But considering the numbers of coverups or half coverups since Putin took over, it won't be surprising. Start with the Russian sub incident where they didn't want anyone elses help and insisted some of the crew made it, and then later on insisted it was a mistake and everyone was dead after their rescue attempt failed and so on.

I take it you hadn't seen some of the photoshopped images that appeared on September 11, 2001? I don't necessarily approve of it, but it's a coping mechanism for some people (although, in the St. Petersburg case, it's probably because of a total lack of information at the time, which the link points out). - Biks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1re: photoshopping images

A POWERFUL explosion which hit a gas pipeline in north-west Russia was not caused by an act of terror and there were no reports of casualties, senior officials said today.
"It is an explosion on a trunk gas pipeline under high pressure," said Valentin Sedorin, a spokesman for the Leningrad region around Russia's second city of St Petersburg.
Witnesses spoke of a massive explosion that shook buildings 5km from the epicentre and caused traffic jams as people jumped in cars and fled from the area.
Mr Sedorin said the incident had been contained.
"We do not have any reports of any casualties. We are not ordering an evacuation of homes in the vicinity. There is no danger to peoples' lives," he said.
Emergency officials were unable to say what caused the explosion, but Vladimir Kudryavtsev, head of the regional emergencies ministry department, said: "I personally exclude a version that this was caused by an act of terror".
Sergei Gustov, head of the Gazprom gas company's local subsidiary Peterbuggaz, said the accident would not affect supplies to foreign consumers.
"This will not affect supplies to Russian or foreign consumers of Russian natural gas in any way," Gustov told Reuters at the scene outside Russia's second largest city of St Petersburg.
A Reuters reporter at the scene said the air was thick with smoke, making breathing difficult.
He said roads were clogged with vehicles heading away from the fire, while hundreds of people leaving on foot.
The explosion was at a point where the pipeline ran close to a power station on the northern outskirts of St Petersburg.
Emergency services officials said windows at the power station had been blown out by the blast. It had destroyed a 50m section of the 80cm diameter pipeline.- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11When the Soviet, erm, Russian authorities say there is no danger to your life, it's time to run as fast as you can.

In one particular case, we let the Russians steal the software with a few lines of "special" code just for them. The resulting explosion was about 1/4 the strength of the Hiroshima bomb.

Meltdowns do NOT create mushroom clouds. Nuclear bombs and plants are TOTALLY different. The article posted above says it was near a power station.
