German academic compares Scientologists to Nazis
afp.google.com — BERLIN (AFP) — Respected German historian Guido Knopp has compared a speech by US actor Tom Cruise to the Church of Scientology with a call to war by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.

I think most of the lame assholes digging this ***** are christians! What does walking on water, virginal births, or feeding multitudes from a few fish and a few loaves of bread sound more likely? How about rising from the dead in BODY and going to heaven? WTF! Dumbasses. If you really want attention you need to go for the jugular...go get the christians and buddhists....now were talking!
Burried....
I am not a christian or scientologist, I'm an atheist.

- Fordi, on 01/21/2008, -1/+1You know what?
Sure, scientology sounds ridiculous, but that's fine - Christianity sounds ridiculous as well, and it's a nicely established religion. I don't particularly feel comfortable with their tactic towards critics of ad hominem as policy, nor do I think it's cool that they won't respond to simple questions like, "Some view you as a cult, why do you think that is?"
Their courses cost a lot, but a tithe is a tithe; if you're going to bitch about that, bitch about the collection plate, too.
Meanwhile, they prey on recovering drug addicts - but so do some sects of Christianity, like seventh day's.
Anyway, this has been a meandering post. My first reaction to this article:
Epic Godwin. - SuperWinner, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2So, yer saying comparing Nazis to scientologists is an insult to Nazis? I agree!!

- Baofu, on 01/20/2008, -2/+55Although the comparison may seem shocking and perhaps somewhat inappropriate, there's a similarity between the totalitarian ideology in "national socialism" and scientology.
- jumbojett, on 01/20/2008, -1/+12Totally agree, tom should be ashamed of himself and publicly apologize for being so stupid.
- adequateftw, on 01/20/2008, -0/+6That, and for making this speech.

- KentAllard, on 01/20/2008, -14/+3I don't think the CoS advocate fascism, national-socialism, etc so this is just the usual mud throwing that the term nazi gets used for, BUT they certainly are totalitarians!
And the July 20 Plot is totally bogus, Prussian aristocrats wanting to protect their positions when things turned bad - they didn't give a ***** about Jews, democracy, etc. No different to people who supported invading Iraq but now complain about it 'costing too much'.- Lyph5, on 01/20/2008, -1/+4I don't think it's comparing their politics, but more of how they act and move, how they talk.
- SabrinaHeaven, on 01/20/2008, -5/+1If the only thing that mattered were how they acted, moved, and talked, the Nazi Party would be a fantastic role model.

- statrick, on 01/20/2008, -2/+10Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air
In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suite case and send me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket.
I put my walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'.
First class, yo this is bad
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass.
Is this what the people of Bel-Air Living like?
Hmmmmm this might be alright.
But wait I hear there're prissy, wine all that
Is Bel-Air the type of place they send this cool cat?
I don't think sow
I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air
Well, the plane landed and when I came out
There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out
I ain't trying to get arrested
I just got here
I sprang with the quickness like lightening, disappeared
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rare
But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'
I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air- Ramble, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1Some of those words are incorrect.

I'm sick of 3 stories per page being about scientology, it's getting ridiculous.- SabrinaHeaven, on 01/20/2008, -16/+0No, I think Scientology is less delusional, less dangerous, and much more useful than Christianity.

- buttle, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1in the article, propaganda wasn't mentioned. the comparison to nazis came from scientologists saying they "should clean up the world." you are simply wrong if you think that scientologists are hoping to clean up the world the same way that nazis were.
- Space_Balls, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1And you need to learn how to comprehend Articles.
The point of the Comparison is the famous Goebbels "Wollt Ihr den totalen Krieg? (Do you want Total War)" speech, where everyone is seen screaming "yes", compared with the Video (which I admit to not seeing) of Tom Cruise in front of a crowd, enthusiastically cheering in much the same manner.

- trollhunter, on 01/22/2008, -0/+0buttle - who agreed? was there a meeting? there is NO agreement like that. if you mean godwin's law then go find out what godwin's law is.
The nazis did a lot more than exterminate people (although that was the low point in their campaign - as well as the medical experiments). They also utilized propaganda to amazing effect - the uniforms, imagery, speeches and hyperbole were incredible. They created and then demonized a "common enemy" - the Jews.
They brutalized the German people (stormtroopers) until they won power then they went on to brutalize the rest of the Europe.
It is important to remember the Nazi movement and the damage and pain and death they caused because we will see these patterns again and again. If we can see it coming, we may be able to stop it in time.

- opiniastrous, on 01/21/2008, -2/+2No way. It's a stupid joke that keeps getting repeated (once or twice is enough guys). For a start, a comment wouldn't violate copyright. A copyright is automatically created when you create a musical, dramatic, literary work (etc.), and prevents other people copying that work for their profit (there are various 'fair use' conditions you can copy them for). Hence, unless those Diggers were replicating a book L.Ron or Scientology created, or something like that, Scientology couldn't claim an infringement of its rights.

so, why is there so much force used to suppress negative info on Scientology?
simple; when the minions at the bottom put all the pieces together they will see they are part of a cult. Then the bubble bursts.
And to all of the agents in this thread; you may feel that your special role here makes you a better person, you are being conned.
please wake up.
thetans did not exist before Hubbard dreamed them up so he could fool people into..........giving them all their money. He hates psychology only because it is necessary to rubbish the competition.

No wonder they are so fearful of critics! - Insouciere, on 01/20/2008, -5/+0You tell 'em bootes. The degraded nature of the anti-religion comments to be found here speak loudly as to the nature of the speakers. The question is...WHAT DID YOU DO!!! Why do you act so guilty?
- spawnfree, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1is this the 'what are your crimes' doctrine?
its designed to make people feel guilty and insecure.
and when i am in this vulnerable state my argument may disappear, i may even desire the solution to this guilt i am feeling.
the solution is Scientology of course.
So by using this mode of attack you stand a good chance of losing a critic or gaining a new minion.
I, however, know what you are trying to do. You get my middle finger.
- spawnfree, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1is this the 'what are your crimes' doctrine?
- FeargusMcDuff, on 01/20/2008, -2/+5What the ***** Digg, are we having a super Scientology weekend?
- FullTangViper, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4they pissed off Anonymous so it's the Internet vs Scientology until the Internet wins basically
- realtag, on 01/20/2008, -0/+7I am German - and let me tell you something about Guido Knopp - he is in fact a renowed figure on the subject of ww2 history - but also, and more importantly, he is known for cheap publicity stunts. The hint however is in the details...the "German Newspaper" is a very lowbrow tabloid called "Bild".
Be that as it may, I don't like the church either. And I don't like people "cleaning up the place" because doctrine induced Scientologists are not the kind of people I'trust into getting it right for everybody. In fact I would trust no individual institution to "clean up the place" but rather have democracy decide what's best for everybody (still the least of all evils).
As for alleged Nazi Television shows in Germany: Get a life. I admit that (foremost the east part of) Germany has a problem with a growing number of Nazis. But after WW2 they are so morally discredited that nobody in his right mind wants to do business with them - leave alone, get the a TV show. In some parts Hotels have begun to outright refusing them entry to the premises (now you are left to argue if we are intolerant because we discriminate against Nazis :))) )- eryximachus, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1"But after WW2 they are so morally discredited that nobody in his right mind wants to do business with them - leave alone, get the a TV show."
Hmm, I think you might be a bit wrong about that. Mein Kampf is still a popular book in most of the world, and the message of exploitation by international financial interests as well as the right of national identity and sovereignty is quite popular amongst the countries the US and the UK have raped.
People aren't stupid - most ignore Anglo-American propaganda. They see themselves as fighting an enormous power that today is weakening. If anything, it is quite amazing a little country the size of Texas was able to fight almost the entire world for six years and come so close to victory.
The holocaust means nothing to most people in the world. Only Americans and Europeans are dumb enough to believe the ironic claim that that Germany, a small country, was trying to conquer the world - a world largely enslaved by the British.
Unfortunately, your country has been under military occupation for 60 years. It is understandable you would like to ignore the truth.- realtag, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Interesting viewpoint. Military occupation ended 1989 with the downfall of the Berlin Wall actually - since then I was fortunate enough to make up my mind about some of this since then. You should try it too. It might clear up your confusion about things.
- opiniastrous, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Wow. I second realtag's comment. Interesting comment, though not for its insight.
Mein Kampf is not really that popular. Disregarding the various European countries in which it is illegal to sell or possess the book, Mein Kampf probably only sells around 50,000 copies a year, which is minuscule in the grand scheme of things (though when it was translated into Turkish in 2005, it did sell 100,000 copies that year). Many of those copies are probably bought by history students, such as an old university friend of mine, or people interested in it from a historical perspective. Lots of white supremacists, etc. actually dislike Hitler now (effectively believing he failed them, that his ideals were off, and probably also because they dislike being considered the Nazi's 'descendants'), so I doubt they're buying the copies.
Now, I've lost your message a little here. You're not too clear about what you think. However, I don't see why it is so unbelievable that Germany could fight so many countries for so long. Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe, and it raised a (superb) army of 7 million men in WWII. Also, there were long periods of war in which Germany was not having to hold off invasions, but simply supply the armies in Russia (and the Red Army was very poorly equipped) and North Africa. Obviously, that's an oversimplification, but it effectively rains true; D-Day only came well towards the end of the war.
Oh yes, you seem to connect the Holocaust with the idea of world conquest. Really, they are two separate (though connected) elements.
Finally, and as realtag said, Germany hasn't been under occupation for 60 years.
I'd probably say more if I understood the full meaning of your comment, as I'm just sure that whatever it is (I can somewhat piece it together), you're wrong. - trollhunter, on 01/22/2008, -0/+0yeah yeah yeah Main Kampf is popular. It is a historical curiousity (for some it is a philosophical treatise..... so is Lolita, American Psycho, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Letters to Penthouse Vol 1. Go figure...)
I like "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" but you won't see me out there hunting "replicants"... ok?

- zaxang, on 01/20/2008, -0/+10What's up with the Scientology craze on digg lately? never used to see anything about Scientology on here in the past, but recently there has been a spike in interest in it. I'm glad, really, because the whole thing's messed up. It's just weird.
- davecor, on 01/20/2008, -0/+6Part of it started with a posting that announced Friday's DDOS attack against scientology.org. As I write this (5pm CST Sunday) the site is still down.
Note that digg removed several posts about this attack, including some that were only discussions ABOUT the attack, no links or instructions.
Plus, it's a lot of fun shining the spotlight on these wackos.- Shananra, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1I must have missed that. I didn't know there was such an attack going on.
- SuperWinner, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1ahahaha, well I think this is almost as funny as when digg took down godhatesfags.com, no one deserves it more than Tom and the other scientology *****

You do realize that your remark "WHAT DID YOU DO!! Why do you act so guilty" is the #1 tactic ScientLOLogists use to avoid meaningful debate and criticism by turning the focus away from LHR's 'flawless and unquestionable' truths and attacking the questioner who has EVERY RIGHT to question something that allows for NO DEVIATION from the ***** rhetoric of a hack science fiction writer. It's called free speech folks, and I may not agree with what everyone has to say, but I'll fight for the right for you so say it....as long as you're not forcing it down my own ***** throat because I do not have to think your P.O.V. is the only right one.- dondara, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1I have dealt with CoS wacko's a few times and that is one of their first moves when you begin to question things. My father told me that when you are told not to question something it must be *****. I think the word is spreading on these criminals. Even crackheads know who they are and scam they are trying to sell. Let's hope somewhere a DA is growing a set of balls big enough to take these assholes down.

- dupswapdrop, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3The Church of Scientology is just a tax dodge you give them a large sum of money they claim it as a donation you get 90% back as cash. All the rest is BS to fend of the IRS.
- caponumen, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Do you have to have the black lizard eyes to get in?
- charlietuna, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1I'll pass on this.
- solid12345, on 01/21/2008, -3/+2Why is everyone so concerned about scientology? Tom Cruise is alot like Jack Thompson, you all bitch about him but at the end of the day he is irrelevant and so is scientology with its what, 100,000 members world-wide? I think the Jedi religion in Australia has more members than that.
- charlietuna, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3It's not irrelevant to the people who are are harassed and threatened by cult members.
- trollhunter, on 01/22/2008, -0/+0The growth/spread of ANY mind-control cult is worth being concerned about. The Jedis in Oz are a sort of joke against the census. The tactics and psychological manipulation of the Scientoligists is NO joke.
