- pussnuts, on 09/21/2009, -2/+64Did anyone read the article? This happened in 1993. There was a massive effort after the fall of USSR to prevent nuclear material from falling into the wrong hands. This find in Kazakhstan was 1322 pounds of HIGHLY ENRICHED uranium. Before you start slinging words out like "stole" consider what was actually going on here. A super power had just fallen and left all of its toys up for grabs. The USA did the right thing here. Don't bash them for this.
- Fishn2, on 09/21/2009, -1/+30Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium.
Other countries have inferior potassium. - TheTaoOfBill, on 09/21/2009, -6/+31*INSERT BORAT QUOTE HERE*
- twiztidsinz, on 09/21/2009, -3/+26Screw you and your "facts"!
We're bashing the United Socialist States of AmeriKKKa here!!
/s - Georgy, on 09/21/2009, -0/+12I don't know but you'd think half a ton of uranium would cost more
- pathouston22, on 09/21/2009, -6/+18Great article. Reminds you why the world does need at least one super power trying to do good...if we hadn't bought this, most likely some more folks would have nukes.
- irinotecan, on 09/21/2009, -0/+9I remember when this happened. The deal was we would permanently bury it and not use it, so as to not piss off Russia that we stole "their" nuclear material.
So, no, this wasn't a "great deal" for us, we paid to keep it out of the hands of other countries; that's all we got for $27 million. Perhaps that *is* a bargain considering Al Qaeda couldn't use it to nuke one of our cities instead, but still, we're not making bombs with it, nor are we using it as fuel for our reactors. - fack0, on 09/21/2009, -2/+11You're assuming that all the other materials, work hours, and electronics that go into making these devices costs $0.
- norman619, on 09/21/2009, -1/+10I don't see how this is bad at all.
- fack0, on 09/21/2009, -1/+9I believe the word "stole" in an earlier comment was used to reflect their astonishment at the low price and not that we shouldn't have taken them.
- ivan423, on 09/21/2009, -1/+8Kazakhstan greatest country in the world.

From junction with the testes to tip of its face! - IphtashuFitz, on 09/21/2009, -0/+7Read the article much? This occurred back in 1993 & 1994.
- smashTasker, on 09/21/2009, -9/+16Only 27 million? They should replace the "removed" in the article title to "stole".
- inactive, on 09/21/2009, -0/+7Did you read the article? It took 3 fully loaded C5 Galaxy planes (one of the largest airplanes in the world) to transport all that. Enriched uranium is highly unstable if you get a chain reaction going. It took them months to pack it all into right containers and make it safe to transport in special mobile labs.
- BikeRidinMan, on 09/21/2009, -2/+8Sounds like a good deal to me.
- pablocblanco, on 09/21/2009, -1/+7I just want to say, in all seriousness, how proud I am of all of you for the nearly complete lack of Borat quotes in these comments. Truly Astounding. Thank you.
- inactive, on 09/21/2009, -3/+9"The Iranians and the Iraqis were casting about for material to build nuclear bombs."
What, I thought they just wanted nuclear material for "peaceful" purposes, how can this be?! - startsomething7, on 09/21/2009, -1/+6Throw the Jew down the well. So my country can be free.
- Nona9000, on 09/21/2009, -3/+7Half a ton of Uranium for only $27 million? $27K per pound? Hmm...
- FieldAnonymouse, on 09/21/2009, -0/+4We got a discount for buying in bulk I guess.
- TheRealMisterd, on 09/21/2009, -0/+4yes, it's just paper
- XorpheusX, on 09/21/2009, -0/+4Thank you for getting that out of the way ahead of time.
I fear it will not stop anyone, though. - macslut, on 09/21/2009, -0/+4Wait, I'm confused, is this Bush's fault or Obama's?
/more s - BotchaMcCoola, on 09/21/2009, -1/+4Are you serious? With the US military occupying two of their neighbors they would have to be retarded not to want nuclear deterence. I suspect they already have it though.
- DulcetTone, on 09/21/2009, -0/+3600 kg. Nice score. But what of the 1200 metric ton total they spoke of? How much of that is being sanely handled, and by whom?
- Greengoo, on 09/21/2009, -2/+5Like World War II.
- greggerm, on 09/21/2009, -0/+3Anyone else suddenly imagining the very end (warehouse) of Indiana Jones/Raiders of the Lost Ark?
- MrAwesomeMan, on 09/21/2009, -1/+3Now if only we could get our hands on all that potassium...
- tange1, on 09/21/2009, -0/+2I dont presume to know what happened to it but:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megatons_to_Megawatts ... - monkiboi, on 09/21/2009, -0/+2Great article on one page: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ...
- BotchaMcCoola, on 09/21/2009, -0/+2@Thuktun. I don't think they want to follow Saddam Hussein's strategy either. Anyway they have so far avoided getting attacked by either the US or Israel.
- ChikenShit, on 09/22/2009, -1/+2they did it with lots of money, now khazakstan is going to import more and more of that ***** for USA to purchase
- anonymousmedic, on 09/21/2009, -0/+1Use it to take over savage brown people countries who practice their heathen faiths for their oil?
/sarcasm, but sadly a mentality of many diggers who think the US is the big, bad evil supervillian. - inactive, on 09/21/2009, -2/+3Wasn't aware you could get Uranium from Sam's Club!
- Randomheroz, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1We should have a better idea in about 5 - 15 years or so when we get to see what kind of cancer and birth defect rates they have there.
- BrBybee, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1Uranium's a hell of a drug.
- anonymousmedic, on 09/21/2009, -0/+1I'll take it if you don't want it.
- MWeather, on 09/21/2009, -1/+2You got a problem with nuclear power, hippie? Save it for your Greenpeace buddies.
- inactive, on 09/22/2009, -0/+1Baddigga, are you really suggesting that Al Qaeda does not have the ability to strike at the US or any US interests? In case you have been alseep for a while, they have been doing that for about 20 years now.
- SarcasticPirate, on 09/21/2009, -0/+1We took off for shipping and handling.
- anonymousmedic, on 09/21/2009, -0/+1They do. The Majority of Nuclear material from Decomissioned warheads is now powering nuclear reactors all over the world.
- sndream, on 09/21/2009, -0/+1They should try to buy Russian's uranium too.
- ProKid, on 09/21/2009, -0/+1So did we get a good deal on that?
- Thuktun, on 09/21/2009, -0/+1Hope they didn't put it all in the same shipping crate.
- DulcetTone, on 09/21/2009, -0/+1Well, if you want something worth being fearful of, this is a grand opportunity!
