- bradspangler, on 02/25/2009, -2/+91And how many of these guards will later move on to careers in civilian law enforcement?
- colincornaby, on 02/25/2009, -4/+58Jees, from the comments you'd assume Obama himself is going to Guantanamo and started torturing people.
He's closing the camp. But suddenly now he's worse than Bush because some guards are pissed off. Knee jerk much? - wild, on 02/25/2009, -4/+51"He stressed the mistreatment did not appear to be directed from above, but was an initiative undertaken by frustrated U.S. army and navy jailers on the ground."
Bit of a different story no? And Obama ordered a review at the end of January and it sounds like it just finished on Monday. How about we give Obama a chance to respond?
Seriously, some poeple are grasping at any straw they can. - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -12/+54Wow. The propagandists didn't waste waste time getting their posts in first.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -15/+56fta:
"According to my clients, there has been a ramping up in abuse...."
"If one was to use one's imagination, [one] could say that these traumatized...."
Yeah. - Zain123, on 02/25/2009, -3/+32I'm sure the prison workers would love to document the abuse for you. Just hop on over with a camera and ask them politely.
- Platypus3333, on 02/25/2009, -2/+30Did all you people bashing Obama read the article, or just the headline? It says right in the first paragraph that the abuses have worsened because prison guards are "getting their kicks in." Indeed, the second paragraph notes that abuses initially picked up in December, BEFORE OBAMA TOOK OFFICE.
- ChronicColonic, on 02/25/2009, -8/+30Got to get the beatings in before Club Gitmo closes permanently.
- SQLserver, on 02/25/2009, -4/+26IT'S ALL OBAMA'S FAULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111
- Aadain, on 02/25/2009, -2/+20It's all the Republicans/Conservatives can do. So far, Obama has not personally done anything really wrong/bad. Sure, he's had to compromise on a few of his promises, but overall he's trying to steer the country back onto a more sane path than Bush left us in. So when the Right can't find any real dirt, they make a bunch of stuff up or try to fling some of Bush's muck at him and hope a few stick.
- phyzixphairy, on 02/26/2009, -2/+20For major LOL, imagine comment like the above being modded up while Bush was in office.
- eRenee, on 02/25/2009, -43/+60Really? Where's the proof? The 'clients' lawyers'? Give me a break.
- inc595, on 02/25/2009, -1/+16dug for sarcasm
- zeth006, on 02/25/2009, -1/+16What did Obama do and what does his actions have to do with this?
He just got into office. Stay on topic, bozo. - wild, on 02/25/2009, -0/+15Good thing he gave it a year so they can figure out what to do with them. Better than just being completely reactionary.
- DreKor, on 02/25/2009, -0/+13I'm not sure he is applicable to this situation
- smotpoker, on 02/25/2009, -1/+14Bush and his cabinet approved torture from the beginning and set the prevailing sentiment that everyone there is guilty (without due process) and subhuman. They had *everything* to do with it
- jakereilly, on 02/25/2009, -0/+12WHHAAA THEY WANT TO KILL US ALL!!! DIE DIE DIE!!
alarmist much? Settle the ***** down.
Just because a very very very small minority of the Islamic people hate America doesn't justify abandoning the very principles that separate US from THEM.
liberal lawyers? you are pathetic. - aufte, on 02/25/2009, -2/+13You're the reason people hate America.
- AndySavage, on 02/26/2009, -0/+11How many times must people be reminded that BUSH APPROVED THE TORTURE MEMOS. These people never quit.
- zeth006, on 02/25/2009, -1/+12Hey, Obama didn't set up Guantanamo.
Stay on topic. - ironhide, on 02/25/2009, -2/+13Judging by your comment, I can see you're completely unfamiliar with the Digg comment history of the previous commenters.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -8/+18Yeah, they all got a fair trial....
- sockpuppets, on 02/25/2009, -2/+12Good thing you're not paid to think.
- VoodooPunk, on 02/26/2009, -0/+9I did check out his/her history as you suggest and I stand corrected. Omg is a bigotted piece of ***** that deserves every insult anyone wants to throw at him/her/it. My apologies publiclurker.
- DaviDTC, on 02/25/2009, -2/+10Perhaps you should read the article, like this part.
"He stressed the mistreatment did not appear to be directed from above, but was an initiative undertaken by frustrated U.S. army and navy jailers on the ground."
There is no evidence or even speculation that Obama has any role in this. - publiclurker, on 02/26/2009, -0/+7Check out his history. I stand by my statements of fact.
- smotpoker, on 02/25/2009, -1/+8"These people want to KILL YOU! They have killed us! Yes US citizens. Remember 9/11?!!"
Do you have some courtroom transcripts, sworn affidavits and evidence exhibits to corroborate your accusation that statement? How about some sort of proof that your statements are any more credible than the "liberal laywers'" or the detainees?
No? Then I will conclude that most of those detained were reported just to get reward money and it is just as likely that they were accused by real terrorists to fund their cause and distract U.S. forces. - Pstall, on 02/25/2009, -4/+11The article (which is hearsay) is making the comparison that since gitomo will be closed soon that soldiers are now trying to beat the inmates.
Obama really has nothing to do with the inmates crying, just like Bush had nothing to do with the inmates crying.
The article really means nothing. It is kind of an insult to the troops there if none of those beatings and things are actually occurring. - publiclurker, on 02/26/2009, -0/+7And how has killing people in an immoral war done anything to affect his right of speech you war mongering disgrace.
- sadisticmind, on 02/26/2009, -1/+8close, we were looking for the number "42", but thanks for playing, it was a pleasure having you on
- Pstall, on 02/25/2009, -1/+8I would like more information. Right now all we have is hearsay, enough for an investigation maybe (I thought Obama just had a report come back saying everything was okay?) but we should not be condemning anyone yet. It is not fair to the soldiers stationed there.
- publiclurker, on 02/26/2009, -0/+7So you think that just because you wear a uniform that you can justify your hate filled actions any better than those you abuse?
And by the way, Iraq had nothing to do with 911. Not that you need any legitimate reason to kill anyone different than yourself. - Whackly, on 02/25/2009, -6/+13Yeah, I wouldn't mind the rape by instrument but the dirty prayer rugs.. that's just too far.
/proud to be intentionally ignorant - TheDrewboy64, on 02/26/2009, -3/+9But it really isn't obama hypocrisy. It's not like he's telling the guards to torture a bunch before he closes the camp.
Of course it would be nice to see him do more to ensure the prisoners' safety. - publiclurker, on 02/25/2009, -2/+8Like you'd ever take the word of a black man anyway.
- DreKor, on 02/25/2009, -2/+8"He stressed the mistreatment did not appear to be directed from above, but was an initiative undertaken by frustrated U.S. army and navy jailers on the ground."
New administration, same "Specialists" on the ground. - Intyale, on 02/26/2009, -0/+6I was JUST about to reply with the same thing, jakereilly.
You, Mr. US Marine, are no better then they are. 9/11 was a TERRORIST ATTACK, by retarded extremists, much like yourself. It really scares the ***** out of me that people like you are upholding the American image. I know not all soldiers are like you, but still, it's ludicrous. - AndySavage, on 02/26/2009, -0/+6Well it's a good thing you weren't captured while in the gulf region, cause their military would be saying the same thing about you. All of these people really want to KILL ME? They're all RADICAL ISLAMISTS? I'll let a jury decide that. You would demand the same for yourself, would you not?
- lacronicus, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7It's because of idiots like you that people hate us.
RTFA: Even according to the lawyer, the guards are beating the inmates because they know Obama is planning to shut the place down. Far from encouraging the actions, they're increasing because of his plans to do exactly the opposite. - lacronicus, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7Even terrorists deserve a day in court, since that day in court is the only thing that can officially deem them terrorists. These men, like every other person on earth, deserve to be given the same treatment as everyone else, meaning innocent until proven (in a court of law) guilty, and no innocent man deserves the treatment they're being given.
- jakereilly, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6Of course they aren't going to be freed, unless they are innocent and have been held without charge illegally.
This is America. We are a nation founded on principles. Principles, not choices depending on the situation or "terrorism". We are America. We are better than that.
End.
Grow up. - inactive, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5Cockmeat*
- kward711, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5he is. But it's not the overnight process you expect it to be.
- Bartboy919, on 02/26/2009, -1/+6Dear Commenter,
Before you post, you should read the article.
This has nothing to do with Obama, this is a problem with the prison guards in Gitomo. - clickmyface, on 02/26/2009, -1/+6He did have a tentative plan, which was to release those that can be released, and give trials to the rest. He campaigned on that. The plan is the same. The only question is what to do with the highly sensitive cases where national security is most important. This is not a question that can be answered easily by anyone. Thus the year.
I guess you missed all that. - Kyzzyxx, on 02/26/2009, -2/+7@offr
You're ***** serious, aren't you? Wow. Pathetic. MOST people didn't start criticizing Bush until it was proven how much he ***** ***** up. This was proven by all the idiots that voted for him AGAIN in 2004.
'legitimacy'? Really? So, basically, what you are saying is you know Obama is bad as well as they know Obama is good. Is that what you are saying? Cause if it is, you are both idiots. He hasn't proven anything, either way. You just WANT him to be the person you think he is cause it will make you feel better. How selfish and gullible can you be?
Hm, I got a bank you can buy. - scottk59, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5Or giving the green light to torture. OOPS, that one's real. offrdbandit FAILS AGAIN.
- jakereilly, on 02/25/2009, -3/+8Yes, of course, America can do no harm and the numerous reports of people there who have not been charged with anything are all falsities perpetuated by the liberal media and socialists.
All clear now champ! - egoideal, on 02/25/2009, -0/+5There is a world of difference between allowing, and even encouraging, abuse of prisoners and what is being discussed. Basic comprehension fail.
