- Mangeof, on 11/17/2009, -2/+20After a dozen buried "The French surrender alot." comments, you'd think people would stop making them.
- JulienLN, on 11/17/2009, -0/+13Surprised that the 'surrendering French' motto hasn't been so pervasive. I'm glad there's some coverage on all NATO forces participating in Afghanistan, including the good work done by the French Army.
- jaredd777, on 11/17/2009, -2/+11I just can't understand why conservatives hate France so much. They're in Afghanistan helping us.
The U.S. has such profound, historical ties to France- our founding fathers were heavily influenced by movements and philosophers in France and a French guy designed our nation's capital.
They're good people and they make some of the best music.
We shouldn't take their support for granted. - Kaegro, on 11/17/2009, -2/+11There is a lot of ***** comments coming from idiots who have nothing good to say about their own allies. Makes you wonder why the US has such a bad reputation.
- mfalk, on 11/17/2009, -3/+11In my time in France, everyone I met was quite polite, and a few even went out of their way to help me even Parisians. The only rude person was a Texan who was complaining that no one spoke English....
- Mangeof, on 11/17/2009, -1/+7They're building a road from Afghanistan to Pakistan to help promote economic development.
The Taliban aren't letting them. - TheActivedigger, on 11/16/2009, -1/+6“The police criminal director of Kandahar, Pashton Moamand, says the attack occurred overnight and that three policemen were killed and six wounded.”
- superkendall, on 11/17/2009, -2/+7Right, because building a road = killing people.
Relativism: Demonstrating no end to stupidity for 100 years and counting. - Junkyarddawg, on 11/17/2009, -2/+5@lolerskate: That's just as much ***** as the idiots above who don't know that the French army is actually highly trained and well equipped.
- XBebop, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3Must be one pissed-off valley. Maybe it's been eroded a bit too much over the past 2 million years.
- 14sierra, on 11/17/2009, -2/+5Americans hardly have our thumbs up our asses. Right now Obama is trying to decide if further troop commitment is possible/useful. The american economy is in shambles, our military is worn down from two wars and other committments worldwide, and we are fighting in a country that has beaten virtually every army to invade from the USSR to alexander the great. Right now Obama is trying to decide if it is worth further effort. Americans are still the majority of the forces fighting in Afghanistan right now.
- BossKey, on 11/17/2009, -2/+5The French are the ones defeating sea pirates right now.
The French also helped bail out the American colonists during the American Revolution. - jordanmc, on 11/17/2009, -1/+4@kaegro Hold up a minute. I understand the frustration with American's attitude, but you're exaggerating.
In World War I it was the introduction of U.S. forces that ultimately made the German defeat inevitable, despite the fact that they were entrenched deep in French territory. That awful war would have lasted even longer without America's intervention.
In World War II the United States liberated France and Italy among others from the Axis and their invasion took some of the pressure off of Russia on the eastern front allowing them to invade Germany.
On Korea you have a point, but in Vietnam it was France's failed attempt to re-colonialize Vietnam that eventually set up the Vietnam War, and left the U.S. to clean up the mess. The U.S. did actually create a separate democratic south Vietnamese state before it withdrew from Vietnam, however the North invaded again two years later. - DulcetTone, on 11/17/2009, -3/+6You have never met people from the French military. They are gung-ho and frustrated by the reins their government places upon them. They've done WELL more than their part to make the UN respectable.
I recall earlier in the decade when a toothless UN force in Africa was attacked and several killed while escorting a convoy. It was another disgrace for the laughable powder blue berets. Later in the week, another convoy was attacked, and the French attack helicopters on ready alert came in. It was an unholy slaughter of the ambushers.
I think the French are aware of their reputation, and perhaps even more dangerous because of it. When you see them living "up" to it, there are politicians responsible. - boogerthecat, on 11/17/2009, -1/+4viva la france!
obtenir quelques - NightC, on 11/17/2009, -3/+5Actually ever since the French government changed and has been more pro-American, most people in the United States don't have a problem with France anymore.
- 1x253, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2I know why we have such a bad reputation:
1. Preemptive war
2. Military aggression while telling said Allies,"we don't care what you think."
3. Tariff wars (particularly with France)
4. If you don't think the French are upset by the wave of vineyards in traditionally non-wine countries (Chile, Australia, etc) that was spawned by the California wine industry you're delusional.
5. Our role in destabilizing the world economy with the ruining of the US dollar through the most blatant economic incompetence and corruption that has appeared in headlines throughout the world.
6. History classes in our schools that don't teach a damn thing about actual history except this idealized and inaccurate telling of a mythological American History.
There's more, too! Shall I go on? - Kaegro, on 11/17/2009, -4/+6@uswarrior1
WW1 - The US did almost nothing
WW2 - The US jumped in late after the war started.
Korea. What did the french have to do with Korea?
Vietnam - Did the US succeed in Vietnam? no. - uswarrior1, on 11/17/2009, -4/+6and we saved them in:
ww1
ww2
korea

Yeah, and then we owned those Nazis! Without us, the French were done for! Didn't you watch Inglorious Basterds? - lorddazzer, on 11/17/2009, -2/+4In before 'le lightsaber terrible"
- Wosat, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2The comment you were replying to was about the French government becoming more pro-American. My comment was about the French electing someone more pro-American than their predecessor over a year BEFORE Obama was elected.
So the question is... What are you talking about? LOL - Junkyarddawg, on 11/17/2009, -2/+4@NightC: Actually the change was in the US government. The US hated France because France (like all of the EU) opposed Bush and his retarded policies. France (like all of the EU) love Obama and have largely forgiven the US for the all the chimp-***** Bush flung at them.
- allisonV12, on 11/17/2009, -2/+4The French are underestimated, they carved up the planet as fast as the British and were the last to let go of empire, kicking and screaming out the door.
A true legacy of handling rebellions and petty warlords to get what the French corporate empire desires.
Plus they have numerous garrisons breathing down the necks of tottering corrupt African fiefdoms...they are only a phone call away.
The French have the Resume ...so Americans should be grateful they're,re willing to take a bullet meant for an American soldier. - Azsen, on 11/17/2009, -2/+4lol classic
- 1x253, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Best post yet! Thank for saying it!
- Mangeof, on 11/17/2009, -4/+5I ***** hate those South Park memes...
- 1x253, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Well, as they say in France,"Their's Paris and then there's the rest of France." A French friend of mine who lives and works here in the states tells people he left France to get away from the French. I have many friends who are French, one family that spends summers with there with their French cousins. My sisters studied there for a year a piece in high school (NOT Paris). I've spent considerable time in Paris (stopping for several days on my way to other places) and I think Paris is a beautiful and cool town (particularly the Left Bank). I even had Parisians go out of their way to be cool to me.
I had a pretty good time in Paris, though I'm told by people who know a great deal more about France than you or I that the real France is to be found on the Mediterranean coast, in Burgundy and Lyon and also in the little towns in the interior.
But I must say, if you've never had a French person be rude to you, you haven't met many French people. I'm sure it's makes you all warm and fuzzy to idealize something that simply doesn't exist, but it's not based in any reality.
You don't know what you're talking about. Go spend some real time in France, not some little package vacation and you'll have a really good time, but you'll also experience what has come to be known as common knowledge, thus the reputation/stereotype/generalization. - lolerskate, on 11/17/2009, -8/+9In other news, other NATO countries keep fighting will the Americans still have their thumbs up their asses.
- j32407, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1You know I don't really think that the French surrendering jokes are really about hating the French or necessarily coming from conservatives . They are just jokes on a stereotype. Most of you should really learn to take life a little easier and develop a sense of humor. It's pretty pathetic really.
- NightC, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1A bullet meant for an American soldier? Last time I checked a lot of NATO nations had troops in Afghanistan... and I doubt the taliban likes any of them so...
- Kaegro, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1It's a good list.
- Wosat, on 11/17/2009, -1/+2The French moved right and elected Sarkozy, who's very pro-US, over a year before Obama was elected.
- pinchduck, on 11/17/2009, -2/+3Thank you to all the brave troops serving in Afghanistan. I know that you come from all over, and this American is very grateful for your service.
Question to our governments: WTF are we still there? If they want a road, let them risk their necks to build it. Get us all the hell out. - allisonV12, on 11/17/2009, -1/+1Why the delay in sending more American troops?
Because the higher the American dead for any given week ,the more political flak at home...the more calls to get out.
Disperse the casualties between nations so America doesn't have to come to grips about reinforcing or withdrawal.
Now if this was a real war instead of a political Machiavellian power play, those 40,000 American troops would be on the next C-130's to finish off what was started.
Instead things are getting entangled and weaved into one giant mess. - Wosat, on 11/17/2009, -3/+3I know it's the current fashion to over-use the word "hate", but let's get real. Conservatives do not hate the French, especially since Sarkozy was elected.
Making an occasional joke at their expense does not equal hate. - bigp3rm, on 11/17/2009, -2/+2Wtf is up with these comments?
- 1x253, on 11/17/2009, -1/+1Oh, I see, you mean American/European economic development, because our spreading of "democracy and economic development" has been so wildly successful everywhere around the world that it has been tried that we ought to leave them as destitute, wiped out and ***** as Central America, Southeast Asia and Africa.
See, now that you frame it that way it seems MUCH more ethical. These poor countries are dealing with the worst Loan Sharks in the world and this war we wage for "economic development" will have amounted to the raping of their natural resources as has happened since the "imperial era" of the 19th century all the way to the present.
Or are you going to try and convince me that THIS one time things will be different? THIS is the one time that it will actually work. THIS time it's different! - cutofmyjib, on 11/17/2009, -1/+0"A boy named Sue" by Johnny Cash comes to mind : )
- YagLana, on 11/17/2009, -3/+2"...other NATO countries keep fighting will the Americans still ..."
What? - Junkyarddawg, on 11/17/2009, -2/+1Which has absolutely zero bearing on US public opinion of France, or French public opinion of the US.
- wilf_brim, on 11/17/2009, -3/+1I read this and though:
"Dien Bien Phu, Part Deux"
For those who don't know what I'm talking about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Dien_Bien_P ... - 1x253, on 11/17/2009, -3/+1"They're in Afghanistan helping us."
Golly, sunshine and lollipops, huh? No, the French are there protecting their business interests and not only the pipe line. Don't be so naive. - 1x253, on 11/17/2009, -9/+5They'll snob you all to death! Or, no, they'll RUDE you to death!
- hereticoftruth, on 11/17/2009, -6/+2There is a final solution but it would be like handing machine guns over to a pack of chimpanzees.
- YagLana, on 11/17/2009, -16/+11We don't give up(unlike the French).
