You sure read a lot into "How exciting!!" . . . I would hate to see how you respond to people who tell you "happy birthday!!" - kuribo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+146Now, for the most fun:
1. Print these up
2. Wrap a current Harry Potter book in them
3. Read on subway, in bookstore, in airport, etc., or take to a midnight launch party for book 7 - DoodleMaster, on 10/12/2007, -22/+151It is exciting, its the last book to the end of a world wide phenom, do you know how many countless jokes were made of harry potter that will all to soon come to an end (i.e Harry Pothead (scary Movie 2))? To tell you the truth if you look at harry potter on the whole, in almost every aspect of social life harry potter has made its way in there. It has made kids want to read! Personally I think those people who hate Harry Potter, just because its stupid, its so old, its this, its that.... just need to cut back for once and see what J.K Rowling did. She is self made (for the most part) Millionaire, who was before this a waitress. This could have been potentially inspirational to some other person in the world with a job like hers to go out and do something, to make a fortune for themselves just like she did. That's just my opinion I suppose I know that she helped me started reading...at least she has helped one person.

- Bloodraven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+654. "OH CRAP, NOOOO HE's DEAD!!!" - In line for Barnes and Noble on release night
- btattersall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52Or just slide it onto the shelves of your local bookstore
- robdiggity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53And for the further record, she is a Billionaire, not a Millionaire. She can buy and sell your queen twice over.
- chewybrain, on 10/12/2007, -7/+56Only 4 months left until we get to read stories about outraged fans who have the book spoiled for them while standing in line waiting for their copies.
- Bloodraven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39"Harry.... I'm your father!"
- copeland3300, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37yeah, that's not creepy at all....

Oh, it's the book. - etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Direct link to cover: http://mugglenet.com/viewer/?image_location=/dhcovers/hp7childus.jpg
- reaver84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32So adults can read this in public and not deal with the shame of a kid's book cover.
- kevcowiffle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31I may have an American bias here, but the cover art on the UK Children's edition is just plain awful. It seems like the US version is now basing Harry Potter's looks solely on Daniel Radcliffe, but that's not a bad thing, because it is actually a very cool illustration. The British version has put a little too much emphasis on Harry's teeth, and the drawing looks like the cover art for an 80's PC adventure game.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33@doodlemaster
Lol. Don't be so quick to assume that the Harry Potter fanbase/craze will die so quickly. There's still movies to make, spinoffs to produce, etc. - Doktag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Gratuitous sex scenes and violence. Sif read the children's edition.
- KathleenLooby, on 10/12/2007, -7/+34I really do not like the UK cover art. Too much treasure.
- Bloodraven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24What are you talking about, isn't she already legal in England. It's 16 over there everyone ;-)
- durzagott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Must've been done by Banksy in the dead of night.
- OUChevelleSS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23For the record, JK Rowling was a teacher, not a waitress.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24"And for the further record, she is a Billionaire, not a Millionaire. She can buy and sell your queen twice over."
Wait, you can buy and sell people who have less money than you? Sweet, I'm off to build me an army of homeless people - coder316, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILER!
==============================
I have a few speculations about Harry Potter:
1) Harry could be a horcrux - hence the prediction made when he was born
2) Neville is the real target of said prediction, and it will be he who defeats voldemort
3) Something happened when Neville was young - perhaps he witnessed his parents' torture - and a memory charm was used on him; this explains Neville's exceptionally bad memory
4) Harry is the heir of Godric Gryffindor, thus why he was able to pull out Gryffindor's sword in book 2, and why he has so many of traits that seem to resemble Gryffindor. Remember that James Potter, unlike Lily Potter, was not a muggle. In fact, James Potter came from a long line of wizards, of which Harry (conveniently) knows nothing about.
5) Godric Gryffindor's sword is a horcrux.
6) R.A.B. is definitely Sirius Black's younger brother; see Book 5, around 100 pages in (when they're looking at the Black family tree)
7) In the children's UK book cover, all of that gold is there for a reason: One of the horcruxes (most likely Slytherin's ring) is buried in that pile of riches.
8) Aunt Petunia has some kind of importance. As hinted several times across the series, living with a relative somehow creates a safe-haven for Harry. Also, think back to Dumbledore's letter to Petunia at the beginning of book 5, "Remember my last!" - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19What ever he was thinking... seconded.
- badken, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20New book title:
Harry Potter Joins Mi5 - vs292, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Only the covers are different, the text is identical.
- potterboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15BADTeeth obviously hasn't read the H.P. series.
- JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Well, in the books he's famous just because he's alive.
The books themselves are popular cos they're great fun =P - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12For the benefit of US readers, the two covers shown on the BBC site are the UK adult and child versions. A large number of adults here read Harry Potter, but don't want to be seen reading a 'childrens book', hence the more 'grown up' cover.
- puffinkiss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I love the oils by Mary Grandpre on the US covers. Looks so much more profession and clean than both the UK covers, and I like how it it's just Harry and Voldemort- the point of HP, not treasures and such.
- Bloodraven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14It almost looks like Harry and Voldemort are working together in the US Cover version
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That is a fantastic idea.
Or get one of those empty hardbound journals and wrap it up. I can imagine the look on someone's face when they opened the book and it was completely empty. - Cyrus89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Does Anyone know the difference between the Adult and Normal Versions?
- reaver84, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15He can conjure a patronus...CAN YOU DO THAT WITH THE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS?!
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8He's famous because he survived a mortal curse. No one else did, and everyone was afraid of Vold. up until him. He didn't *do* anything, but he's the symbol of the destruction of a menace to their whole society.
It's a better reason for being famous than Paris Hilton's got. - VinceIP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Emma Watson = boner
- Bloodraven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I don't think JK ever meant for him to be a "spectacular" wizard. He's just a wizard, a scorn wizard. Plus it wouldn't be a story if he was a wimp.
- nickrhein, on 10/12/2007, -28/+35How exciting!!
- KathleenLooby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I would hardly say Harry looks "smiley," he looks rather intense to me. I'm not really sure flying through treasure looking panicky says much more than standing, facing Voldemort, and looking intense, but still calm.
- drdank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Not my idea, saw it in a Fark thread, but if that treasure is in Gringott's, then that hand may belong to one of the goblins, not a house elf.
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9really do not like the UK cover art. Too much treasure.
So buy the adult cover version then. - MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Here's the summaries on the UK covers:
Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous and seemingly impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes. Never has Harry felt so alone, or faced a future so full of shadows. But Harry must somehow find within himself the strength to complete the task he has been given. He must leave the warmth, safety, and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation the inexorable path laid out for him!
In this final, seventh installment of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling unveils in spectacular fashion the answers to the many questions that have been so eagerly awaited. The spellbinding, richly woven narrative, which plunges, twists and turns at a breathtaking pace, confirms the author as a mistress of storytelling, whose books will be read, reread and read again.
================
Harry is waiting in Privet Drive. The Order of the Phoenix is coming to escort him safely away without Voldemort and his supporters knowing if they can. But what will Harry do then? How can he fulfill the momentous and seemingly impossible task that Professor Dumbledore has left him with? - Bloodraven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's a fantastic story. It's something kids and grown-ups can relate to. It's like magic tricks without the corny stuff, J.K. Rowling did well to 'blend' it in with real life. Harry's friends are his life, and the fact they work together is a display of fantastic friendship.
As for it being so popular? I'd probably have to say it's mostly the children that make it popular because the story is mostly a book for early teens, and when I was that age it highly appealed to me, now it doesn't as much as say, Lord of the Rings, but its just a wonderful story. - Jgsublime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It was all just a dream of an autistic child looking at a snowglobe.
- WeasleysGirl, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14I just got chills.

The trio are signed up for all three films: http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/March2007/23/c6173.html - drdank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Is that Gryffyndor's sword Ron is holding?
- drdank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6In the UK adult edition, that's definitely Slytherin's locket.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think its Doby who is holding the sword..
