Well, two can play at that game -- if the government really believes torture is okay, they shouldn't be hiding what they are doing with it. But they KNOW it's wrong, so they are destroying evidence. Which is a whole separate crime, also worth prosecuting.

So, he was kidnapped 7 years ago and all the terror charges against him were dropped after 6 years of being detained. Yet he's still locked up in Gitmo where it sounds like he could very well die. What is the excuse for this? If they don't have any charges against him why can't they let him go? Are they just keeping him locked up so he can't tell people what has been done? Of course the dedicated government apologists will defend their dear government and claim the victim must have deserved such brutal treatment. They will go out of their way to excuse it, no matter how unjust and inhuman. After all, he is a terrorist! And besides, that's not torture - it is advanced interrogation techniques. We've got a War on Terror to win! The government is promoting freedom and democracy around the world!

They stand idly by and do nothing while the US government gets away with massive crimes. Torture crimes. Wars that kill millions and destroy livelihoods, families and cities. The US government does all of this in your name. Torture. False imprisonment. Unnecessary wars. The government isn't victims of blowback from their terrorist activities, murderous wars and torture, you Americans are. The American people are. American families are. The American people take the hit for what their government does. They take the blame, at any rate. While the government walks. They get away clean, unscathed. The government has all kinds of protection. While citizens are left to fend for themselves and pay the price of government injustice.

The next "good" war America finds itself embroiled in will be full of US troops having their junk cut up with scalpels and every form of torture under the sun. Then, when the war ends and the war crimes tribunals start, all the "bad" guys will have to do is point to George W. Bush and 2000-2008. I'd be loathe to advise any young person to join the US military any more, especially if they're deployable. There's simply too much danger of them suffering the most inhumane and unimaginable tortures if they're captured in battle.

Cutting the genitals of a man never even formally accused of a crime, with no chance to plead his case, who was later cleared of all charges- in what possible universe could this not be construed as a war crime? Then I decided to ask Google why protests don't work. I don't remember the exact article, but it was on NPR, and basically the problem is mostly because
WE "PROTEST" A SINGLE DAY, PACK UP, AND GO HOME. In the past, we did it for days, weeks even. In other countries the true spirit of the protest continues. But not here. We're not mad enough about anything. We have "too much to loose".
In another country, or another time, you have less to loose... the best protestors are those who feel cornered by the government.
