Digg Townhall Tonight!
Tune into the live Digg townhall tonight at 5:00pm PST/8:00pm EST.
Hamas refuses to monitor the fragile cease fire
usatoday.com — After rockets were fired into Israel breaking the truce, Hamas refuses to police the cease fire. One of the hallmarks of a legitimate government is that it has a monopoly on the use of force. Hamas's refusal even to try to exercise such a monopoly reveals that it is not a government but a gang.

- wpi97, on 06/26/2008, -0/+21Hmm... So let me get this straight... Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire, which Hamas is not required to enforce... because... it is committed to the destruction of Israel? This must be the deal of the century for Israel!
I think Israel should declare that it will not act as a police force for the murderous terrorist thug state of Gaza, and that it will not attempt to stop individuals or groups not affiliated with the IDF from attacking it.- idisagree, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0If this article is accurate, I may have to reconsider some of my beliefs.
- TRMarchesano, on 06/26/2008, -1/+21Funny how this only has 24 diggs and a Huffpo story about how McCain = 4 more years of Bush has 1200
Us on the right need to be more active in Digg, hence all the shouts...- KJeffV, on 06/26/2008, -2/+11While I agree w/you in principle, I believe real work gets accomplished by real workers . . . conservatives iow.
Leftists, pls don't respond w/the single exception you know about or conjured out of thin air.- hadees, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Although my icon suggests otherwise I am extremely moderate. As such I have a disdain for partisan politics and idiots who go around complaining about leftists or conservatives.
Support for Israel has nothing to do with where people sit on the political spectrum. Partisan politics is destroying America because we spend all our time bickering instead of compromising so we can actually get something accomplished.
As a conservative you should be interested in what the founding fathers thought and they although had vigorous debates at some point put those differences aside for the good of everyone as a whole.

Where does it say you have to be conservative to believe in the legitimacy of Israel?
Israel is the most liberal state in all of the Middle East.- monsieurginger, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9Amen brother.
- wpi97, on 06/26/2008, -0/+13"Where does it say you have to be conservative to believe in the legitimacy of Israel?"
Indeed. You just have to be a reasonable non-Jew-hating person. Unfortunately, such people do not tend to scream at the top of their lungs "Be reasonable!" ((c) Jon Stuart).
I think this rabid antisemitism that we see here has nothing to do with being left or right. It has to do with being _extreme_ left or _extreme_ right. The crazies on either side of the political spectrum always need a cause to rally around, and Jew-hatred always conveniently provides such a cause.
The only consolation is that while deep down extreme left and extreme right are really very similar, they have to oppose each other's rhetoric. Because of this only one side can adopt Jew-hatred as a rallying cause at any given time. In 1930's and 1940's it was the Nazis (the far right). Today it is the far left.- wpi97, on 06/26/2008, -0/+10Just to clarify: by "non-Jew-hating" I mean someone who does not hate Jews, not someone who hates non-Jews. :)

- DrDreyfus, on 06/26/2008, -0/+15Israel is the most liberal state in all of the Middle East...
- AllINeed, on 06/26/2008, -0/+8And while that fact (that Israel is a liberal country) is a semi-scary thought for me, personally... it is a comfortable reality for all the Muslims/Christians/Druze/Jews that are from the Middle East/South East Asia/Europe/Latin America/North America/Africa... freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, ask-tell-flaunt your homosexuality in the military or on the streets mentality (see Ian Benardo - http://www.picable.com/People/Men/The-Famous-Ian-B ... ), equal opportunity, and overall democracy/equality for all citizens.

Leftists believe in equality for all, conservatives believe in liberty for all. Where do you stand?- wpi97, on 06/26/2008, -1/+7If it were only that simple...
- these3remain, on 06/26/2008, -2/+9Leftists believe in equality for all - only some are more equal than others - do the words "Animal Farm" come to mind?

- SupaFupa, on 06/27/2008, -5/+0Why is it that that no one can seem to defend israel's legitimacy without the use of ad hominem attacks, double standards, and other logical fallacies? I'll agree that Hamas has dropped its end of the bargain here, but everyone acts like israel has never broken a ceasefire or violated a treaty.
- wpi97, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6"Why is it that that no one can seem to defend israel's legitimacy without the use of ad hominem attacks, double standards, and other logical fallacies?"
Please point out an example where I have used a an hominem attack, a double standard, or committed a logical fallacy in this discussion. And if you cannot, would that not make your statement a fallacy as well as an ad hominem attack?
"but everyone acts like israel has never broken a ceasefire or violated a treaty."
Examples? References? Name one treaty that Israel has violated.
Why is it that nobody can counter an argument supporting Israel without the use of ad hominem attacks, logical fallacies, unsupported claims, and outright lies?- SupaFupa, on 06/27/2008, -5/+0Are you serious? This is too easy.
The following two quotes contain personal attacks and misleading vividness.
"I think Israel should declare that it will not act as a police force for the murderous terrorist thug state of Gaza."
"The crazies on either side of the political spectrum always need a cause to rally around, and Jew-hatred always conveniently provides such a cause."
On the first page of results for a google search of "israel violates treaty":
http://zionism-israel.com/israel_news/2007/02/jord ...- wpi97, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4"An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: "argument to the man", "argument against the man") consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem
So, as you can see, saying that Gaza is a murderous terrorist thug state is not an ad hominem attack, because it refers to the matter being discussed, and not to an opponent. If, on the other hand, I were to say that _you_ are an ignorant person, who uses the term "ad hominem" without knowing what it means, and thus anything you say is false, that would be an ad hominem argument. Similarly, your previous post is an ad hominem attack, because you attacked the people defending Israel, rather than the points that they make. Get it?
As far as your link to an alleged violation of a treaty by Israel, 25 Jordanian lawmakers saying that Israel violated a treaty does not make it true. I suggest you present the actual text of the treaty, and explain how exactly Israeli actions violate it. Otherwise, what you have here is hearsay.
Also, don't you think there is a bit of a difference between barring a cleric from the Old City of Jerusalem for disturbing the peace and firing rockets, which is a clear act of war?
