How Big is Alaska? Amazing Picture of Alaska Superimposed over the US [PIC]
usmarshals.gov — Most people don't understand just how large Alaska really is. At 586,400 square miles, Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas, the 2nd largest state, and is larger than all but 18 of the countries in the world.

- apex32, on 10/10/2007, -2/+123It's also interesting that all that land was purchased from Russia for $7,200,000 in 1867 and was seen as a waste of money at the time. They called it Seward's folly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seward%27s_Folly
- faithfreedom, on 10/10/2007, -17/+5How about reselling it to Canada ? We offer 10 millions. Is it a good deal or not ?
- Jorlwind, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Well, where ever Seward is now, he's laughing his ass off and shaming the doubters.

- cyclingco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0important thing to know if your name is daedalus. didn't everyone see this in their elementary atlases? another interesting fact is that muslims in denver pray to the northeast. work your head around that one

- sanman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Time to go to war in the Arctic, man. All that Alaskan coastline is going to have a lot of ocean territory to go with it soon, once Bush ratifies the Law of the Sea Treaty. I hear thar's oil in them thar hills.
- tmbrwolf19, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Stay the ***** out my Ocean. This is between us Canadian's and the Danes.
- sanman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Heh, time for politicians to rename the cafeteria menu again. No more danish with that coffee -- tomorrow it's Freedom Pastries!
But seriously, the Danes better hire a lot of lawyers, because I can't see those pastry-making pansies actually holding any ground with military force. - DustinR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2With your one boat.

- trueshadow21, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2does anyone?
actually a poll says 40 precent of alaskan republicans do, but im proud not to be one of those alaskans
ITS NOT A BIG TRUCK, ITS A SERIES OF TUBES!!!
or my other favorite "last week my staff sent me an internet and i didnt get it tell monday"... the tubes are clogged because it takes a week for an email to be recieved (i think hes just using AOL email) so should we shut the internet down for a while and flush it with draino or somethin? - sarazen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That is a difficult question. One thing that it is important to remember is that Alaska politics are more corrupt that Louisiana politics, and since I came up here from down south I think that is saying something. It is also important to remember that up here, probably a good 1/4 to 1/2 of all the jobs are government jobs, or government funded jobs, be they through the federal government, state or local branches. It may even be as high a 3/4 if you include all the military and related agencies.
Now with all that in mind, I, like many people up here, I hated the bridge to nowhere. It was a project that would have lined the then governor's pocket since the island it was supposed to connect was one where he owns a bunch of property. However, even with that, and the stupid, 'series of tubes' comment, I can't say that I hate Stevens. The other bridge he tried to fund, the one to Juno, would have allowed folks up here to get to their government rep at least a little easier which might help our corruption problem, but that is another rant.
Stevens has done a ton for the state. And by that I mean he has brought in a ton of money and development. I wouldn't be on the Internet right now if it wasn't for Ted Stevens. Yes, it is pork that he has provided, and I do feel like something of a hypocrite because I simultaneously hate and benefit from it. He is able to make these projects happen because he is a senior rep in the congress. With our population being as low as it is, when he goes, the voice for what is important to Alaska will get very faint. And we do still have some problems up here. Lots of things you take for granted don't work the way they should up here, and that is big things like health insurance. Because it costs a premium to set up practice in Alaska, doctors and dentists charge a premium. Even if you have insurance many times the insurance co. won't honor that difference and so you get stuck with all the over-flow charges. Super saver shipping? Unless lower 48 companies ship via the USPS you will pay a premium to get anything delivered. Up here the dollar store is the $1.39 store. I could go on, but the bottom line is that all this tends to stifle natural economic development, at least for now.
Do we really need development up here though? It may be self serving but I would answer yes, at least some. Alaska has a ton valuable mineral resources. You hear about the gold and the oil, but is is jam packed full all kinds of things, from peat, to the huge expanses of forest, to the incredibly rich seas around the coast, which would include a stake in the Northwest Passage if global warming does come to pass. Lots of countries would like to have control of all that. Russia, for example, still loves us and would like to have us back. Perhaps I am being paranoid, or I just see what I want to see, but I think there are certain economic and military reasons that it is good for the US to have and maintain control up here. In order to secure that control we need people in the state, and not just the folks with their finger on the button. So far, Ted Stevens has provided the roads, and military and other development that Alaska needs to stimulate its economy and with his seniority he provides a strong voice to low population state. There is a lot about him politically that I wish were different, but overall I think that he has been more of a benefit than a liability, also he doesn't have much credible competition That may or may not answer your question, but there it is.

- chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -5/+174Perfect. So if global warming does happen and the eastern seaboard is flooded by rising oceans, we can put everyone in Alaska! By then it should be warm enough and have plenty of room. I don't see what everyone is worried about!

- cyclingco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0the percentage of global warming caused by humans is insignificant. it is a political tool used mostly by uber liberals to get elected into office so that they can enact all their other crazy ideas that are less appetizing to the public. think about the immensity of the earth and the factors that affect global climate cycles across thousands of years. humans aren't that significant, and cycles are normal, especially coming off a recent (in terms of the earths lifespan) ice age. why don't you read up on global warming instead of listening to democratic sound bytes.

- dillibob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2honestly he probably has a plan to develop that area somehow. and he's always gotten what the great alaskan people wanted
- billbacon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2As it turns out, Ted Stevens owns a bunch of land on that will sharply rise in value after the highway has been built. It is an obvious case of profiteering on his part but the case has been thrown out against him, and the funds have now been allocated. I believe the project has been funded. Supposedly all earmarks are available to the public. The only problem is that you must request an appointment to view the documents and you may not make copies. You are allowed to take notes. Someone actually did this in the above case and brought it to the publics attention. Makes you wonder how many government earmarks go unnoticed.

- carnagejoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0True, but geographical features near the two poles tend increase in size on rectangular maps rather than decrease.

- spidoman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I see north and West obviously, but am rather confused about how it is furthest east.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I don't think this really counts, but the only way I figure it is this: The Earth is round. If you start on the East coast (in Canada, I guess), then go east, past the Atlantic Ocean, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific, you get to Alaska. Does that count?
- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I believe it has to do with the international date line and the official day starting somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. As long as the Westernmost part of the Aluetian Islands crosses this line it will be the "furthest east".
- spidoman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3stolen from some weird trivia website: To be entirely fair, the international dateline runs west of Alaska, in the Bering Straits. All of Alaska and the Aleutian islands are on the Alaska timezone, which is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. Very technically speaking, Maine is still the eastern extreme of the US. The Aleutian Islands the western extreme.
- x788, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2the international dateline has nothing to do with coordinates, just time. i dont think basing our positioning systems off of a jagged thing like that would make much sense.

- Anemichelix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7 I don't see why we need to digg a picture of a state, most people do in fact know how big it is, and if they don't they can look on a map.

- Anzat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I moved here a couple months ago, and I'm amazed how short the long distances seem. I drove 280 miles both ways just to fish for the weekend and it felt like driving 60 miles back in the lower 48. The driving is so much less stressful. No traffic lights or towns to go through, no figuring out where to turn -- from any given spot there are only two places to go, "that way" or "the other way." The breathtaking scenery make most long drives a pleasure. And there are waysides all along the highways to pull off and camp or sleep in your car.
The weather here in Fairbanks this summer is the best I've ever seen anywhere. Day after day of blue skies and puffy white clouds, highs in the 60s to low 80s, and low humidity. In late June and early July it's light enough to play sports at 1am with no lights. Even now in August we only have a couple hours of real nighttime.
In other words, the Simpsons movie pretty much nailed it.- RedViper1999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What till you experience the Alaska winter. Nothing is cooler then driving around on the same streets as snowmachines (snowmobiles).

Last year it was pretty smoky because everything was burning around town.
This year it's been raining too frequently.
Dont know about winter, you get tired of snow pretty soon
- CarolFil, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4Canada is still bigger in land size then the U.S. Get over it.

- UberLamer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ummm - somebody needs to tell the CIA then. They can't be wrong, can they?

"world's third-largest country by size (after Russia and Canada) "
It's almost the same size though. Perhaps you could invade another count.... nevermind.

- Hubris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was wondering when somebody would say something like that. Out of patriotic pride, Americans will digg you down, and Canadians will digg you up - regardless of the actual facts. Both like to think of themselves as 'large' countries, and think of it as an attack to suggest that they are less than something else.

- HanSolo69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2the first time in the title when it said this was a picture, i wasn't sure i believed it. thanks for clearing it up at the end. you saved many lives today.
- rac3r5, on 10/10/2007, -7/+16I wish Alaska was part of Canada... now how cool would that be...
- mdeppi01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12That's exactly what Canada needs.. more cold, desolate, unused land.
- Carsonauto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Norhern Canadia is Tundra. Barren, desolate land. Alaska, is in the same weather region as the BC Rainforests. Alaska is far from barren.
- Kazanoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Anything to catch Russia
- bubba9999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Russia will probably claim Canada as part of its geography soon.

- Cellulose, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Of course, the creator of that map didn't bother to label the map its projection... so the graphic could be horribly distorted (though it LOOKS correct) and the "air miles" is an ambigous measurement. Is this how many frequent flyer miles I get for that route? Is it a straight line path on a projected map? Is it a great circle distance? Lousy map.
Lacks any of the necessary information to critically assess the map...- TrevorBelmont, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I thought the same thing. Apparently whoever buried you're comment was offended by your assertion that the Earth is not flat.
- moosepile, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The north is gorgeous, if you get a chance, have a go at it.
Obligatory Canada should have Alaska, or at least the penninsula. BC is all screwed up! Don't worry, we'll keep out those pesky Russkies after we get them out of Santa's house. - johney5, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1this should have never ever made front page.

- TonyTheTerrible, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1the size shown in comparison to the US is wrong, if it was right then the distance from california to new york would be alittle over 2,200 miles
burried as inaccurate- qualish, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Distance between LA and NYC is a little less than 2500 *air* miles. Not road miles, which I'm assuming you were confusing. http://www.airtimetable.com/Air_mile_calculator.htm This calculator will tell you air mile distances between major cities around the world.
- shabuzen, on 10/10/2007, -7/+0Who cares? Alaska is a devoid of civilization except for a few eskimo tribes.

- John Hodgman - anarchytv, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Alaska wasn't Russia's to sell. Like just about everything else in North America, it was ripped off from the indigenous population. Kind of like two robbers coming into your home, and one saying, "I own this television!" and the other saying "Great, I'll give you this beer I got out of the refrigerator for it, we'll shake on it, and its legit in a court of law!" Well, their court of law, anyway.
- hudef, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Well, the indigenous population type people weren't doing jack with the place. I for one welcome our non-indigenous overlords!
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Except in this case if you arrested the robbers, they would turn up in court as the Judge and Prosecutor.
- trueshadow21, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1yeah, but we white men can claim what ever land we want and sell it afterward, dirty unevolved native men cant possibly have any concepts of ownership!
