- GiggleStick, on 03/12/2008, -5/+4It's an education thing. Here's how to explain it to you:
Latin Mother *****, Do You Speak It?
Or try this:
http://www.google.com/search?q=semper+fi- ciaran036, on 03/13/2008, -1/+1No I don't speak Latin that would be a ridiculous language to study. If I had have studied it, this would have been the first time I'd ever have had to used it. And it would have been an education thing had my school offered that subject for study, which they didn't because it's a waste of time.
- MudMan69, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Yeah, studying Latin would be a complete waste of time because there are no languages today that are based on it.
idiot. - ciaran036, on 03/14/2008, -1/+1Why would a school choose to allow the study of a language that is only the base for other languages? That's why they don't teach Latin any more where I live and that's why your the idiot.
- MudMan69, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Yeah, studying Latin would be a complete waste of time because there are no languages today that are based on it.

- cheezzwizz, on 03/12/2008, -1/+10Semper Fidelis is the motto for the US Marine Corps. It mean ALWAYS FAITHFUL
- happyseamonster, on 03/13/2008, -1/+3If they had fidelity, they would have refused the orders to kill innocent civilians in an illegal invasion of a sovereign country.
- ddfall, on 03/13/2008, -1/+1Freedom isn't free. It's a debt that these Marines and others pay that can never be re-paid.
- CryRightardCry, on 03/13/2008, -1/+2Maybe for some other wars, but let's be honest.
We are not fighting for American freedom in Iraq.
It's a political thing, not a "freedom" thing. We were in NO danger from Iraq.- ddfall, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I meant in general.
- CryRightardCry, on 03/13/2008, -1/+2Maybe for some other wars, but let's be honest.

- openthink, on 03/12/2008, -1/+55these images transcend politics. imo need more of them distributed so public can at least have a little better sense (visual and visceral) of the real people affected and devastated by war. they're not partisan -- the photos or the victims. they're stark, raw & real (it's why they won awards)...
- tonaros, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4That's why I dugg this.
- booksgirl, on 03/13/2008, -0/+0I heard that the book version of the story, accompanied by the amazing photos, is coming out in May-- it's called Final Salute by Jim Sheeler. I hope a lot of people read this beautiful and heartbreaking story and see these photos-- it's so important for people to understand exactly who is being affected by this war. It's easy to blur over the numbers and names of the brave people who have died over there, and forget about the families dealing with their losses. Whether you're for or against the war, it's so important for us to understand what the costs are in our own backyards.

- diwanifa, on 03/12/2008, -2/+20This is an amazing story, Todd Heisler is a fantastic photographer (was with the Rocky Mountain News when he shot this, now with the NYT) though this was shot over two years ago and made the rounds on digg a month or two ago. But oh well, as a fellow photojournalist, I'm glad to see some non photographers truly take notice of great work. Sometimes I feel the only people who like photography is other photographers.

- Hotrox, on 03/12/2008, -9/+21I really like how you used such a somber article to put out your well-articulated thoughts on the current POTUS. What you've done here will send shockwaves through the system and anyone who believe in or supported Bush before will now be able to see through the lies. You sir are the pinnacle of class.
On a serious note, why is he being dugg up? Absolutely tasteless.- cJw314, on 03/12/2008, -13/+4I suspect it's because if Bush weren't office, we may not have lost so many of these young men and women.
blah blah, more terrorist attacks, blah blah... false flag.- ChristNewsWatch, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0What is unfolding... is much deeper then Bush & Cheney.... they are the scapegoats, not the "shot callers"
- djAnakin, on 03/12/2008, -3/+5Because Digg is overwhelmed by immature teenagers who lack the brainpower to come up with something more than a swear-word.

- ODwyer02, on 03/12/2008, -18/+3For the longevity of the U.S. as a sovereign nation. Without us there China and or Russia would be sucking up every ounce of fuel in Iraq for themselves and demolishing the U.S. as a power. This is not a "war on terror," but rather a war to prolong our status as "The World Power."
- Bluedragon305, on 03/12/2008, -13/+6For something you will NEVER be able to comprehend.

- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2While these men know what they were fighting for Fallujah was such a waste. The citizens had left, all that remained in the city was an entrenched inurgency. Falujah should have been a hardly remarkable air-strike but politics made our soldiers fight house to house.
- apokalum, on 03/12/2008, -5/+8Ask yourself the same thing..after all, you will die as well.
- radink360, on 03/12/2008, -27/+19This would never have to happen if our government wasn't run by a bunch of greedy evil pieces of *****. We aren't defending freedom here, we are fighting to make some rich guys even richer. When is it going to stop?
- Bluedragon305, on 03/12/2008, -10/+6So the government was greedy and evil during the American Revolution? During WWI and WWII? Correct me if I am mistaken but soldiers and Marines died in those wars too.
- radink360, on 03/12/2008, -8/+10Do you not know how to read? I didn't say all wars. Just this one. asshat.
- richporter, on 03/12/2008, -5/+6That's a ***** excuse to single someone out. You can't compare the American Revolution to the Iraq war.

- nesibus, on 03/12/2008, -31/+47I'm so tired of seeing people complain about bush and all this blah blah blah every time a soldier dies.
What do you think exactly is going to happen when you join the military and have to go to war....run through fields of flowers and chase bunnies?
You are not paying any respect to the family and the fallen soldier by opening your whining little mouth every time they die serving in uniform.
Grow up.- dhVyse, on 03/12/2008, -20/+34If Bush didn't get elected, there would be almost 4000 U.S. Soldiers who died, alive today. Simple as that my friend.
I'm not even going to mention how many Iraqis, Journalists, and Private Contractors that would be alive as well.- ODwyer02, on 03/12/2008, -5/+8But Bush got elected. Twice. Why speculate what could have been and focus on what will be!?
- Enasni1212, on 03/12/2008, -3/+11Because we don't want the same thing to happen again!
- cawpin, on 03/12/2008, -12/+4No, because almost that many would have died from accidents and health issues.
- wrxpert, on 03/12/2008, -9/+6Your not very intelligent are you?

- wrxpert, on 03/12/2008, -9/+6Your not very intelligent are you?
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -3/+2That is absolutely wrong. Before Bush was even running for the presidency Bill Clinton signed a document making regime change in Iraq a matter of National Policy. The war was coming one way or another.
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -2/+2Not surprisingly buried. I am surprised not to see the "B-b-b-but Clinton!" idiocy. For those of you that think George Bush is somehow solely responsible for starting the Iraq war here, read and be enlightened. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Liberation_Act
The road to war started in 1998 with the nearly unanimous approval of congress.

- elint6, on 03/12/2008, -7/+9What's wrong in trying to prevent even more families from having to go through what these families have? Have some vision, Grow Up.
- sny1120, on 03/12/2008, -9/+4It is really simple.
The soldiers join the military to serve the country.
But it is the president that decides to go to war, not the soldiers.
Bush Sr. chose not to invade Iraq and the casualty was minimal.
Bush Jr. chose to invade Iraq and now more soldiers died compared to the 9/11 casualties which he claimed Iraq was responsible for and countless other lies.
The president is ultimately responsible for every death in a war.- CabesMojo, on 03/12/2008, -4/+6Yes because it was only bush, lets just look right past the fact that it got majority votes in congress. Get off your soapbox and off this article.
- Updesh, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1If things had gone well do you think Bush would be saluting the whole congress. Soldiers sign up to serve thier country, but they don't need to die for the pride and stupidity of a paper soldier. Bush and Cheney have never served either in the armed forces or this country in any meaningful way. Ghandhi said - "never give an order you would not take", and I think we are all pretty sure those cowards wouldn't sign up for the death and misery they happily spread
- CabesMojo, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Bush was actually a pilot in the Air National Guard, so he did serve in the military even though he never saw combat.

- sny1120, on 03/12/2008, -1/+5He is the "Commander In Chief"
If he says the war is over everybody goes home...guess what happens?
EVERYBODY GOES HOME- djAnakin, on 03/12/2008, -2/+3The problem is, we leave now, and Iraq becomes more of a ***** than it already is. Look at the reason Afghanistan became a haven for Al Qaeda. The Soviets pulled out, and so did we... instead of offering help, we just left. If we do the same in Iraq, the same thing will happen.
Should we have gone into Iraq? No! But we're there now, and we owe it to the people of Iraq to stay and give it our best effort to expel these fundamentalists, who, by the way, mostly come from other countries to fight jihad.
The world won't know peace with hugs and puppy dog fur. It will take the eradication of those who try to force others into believing in what they believe in.

- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Bush Sr. Invaded Irag but didn't finish the job.
Bill Clinton bombed Iraq and didn't finish the job but did make regime change in Iraq national policy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Liberation_Act).
Bush Jr. Invaded Iraq and faced what we feared.
Facts are hard to swallow, Iraq is not new. - helimeef, on 03/13/2008, -0/+0So if some soldier trips on a rock and hits his head (and kills him), George Bush must have done it?
Wow Bush must be smarter than I thought.
- CabesMojo, on 03/12/2008, -4/+6Yes because it was only bush, lets just look right past the fact that it got majority votes in congress. Get off your soapbox and off this article.
- shortysmyname, on 03/12/2008, -9/+1They join the military believing that they will be of some service, not to die! Have you talked to the families of fallen service members? Somehow I would think outrage at their soldier's death would hardly be something that they would not appreciate. I have a feeling most of them would be feeling pretty outraged too.
- djAnakin, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2You have no idea what you're talking about. I personally know two families who have lost son's to the Iraq war and while they mourn for the loss, none of them play the blame game. They accept the fact that their boys went to war, knowing full well what to expect. They accept that their sons died in service to their country.
- wheresthevan, on 03/12/2008, -1/+9You don't sign up to be tossed into a mindless war which was acted upon in haste, with false facts, and has gone on long after "Mission Accomplished"...
Bush has lead these men and women in this war with carelessness... Every single day that goes by, while he's tap dancing on stage and cracking jokes... men and women are dying and families are being scarred for life...
Soldiers lives are not toys, nor are the lives of the Iraqi people...- djAnakin, on 03/12/2008, -4/+2That mission was accomplished. Saddam's regime fell. Mission accomplished. No one said "terrorism is no more! We win!"
- carlvjack, on 03/12/2008, -4/+0Spoken like a true armchair patriot
- djAnakin, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2I did my time to my country. Have you done yours?
- dhVyse, on 03/12/2008, -20/+34If Bush didn't get elected, there would be almost 4000 U.S. Soldiers who died, alive today. Simple as that my friend.

- xaryss, on 03/12/2008, -2/+22Wow, picture 16 was a real tear jerker for me. All of those pictures speak great volumes to the pain that is felt.
- sieteRevueltas, on 03/12/2008, -21/+13Bush and cheney have these soldiers' blood on their hands, simple as.
- mechman, on 03/12/2008, -5/+50As an active-duty military member, I also serve in the Base Honor Guard. Our duties primarily consist of performing military honors to veterans, retirees, and - on a rare and sad occasion - active duty personnel. This includes the three volleys of fire (not necessarily a '21 gun salute' as many perceive), folding of the flag, and the playing of Taps. It's a very humbling opportunity, one that grants me the ability to pay the respects to those passed who served our country and protected our freedom.
I thank all the people that support our military - whether you agree with the war or not, it means the world to the troops if the people they die for can at least give them a 'Thank You'.- neosublime, on 03/12/2008, -1/+14Thank you
- cawpin, on 03/12/2008, -7/+3"not necessarily a '21 gun salute' as many perceive"
There are 7 guns firing aren't there? That would be 21.
And, Thank You.- evil-doer, on 03/12/2008, -5/+1i cant believe he didnt know this.
- Hotrox, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5Alternatively, when some people hear '21 gun salute' they may think that there are 21 guns being fired, as opposed to 7 guns being fired 3 times. Smartass.
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -0/+121 guns are reserved for heads of state and other such people. There are varying levels of gun salute ranging from I think 3 to 21.
- captmorgan555, on 03/12/2008, -1/+3When OIF started i was in San Diego and i had to help setup a hangar shortly after they left on LFW (Landing Forces West). The hangar was to be used as an overflow casualty hangar. They said if the hangar ever got full we would have to start a draft to fill the ranks. That was scary as hell knowing that they were preparing for such an event. Whats even scarier is that the unknowns of invading Iraq were so great we that we had to setup such a hangar.
- ChristNewsWatch, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0With all due respect - thank you for serving!
However, America's leadership is no longer fighting for our "freedom", but rather oil & the coming one-world government... and this is why it is very upsetting to see dead / maimed people on both sides of the fence, because the war in Iraq..... and many "other operations" are not done for just causes, but evil & greed.
Yes, war is justified when it is in defense of our country & closest allies..... but the Iraq "situation" & the ongoing "nation building" occupation of Afghanistan are not good cause, but rather built on disinformation.
- devinroche, on 03/12/2008, -1/+12Word choice on the "haunting." Definitely moving though. The photo of her in bed next to his casket is just too much to fathom.
RIP - bbqsalad, on 03/12/2008, -14/+12All this to keep the money flowing into the pigs pockets and take more from the poor. Thanks a lot Bush and co for destroying this fine country. I hope you all feel the pain these family's feel someday.

- JEAH, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2"It will never be forgotten"
That's very sweet, but most of this country has already forgotten. These pictures and captions, as incredible and important as they are, will probably never seen by most americans. Iraq fatigue has set in and the casualties of war don't sell anymore. - aclockwork3, on 03/12/2008, -3/+12Too bad their sacrifice was for absolutely nothing. They weren't protecting the U.S. or defending our freedom. They weren't doing the things they enlisted for: protecting freedom and american liberty. These soldiers were outright fooled by the U.S. government and forced into killing innocent people. As sad as it is, our government has betrayed their soldiers. All we can do is thank them and ask our government to stop killing our family, friends and soldiers all for partisan ***** and profit.
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -2/+2Lest we never forget those innocent people that blow themselves up on schoolbuses to make a point.
- JoeVet, on 03/12/2008, -17/+6Just remember.....McCain wants to keep the photo ops going. Is it worth the blood of our soldiers to stop the Iraqi civil war?
- Bravesguy18, on 03/12/2008, -1/+5Never use a dead person as a political tool, especially a Marine.

still a beautiful story with emotionally moving pictures. I recommend reading the original article.- tendonut, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1I think it may have been submitted even before that....the title sounds familiar and I've definitely seen these pictures before (along with more) but I want to say it was maybe November...still, very sad pictures..
- Novellaz, on 03/12/2008, -11/+1thought i was going to see some ghost pictures
- MCBAIKO, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1You DID. And I hope they will haunt you until you appreciate the ultimate sacrifice these soldiers and their families are making!
- bobburn, on 03/12/2008, -10/+10How many more men and women will this Administration (and possibly the next) sacrifice? I've lost one close family friend, how many other people will lose their sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends? This unconstitutional, unjustified, unprovoked war needs to end.
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -2/+3The war was constitutional as congress approved.
The war was justified by national policy in 1998. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Liberation_Act
The war was provoked by constant attack on aircraft patrolling the no-fly zone and the games being played with inspections.
Any loss is sad but for you to cheapen the loss with misinformation is wrong.

- NCSUspoon, on 03/12/2008, -4/+3kind of slow, mirror?
- dracostimpy, on 03/12/2008, -16/+1What's wrong with you people... don't you realize the best way to honor the dead is to pretend that they never even existed? Why does Digg hate Amurrikuh?
- sk11, on 03/12/2008, -8/+2Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.
Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And floundering like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori. - andykt, on 03/12/2008, -8/+12Not only do these amazing photographs put a human face on senseless cost of war, but the accompanying stories are heartbreaking. When looking at these photographs, it’s worth remembering George W. Bush narrating his ‘jokey’ slideshow at the 60th annual dinner of the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association in 2004. Over pictures of Bush searching high and low in the Oval Office, he said: "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be here somewhere." "No, no weapons over there,” he said, as looked in the corner of the room. "Maybe under here?" he continued. Bush and the suited and booted journalists of his compliant media laughed it up that night. Funny, eh?
- ciaran036, on 03/12/2008, -3/+5Good point. Not only does he start wars for no reason then he jokes about them...
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -4/+2Your ignorance of the reasons does not mean there were no reasons.
- ciaran036, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I know the reasons - for oil and money!
- noahhoward, on 03/12/2008, -4/+2Your ignorance of the reasons does not mean there were no reasons.

- freezeout, on 03/12/2008, -8/+9breaking the world record for corporate profits doesn't come cheap. Exxon Mobile thanks you, as does KBR
- shortysmyname, on 03/12/2008, -5/+5Truly sad indeed, when a neighbor boy of mine was killed in Iraq I changed. I worked so hard to help get Kerry elected, and now for Obama, in hopes that there would be a way out of this terrible Bush war. Unfortunately these tragedies will not hit home to many and they will continue to deny what is happening around them. God bless all the soldiers and their families.
- MCBAIKO, on 03/13/2008, -0/+0I personally know MANY families who have lost people in this war. I come from a Military town. Unfortunately neither Hillary nor Obama have plans to stop this war immediately. (and DEFINATELY NOT MCCAIN EITHER!) The ONLY CANDIDATE who DOES is Ron Paul! If you truly mean what you say here PLEASE research this for yourself and march with us in Washington DC on June 21st. Let these young heroes not have died in vain!
- alanr19, on 03/12/2008, -11/+4Isnt taking these photos illegal in the US? They were banned in the interests of freedom or something.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5Taking photos without permission of the family is not authorized. That's why photos aren't allowed at Dover AFB.

George S. Patton- thegarse, on 03/12/2008, -4/+2Probably why Patton was highly criticized. BS comment, they're not robots.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 03/12/2008, -1/+3You are correct, our military is made up of men and women who joined of their own free will.

- ScipiosLegion, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1My Uncle is the buisness editor for the Rocky Mountain News, and took me on a tour of their offices. They have some massive photographs by this guy on the walls and the actual pulitzer awards themselves. It was very interesting.

To you I dedicate this song:
"One By One" by Alter Bridge, i think it truly defines what you men and women were made of
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3glbA6jzOJc - BrotherMonk, on 03/12/2008, -2/+3Every person in America needs to see these pictures. Images such as these need to be on the front page of every newspaper and the top story of every newscast. People need to understand the true cost of the war(s) in the Middle East.
I'm still sitting here in my office over lunch tearing up.
My heartfelt thanks to the men and women who serve and their families... - ClevelandBrown, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1Powerful imagery...

- Locnar, on 03/12/2008, -2/+2as i clicked on the link to look at the first pic, Imagine By John Lennon came on my streaming radio station... Talk about chilling.. I hope who ever wins the election for President they really work on getting us out of this War... How can people of power look upon these pics and sleep at night knowing there the cause to all this pain?
- groberts1980, on 03/12/2008, -2/+6Honor our fallen soldiers. And bring home the one's still standing.
- rkbabang, on 03/12/2008, -2/+3After viewing those pictures and reading the captions on every one I just wish I believed in Hell so I could believe that Bush will be burning there someday.
- pbeternal99, on 03/12/2008, -2/+1Very sad. RIP.
- jericho62, on 03/12/2008, -2/+5For the first time in three years, I wasn't automatically angry about what has been going on in Iraq. I forgot about the politics and just felt. Maybe sometimes words get in the way. I just sat here at work, looked through every picture.... and quietly wept. God bless our soldiers and their families.
