George Bush to push $20bn Saudi weapons deal
telegraph.co.uk — US president George W. Bush is to promise $20 billion in advanced weaponry to Saudi Arabia as he travels through the Gulf states to garner support for further sanctions against Iran. The weapons deal, which is to include precision-guided missiles, first surfaced last autumn but was postponed over opposition in the US Congress.

- pehpsi, on 01/14/2008, -3/+91Good old Mr. Bush, continuing to arm the world. I like how he mixes peace missions, with weapons flogging. What a class act.
- AlienMushroom, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8One fights another. Both go to him for weapon. That's how he makes money :).
- andy3109, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6wait wait...is this story accurate? This is bordering on lunacy if it is.
- mangopork, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3Yeah, it is. Our foreign policy has been like this for 50 years.
We need to vote Ron Paul....

- bitcloud, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6Ah comment abuse, but noone in this whole thread has mentioned that:
THE PEOPLE WHO ATTACKED ON 911 WERE ***** SAUDI'S!!!

- arplayer2k, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1He took the movie Lord of War to his head.
- WestonP, on 01/14/2008, -7/+68Is it really any wonder why the world hates us, or why we have such problems in the middle east, when we arm most of the countries in that region, including sworn enemies of each other? This is completely absurd.
And, of course, you can guess who is the only Republican candidate who dares to speak up against this blatant war-mongering... Ron Paul- OffPiste, on 01/14/2008, -15/+2Right....That's why they're all running around with M4's oh wait they all carry AK's? Colt Arms makes AK's right....Wait what? AK's are made in Russia?
- Neoanarchist, on 01/14/2008, -1/+17Don't be ignorant. We paid for those AKs during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and numerous other situations. Just because it's not our weapons, doesn't mean we didn't put them there.
- OffPiste, on 01/14/2008, -8/+2You are sadly mistaken. We are talking about Saudi Arabia.
- CannedMango, on 01/14/2008, -1/+8Bu...b...bu...bu...but Russia!!
Note to OffPiste: If other countries want to help ***** up the middle east, then let them take the fallout for it. But don't use it as an excuse to claim that America is somehow validated in their contributions to the ongoing wars. - WestonP, on 01/14/2008, -1/+7Your argument doesn't even make sense. Pretty much everybody makes AK's anymore, and regardless of their country of origin, we paid for them. We also armed the new Iraqi military with AK's... of course, they "somehow" fell into the hands of the insurgents, who we had been accusing Iran of arming.
- Randrayla, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3Actually we are in the process of arming the Iraqi army and police with American financed M16s. So basically that just makes OffPiste look even more foolish.
- Neoanarchist, on 01/14/2008, -1/+17Don't be ignorant. We paid for those AKs during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and numerous other situations. Just because it's not our weapons, doesn't mean we didn't put them there.
- rarson, on 01/14/2008, -1/+1You Paul supporters are a bunch of naive morons. They hate us because we're free. Why can't you understand that?
/obvious sarcasm

- hellokittyownsu, on 01/14/2008, -2/+5Stop throwing ***** at the constitution Mr. President.
- RRJackson, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Actually, this may have been a pretty smart move. The country is on the brink of a really nasty recession. A contract like this will employ a lot of people, presumably in the home states of Republicans running for re-election this year. It's a good way to keep a lot of Republicans voting Republican in an election year.
- Groovemaster, on 01/14/2008, -2/+24I wonder if Americans would prefer it their representative government double-checks with the population when blowing the vast majority of their tax dollars on war.
It must really suck being little more than an easily controlled money-making device for the corporate elite.- PhantomZmoove, on 01/14/2008, -0/+13As a matter of fact, it does suck being us. Thanks for noticing.
- Waterrat, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3 It sure does...If you'd like to help us immigrate to your country and give us jobs...That would be so cool. j/k/

- Minutemanjones, on 01/14/2008, -4/+18Does this man not understand that we are going broke through this mindless act and many other acts like it?
No he doesn't.- Groovemaster, on 01/14/2008, -0/+14Actually, yes he does.
But does he care?
No he doesn't.
Are the corporate interests he serves getting richer and richer because of what he's doing?
Yes they are.- Waterrat, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2 And in the end, that's the whole point of this whole mess...
Then they will have a recession which will mean more money for the higheeer ups and the a depression,so they can get yet more land and homes away from the people to sell to make more money and drive us closer and closer to serfdom.
i suspect within 25 years,it will be as bad for the American worker as it is for most of the Chinese workers.

- OffPiste, on 01/14/2008, -2/+10Umm the Saudis are BUYING 20Bil in arms. This requires governmental approval for foreign arms sales. I'll accept an argument against this but you seem to think we are giving the Saudis 20B in arms, this is wrong. PLease read and UNDERSTAND the article again.
- Linua, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5look at who profits, that is all
- archivist, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2he doesnt.
- Groovemaster, on 01/14/2008, -0/+14Actually, yes he does.
- UnstableMind, on 01/14/2008, -3/+45Dear George, please send me some money. I'm pretty sure I could use it more than some oil-rich country wanting to blow something up. As a matter of fact, we had to raise our property taxes this year so we could build a new school for our children. Can you believe it, we have to pay taxes on property we already own. I couldn't either.
Sincerely,
Average American Citizen- Neoanarchist, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6Amen
- captaindigger, on 01/14/2008, -0/+10I wish i could digg that twice.
- AntBing, on 01/14/2008, -0/+14Dear Average Citizen, due to the fact the I spent all of the taxpayers money on trying to finish the war my daddy started, but could not finish, I cannot send you any money. Now, why don't you go back to being concerned with what Ashley Simpson will name her bastard child.
Sincerely,
George - SpykerSpeed, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6I can't believe we even bother having a public school system, let alone pay taxes on stuff we already own.
- Randrayla, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Dont forget, the money you use to pay your property tax... has already been taxed... Funny how they get you twice isn't it?

- darkfalz, on 01/14/2008, -1/+15This is cool because it's something I actually know about. I was on the Navy ship that stopped in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for this. We pulled in (supposedly first Navy ship in 10+ years), a ***** ton of dignitaries and whatnot came on board, talked to our CO and some other US representation about selling the AEGIS weapons system. They didn't really tell us much more than that. But hey, here's a picture of me standing super ultra anti-terrorist watch:

- sLm4ever, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2MARK my words, "erkyng2003" is an idiot that can't tell the different between the Saudi gov. and the punch of stupid terrorists that happened to be from Saudi Arabia =P
- redsrule2500, on 01/14/2008, -8/+15This is ALMOST as bad as when Clinton armed China and advanced their military 40 years.
- maddhopps, on 01/14/2008, -1/+4From what I've been reading about East Asian economics and politics, although there is defense competition among China and Japan, it is quite unlikely that either will become internationally aggressive with their militaries. The purposes are mainly defensive and trying to look stronger than the other. [Kishore Mahbubani, ambassador of Singapore to the UN, "When Asia Emerges, How Will the World Change?"]
- philthiest, on 01/14/2008, -1/+5Huh... I guess I forgot that 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were Chinese.
Oh that's right, they weren't. They were Saudi Arabian.- sLm4ever, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2sure...
0.00000000015% of Saudis were terrorists ... not 0.00000000015% of Chinese were terrorists
- sLm4ever, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2sure...
- GuacamoleSan, on 01/14/2008, -3/+21We're talking about the same Saudi Arabia that just beheaded a person in public with a sword..right

- sLm4ever, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2naah ... we won't use it ... using the sword is cooler

- maddhopps, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Ummm... The Saudis are the ones paying Bush and Cheney to screw with the other oil-producing countries. Bush has no interest in any aggression/sanction against Saudi Arabia whatsoever.
- rarson, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Doesn't matter. None of our allies plan on being enemies. If the situation arises where it's advantageous for us to attack the people we've armed, we'll do it.
Note that I completely disagree with this kind of foreign policy!

- daxsymbiont, on 01/14/2008, -3/+15Saudi Arabia is the most fundamentalist islamist country in the world with actual monarchy, absolute power to the monarch, and the country that has spawned most actual terrorists. Yet, they are "friends" of the US. Coincidentally they have the most oil in the world.
At the same time, Obama the possible Bush successor may be Black but he isn't Angel. In the last Democratic debate he openly and clearly said he would strike in Pakistan without the country's consent. Militarist extremism is sadly even in the so called "left" of the US. - hellbent88, on 01/14/2008, -1/+20get that ***** head out of office

- hangtown2004, on 01/14/2008, -0/+7Oh good Yet I bet they keep raising the price of there oil. And no doubt some of those weapons will wind up being used against our people. ***** BUSH!!
- scabbers, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6Wait.. is it GIVE or SELL?
- Linua, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2Does it matter?
- CannedMango, on 01/14/2008, -2/+38So let me get this straight, just so I'm clear on this...
George Bush says:
• Iran greatest threat to world peace!
• I [personally] don't believe the NIE report is correct
• Hey Saudia Arabia, didn't you help carry out 9/11? Here's more *****' weapons!
• God speaks to me directly, it turns out, he *hates* all of us.
• I can't manage a company or a baseball team, but I understand foreign policy better than all experts.
• In fact, foreign policy isn't even an issue anymore... so what if Iraq isn't going well, the REAL issue is the American econonmy. Oh, that and we have to spy on all Americans to protect your freedom and liberty. Don't worry is that sounds contradictory, when I think about it I find a way for it to make sense.
• Don't worry about wiretapping or government sanctioned torture, let's talk about how important it is to protect the flag. Oh, I don't mean patriotism or the spirit of America... I mean the actual fabric that an individual flag is made of. People who abuse the flag are bad! Do we all agree? Good. Now let's all chug down a tall glass of my piss.
• Thanks for electing me again! (I sort of cheated, but I'm going to call it a "landslide). Now let's all destroy social security... I'm pretty sure that was the reason you elected me.
• Hey, remember all of those crimes I committed. I just made it legal for me to have done them all. If *you* try em though... I'm pretty much sure you're going to prison. Good luck with that!
• etc.
I may be paraphrasing, but I'm pretty sure those are all exact quotes. - wuzupfoo11, on 01/14/2008, -1/+19so to "spread democracy" in the middle east, we are giving a monarchy weapons? yay for ***** foreign policy
- wisam, on 01/14/2008, -8/+3Your own problem is that it's a monarchy? I guess according to your logic trusting Britain is as stupid.
- rarson, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3I say we boo ***** foreign policy.
- wisam, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5It's worth mentioning that Saudi Arabia's army is probably the most over equipped yet under trained army in the world. They simply don't have enough trained personnels to operate the machineries and weapons they buy.
- Idiggapony, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3I don't think it matters to them much. They certainly don't need the weapons. The U.S. sells weapons to Saudi Arabia at greatly overinflated prices. The Saudi prices who organize the deals write in commissions for themselves, making themselves even richer in the process. Then they hand big sums of cash to the American politicians, of both major parties, who arrange the deal on the American side.
- solid12345, on 01/14/2008, -2/+2A good example is Syria and Egypt in the six day war. They had brand new Soviet MiG's and T-72 tanks yet their operators were idiots who could barely put the tanks in reverse to escape from the IDF.
- soot, on 01/14/2008, -0/+12What a hypocrite. You cannot promote peace in the middle east on one hand while pushing for weapons proliferation on the other.
- geddon, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2I'm fairly certain that Bush correlates weapons proliferation with peace and Democracy.
- Qtip42, on 01/14/2008, -6/+10Great, give weapons to the place where MOST of the 9/11 attackers came from! GREAT THINKING THURR BUSHY.

- Linua, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3I honestly worry about my health living so near thousands of tons of sarin gas being stored and "disposed of" here in Alabama. Now, you have to think, what do I care more about, other countries having them, or having them so close to where me and mine live? Trace amounts have been found in the water supply here according to a recent survey, although it's a very very small amount, still, what do you think I worry about more, them having them 3 thousands miles away, or the water me and mine drink?
- tiraspol, on 01/14/2008, -2/+4I take this kind of funny...I mean...on the part where I just finished watching Lord of War and it talks about Bush supplying more weapons to countries then Nicholas Cage did in the movie.

- manicdvln, on 01/14/2008, -3/+4It's just business guys, get in touch with reality. War profits the few, and the few are in power right now. - sLm4ever, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2and do you actually believe their reasons for starting wars !? ...
Iraq invaded == because it's dangerous to the surrounding countries (ahm, ... not Israel ...) and not because of the oil of course ...
Saudi Arabia not invaded == because they are peaceful and never said a ***** about Israel ...
+ ... some Saudi people being "connected" to 9/11 ... does not mean "the whole Saudi Arabia is connected to 9/11" ...
- sLm4ever, on 01/15/2008, -0/+2and do you actually believe their reasons for starting wars !? ...
- pimpofpixels, on 01/14/2008, -0/+7deja vu.
I wonder how long it'll be before a Neo-Con tyrants start talking about the “eminent threat” of Saudi Arabia. Gotta love the military industrial complex.
We pay to develop the weapons, then we pay again to take them away. - MidnightRIder77, on 01/14/2008, -1/+5Let's arm more Middle Eastern countries. I'm positive it will lower the violence.
/sarcasm - pimpofpixels, on 01/14/2008, -0/+16It's so painfully obvious to me that the only allegiance Bush has is to the military industrial complex.
He’s a THRID GENERATION war profiteer.
Anyone who voted for him is a dammed fool, and should never be allowed to vote again. - Jforsyth89, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3The only thing better than disregarding history and paying for another country's weapons is disregarding history and paying for another country's weapons when you are in debt.
- Mofo, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Why shouldn't he? Weaponry is on of the biggest money makers in the US, and if the US doesn't Saudi Arabia will simply go to the UK or the French or the Russians or the Chinese to get their weaponry. The UK just had a huge deal to supply Saudi Arabia with jet fighters. Much less with the dissolution of Iraq as a Sunni power, Saudi Arabia is now perhaps the largest most powerful Sunni nation to counter the Shiite Iran. This is global politics and business at its best.
- pimpofpixels, on 01/14/2008, -0/+4Yeah. It's Business. The purpose is to make money ambivalent to morality.
The problem is IT'S OUR MONEY, and the government is not supposed to be A BUSINESS.
This is corrupt government at it's worse. Just because you're seeing if for what it is doesn't mean it is what it's supposed to be. - h4ckler, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Bush is a hypocrit. We support terrorist states by selling/giving them weapons and training their armies then when they stop doing what we say we declare them terrorists and invade their country.
All Bush is doing is furthering the chaotic nature of the middle east. He's eqiupping Saudi Arabia, I wonder who we've pissed off now. Or is there even anyone not pissed off?
Why a country that isn't even 500 years old is bossing around people who've been doing what they're doing for thousands of years i'll never understand.
