Digg Townhall Tonight!
Tune into the live Digg townhall tonight at 5:00pm PST/8:00pm EST.
How much beer does your country drink?

- DarkSenay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24map: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Map_of_world_by_beer_consumption.png
- wbreim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18notice in the map that more developed countries hae more beer drinkers obviously but notice France, Italy there's no data. I think it must be because they drink wine like we drink beer.
- swiftekho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Yeah, I do believe the Czechs have been on the beer scene a lot longer than most... However, Ireland doesn't disappoint its sons and daughters, with a valiant second.
- over90, on 10/12/2007, -20/+1How did they calculate the values? If they calculated it from the pints, then the Imperial Pint is bigger than the US Pint.
- dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I've always wondered why I drink so much damn beer, now I know, I'm Czech.
- floridiot2, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3It says by liter... Although I have absolutely no reference to how much a liter actually is.. except for a 2liter bottle of soda(not pop) :>.
- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35"How did they calculate the values? If they calculated it from the pints, then the Imperial Pint is bigger than the US Pint."
They probably calculated it from the liters.. You know, like standard unit of measurement... - jdc760, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26People are ***** with Wikipedia... the order just changed twice in two minutes...

Love my beer, in fact I'm drunk right now!! - InvertedDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3As long as we beat Canada and France i am happy.

Me too :) Friday lunch at the pub! - fizzup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@floridiot2
A litre is about half of one of those two litre bottles of pop.
More helpful: It's about 5% more than two US pints. Czechs are drinking, on average, a little less than a pint a day each. - 0x0000ff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4***** stupid beer. wrong commenty place area thingo
- 8177, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Man if i moved to greenland and got *****, i bet i could top the czech republic.
- Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2WTF. Ireland is number two? Didn't see that coming...
- spamzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Go Australia!!!!
Take that you yanks!! hahaha :-) - TheKorn2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1This is the most inaccurate story ever.
The numbers are from KIRIN, people! So this isn't a graph of how much beer people drink, but how much KIRIN beer people drink!
It's a bit like counting how many drug users there are by counting the number of prostitutes. Not (at all!) accurate or the same thing! - mikkelfunck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@thekorn2
This has nothing to do with kirin.
These numbers match the official numbers of total beer consumption in Denmark. Im from Denmark and I can assure you that noones drink Kirin in Denmark.
cheers - pazmanpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Better list of consumption by World Health Organisation.

It's a little old, but better breakdown. - Chazzer3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nice work fellow Austrians, let's keep it up!
- Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in Australia and have never even heard of Kirin til now.
- bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@over90 -- Usually Litres/Year is measured in Litres... per year... not pints.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For Czechs, thats over a can a day (~14 oz) on average.
- satchman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45dammit canadians, let's get to work! 19th? for SHAME!
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Ireland is the one that really has a reputation to maintain. They gotta hurry up and drink if they want to beat the stupid Czech Republic.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Are there any competitive drinking events on TV? If not, why the hell not?
- vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No doubt. I'm waaaaaaaaaay above the average apparently, so I'm doing my part. But! I'm going to add more to my weekly "diet" as a result of this article.
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -32/+1The only reason why we're so low on the list, is because our population is so small. If they took population into account, we'd be way up there for sure.
- tcpik, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4they're not even a real country anyway
- moft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@Dumbledorito : there's a reason for that.
some time in the 80's, there was some sort of variety show in Australia where they had a yard-glass competition between some dirty bearded guy and a woman - the woman won, and while she was being presented with the award, the bearded guy stumbled into the background and did a marvellous chunder. I think the owner of the station (Kerry Packer) was watching when they re-ran parts of it for a 'best moments on australian tv' segment and famously rang up the station and quoted: "get this ***** of my station"
If anyone has footage of this please upload to the net and name it something sensible. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Given what's shown on TV (especially Fox) these days, I hardly see how that's a bad idea...
- Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52,3 and 4 don't surprise me. I always thought those 3 have quite well known beer drinking reputations. But Id never heard of the Czech Republic being a huge drinking nation.
@xtremesniper
Its per captia, which means per person. - xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3"Its per captia, which means per person."
Ah, I definitely missed that detail. My bad. - johnlandes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27We don't need to drink as much as the US since our beer is stronger.
- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree guys, this is ridiculous.
/leaves for the beer and wine store.
Yes, I'm serious. Right now. - oogee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Canadians were too hammered to complete the survey, I think. It's the only way this makes sense . . .
- Domiko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15S'ok, our beer is better up here anyway.
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Canadians get less vacation days per year than Europeans. Also, cold weather is not necessarily conducive to beer drinking (less BBQs, more hard liquor instead, etc.)
- gimpbully, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@nixonrichard
gotta take whiskey consumption into account, supplements some of the beer consumption. - gavroche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Gizza
Pilsner origins from the city Pilsner in Czech Republic
Oh and all those Canadians points come from Quebec for sure - gavroche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, after looking it up I was wrong, Yukoners are first in Canada followed by Qubeckers.
- gavroche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Blast! Digg should let you more time to edit. But heres interesting facts about Beer and Canada

The show you are thinking of that Packer pulled off the air was Australia's Naughtiest Home Videos, a spin of off Australias Funniest Home Videos (same format as the USA) but with an adult edge.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia's_Naughtiest_Home_Videos
I'm pretty sure the yard glass incident was part of another show though. - Ru55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ nixonrichard
Damn straight! I can't believe those lousy Czechs beat us! I'm calling on all Irish diggers reading this to up your beer consumption this year so we can show those Czechs who's boss!
I'm not gonna lie to you guys, it's going to get a little messy, but it'll be worth it in the end! - MyNameIsJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Think I figured out why Canadians are slacking.
"52 percent of the retail price of beer is taxes, the third-highest tax rate in the world behind Norway and Finland." - defrex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, I think our pot-smoking must cut into our beer numbers.
- schreiber, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Further proof that Europe is better.
kill me- floridiot2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Kind of related.. I don't regularly drink Guinness, but is it normal for each bottle to have an ice cube floating at the top?
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That's the nitrogen bladder. Delicious nitrogen.
- tyywebb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm moving to the Czech Republic _immediately_
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Europe has all the cool stuff dammit. Fashion, cars, beer/wine.

- nazuraki, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13No. Scotland is a country.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+72No it isn't. It's mythological, like Narnia or Wyoming.
- BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3or like Chicago

- Caps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Gizza: Sorry dude that was me.. I can't keep drinking at work...
- stonedgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Only number 4? I've got to cut back on the spirits and get my home-brew going again. Though this list probably doesn't count home-brew
- maxcelcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Damn, you'd think with those two litre (or is it three?) stubbies they have in the northern territory, we'd be waaaaay up there... Not to mention my friend the home brewer with the collection of kegs...
Pint anyone? - rsdouglas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well I guess the Aussies have to beat South Africa at something...
:D - jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To all those who are disappointed at Australia's ranking, I'm sorry. Usually I do drink beer, but tonite, I seem to be rather intoxicated on sweet sweet bundy rum. I did try to down a few amber ales, however, once you start on rum, there's no swapping and changing. I like my toilet white, not the colour of my last 4 meals.
On another note, does anyone one know where they got these stats from? Does it come from beer sales, or was it a survey type thingy? If it doesn't includdde home-brew, then they're excluding at least 30% of the beer my mates and I drink. (NB, 30% is a random figure I pulled out of my drunken skull).
- Billiam627, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1213th? I can speak for the University at Albany when I say that we are feverishly doing our part to raise this embarrassing ranking.
- archlich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2feel free to invite me
- flanagonzales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I've never been prouder to live in Ireland.
- SeismicShock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10i would think you would be more enraged that the filthy czechs were besting you
- flanagonzales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, because of recent economic prosperity, we now have the choice to drown our sorrows in superfluous spending. Take that, Czechs!
- MrLeEx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11hahahaha australia is 4th
- AReallyGoodName, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah i feel ashamed that we're only 4th.
- Obliviate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8In Australia's defence, we also have very cheap, high quality, readily available wine to drink as well. I'd suggest that the Czech Republic's currency exchange prohibits the purchase of cheap, quality wine from their neghbours but then again they'd also be very heavy vodka drinkers. When I was in Prague, a pint of 12% alcohol Lager was less than $1 Aussie. And it tasted damn good. If you ask for "Light" beer you get a beer that is light in colour. They have no low-alchohol beer, but they do have alcohol-free beer for the kiddies.
And for all those who have no idea about the Czech republic's beer traditions, there is a town called Pilzn there. It's where they invented the Pilsner style of beer and one particular brand you may know of, something called Budweiser.
And for the Canadian that tried to make the excuse that it's too cold to drink beer in Canada, well it's pretty cold in the Czech Republic too mate. - VermiciousKnid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Australia used to be #1 in the 80's. then the government launched their "life be in it" campaign which eventually brought us down to #9. guess we've gone back to our old ways
- HardSide, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5pfft...beer. where my vodka?
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Vodka is for people who want to commit suicide through their liver. Beer, however, is a cheerful beverage.
- MasterChi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3"In the "vodka belt" countries of Northern and Eastern Europe, vodka is historically the most popular alcoholic beverage, more popular than beer or wine, and consumed in quantities far above levels that are common in the rest of the world.
While there is no universal definition of the "vodka belt", it is commonly thought to consist of Scandinavia; Baltic countries; former USSR ( excluding islamic Middle Asia and traditional wine countries such as Georgia and Moldavia ); sometimes Poland; possibly other Eastern European countries."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:VodkaBelt.png - CupBeEmpty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I only respect per capita maps of whiskey consumption
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@urusai
I have to disagree. Though I prefer a cold beer to vodka, it has to be the best damn hard liquor there is. It's like chicken - goes with everything you can mix it with. Except for beer. - jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ diulei
I must agree, vodka and beer are not the flavour sensation that you would enjoy. The Carlton Brewery in Oz actually tried to release a version of Carlton Cold with a vodka shot in it. Yes, it got you plenty hammered. But damn, it tasted like arse piss. "It's like a party in my mouth, and everyone's throwing up".
- pants428, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7the czech rebublic, rocking it out with the pilsner urquell... now that is some good beer...
- madmax85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Budvar is the best czech beer.
- crillz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10woo! Ireland's 2nd! Another reason why Ireland kicks everyone's ass (excluding the Czech Republic THIS TIME)
Abú Éire! - safetybuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Oooh it's nice to be Czech...beer is cheaper than coca-cola there *thumb*
- Sujay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I just love that wikipedia has all this info.
- DSGalvin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Czech Republic huh.... I didn't see that one coming
(I guess their is a lot I didn't know about the Czech Republic) - nurall, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3hey guys, ive been doing my part. the rest of you slackers better start gettin' your drink on.
USA USA USA USA - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2did someone ***** with this wiki? the description says we're #13, but that's not what it says on this page....
- Billiam627, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, Drjlighbearer, I was tempted to Digg that up just from the sheer audacity of that hijack.
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I blame the drinking age.
- lookitsbeige, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I blame crappy domestic beer.
- AuAndCs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i blame both
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If by crappy domestic beer you mean Bud, Coors, Miller, than yes. Disgusting.
There are good beers like Sam Adams and Yuengling though. - jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally, I blame the schools.
- pampusik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ah yes... Czechs drink beer like most anybody else drinks lemonade. I'm shocked Slovakia is so far behind...
- lookitsbeige, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2bravo...bravo...
- azzageddi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Since the source is Kirin, they must be a bit depressed that Japan is #32, down from 31 in 2003. And I'm surprised--the folks I hang with in Japan drink plenty of beer.
- 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I would like to point out that while we may not have the highest consumption per capita, we do have the 2nd highest consumption overall (next to China, and we all know they pop. haxxor). AMERICA, F*** YEAH!
- bkeller81, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I've done my part to help out the United States tonight how about you?
- gpcprog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You know, Im from Czech Republic, and I can tell you, people do drink a lot there.
(plus there is no non-sense law saying people under 21 can't drink) - iakupo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Woo Australia number 4... Duffman!
- tatsel74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1*****!!!! Mexico cant be that low, cuz we drink beer instead of water, water isnt healthy anymore. Corona anyone????
- bonecones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not *****.
I live in Brazil and I know how much beer I see people drinking everyday.
I think countries like ours are so low on that list because the majority of the population can't afford to drink beer.
Here beer is quite expensive considering the average income. Poor people here do drink a lot of hard liquor tough (mostly cachaca).
I, however, am trying my best to raise our ranking.
/drunk
//hooray beer.
- bonecones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not *****.
- fremeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6god damn aussies being 4th, i blame though god damn wine drinkers. At least the countries on top of us have good beer. We need to lower the drinking age to 16 to catch up!
I wonder if they tallied it up.- Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha, i would be willing to bet that lowering the drinking age to 16 wouldn't make a difference at all. In fact it my lower our ranking because now the kids below 18 won't feel like they're rebelling.
- jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Perhaps not lowering the drinking age, but how about if we included under age drinkers in the stats...? O maybe that would just show a higher consumption of goon and passion pop?
- mcwizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6to settle it I think we all need to have a drinking contest
- yanivalfasy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4BEERFEST!
- metalica77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DAS BOOT DAS BOOT!!!!
I'm Russian if this would be a vodka contest we would win :)
- udontsay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"This is a list of countries ordered by annual per capita consumption of beer, as of 2009."
WTF does "as of 2009" ???
I'm only in 19th place so I'm not so drunk that it actually makes sense that someone could run this using stats from the future. - digitydigtydo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This makes you think, I just wish that there was more info as to the math behind these numbers. I mean the US is in 13th but I have visited there many times and they don't have too many real beers there. All I have every seen were what they call "lite" beer ... it looks like piss and tastes like water, and it was only 2.9% alcohol so a liter of that is really only 1/3 a liter of beer.
I am going to the bar, have to improve our average.- david630, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4try some ***** micro brews, America has tons of kick ass beers.
- david630, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Having lived in a few of those countries America, Ireland, Belgium and south Korea i got to say Koreans drink the most though they drink soju and not beer. Where I live its not uncommon to see business men passed out on the street any and every day of the week
- Obliviate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can I get a traineeship?
- yanivalfasy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If I lived on Sealand, it would have the highest for sure.
- autocracy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Why the Czechs? Well, among other things its cheaper to buy a beer in Prague than it is to buy bottled water. Gambrinus also is an awesome tasting beer. I'm sad there is no Gambrinus in the US.
- scoult01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Australia represent!
- wageslave1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1shut your mouth chav.
- andrewa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Do a similar test for the states in the US. Portland, OR. FTW! McMenamins!
- Dev17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good Job Ireland. In fairness though a lot of people in Ireland drink stout over beer. Then again spirits like vodka would be more popular in Poland and Russia and bourbon and tequila in the US. Tips glass to Czech Republic.
- discochew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pansies need to stop drinking Mike's and Smirinov Ice and man up!
- Obliviate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm pretty sure Australia still has the highest per capita in any city in the world - Darwin. You know America, that place Crocodile Dundee is from. I think they have a lot of spare time.
- tyywebb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you Irish ancestors!
*calls AA* - lostradamus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since Canadian beer is twice as strong as American beer does that move us up a few spots?
- jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you raise a good point. These stats don't mention anything of alcohol percentage. If America is 13 (or whatever), but the majority of beer drunk in America is 3%ish alcohol (feel free to correct me), then should that be taken into account?
I'm always amused by a "keg party" where all the hard-core drinkers are getting stupid drunk off light beer.
Though in the yanks' defence, I have seen some put away a whole lot of whiskey/bourbon.
- jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you raise a good point. These stats don't mention anything of alcohol percentage. If America is 13 (or whatever), but the majority of beer drunk in America is 3%ish alcohol (feel free to correct me), then should that be taken into account?
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they should count wisconsin seperately, i think it would honestly rate at about 15
wisconsin drinks a hell of a lot of beer, but also consumes 90 or so % of the brandy produced yearly.
At a bar in california the bartender cut us off at 2 drinks an hour until we mentioned being from wisconsin. - colbyrott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01/2 Czech,1/2 German, that's a damn good average! I do not disappoint. Drinking a 12 year Macallan neat right now.
- Draconous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dang....the US is 13th? I'm going to do my part and start drinking right now
- xonecas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Portugal, so small, so drunk...
- ray901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and primed for rugby tours....
- tigerjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not surprising that South Korea is near the bottom. In a country where liquor (soju) is cheaper than water let alone beer why drink anything else?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soju - counterstriker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there is no way this is right! Ireland always has been and always will be #1 when it come to drinking beer.
- fancypantscz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favorite part is that the Czechs are not just out drinking the world, they are out drinking the world by wide margin. 2nd place Ireland is closer to Austria in 5th place than it is to Czech.
- eimersaufen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hooray, place 5 for Austria :)
But I'm not really surprised since our drinking age for beer and wine is 16... - mudgie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is just absoloute proof that that ***** movie "BeerFest" was propaganda! :D
- ashquatok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah Australia.

We may not drink the most beer as a nation, but we do boast the best: Sam Adams Boston Lager- ainmosni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sorry, but I call BS, the only reason I'm even replying to this is that a lot of americans think you have the best everything. I even heard americans say they had the best cheese while I've tasted what you call cheese there and trust me it doesn't even register as cheese here... I must admit I haven't tasted Sam Adams but you must admin that in the food and drink category Europe beats out the US quite easily. Not to say your country has no merit but food and drinks aren't them. ;)
- jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WooOOoOO Cheese in a can!
How many levels can one thing be wrong on.
- darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hahah I bet Australia would have a lot more. We just are so *****/lazy that we wouldn't fill out the surveys! :D
