My old manager was recently fired because she had her grandmother die then her mom die in the same month. Then one month later her son died in Iraq. They fired her because she missed work...
...because she was at funerals.

Places can fire people because they smoke, because they are too fat, because their family members are too fat, because they liked the movie "Pearl Harbor," because they smell funny, or because they simply don't like the employee.

easy to say until it happens to you - TheSabre, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You're right. Political beliefs are not protected under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which defines Equal Opportunity Employment. Title 42, Chapter 21, Subchapter 6, Section 2000e-2 of the United States Code reads:
"It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin."

II. What Discriminatory Practices Are Prohibited by These Laws?

Wrongful termination only applies to protected classes under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This covers race, color, religion, gender, and national origin. Americans with Disibilities Act further defines rights for disabled individuals. A bill introduced in Congress in April of this year, if passed, will provide the same protection for sexual orientation.
Currently, you CAN get fired legally for sexual orientation, beliefs, and political affiliation. There are not protected under the CRA or ADA. Most companies further define equal opportunity guideliens to include orientation or political affiliation, but it is by no means law.

That's a pretty good trade off.

How they see fit? Every time I see this I howl. I've run several of my own businesses (private practice) and there is no such thing as running it as you see fit. From civic law on up to federal law there are dozens upon dozens of statutes that apply to even the most mundane business. What you can sell, what you can't, who you can hire, who you can fire ... everything.

Retail giant Meijer Inc. has eliminated 500 managerial jobs as part of a restructuring of its supercenters.
Spokeswoman Stacie Behler said Friday that 500 managers were given severance packages, while others were relocated to other Meijer stores and assigned different positions.
