"I translated the news article (Sorry for my bad English):
Three people are missing in a gigantic hole in Guatemala City.
A lot of rain and a ruined sewer created catastrophe in Guatemala City today. Friday morning local time the ground fell down and a gigantic hole appeared, that drew down several houses and one truck. Three persons is so far missing.
The one hundred meeters deep hole opened in one one of the city's poorest and most overpopulated parts. The three who is missing is a 53 year old man, and two teenagers, one boy and a girl.
There was found a dead body down in the ... that surrounded the hole, but it is unclear if it's a victim after the accident.
- The house shivered so much that we woke up, says Edward Ramirez, who lives 50 feet away from the hole, to the newspaper AP. He told that people around the area heard weird sounds and felt that the ground was shivering for about a month before the accident.
Now is both Ramirez and 1000 other persons from the neighborhood evacuated from their homes, and the government warns that the ground is extremely unstable. The police assisted the evacuated out of the area; many people carried with them personal belongings like fridges and TVs.
Around the smelly hole people can still hear sounds and the ground is still shivering, the government fears that the hole will expand.
A spokesman for the local waterworks told that the sewer cable collapsed after being filled and that the town was aware of the problem. The military thinks that a controlled explosion will clean up the sewers, but they didn't manage to fix the problem before the whole thing collapsed. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+58The article claims that this was caused by "rain and a broken sewer system". I strongly doubt that will give you a 100 meter deep hole. I'd say that's a real sinkhole, e.g. a natural, probably very old, cave where the roof has caved in.
- purple, on 10/12/2007, -87/+3A more reliable source, posted by Ninjab3ar above, says the hole is 330 feet deep, or 30.48 metres. Which is still really deep.
- Somebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52No, 330 feet is 100 meters.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -4/+58How do you get 30.48 meters from 330 feet? Maybe you've made the mistake of using canadian feet.

- purple, on 10/12/2007, -30/+53 people realize my own mistake before me, oh joy.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37maybe he used his own feet
- axiomflash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8actually a broken sewer system could leak water which would constantly erode a cavity. it happens. there was something like a 50 yard long sinkhole in Seattle from failing sewer pipes but that was of a different nature.
- Vladamir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yeah i actually live maybe 100 feet from the seattle sinkhole, it was really... wow. the thing about it though, is it was way wider, or at least it seemed that way. Anyway, yeah that was because of drainage pipe issues, and the saddest part is that they only started renovating the drainage system about 4 months ago, and they have hardly done anything but slow up traffic with a bunch of dumb hicks and their massive construction equipment. Oh well thats government for you.
- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this phenomenon has been seen before in a small state in India called Kerala(the govt. has completely adopted linux there *pauses for applause*) . It was happening at an alarming frequency there where wells would cave in and sinkholes would appear.

Should have been "hole", of course.
- SeafoodGumbo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Crazy story. I don't remember seeing any sinkhole pictures where the sides were so sheer. It seems like the sides are usually rounded, but this one's sides are almost perfectly perpendicular to the ground. I wonder what the record is for deepest sinkhole.

So I ask again, please have some repsect. - sstidman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'm no fan of the BBC, but what makes you so sure that your source is correct and the BBC is wrong? It might help, too, if you named your source.

etc etc etc,......
So I really need to go on?
And also the fact that the quotes were taken from the emergency spokesman at the scene who has seen the bodies (You're not going to make that up are you?). You can't get a better source than that. Let's face it, the BBC nearly always get the news wrong. In fact whenever a disaster happens, there are differences in the stats they give every hour (going up, then down, then up again etc,...) . They never wait until they have the answers as they always want to be the first to report (which I can understand).

The military thinks that a controlled explosion will clean up the sewers, but they didn't manage to fix the problem before the whole thing collapsed. There is also a risk that more of there holes can appear around the city. - Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Someone aaaactuuaally tried to dig a whole through the earth, whoa!!!
- Evanmontegarde, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Anyone else think "EMERGENCE HOLE!" as soon as they read the title? I've been playing too much Gears of War...
- Xavarri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9They'd better throw a grenade in before things get ugly.
- sparkleton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Emergence day!
- BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And it was such a nice neighborhood before the sinkhole appeared.
- UrbanVoyeur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Looks like that whole neighborhood is built on top of a sub-ter cavern that may have a stream under there as well. Looks like the sewer leak washed away the the top 10-20 m of loose soil. The underground water table did the rest. A few good storms or more water leaks, or a tremor and that hole will widen dramatically.
They might try to inject concrete to stabilize some of the edges of the cavern opening - once they find them. But that neighborhood looks like loss. - deadcow231, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Somebody said that this was Earth imitating Goatse. So I got one question. Where's the blood?
- coldskool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Reminds me of my ex..
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6After I got done with her.
- Yashu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have seen enough sci-fi TV to know for a fact that "sinkhole" is only a coverup for some sort of accident while experimenting with alien technology!
- zanvann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65Damn you ceiling cat...DAMN YOU!
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/2651/mantlecatvt2.jpg- gottatufa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Must be hunting that giant Guatemalan rat that made the hole. Nice job.
- JoCliMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Shoot, I used to have this fear as a child, a giant hole suddenly opening up and swallowing me, but as I grew older, I dismissed it as childish thoughts...Thanks a lot digg for bringing my phobia back
- DoctorLex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually once dreamt about a swimming pool that drained through a quite small hole in the floor. Then the whole floor collapsed and everyone fell into a sinkhole that looked like this one, only slightly bigger. It was large enough to easily swallow the Empire State Building three times. I wonder what I ate or drank the evening before...
