Have you ever seen that "National Debt Clock" billboard in New York City?
- dan360man, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3And at $130+ a barrel...
- mofo269, on 05/24/2008, -0/+8Wow! I had no idea how much was really involved in getting our oil.
- ColonelTribune, on 05/24/2008, -1/+4There doesn't have to be. Check out this gem:

- samtuck, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2it was nice how hummer really targeted their market with that ad placement too
- orenshk, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2Thanks, it was really annoying.
- cctoronto05, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Thanks dude, I was counting on a good digger to have solved that irritating problem.... why would they do that?
- Rumsfeltcher, on 05/24/2008, -0/+9Thanks, that was really getting in the way of a good story.

- brandonelliott, on 05/24/2008, -4/+7oil, gas, digg, the only thing missing is a political candidate mentioned and it would sum up 99% of the stories on here.
- colto, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Maybe if one of the candidates accidentally dropped their iPhone an a few LOLcats into the oil as well.
- ligyron, on 05/24/2008, -0/+8That counter was making me anxious
- Alix7, on 05/24/2008, -0/+11Great ***** website
- pradaaddict, on 05/24/2008, -0/+11Hmm maybe its my browser but the linkbox "Most Viewed" at the bottom is cutting off half the video and i cant close it down
- dan360man, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3If you're having problems with the site, go to http://chicagotribune.com/oil instead

- hasoon87, on 05/24/2008, -1/+4Wha?, some of the oil comes from iraq? NO WAY! /sarcasm
Great reporting though, very informative. - Jastor00, on 05/24/2008, -7/+1"Travelogue of Addiction" is how he characterizes his piece. No need to continue when the guy uses sensationalist words like "addiction" to describe U.S. and world oil consumption. Are we "addicted" to clothing? Are we "addicted" to clocks? I mean, come ON.
- DiogenesJr, on 05/24/2008, -1/+0Agreed. I love how you're being dugg down too. There is no oil addiction. There is a desire to create wealth and this is a function of our in-built survival mechanism.
- dubdope, on 05/24/2008, -0/+7what kind of a safari is this? there are no lions, elephants or giraffes.
- Ivand, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2only in kenia dude, duh
- piratearggghhh, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3The price of gasoline at a station goes up pretty much every single day. Do they get shipments in every day? Somehow when the price goes down, it takes a long time to be reflected in the pumps.
- samtuck, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1the price hasn't really gone down recently, just keeps climbing. http://www.wtrg.com/daily/clfclose.gif
- piratearggghhh, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2That graph is depressing

- JBabin3xB, on 05/24/2008, -0/+6I wish i could see it but Vonage apparently has a deal that justifies covering half the screen!
- googooly, on 05/24/2008, -1/+6Watched all the Videos. i just wasted 383,000 barrel of oil . :*(
- brad3378, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Watch it again - ***** it.
- TomJoad, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3excellent videos. it shows a good picture of the oil production/politics in the different countries

Holy *****...
Also... Gas is $2.90 in Illinois!?!?! Wow.. it's about $4.15 here in the bay area.- studcopter, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Must be an old price, because today's gas prices near Chicago were also about $4.15.
- byronne, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2Much of the story was written in 2005, along with the filmed footage.
- crimsonredmk, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2Remember how in 2005 people were scared out of their minds about $4 gas? It's here to stay now!
- Beowulf2112, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3Price of gas in Huntington WV $4.19
- dan360man, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1In Huntington? By good ol' Marshall?
- SwordFish666, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1And thats expensive lol?
Come to Europe mate...
- nycmac247, on 05/24/2008, -6/+1Oil is abiotic and this is BS to get you to be afraid.
- KhanneaNL, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Collaborating traitor tool.
- EatChex89, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3The counter makes me feel that somehow if I wasn't there, some oil would be preserved.
- skyking3525, on 05/24/2008, -0/+5What a wonderful documentary. Definitely something that we all need to consider and discuss.
If you own a car this applies to you. - DiogenesJr, on 05/24/2008, -2/+2It's frightening how people expect us to feel guilty for being alive, for doing to things that allow us to continue to live. I love it when the lefties think socializing big oil will help. Or that you can wave a magic, liberal wand and create cars that run on vegetable oil or hemp.
We use a whole lot of oil because there is no other energy source available with the same output for unit measure. I know that at some point in the future this will change, but it will only change through the natural evolution of knowledge and the free market. It will not because everyone really wants it to really bad. This has turned it into a moral issue when it is really a practical, economic issue.
Dugg down for smug inaccuracy and righteous indignation. I know most of you diggers are lefties, but I enjoy interacting with you all the same. How about you use your intellect to look at the issue objectively, not with this typical "I'm smarter than you, I've got it all figured out but still don't have any rational answers" mindset that is so common on your side of the spectrum. I expect more from you all!- fooljoe, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1we use a whole lot of oil because those who produce the oil basically run the world. there are plenty of other energy sources available. for example, a 100 mile x 100 mile area covered with solar panels could meet the ENTIRE energy demand of the US.
I completely agree with you that we won't transition away from oil until "free market" forces make the switch economical. however, you have to realize that the market we have today is NOT "free" by any stretch of the imagination. also you must realize that when an alternative becomes economical it's not like we can just flip a switch and run our cars, etc. on something else, as an economic model might assume.
any market must work within a clearly defined framework. today, instead of pricing in the uncertainty of future supply and the ecological damage caused by burning oil, we actually subsidize it and encourage the exploding demand. this is complete idiocy.

- retoretoreto, on 05/24/2008, -2/+3Viva Chavez!
- A2007HokieAlumn, on 05/24/2008, -0/+4On the Iraq video segment, a newspaper headline is shown that reads "Oil Barrels Past $75 on Rising World Jitters". That Chicago Tribune article was written on April 22, 2006, roughly two years ago. The price per barrel has almost doubled since then. I hope the acceleration in price slows down, because I don't think I can handle another doubling of the price over the next two years.
- eranru, on 05/24/2008, -0/+219 roubles per 1 liter in St.Petersburg,Russia
- ScienceDoc, on 05/24/2008, -0/+5Importing oil makes no sense. Time to move on.
- MedicalMatt, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Did anyone learn anything new? I mean anything in there we didn't already know?
Check out the new & improved
