Georgia ''planned S. Ossetia invasion'' : US Looks Stupid
reuters.com — Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili had long planned a military strike to seize back the breakaway region of South Ossetia but executed it poorly, making it easy for Russia to retaliate, Saakashvili's former...

- SRSco, on 09/14/2008, -6/+1Yeah...how stupid of a democratically elected president to militarily gain control of a region run by crime lords and smugglers that belongs to his country's sovereign territory. What a moron! What was he thinking!?
Saakashvili had every right to do what he did. The US does not seem stupid. YOU, on the other hand, seem stupid, for buying all the anti-Georgian propaganda the Kremlin has put out, and Digg has been so willing to accept.- JPHR, on 09/14/2008, -1/+4Democratically elected is no guarantee for sainthood, you might just ask the Georgian opposition.
Some history and please check Wikipedia:
1918-1921 short lived democratic republic of Georgia (DRG)
1921-1991 Georgia part of the USSR
1991 bloody ethnic war Georgia-Ossetia
1992-2008 Ossetia under Russia/Cis peacekeeping mission
So that nationalistic American trained lawyer Saakashvili (elected on his promise to retake Ossetia and Abkhazia) is basing his claims on the situation before 1921. Do you realize how many borders all over the world have been redrawn since 1921. Do you agree that this kind of claim is simply out of touch with reality?
Never ever did White House/Bush/Perino/Cheney statements reflect this reality. They preferred to portray this as David against Goliath. So intentionally omitting facts and using misleading language only served to cover up their own meddling. Apart from very few semi impartial news items US media gathered behind the "leader" Bush. Has Iraq and the totally unnecessary deaths of those 4000+ US soldiers learned you some lesson with respect to the White House propaganda.
Read Pat Buchanan for geopolitical background: http://buchanan.org/blog/2008/08/pjb-blowback-from ...
Mr. Saakashvili has knowingly put at risk a population which he claimed as his own simply for his own nationalistic political gain. Saakashvili is not different from Milosevic (which was also democratically elected by the way) and he should go to the Hague instead of an endowment chair at the American Enterprise Institute.
If you are honest enough (at least to yourself) to acknowledge that you may have been misled again by Bush, start reading Victor Bugliosi or read the impeachment articles by Rep Kunich.- SRSco, on 09/14/2008, -1/+1I'm well aware of Georgian/Ossetian history. Don't point me to pundits like Buchanan for "geopolitical background."
The mere fact that you compare Saakashvili to Milosevic makes you irrational, so I'm not going to respond to your *****. Thanks for automatically assuming that I don't know anything, just because I disagree. Also thanks for assuming I'm a supporter of Bush. I am not.
What would you like then? For all regions of sovereign nations who want autonomy and independence to be granted it? Do you know how many countries we'd have in the world? And do you know how many of them would be governed by either incompetents or radicals?

- supapi, on 09/14/2008, -1/+4Saakashvili is a corrupt puppet, that is all. He is a cowardly bitch, as seen from the CNN footage when he was cowering under armored blankets. This is what Georgians get for electing a New York Lawyer to represent them. Before spewing ignorance read some history of the region, Ossetia has been a proud and independent nation for hundreds of years. It was another nasty Georgian by the name of Joseph Stalin that sealed Ossetias fate and force annexed Ossetia and Abkhazia and other small regions to Georgia. It is ironic and sad to see USA and some of the West blindly support STALINS LEGACY. BTW Why is no one in the western press mentions STALIN?! What Russians did by defending Ossetia is prevent genocide of thousands of innocent people. Please explain and justify why Georgians pulled up their GRAD systems to the outskirts of Tskhinvali and simply started shelling peacefull town with rockets... Please explain why Georgian soldiers were throwing grenades into basements of residential buildings where Ossetians were hiding from this massacre. Please explain why a so called "Democratic Regime" needs to kill civilians and genecide the ethnic majority of the region (Ossetia). The evidence is abundant and hard to supress and Saakashvilis days are over, the blood of the innocents will weigh him down, and the West will hopefully learn to pick better allies than bloodthirsty little nationalists with Napoleons Complex.
- justgrey, on 09/14/2008, -1/+4Georgian goverment deserves a Democracy, not a puppet regime. Even Saakashvilis cronies will abandon him once they realized they squeezed every possible dollar of bribe money from the American Taxpayers. BTW, did anyone ask the American People if they wanted to give One Billion Dollars to this executioner of the Ossetian people? Whose pocket is that coming out of?
