- bongo, on 06/30/2008, -1/+20That's pretty great, and it's a prime example of how we (the US) can improve our image abroad by just learning a little about other cultures. Diplomacy through cultural exchange.

- pyry, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7Oĩmba paraguayos o guaraní oñe'ẽva digg-pe? :D
Guaraní actually isn't really 'obscure' as the article states. Paraguay is a bilingual nation, and Guaraní is spoken by a majority of the population. It's only obscure because the Miami Herald hasn't heard of it before. - Grommy, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6This is a pretty fascinating article, it's a shame no one's reading it.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6It's a shame this is a lot more interesting than a predictable political video rehashing what the average Digg user already thinks about a certain politician. Too bad Digg ain't interested in a good story these days as it is in redundant political submissions.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Wait, the article actually says about 96% of Paraguayans speak it...
It's obscure in the world, but not in Paraguay is what the article is saying I gather. - SeventhSon, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4I saw a person who went on really annoying non sequiturs a couple of seconds ago, it just came to mind for some reason.
- somnambulator, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4You absolute arse!
As a non-American it's great, and frankly a relief, to see such intelligence, humility and selfless behaviour coming from an American, and an American politician at that.
He should be given Americas equivalent of a knighthood for his dedication to his position, and his obvious respect for the people of the countries he served in.
In fact he should be given Paraguays highest honour for actually treating them and their country with the ultimate respect, learning their language.
Something so simple, and yet sadly so rare.
Diplomats like this, make the world a better place to live in. If you are American you should be proud of him. - toasterweasel, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4peteîha!
- m4lomb, on 06/30/2008, -2/+5At least he is entertaining Paraguayos instead of killing people aborad or, worse yet, depriving us of our civil liberties.
- reflex768, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Very good call Maru. It's directly related. When I read that submission from Stuart earlier it reminded me of this one, and went back through my history and found it.

I live here.. and I'm not even famous... FAIL ! - pyry, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1mokõiha!

- Kyan, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Dude, it's obscure. Probably more people speak Tatar than Gauraní and most everyone in Paraguay would say Tatar is obscure. It depends on your point of reference, doesn't it?

I can slam my head on a keyboard too :D - billyfalconer, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I'm very surprised the current administration allowed someone so interesting and competent to stay in that position, instead of replacing him with an incompetent political toady.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Try it 4 or 5 hundred times.
- OilTheMachine, on 06/30/2008, -1/+0I like what Martin Luther King Jr. said in respect to judging on the basis of one's character. Perhaps that should apply to nations as well. Sure Americans offend other countries, but if one group of countries isn't offended then another group will be. I say America (and all other countries) worry less about the nuances of cultural relations and just focus on doing what is right and fair. Like what John Adams had in mind.
- sardion2000, on 06/30/2008, -3/+2LOL. America hasn't worried about the nuances of cultural relations since well... ever! The last 8 years of Bush Administrating has only brought this willful ignorance about the world and other cultures as a whole to a new low.
