooks, on 04/28/2008, -2/+4I am also concerned but think if this ties up the fence project to the point that it will be delayed or not built it may be a good thing. To explain, I am of the opinion we need to stem the tide of illegals to our country. I do not, however, think we need a fence. Consider this, I think the focus should be on the employers that are employing the illegals. This action will keep the illegals from being able to obtain employment because it would become cost prohibitive to do so for the employers.
I am by no means in agreement with the left that the illegals should be given everything after they get here by breaking our laws. I just think if they cannot find a job here then there is not reason to come. BTW when I say not given anything I mean healthcare, food stamps, driver licenses or anything for that matter from the government aka John Q. Taxpayer! Just a thought from your local right wing nut. Kevin B - Navigator7, on 04/28/2008, -0/+9A fence is statement the USA cannot enforce it's laws.
If illegal aliens believed the land of free handouts, food, free health care, free medical care, and incentive to get pregnant and become a baby factory, and scamming the system now has come to a close....won't the fences impeded the flow of illegals to the south?
Enforce the law and deny services.
Subsidize bus companies while traveling south by allowing then to offer free fares to any Mexican border crossing.
I'm amazed...as soon as the exodus started the MSM stopped covering it's effectiveness:
http://www.voanews.com/english/archive/2007-11/200 ...- DavidHalko, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3A fence is statement the USA may actually try to enforce it's laws... building a fence is the first step.
Tracking visitors at entry and egress points (borders, airports, ports, etc.) is a second step.
Providing/Denying Services to all documented people (citizens, aliens, visitors, etc.) is a third step.
If someone is a visitor, they should be documented... there should be no way for a visitor to enter a nation without being documented - thus the need for a fence.

- michael4lsu, on 04/28/2008, -1/+6I agree that it should be a priority that we remove the incentives illegals have for entering our country, including all the welfare programs and illegal employment, and enforce our laws. This will drastically reduce the influx of illegal aliens and will send most of them who are already here back home.
If we still want to secure our borders, a border fence may be helpful, but the border fence should be built along the BORDER. But a border fence alone simply is not enough. Illegals will still make their way across, even by digging more tunnels if necessary.- 2trkpony, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4A "bigger fence' won't do *****. That's a distraction so the traitors in power could say they've "done something."
Prosecute the companies that higher illegal invaders to the fullest extent of applicable law. Million dollar fines. Criminal penalty. Prison sentences. Problem solved. American citizens shouldn't have our jobs sold out to undocumented invaders who aren't registered to work here legally. We shouldn't have our jobs stolen out from under us by those who break the law. Period. Liberty does not mean illegal aliens have the right to break US immigration law.
We don't need to waste billions of dollars in taxpayer money on some ultra corrupt "Homeland SSecurity" dept. We certainly don't need to waste billions more of our money "building a bigger fence!" Just enforce the current immigration laws (that exist for a reason). What a concept. You'd think if these politicians were the slightest bit sincere in their intent to "solve the illegal immigration problem" they would have realized this by now.
The ***** sham "Homeland SSecurity" farce goes after taxpaying American citizens right. Harasses us, cuts us off from the rest of the country. What kind of B.S. is that. Where is the "SSecurity" for said citizens of the homeland? Is this America or Nazi Germany? Put this enormous waste of taxpayer dollars to good use prosecuting, pursuing and harassing undocumented **illegal invaders** for directly violating U.S. immigration laws instead of ***** over legally registered American taxpaying citizens out of their property line. But that would be discrimination, right?
US politicians and administration protect and support Illegals over US citizens. The jokers in power do not wish to solve any kind of "illegal immigration problem" That's nothing but patronizing rhetoric. Hasn't everybody realized this by now? It's a lie folks. Total smoke & mirrors illusion to be propped up for political gain come voting time. Another fraud the bought, sold & paid for career politicians sell the duped apathetic serfs (us). Anything they do is going to be a half-baked non-solution FARCE which will only create further problems. Millions of undocumented illegals running amok in America is exactly what the sell-outs want.

- USNavyBlue, on 04/28/2008, -0/+6My ideas include:
1) Cut off all welfare and NO MORE ANCHOR BABIES and free citizenship.
2) Make crossing the border a felony, an act of invasion, bar the person from ever coming to America on legal grounds or even just to visit on a Visa.
3) Charge the country that the illegal is from that it costs to deport his or her butt. If the country won't pay, then start deducting the money from the trade that the USA does with that country! That will fix them.
4) Felony charges for any American employer small or large that employees them.
5) Felony charges for anyone or Churches (Catholic comes to mind) for aiding and abetting a fugitive.
That will stop the majority of them. The only ones running across the border now are here to do the USA harm - terrorists comes to mind. The BP wold be able to focus on that, instead of Paco and Maria crossing the desert with her ready to give birth on American soil!
If the border fence must be built - double layer fence with bob wire and concreted in the middle so underground tunnels can not be dug, not a single picket fence either because that is what DHS is building! I am not kidding either.
And make sure the fence goes around American citizens home and that they are on the RIGHT side of the fence. This is just another lame excuse from the Communist, Dual Citizen, former KGB Agent Michael "No Loyalty" Chertoff to say I told you so that this was going to effect Americans and another excuse to drag there sorry asses not to build the fence.
WHAAT! Does this mean that the couple in question property and land just got officially annexed to Mexico? Does this mean that the USA is giving away part of the USA for free? And now her and her husband will now be official citizens of Mexico? I think NOT! - 2trkpony, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5"The Department of Homeland SSecurity" is nothing but a fascist, unConstitutional Hitlerian sham forced on us by PNAC chickenhawk neocon deceivers under the fraudulent guise of "protecting us from terrorists!" (lie). It needs to be abolished ASAP. Nothing but a horrific waste of our hard earned tax money and resources. America has a Constitution for a reason. This is still America, right?
- demicritter, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1With over 5,000 miles of border between the US and Canada and close to 2,000 between us and Mexico, not to mention the 95,000 miles of coastline, building fences is impractical at the very least. Notwithstanding the means by which the government thugs obtain and steal land, perhaps this should be the focus? The government imposing its will on the public...
