hollywoodriot.com — Uh oh. For the first time in the history of mankind, the North Pole might be COMPLETELY ICE-FREE by the end of summer.

How do we know if we didn't even reach the North Pole until 1909?
Not to mention the technology to keep track of that kind of stuff back then.( wait.. sorry... yes.. they had pocking sticks mybad)
I just don't understand how we find this stuff out?
Ok we have some people in the North Pole.. got that.. but do they walk around year round on the ice, poking it with a stick to see how hard it is?
I mean the North pole is a big place, thats allot of poking.
We can't find a 6-foot tall Afghani on Dialysis in a desert, but we know all there is to know about how much ice we have in the North Pole?........ (of all places)
Note: we are in between Ice Ages, it has to melt before it freezes again. - viciouspictures, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2All they do is take pictures from satellites. It's pretty obvious the ice is melting, but as far as how they determine the age of ice - the thicker, the older. Figure out an average of ice build up per year, do some math and you'll get a round number. I'm sure there have been highs and lows, just not to these extremes... the ice hasn't melted all the way since we've been on the Earth (however "thick" that means in years :)
- SEGA4life, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2and satellite's have been around for how long?

- YME1280, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Well it really wouldn't be the first time in history. Polar ice caps have formed for hundreds of thousands of years and thawed to create situations like we're facing today. But, I think I get your point about it being a pretty big deal.
- TrevorBradley, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I remember when estimates for an ice free arctic went from the year 2100, to the year 2038, to the year 2013 just last year.
- TrevorBradley, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Here's a glimpse of what's going on in the arctic. I was poking around Environment Canada's weather service and came across this week's forecast for Arctic Bay, at 73 degrees N:
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pages/nu-10_me ...
Temperatures are getting up to a high of 12-15C (53-59F) up from a normal of 1-6C (34-42F) this time of year. Global average temperatures aren't up all that much and are even down locally (summer has been grey and cold here in Vancouver), but summer arctic temperatures have been skyrocketing... - allieg03, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2None of you seem to care that Santa is DEAD! D-E-A-D.
- Crackerpat, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Pretty funny description you sent in your shout lol.
- MrErr, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1to all the diggers who deny that man has any role to play in global warming .. This cycle of warming and cooling, how long is the cycle and where is the proof for it? Do you know what the highs and the lows are for these cycles?
- Carrot1991, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I swear there is the exact same story front page.
- viciouspictures, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Exact same? No way Carrot. The front page story doesn't have the exclusive footage of Santa's death, which everyone will surely want to see. Nay, they MUST see it.
