- bballhead, on 06/12/2009, -5/+26Screw Mexico. You can't drive 2 miles without being pulled over and shaken down for a bribe. They don't deserve the business till they clean up their act.
- mparker21311, on 06/12/2009, -5/+19Legalize it, take money away from the thugs.
- satori3000, on 06/12/2009, -4/+12before the cartel war started Canadian tourists kept ending up dead and the police tended to turn a blind eye for what ever reason. Mexico has been off our travel list for quite some time.
- ElGigi, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7I'm from Chile and was there last week... People was very nice with tourists but we were told to be very careful with the police, as they could do anything to get some money from us. Really scary.
Anyways, it's a great country to go. - sodade, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6Exactly - as an american tourist, I am way more afraid of crooked cops than drug lords.
- T8erT0T, on 06/12/2009, -0/+5The book was good too. Jared Diamond has really dumb stories in the beginnings of some of his chapters though, but his points and reasons are sound.
Stick with the doc though, it condenses a lot of the fluff in the book without sacrificing his points. - endustry, on 06/12/2009, -0/+4Fewer police *in* the cartels would be a good start.
- Hetman, on 06/12/2009, -0/+4Agreed. The war on drugs is currently destroying mexico and america. Yet no one will stop it.
- manjas8, on 06/12/2009, -0/+4No hugs for thugs!
- SpookyET, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3If I may point to this story I submitted: http://digg.com/world_news/US_poised_to_join_Mexic ...
The American government want to send law enforcement agents and possibly the national guard to the border.
Yes, please send poorly trained national guard and/or law enforcement DEA agents against Los Zetas, former Mexican special forces trained by American special forces in United States to fight against the drug lords they used to serve. I said used because the muscle has become the brain. They know the methods used to fight against them because they were trained to use them. They have advantage.
These Zetas have set up their own training camps modelled after the camps in United States. They have better equipment and more money than the Mexicans and the Americans across the border. Not to mention, they use military tactics to achieve their objects. Our cops and border patrol agents are not trained in military tactics. They have taken over entire towns. They travel in convoys of armoured Humvees in camouflage with full tactical gear armed to the teeth. They look and behave like special forces, not gang bangers. They should be treated as such.
Federal government, stop using our tax money to support the drug corporations by fighting against their competition. Legalise and tax marijuana. It will give the Zetas some wanking time until they figure out their next enterprise.

- jpellat, on 06/12/2009, -2/+5sad to hear uneducated trolls bash a loyal ally of the USA... What is your alternative, embrace the terrorists and ignore the problem?
BTW, Acapulco is now popular only with Mexican tourists, and the ¨blazing battle¨ happened in the old part of acapulco, streets away from the shore,,, really far away from the new Acapulco Diamante zone visited by foreigners....
Trying to compare Acapulco with Cancun or Cabo is like comparing downtown detroit to Manhattan - asgardshill, on 06/12/2009, -3/+6The drug cartels could cease to exist tomorrow with one stroke of a legislator's pen. If they weren't making so much money supplying dried plants and chemicals to eager consumers, they'd have no reason to go around shooting and grenading innocent people. Take away the money flow by legalizing drugs and you take away their motivation.
- user500, on 06/12/2009, -1/+3The other problem is there are so many Mexicans in this country its like being in Mexico everywhere in this country.
- joemofo214, on 06/12/2009, -3/+5Being Mexican American, and seeing the violence spill over on U.S. soil, I would really like Obama to do something about it... but we Mexicans need to take care of our own problems.
But the violence would be greatly reduced if we legalized marijuana... just saying - kingboyj, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2Chile is a million times better to visit.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1too much money in it man, on both sides.
- Hetman, on 06/12/2009, -2/+3Yes cocaine also.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1There was an overhaul.
Calderon called in the Army. - joemofo214, on 06/12/2009, -2/+3you're a tool.
- squiddah, on 06/12/2009, -3/+4By your reasoning I should have been pulled over 2000 times during my 4k mile trip through Mexico in Jan. and Feb. I was pulled over one time because I was speeding. Go figure, I was breaking the law and I got pulled over. The Cop let me go with only a warning.
That being said, I have given bribes as well as paid legitimate tickets over the last 15 years of road trips around Mexico. You are using a broad brush to paint an inaccurate picture of Mexico. Yes there is violence. Yes there is corruption. Both widely affect the border areas and other pockets of the country, but get 100 miles over the border and it is generally a different world full of wonderful people, culture, food and history. - Sunscreen, on 06/12/2009, -3/+4Guns, Germs, and Steel was a really interesting documentary. ^_^
- toddc612, on 06/12/2009, -3/+4Poor Mexico. As a tourist, I've had a great time there..
But what's the solution? An overhaul in how the police fight the drug cartels? - DarthTater, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1I also have no sympathy for people buying drug anywere (USA included)They are financing the violence in countries like Mexico and Colombia.
- jpellat, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1The huffington post even had the nerve of posting a picture of a tourist packed beach. This just proves how the media is full of sensationalist morons.
- satori3000, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1the gangs exist to make money of illegal trade, if it wasn't marijuana it'd be something else. Legalizing marijuana would empty a lot of american jails of people that really don't belong there and would allow the us government to capitalize on something that is going to occur anyway. Lets simply be clear though, the sorts of issues that are occurring with the gun violence is about owning a portion of the trade of illegal goods and shouldn't be confused with what is largely a separate issue when it comes to legalizing marijuana.
- joemofo214, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1legalizing marijuana would greatly reduce the drug trafficking into the united states, to the point where the drug cartels could be easily dealt with by the mexican government.
we've all seen what happened to organized crime during prohibition, the mafia did not go away, but the number of crimes greatly decreased. - make7upyours06, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1thanks for clearing that up. I hope more people realize that this ''battle'' took place away from any tourist zones. Time just likes to add drama to its articles.
- Prayformojo777, on 06/12/2009, -1/+2I have been to Mexico twice in the last 6 months (Rocky Point and Cancun during the height of swine flu mania) and had no problems. As a tourist, whether in Mexico or any other country, one needs to be smart about where they visit in the country and follow the country's laws. From what I have read regarding the drug war in Mexico most deaths have been either law enforcement or drug cartel fighters; it is obviously still tragic and problematic for the country as a whole, but the media is completely sensationalizing the situation.
- satori3000, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1they'd switch the types of drugs that they'd sell. We all saw what happened after prohibition, crime didn't go away, it just diversified. I agree that Marijuana should be legalized, but only because I believe that gateway users don't deserve to end up in jail.
- pantsperch, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1Congratulations, you're an idiot.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -2/+2Not to sound like to much of a Douche but they brought it on themselves. If the Mexican government were so corrupted and lazy and took the initiative and find a way to stop the Drug Wars then they wouldn't be in the cluster ***** that they're in right now. I have no sympathy except for the good citizens stuck in the crossfire.
- CRCulver, on 06/12/2009, -2/+2OK, we'll then raise your taxes to deal with the public health nightmare of widespread cocaine addiction.
Even enlightened countries like Holland that treat addicts as patients instead of criminals don't let people freely buy and sell the stuff. - govindprasad01, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1These events are now quite common in every country, these drugs are supplied in many countries and as far as there's money flowing inn these event continue to rise and terrorize all.
if not cartels there are damn terrorist to scare the ***** out of people, ultimately making us stay in our home scared.
The one that suffers is the common man, local business paying the price ultimately. - Hetman, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1It would be regulated like any other type of drug. You can go get speed right now if you really want to. Fake narcolypse, fake add, it happens all the time in this country. The same can be said about morphine and oxycotin which is basically just herion.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -4/+4Are you talking about the cocaine they sell too?.
- kolyanych30, on 07/27/2009, -0/+0i dont think that mexico is a *****, you are mistaken
- SpykerSpeed, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1Who starts these gun fights? Ah yes, the government.
- nepidae, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1bears, beets, battlestar galactica
- deema1, on 06/12/2009, -8/+5Don't forget diarrhea.
The Curse of Montezuma's Revenge. - datsum5770, on 06/12/2009, -6/+3I don't understand why you're being dugg down...Mexico is a ***** hole!
- TheBogie, on 06/12/2009, -13/+7This is nothing new. Old Mexico has ALWAYS been a towering pile of *****.
I wouldn't go there for all the nachos in the world.
