- diggamer, on 10/12/2007, -14/+31Q: Why can't Helen Keller drive?
A: Cause she's a woman.
I'll take the risk of the 3-4 females on digg digging me down :) - davidsmero, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Helen Keller sucks
- PhoneJack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14A: Because she's dead.
- otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5lets keep in mind, this is the same institution that, 60 years, did not allow colored people to be TAs or Professors.
- diggamer, on 10/12/2007, -14/+31Q: Why can't Helen Keller drive?
- bigd063, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19What did they name her?
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1aaahhh.... witty beyond disbelief.
- hernam19, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1to shane,
incase you didnt notice, digg isnt a website, its a life.

- yossarian24, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Q. Why did Helen Keller's dog run away?
A. You would too if your name was BLAWADFJF- diggamer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Mine is a woman joke, hence relevant. Yours is an unrelated Helen Keller joke. You fail at life.
- gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they didnt stray too far name-wise
- ornerycat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I'm getting really fed up with the "first women to ______" news. When are we going to just accept that women can do useful things too and quit calling it news?
- shteinb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Harvard's presidency is a very prestigious position, arguably the most prestigious in higher education. While women control the presidencies of three other ivies, Harvard is still a major symbol. Its also news since the last president who was sort of booted out said some strange, some would say offensive remarks regarding women's scientific and mathematical aptitude.
It is a symbolic thing, and for many women in academia it is very heartening news. It suggests that there really may be no barrier left for them, since this is pretty much as high as you can go. - AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1No kidding, same with the "first two black coaches in..." stuff. Everyone yells sexism and racist and then fail to realize that they're the ones calling attention to it.
- mrscomputergeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Amen to that!

- ornerycat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm happy for the woman. But I didn't need to see this news to know that I too could become president of an Ivy League if I were ambitious enough.
- Caps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It sucks that a few people turned the position down, because now she is not the best person for the job, but the person who wants the job.
- shteinb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Noone actually turned it down. People simply noted that they didn't want the position. They were never asked by the search committee. After the Larry Summers debacle its hard to blame them though. Harvard inter-university politics is kind of sick. What else to expect when there a 30+ billion dollar endowment on the line, along with a 3 billion dollar annual budget.
- manova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They really wanted Thomas Cech.

Of course no one was actually asked, they only ask the final candidate once they know what the answer will be so no one actually turns them down. When you are a finalist for a university presidency, especially Harvard, and you withdraw your name, you turned them down.
- raybury, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"Harvard names First Woman president"
Eve? - Blizzardman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1There goes Harvard.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Faust?! What kind of deal did she have to make to get that position?
- diggamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Diggers don't read Goethe.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was hoping somebody would mention that. TBH, I would love to go out with damning knowledge, it'd help me pick up chicks and I can contribute to the scientific community in a way that very few have (see Hawking). Besides, I don't believe in the afterlife anyway, so it's a win-lose-win.
- OhROFL, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Oh how the mighty have fallen. Let's hope America doesn't follow suit...
- Quote, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0sarcasm> And another... not so giant leap for women kind... because it's not like they are human.
- jiggidy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Who cares. We didnt make a big deal abotu the first male secretary, or thee first male nurse! get off me.
- jiggidy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who gives a *****. pretty much what you're telling me is that its such a rarity that a woman is smart. quit demeaning your own kind.
- amowls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4About ***** time, no?
- RunWithScissors, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sommers: "It's possible that men are naturally more inclined towards the Engineering and Math"
Harvard: "You're fired. Let's hire a woman."
TRANSLATION
Sommers: "Looking at data over time, an overwhelming result is showing that women are less interested in Engineering and Math.
Harvard: "Even though you are a Clintonian liberal, you aren't socialist enough for those of us who hate a rational basis for education. Let's hire a woman for kicks."- sleepychick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sommers didn't say men were naturally more inclined to Engineering and Math. He said women had inately less ability in those areas. Show me the rational basis for that.
