- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -14/+68George Mason University chicks must be fugly as hell.
- mushoo, on 02/21/2009, -2/+52Because morality was so rampant back in the days when we lynched black people and no one did anything about it.
- harrythe3rd, on 02/21/2009, -1/+36I'm sure it was probably in pretty good fun. It's college who gives a *****? I live right around there and its pretty good kids and only about 8 minutes out of georgetown
- videodroner, on 02/21/2009, -3/+36Oh boo hoo.
They are college students and they are all adults perfectly capable of choosing what's right and what's wrong. Are they harming anyone? No.
Save your energy and anger for when you read an article that says "School shooting at _____________ University," where it's really needed. - zbeast, on 02/21/2009, -3/+30You go girl!
- str1fe, on 02/21/2009, -1/+24And what is so "wrong" about this situation? I'd say morality has come a long way in the past century. As mushoo said, it was only about 50-60 years ago that black people were lynched every day and nothing was ever done about it. We're finally getting to the point where homosexuals are treated more as equals. Not quite there yet, but we're a hell of a lot closer than we were a decade ago.
I don't think tolerating and accepting alternative lifestyles is immoral at all - I think it's just the opposite. Who are you to decide something is immoral just because it's different from what you believe? There are plenty of things I disapprove of, but I don't see any good reason to disapprove of this story's situation - just one bad reason: ignorance. - RJ0534, on 02/21/2009, -0/+21"Ryan Allen, competing under his drag queen persona of Reann Ballslee"
Ballslee? - hokie47, on 02/21/2009, -1/+19What if the homecoming king was a women? Now that would be a mind *****.
- TheTrueSora, on 02/21/2009, -7/+24Hey, I voted for the guy. I think it's both hysterical from a faux-"fight the power!" perspective but also important from a LGBT perspective, because it shows that we're blind to gender roles.
- LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -1/+17Ah, yes. The good old days. When only good straight Christian white people could get a home loan.
/s - LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -3/+18Or they just liked him better as a candidate.
Nah, you're right, let's go with the anti-tolerance angle. - winterspan, on 02/21/2009, -1/+16Actually, "we are raising" a generation of kids who recognize the false "morality" of the past which was really self-righteous, xenophobic, homophobic, insular bigotry and discrimination. This generation is learning that true morality and "right vs wrong" has nothing to do with sexual piety, sexual preference, etc.
True morality is about tolerance, understanding, love and compassion for all people and forms of life on earth, selfless acts of kindness, giving yourself to charity and altruism instead of ego-centric pursuits of greed and great wealth, etc.
In other words, WHAT JESUS SAID! How do you "Christians" not understand this?
Thank god the self-righteous, hateful, and divisive stranglehold of (conservative/evangelical) "Christianity" on America has finally been loosening... - TheTrueSora, on 02/21/2009, -5/+20Wait, men and women have different sexual organs?! No way. Could've fooled me.
No. But I will go start cooking myself and my girlfriend some dinner. She gets home from work soon. - bmtran, on 02/21/2009, -3/+18he's more of a queen than any girl will ever be
- AlienMushroom, on 02/21/2009, -2/+16Then a female homecoming king?
- AustinHannah, on 02/21/2009, -3/+14Oh, hey, I met this guy last week. He is pretty deserving of the title.
- legoalert33, on 02/21/2009, -2/+13That's not your mother, it's a man, baby!
- LilJimmyNordin, on 02/21/2009, -1/+12That's not a "gender role", idiot. That's a biological gender function. Gender roles are societally-established, plastic and only as important as we make them. In the end, nobody of any character actually cares who ends up homecoming queen. These kids have shown appropriate reverence to the tradition of homecoming queen, which is to say "none at all".
- indycolts88, on 02/20/2009, -1/+11He played the part well.
- videodroner, on 02/21/2009, -2/+12This has nothing to do with Conservatives and Liberals. I'm a conservative myself and I completely disagree with what he said. It's about the fact that Wolf73b is a close-minded moron.
- prodigitalson, on 02/21/2009, -2/+11Silence! The conservatards have spoken!
- KDyneria, on 02/21/2009, -0/+9Really? Goochland County?
- FoxtrotYankee, on 02/21/2009, -0/+9Well -- you see -- traditionally, homecoming queens are girls. This time a boy won it. So, it's notable. Notable things make the news and news items get posted to Digg.
Did I make that simple enough for you? - Mystlyfe, on 02/21/2009, -1/+10From a Cinderella story in the NCAA tourney to a whole different kind of Cinderella...
- Natfly, on 02/21/2009, -2/+11Maybe if you left your dorm room you'd find some. You are either in the wrong major or don't socialize if the only hot GMU girls you've seen are Japanese.
- ConnisKasman, on 02/21/2009, -0/+8I was waiting for the /s but it never came... and then I saw your moronic name and thought it was funny again. Atheists are idiots how? Oh, that's right I forgot that believing in supernatural things you can not see, hear or feel makes you smart.
- d3sapar3cid0, on 02/21/2009, -0/+8drag queen names are always pretty wonderful and ridiculous.
- LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -1/+9I know, right? The NERVE of this university to show respect to people that are different! The NERVE!
- WinMacLin, on 02/21/2009, -2/+9Congratulations to her, I mean him, I mean her, I mean him.
- AndrewDB, on 02/21/2009, -0/+7That's awesome. Good for Him/His Female persona. :]
- kmblacka, on 02/21/2009, -5/+12I think it's amazing
- lostlo, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6My dad always told me about how he helped get a drag queen elected Homecoming Queen at Duke in the 70s. Glad to know the practice is making a comeback.
- videodroner, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6Well... I'll digg you up for effort.
- TheTrueSora, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6No, it's not at all. I live on campus. No one cares. Stop sensationalizing because you disagree with the viewpoint.
- sittered, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6atheistsRidiots: I will assume from the amount of time you spend on the internet that you are not married. I will go on to presume that you have no children. Since you're not going to convert any adults who have the slightest amount of common sense, I deem you both irrelevant and as harmless as a neutered cat.
- mikey683, on 02/21/2009, -1/+6Well Wolf73b she's probably more woman than you'll ever get and more man than you'll ever be.
- Cheesecrunch, on 02/21/2009, -1/+6@LordVance - The halfies always look the best.
- TheAnarchist, on 02/21/2009, -2/+7Hope those girls don't go and hang themselves over the fact that they've been beat by a guy that looks more feminine than they do.
- d3sapar3cid0, on 02/21/2009, -0/+5Pretty true. People don't seem to realize the intense blurring of actual gender these days. Nearly one in every 100 people is born transgendered in some way, minor or major. There are actually a lot of different versions than Vagina+***** and *****+balls.
In the end, gender is really just a social construct that only really matters in terms of pregnancy these days. You must be a girl to push out a baby, but that's about it. - AustinHannah, on 02/21/2009, -1/+6Jesus raped me.
- x2cprincess, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4@ UNCsucks
The statistic according to the APA is actually closer to 1 out of every 1,500 births. Here's the citation:
http://www.apa.org/topics/intersx.html
The correct term for this is actually intersex.
Transgender is a blanket term for individuals whose gender identity is different from the identity of their birth sex. From there you get into the differences between sex and gender. Sex is the biological characteristics; gender is the expression of an identity as a male or female.
Sooo... the prevalence of intersexed births contributes to the fact that individuals may have been born a man, yet feel more at home with the gender identity of a woman, all stemming from biological reasons.
So for all intents and purposes, d3sapar3cid0 is correct (with the exception of the exact statistic). Use that citation as a jumping off point and really look into it for yourself. Gender identity is a fascinating subject with many facets to it. - tgjerusalem, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4For clarification, can you please explain exactly what ethical infraction you think is going on here?
- Toriach, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4Wow! Nice to know that mindlessly knuckle dragging homophobia is alive and well. Personally I think that home coming hoo haw is all a bit silly and never got into it myself. But I think it's neat that he had the guts to run and that his fellow students were open minded enough to vote for him.
- moxley, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4Let's hear your defintion of "morality" Wolf73b...
Let's hear it...You tell all of us what you think Morality means....Because I would be willing to bet that whatever you type in (if you don't ignore the question, which is probably the most likely thing you'll do) will have nothing to do with morality and will be a definition for something other than "morality." - sageerrant, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4Do you think Ballslee doesn't know that?
Ladydude doesn't mind, so why should you?
This isn't the college movie situation where the unconventional only happens as part of some hurtful prank. Some people have a sense of humor, others voted him in simply for having the balls to run, and some others... well, maybe the opposition isn't that impressive. - sargeras, on 02/21/2009, -4/+8Besides the japanese exchange students, yeah, we have it pretty bad over here.
- LordVance, on 02/21/2009, -1/+4Can I has some too?
- prodigitalson, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3@videodrone:
Then you are not a conservatard... at least not given the evidence. All conservatives are not conservatards, just as all liberals are not libtards. There are however a unique subset of each that can be called such. - dwninjungleland, on 02/21/2009, -1/+4I go to another school in the region.
We don't have a homecoming queen. I didn't know anyone had that in college.
Also, our homecoming's in the fall, like most schools. I'm pretty confused about a lot of aspects of this story. -
